Should have given the rival Venasaur no?
That’s a scam
I've just realized that the back and front sprites of the Pokémon you use in your Can you beat Pokémon Red/Blue videos are almost identical to the sprites when Pokémon Red/Blue is played on a Super Game Boy.
@@MonkeyDLuffy-ed4fj Not affiliated with Jrose or Zenmarket, but I manage one of the larger retro games businesses in Australia and we regularly use Japanese auction proxies to get things like used controllers and memory cards in bulk. All of the major ones (Buyee, Zenmarket, From Japan, White Rabbit Express etc.) are completely genuine and used by thousands of customers worldwide.
We use Zenmarket over the others, since:
- White Rabbit charge very high fees (but the service is excellent)
- Buyee charge slightly higher postage fees, but without the better service
- From Japan have the best looking site, best currency exchange rates, and support staff who are genuinely professional enough to get jobs as UN translators, but behind the scenes their company has some incredibly dumb policies which must be rigidly adhered to because of Japanese culture. We've currently been back and forth with them for 6 weeks (!!) because they weren't able to simply slap a FedEx label on a box of PS4 controllers.
Zenmarket are pretty no-frills (site could look better, during peak times it sometimes takes ~1 week to package up the item), but support actually solves problems sensibly and the costs are low.
So while I personally couldn't recommend randomly signing up to all of Jrose's sponsors (VPNs don't actually protect your already-encrypted banking information, Raid: Shadow Legends has predatory mechanics), Zenmarket are a great company and you can save heaps of money on certain products by importing directly from Japan.

I like to imagine that for their Special moves, Cubone/Marowak uses their bone as a magic staff. That doesn't explain their inability to use Thunderbolt and Thunder, and if anything makes it weirder, but hey.
There is a bit of a trend where pokémon that can use elemental moves (usually Draconic mons or Normal-type-ish beasties, and Cubone seems like a bit of a mix of the two) tend to not be able to use those moves that have a type, which their own type would hinder them in using with sort of real-life logic: Fire dragons can't learn Water-type moves or Ice moves, Ice dragons don't learn Fire-type moves, Ground dragons don't learn electric moves (except Rhyhorn and Rhydon who have a special thing with their horns being a lightning rod), Bibarel can't learn fire moves other than Sunny Day. One of the big exceptions to this is Nidoking and Nidoqueen, who only gain their secondary Ground typing upon evolving and are already able to learn Electric moves as their previous stages.
As I say, it's only a trend, not really a rule.
This is canon now.
In Pokémon stadium, I believe their elemental attacks like ice beam come from the club itself
I came up with the explanation that Cubone cries so hard its tears become Bubble Beam
Which is strange cause it can learn Thunder and Fire Punch, but not Ice Punch.
Cubone so sad it can use its tears for water moves, and its lack of its mothers warmth let it use ice moves.
It needs a vaporeon. They are the most compatible.
Aren't we all most compatible with vaporean 😉 lol
@@patricksmith2295personally, never vape, always glaceon, sometimes leafeon, sometimes sylveon
Cubone is actually a Charmander whose Charizard mom died and it's flame went out. It's a ground type now because it'll never grow wings.

24:05 I thought you were about to say the ledge boss. Truly the ultimate rival. Not even Fival can best it on a good day.

