Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, or save states
4. No movepool evasion-boosting moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- I make no attempt to have the exact same rule details between generations.
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- Evasion boosting is allowed if the move is not obtained from the Pokemon’s movepool. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed.
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1 & 4, banned in gen2, and allowed only to bypass terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- Items obtained with the ability Pickup can only be used if the starter obtained them
-- The footage is sped up & slowed down to match the pace of my narration
These Rule details apply only to generation 1:
-- All battle-mechanic glitches are allowed (glitches that occur outside of battle are banned)
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
If you didn’t read these rules and left a comment. Thanks for helping with the algorithm.

If you're new around here, Venomoth is a Psychic/Flying type, you can't change my mind. - Игры
I went into Surge thinking I could just have my Charmeleon dig him and win but was caught dumbfounded when he used Surf
It's such a well designed gym.
The Stadium flashbacks
The Oak Nidoking change is probably a lore change due to the intro scene of the Nidorino vs Gengar being Oak and Agatha.
That makes sense!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemonCongratulations YOU GOT CRAIGED (I memed it personally)
Don't worry this happens to everyone
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemonplease do more yellow legacy
Imagine all the fun you can have here
I always assumed it was based on the League battle at the start of the anime
@@Br0oham Which itself is based on the intro to Red.
"luckily I have Cut" is not a phrase you would normally hear.
13:10 Constrict is buffed to 40 base power, so it is a direct upgrade to tackle with a decent chance to reduce speed. This can combo with Bind and Bide, which can make Onix pretty scary for some Pokémon
18:22 Surge is meant to be tough when you’re playing Hardcore, the level cap is 24, so you have to face it with an underleveled team. He’s actually pretty tough in Hardcore!
Then what’s with the level 29?
@@skeetermania3202I am guessing that's the point, that it's one overleveled mon
@@skeetermania3202because he has one Pokémon. When you only level 1 poke, it's much higher than if you level a team.
Came here to say exactly this!
Good job using Quick Attack against Surge!
Actually with Both Pokémon being paralysed it didn’t matter ^^
You were faster from the start
@@MK-yg2np maybe, but Scott asked to be praised
45:06 Onix has a major stat boost in Yellow Legacy. 75HP, 80Atk, 160Def, 85Speed, 65Special He’s still not great, but he’s not nearly as bad anymore.
Holy hell that's a lot of stats, particularly because he gets to keep his massive defense
Exactly! Poor Onix lol, massive improvements and still gets called trash.
@@Vorael I can see why Scott would still think so considering he was still nailing it with stuff like Surf
Those Onyx stats are perfect
The Elite 4 rematch teams are based on their Pokemon Stadium teams.
I noticed the mandatory Bug Catcher at the end of Viridian Forest has Samurai’s team from the anime.
I think so
I fought for that to get in there. Very first yellow stream I was like "all I want is for pinsir to be good in some way"
My favorite part was the surprise Blaine fight at the very end
Spoiler!!
I love that Pikachu’s cheek pouches light up when he’s battling.
I wonder if anyone mentioned that during the "multiple choice" part of the gym quest, the teams scale depending on who you defeat first, meaning they will have different teams and levels if you do them in a different order. it's pretty awesome and understated.
34:26 The thing is, the Pokémon Shock incident (and ultimately still 20 episodes to get to Blaine) ran out the clock on whatever deadline vanilla Yellow had. Koffing and Ekans evolved in episode 30. Koga was defeated in episode 32. Electric Soldier Porygon was 6 episodes later, so Koga seems to be the last element of anime accuracy.
Oh that's a really great point! Thank you so much for sharing.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I checked the dates just now to see (because I knew ESP was December 1997 and it was April 1998 that the show came back), and yeah, Burn! Guren Gym! (Riddle Me This!) was August 13, 1998, while Yellow’s Japan release was just a month later. There was noooo way they’d still be programming
52:42 I don’t know why this makes me so mad, but Joy’s Exeggutor has Dream Eater, but Exeggutor can’t learn Dream Eater in Yellow Legacy - WHICH IS SO STUPID. It definitely should get Dream Eater, it’s a Psychic type with a sleep move! I know Dream Eater isn’t great, but it would be nice to have as a combo with Sleep Powder.
It can't even learn it through TM? Or do you mean just through level up?
@@parkermacinnis3977 it can’t learn it by TM or level, it is not a move that Exeggutor or Exeggcute can learn in Legacy-or Vanilla for that matter
35:11 also, fun fact:
Solar Beam was buffed in this game from 120 base power to a whopping 180 base power
Perfect timing as smith is beginning emeral legacy next.
