  • This is the start of the public release for formerly exclusive series that started airing in early 2023. Minor edits have been made to fix only overt errors.
    Rules:
    1. Only my starter in battle
    2. No items in battle, except held items
    3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
    4. No evasion moves before level 100*
    Rule details:
    -- *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
    -- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
    -- I play the game at 4x game speed
    -- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
    -- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
    -- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
    -- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
    -- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
    -- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
    -- Saving between league members is allowed
    -- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
    -- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
    -- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
    -- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

    Looking at this first playthrough, it seems you underestimate the power of Leech Seed in gen 3. It actually deals 1/8 of the target hp, and heals you for 100% of that amount. Combined with sleep powder, this offers pretty good damage and recovery.

    • @Hoxeel
      @Hoxeel 6 месяцев назад +8

      Yeah, would've helped with early-game Harden/Growl users and Sand Attack spammers. It was rather frustrating seeing Scott ignoring that move in all those fights where I'm certain Leech Seed's passive damage would've been a huge help.

    You can clearly see Scott's improvement in playing gen 3 games. He was non used to natures, EVs, the missing of badge boost, power creep, abilities, but he got so much better during these months and playthroughs. Now I'm looking forward to watching him playing gen4

    I always feel like time-exclusive stuff is a sensible way to go with stuff like this. Rewarding people able to give money is always cool, but hard to imagine anyone would be too upset that the content they got for donating is released if it's like a year later or whatever. Might even be a nice reminder it exists and have been long enough to be rewatchable by that point.

    • @TheRealBlakers
      @TheRealBlakers 6 месяцев назад +2

      A year later? That seems kind of absurd. Most channels with exclusive content release it anywhere from a few days to a month later. You have the right idea, but delaying content for over a year just doesn't make sense. Scott has built an incredibly positive community, so I just don't understand encouraging him to make such a rash and toxic decision.

      @@TheRealBlakers Wha? It was just a rough handwavey number - the description says this was origionally made at the start ot 2023, it's now getting towards the end.

Still provides the extra incentive for the extra dedicated members/patreons but doesn't punish non members overall. Since you’re going for time I think you only really have two options for the EV’s: either modify them at the start as you see fit, like you do with IV’s and nature; or ignore them and get what you get. It’ll probably be very slow to seek out the EV’s you want, and by the time you can do that you’re forced to have a bunch in stats you might not want due to mandatory fights.

    A note on the gen 3 ai is that it’s pretty much impossible for the ais last pokemon to use any self destructing moves
    unless they have random ai which some hikers do and most rocket grunts do as well, but it’s useful for something like koga

    Hi Scott, I want to take a quick moment to talk about you gating off content behind memberships. I am not a paid member (it's just not something I typically do on RUclips) but I recognise that this is your job, your brand, and your business, and you have a family to support. I want to reaffirm that it is okay to gate some content off with the goal of encouraging people to compensate you. You've given us a lot for free when you had no obligation to do so (though I recognise that you do enjoy it). Obviously there is the fine balance even from a business perspective, but I just wanted to perhaps help quell any grumbling doubts or guilt you might have had in your head.

While you're definitely right that the general audience probably isn't here for the ui development and such as much, I really enjoy hearing about it as a fellow hobbyist programmer. As far as venusaur goes, I expect it to get fairly poor results, even though it'll always be number 1 in my heart as both my first ever starter and favorite pick for nuzlockes since it just hard carries the first 3 gyms and helps with catching because of sleep powder.

    With the early game cocoons, if they manage to get off multiple hardens, it may be better to switch to vine whip even though it's resisted, simply to hit special defense instead

  • @YOSHIERIDER
    @YOSHIERIDER 6 месяцев назад +1

    I'd say Mild (+SAt, -Def) is the best nature for a Bulbasaur solo run.
    It's Def is relatively low, and there aren't many scary physical attackers in the game (not until the elite 4, really). Boosting its SAt strengthens Vine Wip and Razor Leaf.
    It wants Atk to use normal moves and Earthquake for coverage. It wants Spd, because in a solo run you always want to keep whatever Spd you can. There are a lot more dangerous special attackers in the game, and the Bulbasaur line already has good SDf, so there's no reason to drop that stat.

    Considering how much resists grass in FRLG, if you ever run with natures, your better bet would probably be a phys venusaur (adamant nature, or - speed nature, and physical vitamins). Most rock pokemon are dual typed so u wouldnt really miss the loss of damage. This would make most of the troublesome fights you had heckin easier (way more 2 hits).
    So:
    Sleep powder
    Return
    Razor leaf/Giga Drain
    Synthesis
    or
    Sleep powder
    Return
    Solarbeam
    SunnyDay
    Honestly, though, Venusaur just got really boned in FRLG version, as sludgebomb, swords dance, and EQ all come online way too late; while Ghosts got levitate.

    I think using leech seed on Rival 2’s Pidgeotto is the correct call after sleep. I know it only has 90% accuracy but it’s reliable chip damage once it’s down, and allows you to abuse sleep better. The only downside is that surviving with multiple sand attacks on you could just waste time.

