      Not only grinding becomes much easier to evolve the mons, you can also trade them back overlvled right after and they'd still obey the og savefile and continu the game with the overlvled starter.

    Gyarados is based on a myth about carp who were strong enough to not only swim upriver, but jump over the dragon gate. Passing that test granted them ability to fly, and those flying carp were dragons.
    Which is to say: They didn't "turn into dragons" and that let them fly, Chinese "dragons" are the carp version of Superman. They're fish that fly first, and "dragons" second.

    You struggle with grass starters because you don't really get supporting pokemon to vary your team and when you do they're 10 levels lower than the foes
    Level is part ofthe damage calculation, so you take a lot more damage when lower leveled

    • @tsawy6
      @tsawy6 5 месяцев назад +15

      Yeah, damage and toughness are both quadratic with level, cuz of hp, defense, attack and level.

      Seems harsh to include level in the calculation when it already includes stats which depend on level.

    • @Dairunt1
      @Dairunt1 3 месяца назад

      To have a good team in Living Dex I recommend having a "main", "support" and an "HM mule".
      Your main is the Pokemon you want to evolve, supporters are any other high level Pokemon you have who will fight if your main faints, or if you're "switch grinding". That will keep your supporters leveled.
      Catch anything you don't have, but only evolve what you'll consider "main". Once they're evolved and they're leveled enough, they become "support" for your new main. I've been doing this on my Red playthrough and I'm having a surprisingly balanced team while Living Dexing.

    • @tsawy6

    43:55 The concept of the food you eat being permanently stuck inside of you because you can't relieve yourself is kind of horrifying.
    I mean sure you don't *have* to eat in the pokemon universe but imagine having to second-guess if you *really* wanted that hamburger.
    On the other hand since food is tied directly to your contest stats that means if they could than it would possible for them to literally shit their brains out, which is an equally horrifying outcome. Maybe it's for the better that they have to hold it all in their entire lives.

    One huge tip for level grinding in Gen 3 (and ORAS later):
    If you have access to a second Gen 3 game to Record Mix with, there is a strat known as Blissey Bases. This is where someone sets up their Secret Base with their team having three level 100 Blisseys that all do not know any damage or recovery moves. This allows anyone else that mixes records with them to grind against these Blissey repeatedly for super fast XP. (because Blissey is the pokemon with the single highest base XP given by far; it gives 2.5x more XP than Ludicolo or Shiftry, and XP given scales with the target's level, so level 100 Blissey give crazy xp)
    Also, fun fact that isn't really useful: Gabby and Ty will stop changing locations after you beat them 255 times. They will just always be at Route 111, but still able to continuously rematch.

      @nerddwarf 5 месяцев назад +7

      Design philosophy behind Dragon types in Gen 1&2:
      Dragon resists your starter's primary type. It does not matter which starter. It also resists Electric. (Electric is the earliest available Special type.)
      It is owned by the final member of the Elite 4, as a soft-check to hinder your starter and encourage catching something other than the earliest Pokémon available and/or have a mixed team.
      There is 1 Dragon available.
      Gen 2, exact same concept, except now the 8th Gym has the Dragon, and there's a new (significantly less powerful) Dragon on her team. And the final member of the Elite 4 is now the Champion/the Champion now has Dragons instead of a mixed team.)
      New set of gyms with #16 being a notable mixed team, followed by the not-so-secret mixed team boss on Mt.Silver

    I know this is very "Um AcTuAlLy", but hopefully it helps explain your issues with Torkoal. You had issues with Torkoal because your grass starter was the only Pokemon even close to the same or above level. The level of the Pokemon and its stats (which are also determined by its level) are both used in damage calculation. They "pretty much" (level gets reduced in the calculation) multiply together and then get divided by the opponents defense. Your Jirachi and Numel's were all 10'ish levels bellow Torkoal thus you did significantly less damage to Torkoal due to its high defense, and you took significantly more damage from Torkoal due to being very under leveled.