I watched it like 10 minutes ago and just saw this from Scott. What a coincidence
Strength would be a great rock move
Oh yeah! That’d be a nice alteration! We do need something better than Rock Slide
Either that or a fighting move
Smith said he wanted to "keep the feeling of Yellow" and I think he and his team did a great job of that. The one thing I disagree with 100% is removing Blue's Sandslash. That fiend is such an important part of Yellow's identity. It doesn't feel like Yellow without it. The rival's team overall feels a lot more Red/Blue (except with an Eevee) than it does Yellow, I feel.
Yeah, removing Sandslash does make the rival feel much different. The pair of Magneton and Sandslash feels like the rival’s identity. Those two together ruin so many Pokémon.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Glad I'm not alone in thinking this. Also congratulations on reaching a nice 69k subscribers Scott! You never forget that milestone.
This Hack actually gives the Rival 3 entirely different teams based on which Eeveelution they have! He still has his more usual Yellow team, I believe as the Flareon team, while he gets something closer to his Red/Blue Team with Jolteon, and a Manga inspired team for Vaporeon I'm pretty sure. The goal was also to make Yellow Legacy the "Definitive Edition" of Gen 1, so fitting in Blue's more iconic team to most players is awesome, but they at least didn't fully remove his Yellow team.
Glimbus watches Scott? Clash of worlds.
They didn't remove Blue's sandslash. You picked jolteon, which is his best team. If you wanted the yellow team, you should have gone for flareon
That tactical use of quick attack versus Surge was 200 IQ, Scott; great job!
Jinx is a misunderstanding of the cultural reference and isn't the cism of ray
Blackface: 😒
Blackface, Japan: 😱
53:14 A Gengar on Sabrinas team. That is an anime referance. Ash "defeated" Sabrina with the help of a Haunter
...yeah... that one was so stupid... at least Ash's "win" against Misty made a little bit of sense.
Pretty sure Ash also let her keep the Haunter.
@@airhead3409 He did. Forgot to mention that in original post
I think Yellow (and Crystal) Legacy are awesome games, and I'm glad that you enjoyed it but also appreciate that you were candid with sharing the things you disliked.
He actually stated that the gen 1 miss was removed for easy but left in hard
i"m guessing the champion rematch doesn't have his eeveelution because otherwise they'd need to build 3 different teams and find a way to remember which one it had.
EXCELENT!!! I was expecting the first Yellow Legacy Solo Run video!!! ♡♡♡
Strength should've been a Fighting move, since it's literally built around physical prowess and moving stuff around.
Strength should be Rock!
@@TheMoogleKing93 I could see a good argument for that, since you use it to move rocks around.
I just figured fighting power would go into that instead, but yeah, Rock has potential to fit too.
11:12 Man, Eevee sprite is so much better with that color swap.
The E4 rematches have their Pokémon Stadium teams. That’s why they’re so diverse.
In regards to "Secondary Game Corner"...
Apparently, in Japan, the laws are such that gambling and such are illegal, but there's a loophole that doesn't qualify it as gambling if you cash in your prizes at another building entirely. Apparently they wanted more realism in this generation.
I already watched the full thing before, but that isn't stopping me from watching the edited version!
Also droooped my balllssss
Awesome video, would love to see you do a video series on this. Those hitmonchan changes and the scyther run sound like they’d be some peak content!
SCOTT!!! CATERPIE CAN LEARN CUT!!! PLEASEEEEEEEE RUN IT!!!
Omg.
I second this
I think Sabrina having Gengar is a anime reference
Why does every RUclips video on these Legacy hacks specifically use the word PERFECT (all caps) in the title? Is it something Smithplays requires of creators? Or is it just something that has somehow become an unspoken standard?
Rapidash has Hi Jump Kick!!? Man, thats one of the best ideas i have seen
Erika Koga and Sabrina actually have 3 different teams and levels depending on the order you fight them, so you could fight them in a beneficial way fir pokemon weak to those typing
The recolors bar Jynx are an upgrade, you're just too used to the originals
Purple Jynx is cursed af
@@Duothimir Hell yeah it is!
I think if they made her red I'd have been less upset. Purple just seems so off...
I praise you Scott for remembering quick-attack and giving us another video:)
;)
I would love to see more of either this romhack or other romhacks that you feel drawn to
I liked most of the colored sprites. Scott wildin yo
Always love seeing you play romhacks. I'd love to see a nuzzlocke of this game!
this was such a good update. thank you for fixing everything. you are amazing and i love your videos!!
I love this romhack! I had so much fun playing it that I even completed the Pokedex which is something I almost never do in Pokemon games.
It's funny that you had so much trouble with Paralysis in your run. In my run, it was confusion. The fact they boosted Supersonic's accuracy made the early game a confusion nightmare for me haha.
One thing I noticed you didn't mention is the fact that you can now buy Repels in Pewter City. No longer will you need to turn off encouters in Mt Moon!