    Thanks for unlocking this! I know it's old but I think rash or mild might've been the optimal naturez. It's true that you don't want to lower attack so why not your defenses? Sp.D is the higher one and it's used for resists anyway, but you would have to watch out for fire and psychic so maybe defense.

  • @blakegroves6441

    I actually really like evolutions being part of the runs. Evolution level/method is just as important to a Pokémon as exp growth rates for a speed run, arguably more so for some Pokémon. Its fun to see non-evolving runs too of course.
    Rip high crit razor leaf, I'd have gone with -S.def, +S.Atk for Bulba as there are a lot of physical attackers in the game, but psychic/ice might be an issue then. I was anticipating use of sludge bomb (post game TM nooo, could have sworn it was earlier, poison types can't catch a break?) and Earthquake so attack matters, but then Earthquake actually isn't great against the elite four. Return too as always.
    Late game there is only 1 good special move in Razor Leaf/Giga drain which has such low PP, modern Giga is so much better. Hidden power would help Venusaur a lot.
    Not sure what would have been good for Agatha. Sunny Day Solar beam might have been nice, or growth giga drain. Neither seem like big run changers. Secret power has a 30% PRZ chance while inside, like a mini body slam, that might be okay. But doesn't help with ghosts.
    Leech seed is good for Agatha I think, but giving the roulette more turns could be a risk with curse and hypnosis around.
    Zard gets a very needed S.Atk buff and a decent wing attack after Gen 1 so that'll be nice to look forward too.

    Venusaur was my favorite pokemon as a kid. I think cuz of the 3 (or 4 cuz of pikachu) Gen 1 starters Venusaur got the least amount of love so naturally I gravitated to it. And to be honest, it's a beast. Especially in modern games with the move pool, abilities, mega and gigantimax. I know ppl hate when Gen 1 gets all the love but I always get excited when Venusaur gets to shine. Gives me that nostalgia high lol

    Bulbasaur was my starter back in the day and naturally who I used for the Fire Red remakes (wherein I recreated my original team but with superior hindsight as to what works... like not insisting Pidgey has Razor Wind), so I look forward to see how the classic starter's entire evolution line does in conquering the Kanto region.
    3:50 - To be fair, Luvdisc needed something, even if it is to gain EXP so quick that you spend less time using it.
    5:04 - Also to be fair, it's not like Bulbasaur gets an offensive Grass move particularly quick, what with Vine Whip not being until Level 10. You go through Viridian Forest without it but enter the Pewter Rock Gym with it.
    6:48 - I don't think Modest nature would work out that well due to the early game situation of relying on Tackle and Bulbasaur's overall movepool. Aside from Grass, all the other attacks it can learn/be taught such as Sludge Bomb, Strength, etc are of a Physical nature. Perhaps it'd pan out from such a super focus on Special Attack and late game speed-up but I do think it might slow down the start too much.
    9:15 - You chose Bulbasaur as well? Awesome! Also nice to see Ivysaur in action; such a cool middle stage design and my favourite look for the line.
    11:23 - It does seem like you should be throwing out a Leech Seed after the Sleep Power, to heal up during those unfortunate times you miss from Sand Attack blindness. An never mind, you go for that tactic at 11:32. I spoke too soon.
    14:07 - Cool to see Secret Power being utilised on Ivysaur. It's a move-set addition that I don't think you'd see outside of a solo challenge. Shame Kadabra Disabled it in this instance but I see that proved little problem for you.
    15:37 - Is that new art of the Rapping Lass Alicia? It seems to be a lot of brighter and clearer than I recall. Rather fun to see the proper names of these distinctive route trainers thanks to playing the remake here.
    17:22 - Love the idea of Pidgeotto being Bulba the Venasaur's archenemy. It is at times Blue's (or Butt's in this case) signature Pokémon.
    20:26 - Oh wow; I knew about the Braking part but the consistent item lined up with each lamppost is all new to me. Amazing what one can still learn about a 19 year old game.
    26:17 - Hmm, I wonder if Giga Drain and/or Rest might be best for Venasaur here. I always like the Sleep Powder/Leech Seed combo that I'd have kept that, but given you have to sweep entire teams, I can see why you opted for Growth and Return as part of your move-set.
    29:11 - Oh my gosh; nice to see Venasaur tanking things like the bulky looking frog should be able too from appearance. Even better considering it's against Sabrina's formidable ace, the definitely Psychic type Venomoth.
    31:29 - Bulba gracefully hopping over the Fire Blast is a wonderful image to imagine.
    32:19 - Once again, I apparently spoke too soon as here you are opting for Razor Leaf. An Earthquake is an interesting choice for a Venasaur. Lucky you didn't go with that Modest nature then.
    34:50 - How nice of Bruno to give your Bulba a free Super Potion in the form of his Onix.
    35:51 - I was thinking Sludge Bomb would be the better option here, take advantage of the lower physical defence of Gengar and the like, but then I remembered that Ghost resists Poison so the 4x resistance negates any advantage there.
    37:52 - What a close showdown with Agatha here! Epic fight here and most of it involved your opponent taking naps... by force.