@@justinbowman2126 i think its the new editors work. He does a good job
Be sure to thank Sean for that one!
Lorelei was also brutal when I did this one in Yellow. Interestingly, I also find myself underestimating her difficulty when using Pokemon weak to her, specifically Ground and Flying-types, so you're not alone!
At 26:45 you talk about it not being fun for you to do multiple runs and that statement really made me think about the strength of these early generation Pokemon games. There are so many ways for players to create their own rules and ways of playing. These games find a way to stay fresh and interesting. It's great to see you playing the game with a different approach. The more approaches there are out there, the better we all get to learn these games, and the more we can all continue to enjoy them. I also applaud you for continuing to play the games in the way that brings you the most joy!
Scott shoutout in a Jrose video. One step closer to the long awaited collab.
You did it, you were mentioned by Jrose. :)
Scott is such a nice and passionated guy. I would love to see you guys working together
Reminds me of the social science idea that there are two kinds of genius, inspiration vs progressive refinement. One isn’t better than the other, they contribute different things. We wouldn’t have this format without Jrose, we wouldn’t have the overlay/router/community without Scott
Hey, didn't expect you here
While I can't explain Blizzard really, Fire Blast makes perfect sense for Cubone specifically.
The japanese name "Daimonji" is a reference to a specific japanese festival about when the spirits of deceased family members go back to the spirit world.
Now if you know Cubone's story, you know why this fits, and also why probably the alolan form is fire of all things.
Also why iirc aside from Alolan Marowak Cubone can't learn any other fire moves since that's a very specific connection.
Maybe Blizzard and Ice Beam has something to do with the Ice Age, which happened right after the Dinosaurs died (Cubone and Marowak are based on dinosaurs). Or maybe it’s because they are “cold blooded”.
Maybe it's because he's a cool baby monster so he can spit beams like Godzilla (thus learning Water Gun, Ice Beam, its variants, and Fire Blast, the only Fire-type TM on Gen I)
I don't understand why a japanese spirit festival is related to fire blast?
@@RustyShakleford01In the festival they make a bonfire in the hills with an specific form (this letter -> 大), and Fire Blast makes reference to that symbol. Look up daimonji in Google to see the fire, you'll see that it has the same form as the Fire Blast animation
@@RustyShakleford01 Fire Blast's animation is a fiery 大, and in the Gozan no Okuribi festival, they light giant bonfires in the shape of that character. The festival is also known as Daimonji, which is Fire Blast's japanese name
Had a lot of problems with this one.
Constantly choosing to Body Slam instead of STAB Dig often slowed the game down.
Examples: Starmie vs Dig would have resulted in a much faster KO than trying the Body Slam paralysis.
Dig vs Exeggcute on Rival Fival would have led to Dig - Miss - Dig - Leech Seed - Dig - Miss - Dig - KO, dodging paralysis.
Poison being weak to Ground meant a lot of neutral damage for Grass/Poison Mons. (Good argument for Blastoise over Venusaur)
Body Slam is 80 BP per turn. Dig is 150 BP with STAB included, but spread across two turns, so it's only 75 BP per turn. Assuming no resistances/weaknesses, Body Slam has the better DPT, and can cause paralysis.
Boy forgot dig was a two turn move 💀💀
Fun fact: Red/Green source code data reveals that Marowak actually had its own ultimately scrapped evolution!
Aw damn. Shame it didn't make it. I wonder what it would have looked like
It's Kangaskhan isn't it?
Femursaurus?
i assume kanghaskan learns the same odd elemental TMs as cubone. confirms the myth maybe?
@@Hoodlum_Media it's also coming from the fact that Marowak has the same shape and tail as a Kangaskhan
at 14:19 when you were fighting rival fival you got fully paralyzed while underground from using dig, triggering a glitch where enemy attacks will always miss as the game thinks you are still underground. if you hadn't used dig again (cancelling the glitch) you could have potentially won, although with bad enough luck, leech seed might have been enough to do you in. Of course, taking that win would be pretty cheaty so i get why you would want to avoid it.
I was going to mention this. I don't think the single player offers a lot of opportunity to abuse this bug, but it's a pretty notable one as it's pretty devastating competitively (you basically automatically win the entire battle, leading to Fly and Dig often being banned).
he doesnt use glitches outside of badge boost, so it wouldn't be valid
I like how just two minutes after JRose was talking about whether Blastoise or Venusaur/Gyarados would be harder, Exeggcute proves to be the rival 5 roadblock.
It is pretty funny, sadly when it becomes Exeggutor it's basically worthless, so I personally would have considered Gyarados/Venusaur the harder pick for the Champion fight.
Welp, redo the run!
@@nolongeraperson One of the reasons I thought Venusaur would be harder than Blastoise was that Razor Leaf would effectively be a OHKO on Cubone, as it will almost always crit and could ignore any potential badge boosts.
@@sonicdoommariothere's that for the mid-game and also having Gyarados on the team means there's a powerful water type that he can't EQ or Dig into submission. Venusaur might be the weaker starter here, but the Gyarados would've been a great wall imo.
I love the overlay! The gym badge times and elite 4 death counters are great!