Sugimori's Pikachu is the best Pikachu. In fact, all of his designs are!
I basically never see your streams just because the timing doesn't work with my schedule. I caught this one, and it was a blast.
I love the added team diversity, even with the regular trainers. It's so cool to see pokemon that you normally never see like Golem
Praise Scott for quick attack
I’m still playing through the game and been loving the improvements , especially since this was my first pokemon as a kid
One BIG change you should've mentioned is that Kogas Venomoth is now a Poison/Bug type instead of Psychic/Flying. Its subtly hinted at via the sprite color change now being the poison shade of purple whereas in normal yellow its psychic purple. Anyhow, this was a great video and I really enjoyed the live stream too. I think a Bug redemption runs on this version would be entertaining. Thanks for the work you do!
Oh this is cool! I'm into Pokemon but never had enough patience for the newer generation games, but I'd enjoy trying this version!
Thank you Scott. Great video and good to see your improvement in Coding (and Using Quick Attack)
Good job for using quick attack.
Also the misty animation with starmie spinning away is pretty great.
i used pikachu during my whole play-through without over levelling, and it was amazing! The improvements in its stats definitely showed.
Since you outsped Raichu at the beginning of the fight, Pikachu was still faster when both got paralyzed (18v16). There was no point in using quick attack!
Heh
Great idea since that Pikachu can learn EVERYTHING! Smith and his team did a great job with this rom hack!
The Lance BLT is the hard-hitting scientific analysis that I come to this channel for!
A few days ago I started Crystal Legacy and just yesterday I wondered if you'd ever consider playing one of his romhacks. What a coincidence :D
53:20 the Gengar is actually a refrence to the anime, as ash gave her the haunter there
Good job on the quick attack against Surge!
If I remember right, Sabrina's Gengar is an anime reference. Ash left his Haunter with her at the end of the episode.
Thanks for the content for my flight today.
THE PIKACHU ON THE LEFT GETS ELECTRIC ON IT CHEEKS WHEN YOU GO IN BATTLE!? That's so cool ♥️
Scott...can't wait for solo challenges #1-151 on Yellow Legacy!
This is one of the funniest solo challenges I've seen from Scott. Also refreshing because it's clear that Scott is somewhat out of his depth with the changes.
Kinda want to play it myself now, maybe a fighting or rock type run.
I imagine this has been mentioned, but sabrina having a gengar is an anime reference. In the show, she makes friends with a haunter.
MORE RUNS WOULD BE AWESOME! But ill take a nuzlocke too
Sabrina having Gengar in the rematches is due to the Anime when Ash left the Haunter with Sabrina after she gave the badge simply because she was made to laugh. Lol
Congrats on the nice milestone of 69K Subscribers
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. YAY
ima add comments to this as I watch it.
Ok so, first off, constrict is 40 power, so it's stronger than tackle, while still keeping the idea of binding without it constantly abusing bind. Also the huge boost to onixs bst makes it worthy of a huge miniboss and good enough for the hiker from the e4s team.
Lt Surges raichu is busted. Its a huge improvement and it's level 29. I think you missed that because pika had to overlevel for Brock.
53:19 I would assume the gengar on her team is a nod to the anime. Since the haunter ash used to make her laugh ended up staying with Sabrina
I was really hoping for the Mew fight...
YES! Please do more solo runs with this version hack
When i played yellow legacy i was suprised how easy it was but upon looking others play it i realized that the way i chose pokemon was responsible for me having it easy ...i train pokemon to a certain level and than use the least leveled one as the first ...like train pokemon up to level 10 and sort the team from low to high level than do the same for 20 30 etc...somehow the way the game was changed and the pokemon by the trainers used always ended up with me having the perfect pokemon with the perfect moveset at the perfect time fighting the right opponent...since i did not read comments or watch any videos about the romhack before playing i was mindblown learning that it was coincidence...🤣
Also i dont really care for stats i only use pokemon i like and think are cool so there are tons of pokemon with awesome stats and movesets i will never use because i think they are lame... i guess this also contributed to that
the smith team probably wanted to suprise or catch me off guard but because the way i chose pokemon is not based on "logic" but preference made it backfire...😂
Congratulations on 69k subs! Next 690k 😊😁
Idk if you mention it later in the video or were aware but the Rivals entire team changes depending on how many of the fights you win with him smith deamed them "easy medium and hard mode" depending on if you lose at the lab or win 1 or 2 of the fights. But not just the starter changes. The whole team does. Which is similar to an idea I had.
After taking your first two resets to tangela, I think we need a legacy playthrough with the blue spaghetti pokemon.
Hopefully it would be better than it is in Yellow. I don't want to use Constrict against Brock again.