    When using vitamins, you can use ten of each on a pokemon with zero stat experience except for one stat. The vitamins won't raise the evs above a set value (ten each per stat), and there is also a total number of vitamins you can give.

    Firered seems like a step up in some way in trems of difficulty in some areas compared to the original gen 1 games. 😊
    The iv/ev system is basically making vitamins not matter all that much. And also you'll need to think before grinding for levels in order to get the Evs that you'll need for major battles.
    Most of the bugs are fixed ,and badge boost are working as they should, and the ai likes to set up a lot,or soeed control if it can. So I guess that it's going to be a different experience then gen 1,for most Pokémon. The venosaur line is a good way to start . Once you'll get to know the game , you'll be able to do better.😊 So try to have fun while doing so.
    I can't wait for Charizard's turn , because I used it on my first firered run.😊

    • @TheGhostFart
      @TheGhostFart 6 месяцев назад +1

      You're only gaining a single EV per stat/mon in most cases so you need to do a large amount of grinding to see a meaningful difference.

    • @bateltheassistant
      @bateltheassistant 6 месяцев назад

      @@TheGhostFart For sure. But you'll need to make sure that you grind for the right ones that you'll need, for some fights it does make the difference. Usually weaker Pokémon need to be fully ev trained in order to solo run the game .😄

    Regarding the EV system there are some places for just 1 single stat, such as spA in pkmn tower,sabrina gym trainers, speed in blaine gym and attack in the fighting dojo. Hope this helps and for early prebrock grinding, the route where the optional rival is has the only attack ev in mankey and the rest are speed evs from there

    • @shadowtitanx3962

      Attack has Machop and Mankey lines at Cycling Road as well.
      The Birdkeepers near Fuchsia also gives Attack and Speed EVs with their Spearows, Fearows, and Dodrio.
      Also, at Celadon Gym, you can either get Attack EVs if you go left or Special Attack EVs if you go right.

    Glad to see your FR run being released to the public, for subsequent battles will you be doing league 2 as well as that i feel is the true final end of FRLG, also with some rare candies and useful hidden items location being swapped compared to the original gen1 games, it may be nice trying to know their location.
    It may also be a debate to give yourself straight 60 pokemon for your dex right at the start so u have exclusive rights to some of the aides items, and instant access to sevii island part 2 once u cleared the league P1

    Thank you for this content brother. Also, my favourite ever evolution line. Bulbasaur won me over from the moment I saw him! 🙏🏻
    Can’t remember the nature name but I tend to use +special attack and -speed as he is already slow, boosting his later game special moves like solarbeam, leech seed/giga drain. It doesn’t lower his attack for moves like razor leaf and earthquake either. Just my opinion though.
    Personally I like sunny day, solarbeam, sleep powder/giga drain/synthesis and earthquake as a final move build.
    Only criticism I can really give is that you didn’t utilise leech seed enough in the early game. It’s really helpful.
    Your final move set was …. Well weak to say the least.

    • @wmzer0mw
      @wmzer0mw 6 месяцев назад

      Special attack doesnt affect leech seed. Also, razorleaf is considered a special move in Gen 3.
      I dont think leech will speed him along much as its too slow for a race. Maybe for early bosses.

    • @GBNationalist
      @GBNationalist 6 месяцев назад

      @@wmzer0mw Would’ve secured early wins instead of the losses/resets he received by trying to go to fast. He didn’t utilise the healing moves of grass types very well.
      I really thought everyone had been taught the tortoise and the hare. You don’t need to always rush to get the quickest time, he didnt really utilise what grass type are good for; their consistency and ability to self sustain, not sprint through the game.
      Honestly, almost any time he plays a grass type Pokémon, I have found myself overwhelmingly disappointed with this take and performance. He doesn’t see their advantages he just tries the same as every other type and bash his way through. This seems to be a curse of poketubers, they don’t use grass types well.
      Also it’s true that it wouldn’t ‘boost leech seed’ but it would for giga drain. Which was an alternative for that slot for self sustain. Razor leaf would be good regardless then which is interesting to note, gen 3 out of the older gens is my least played so I don’t remember basically anything about them aha.

      @@GBNationalist
      Slow and steady is not too helpful for a race especially with Venusaur here. Venusaurs consistency would improve if he netted himself 2 hit kills instead of drawn out fights of 3-5 hit kills. So the issue is mainly damage.
      I get where you are commin from, but turning most battles into 8 turn slug fests (8 turns for leech seed to kill something) + sleep turn slows saur to a crawl and opens him up to crit kills.
      Gigadrain is ok but only at 60 base power during Gen 3, its good for SE damage but i wouldnt rely on it elsewhere. That being said its still better than razor leaf at 55 BP
      For saur to win he needs to punch harder, and saur is actually pretty close to netting 2 hits.
      Scott had the right idea to play with Saurs movepool. Im still of the opinion that to do this run saur needs to be phys, not special as too many things resist grass moves.
      Honestly, Gen 3 just did venusaur dirty. It literally has all the moves it needs to shred gen 3 but almost all of them unlock post game.