I don't remember this meme. Can someone refresh my memory?
Interesting, I didn’t even go to the meme. It reminded me of Pokemon Rusty Version battling Blain’s “dog type” and its weakness to cu-bones
16:35 Lorlelei’s Lapras also learned Blizzard by TM (it shockingly can’t learn Blizzard via level up in any generation but gets Sheer Cold, go figure), and Agatha’s last Gengar learned Toxic.

@@theMOCmaster with all the running gags, like the count Count Impression and misstyping venomoth!
We have pretty much confirmed now that the main factor for time is Brock and the main factor for levels is Lance. If you struggle against Brock, you'll have a bad time at the end of the run. If you struggle against Lance, you'll need to be at a high level. Almost all Pokemon that need to be at a high level are weak to water, thus struggling to get past Lance's Gyarados, one of the only Pokemon in the entire game that has a high powered stab move. On the other hand, every Pokemon that has a high time doesn't get a move to hit Brock. Getting stuck at Lance loses less time overall than getting stuck at Brock. Leveling up once reaching the elite 4 is much faster than having to knock out Pokemon in Viridian Forest for experience.
These seem like good observations!
Jrose. You overlooked something about 5 minutes in.Cubone can absolutely deal with flying types without using struggle before that one Rocket trainer with the Zubat. To the left of the Mt Moon entrance is TM 12, which teaches Water Gun. It's not amazing, but it's better than struggle.
We get Mega Punch by that point, which I do mention
I think it'd be cool to see a win-loss record against each Elite Four member instead of just the losses
Wins = total - losses
28 total attempts counting the winning run. So he had a 4:24 win:loss rate against Lorelei, 2:2 against Agatha, and 1:2 against the champion.
Yeah just need to post total battles @misteral9045

charmander was one of the first runs he did. would probably be much better if he did it again today.

I know, I know 😉
Should have thrown in another joke about the charmander fanbase just to empathize that it was not meant as a serious comment 😉
I'm a Charmander Stan and this didn't make sense to me either. Elite Four run was similar in difficulty to Charmander's, maybe a little easier with Blizzard in the move pool, but taking minutes off Brock should definitely rank Cubone higher.
i think the times on the left are a great idea but the little pic in the bottom right is making these a bit too cluttered to look at. these vids just being gameplay without too many things on screen was always their charm! great as always

I really love the data on the sides of the run in this and the raichu video, props to the editor for them. They're not too intrusive (since the space was usually blank anyway) but are nice to keep track of progress or to quickly look back on
So something I adore in Gen 1 is how some of the TMs really fit the Pokemon's inspiration or lore.
Cubone learning Water Gun is tears.
JigglyPuff learning Water Gun and Thunder Wave is Water Balloon's and Static. Water Pulse being Gen 3 and Onward instead.
Yes, Lickitung without Lick is weird af, but ultimately the fact some Pokemon learn sets made sense to the lore is very fun to speculate about.
Sandshrew is born underground and spends majority of its life underground yet doesn’t learn dig on lv up lol

Wouldn't Charizard have been the best match? It's a flyer, so no Ground moves, and he still has Gyarados as well that way.
I know you tend to pick the Pokemon that's super effective vs. you, as that's the closest mirror to the real starters, just pointing out that the argument exists Charizard would have been more difficult.
It's weak to Blizzard, though (Fire doesn't resist Ice in Gen 1)

This run was so funny, thanks jrose, you've been entertaining me for years now. Talking about the rival starter, I don't know, maybe venusaur would have made the run harder. First of all, blastoise relies on bubble/water gun for too long, while venusaur uses razor leaf which is broken in gen 1. And outspeed cubone, so good luck with that. Second thing, gyarados has a decent bulk, has hydro pump like blastoise and is immune to ground moves, and venusaur is just better than exeggutor which is not a threat at all. I've been asking you for long time now, but I really want to see the sandslash run, which I believe will be able to do a great run, definitely the best ground type in gen 1: bulky, decent speed, good attack, great movepool