Wigglytuff for Lorelei makes alot of sense. She really likes plushies after all.
Sweet. I appreciate the way that you did this video. I want to play this rom hack without any major spoilers and you definitely deliver.
I will say that I appreciate Smith Plays rom hacks for the thoughtfulness, time and longevity that they put into them. However, something about how they keep saying these early generations are completely busted and should have just "done such and such" to make a better game just doesn't sit right with me.
They're iconic for a reason and theyd probably just get the same hate for other reasons if they were more "polished".
I would love to see you Create a rom hack of your favorite Pokémon game and make it specifically for solo runs
Omg... blaine fight... just seeing hi jump kick on rapidash made me surprised, then happy, then question why that was never a thing. It would be cool if she was fighting/fire. I can't believe how happy surprised I am at something that didn't even matter in your run haha.
after 28 min i finally feel home in this rom hack
I think maybe another reason that Oak has Nidoking is probably to do with any% runs of Yellow, with the whole horn drill thing.
Very funny run, ik you have a million other projects but I would personally love if you did at least a couple more runs of this (maybe run it with Gengar to avoid the 800 body slam paras)
18:41 I give you praise Scott
43:25 my guess was metronome being the danger move, causing a freeze or KO
Lol surge getting crushed the second time was hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
Would love to see more Runs in Yellow Legacy. I think the next solo ones for this rom hack Scyther (or Pinsir) just because of Cut. After that Hitmonchan, Venomoth
and then Eevee these mons have had their stats change.
Gratz on 69 thousand, nice.
Hey I asked this a while ago, but are you planning on releasing your overlay for Yellow Legacy? Maybe you covered this in the video, I’m not done yet. I’ve done a lot of optimization in the Legacy Discord for Solo Pikachu Hardcore Glitchless, and it would help keep track of some things to get past Brock. There’s a level cap of 12, so you can’t use double team, so you have to use a specific number of Growls and Tail Whips to be optimal, and using the overlay to keep track would be nice.
Unfortunately I don’t intend to release it for Yellow Legacy, at least anytime in the near future. Maybe if I play the game more and actually make the code robust. It’s held together with tape right now.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I respect that. I’m sure it’s not easy to make an overlay like yours. I’m not actually doing the run, just helping optimize the Brock split-which is a major pain. The rest of the run is manageable with Double-Team and various coverage moves, but Brock requires like 700 encounters just to get enough stat exp to hope to knock out the Geodude reliably.
Yoo they actually took the hiker out of the second e4 room! Cool to finally see Bruno in this game!
"Uninteresting and unchanged" Scott says as he obtained the TM14 "Blizard" 😂😂😂😂😂 28:27 💀💀💀
In the anime Sabrina ends up with Ash's Haunter so it does make sense that she'd have a Gengar in the rematch battle.
I think the modern games have plenty of post-game content, but the problem is that content has been designed to be downloaded for an additional charge at a later date.
Man I would almost agree that Yellow is my favorite, but Crystal exists. Still, Yellow has the best sprites by far. I still prefer them over the other Gen 1 and 2 versions.
Agreed! Yellow had the most beautiful Pokemon Sprites hands down!
you a real one my brotha
I've been waiting for Gen 1 video so I could ask a question about the Badge Boost glitch.
So having certain badges increases certain stats in battle by 12.5%. Being the effected of a stat-stage modifying move then causes this in battle stat boost to apply again. My question is about how the game does extra boosts calculations.
Would it go:
Actual 100 -> In battle 112.5 -> 1 boost glitch 126.5625 -> 2 boost glitch 142.3828 etc.
or
Actual 100 -> In battle 112.5 -> 1 boost glitch 125 -> 2 boost glitch 137.5 etc.
The game floors the stat value and stores that number as the stat when it is recalculated. So it goes:
First boost: 100 -> 112
Second boost: 112 -> 126
Third boost: 126 -> 141
After multiplying, always remove the decimal, never round up (floor).
If the Pokémon levels up then the game recalculates the stat based on stat experience, level, base stats, and DVs. Once that occurs a new badge boost is applied (for applicable badges). This is why compounding boosts are removed.
Need this to be a good side project with the new rom
SAME.
Like seriously, even if it's only like, once every 2 months, I'd kill for a creator to just be a legacy single runner.
Is that a tool that you are using that shows the power, accuracy, and PP of a move and changes dynamically based off of in game pokemon? Or are you manually changing that for every single encounter? If it is a tool, where can I download it and how does it work?
There is a Cameo in Koga's gym if you ever have to do additional training in there, but level and mon-wise it is probably the toughest fight in the building after Koga.
Edit: Nevermind. You mention her among the rematches even though you cannot battle her at that point.
I love the battle electric bolts!!❤❤❤