    • @xeladas
      @xeladas 5 месяцев назад +25

      The issue was less the absolute difference, and more the relative difference, Pokemon stats grow linearly with level, so when Lyra was fighting Pokémon twice the Jirachi's level those Pokemons' stats were about twice that of the Jirachi, so were doing about double the damage they normally would (while if Jirachi attacked it'd be doing half damage)

    Awesome, a new vid! You really tried to do this as fairly as possible. I was a bit more liberal with restrictions (e.g. used distributions, turbo speed, etc.). This allowed me to catch up with you and even get well ahead without as much hassle, the need to play Colosseum as long, or XD at all. I think I started replaying from Gen I around the time you were doing Gen II, but I had finished my Gen I-III Living Dexes by the end of Jan 2024. Then I started Gen IV and finished the Living Dex there in May.
    P.S. Easiest way to mass trade is using Box. That's how I moved 150+ Pokemon without trade fodder, which was nice since trading in mGBA is hit and miss. I found trading on MelonDS a lot quicker and more enjoyable.
    Anyway, tanks for making these vids. They introduced me to the concept of a Living Dex and are the reason I went for this challenge. It's been fun. :)

    Cheers to you Lyra :) I thought I was the only one crazy enough to do this! Emerald is my favorite Pokémon game and I have a massive love for Gen 3 as a whole, so much so that in 2014 when I was like 16 I got a bit obsessive and decided on makkng Emerald my Living PC for every Pokémon in the National Dex; I numbered my PC boxes 1-30, 31-60, 61-90, etc. the same as you The concept sprung from the fact that there is an in‐game glitch in the Emerald's Battle Frontier that allows you to duplicate Pokémon, and my want for a well to send said copies along to future generations without losing the ability to have the originals still live in their Gen 3 homes 😊 That said, my neurospicy ADD brain won't allow me to duplicate them before evolutions and stuff because all the ones IN Emerald need to be their own individuals. I have had the support of many great people in getting to my goal who have let me borrow a GameShark to get the in-game events I missed as a kid + a Japanese GBA, GameCube, and copies of games I didn't already own to get the Japanese event exclusives! I'm only 30ish Pokémon away from finishing my mission, but adult life has prevented me from being able to put as much time into it as I did when I started, so it's now a fun little thing I pick away at any time I have a vacation :)

    Wow its great that you got this done. I'm at 365 with 191 hours on my main copy of Emerald. I own two copies of Emerald, 2 fire red, 1 sapphire, 1 ruby, and 1 colosseum(i had leaf green as a kid, its somewhere at home, but my mom hid it from me as a kid and im still trying to find it). First i got a living Hoenn dex in Emerald. This was pretty simple. Feebas took me 3 hours and grinding was annoying. What was most scary about this was my Sapphire copy actually got corrupted. Luckily i was able to load up the game normally and trade all the necessary pokemon i needed to emerald. Once i got a living hoenn dex i got one Johto starter from Birch. Then i traded the entire living dex to my other emerald copy. Fun fact about this you don't need to leave the trade room for it to count in the pokedex. So i got my 2nd Johto starter on my second emerald copy and sent it to my main emerald. Then i restarted my 2nd emerald copy, traded every pokemon again, and went through the game with an already completed pokedex(before the first gym). As soon as i completed the elite 4 i got my last Johto starter.
    Recently ive been getting everything from Fire Red over and emerald extra safari zone. All i have left are the Leaf Green exlusives and bs legendaries and mythicals. I'm hoping i can find my old copy of leaf green, because i dont want to spend $100 on leaf green ffs. And then theres mew, lugia, Ho-Oh, Celebi, Jirachi, and Deoxys. Those will take some more "effort". I have a E reader so i could try to reprint my own cards. Then theres also the Pomeg berry glitch i can try too. My Colosseum copy has been rough. Its a hard game to play. Leveling is just broken. Endlessly grinding a few levels and its still not enough to beat those trainers with tournament competitive teams. I think i missed a few shadow pokemon so i should probably just restart the save anyways.
    I love gen 3 which is why I'm actually trying to do this stupid challenge. Only in gen 3 do you need every single game and the spinoffs to finish the pokedex. Is it bs and stupid, yes, but i love it so much. Getting all that hardware and software set up to get everything has been fun. The biggest help to all of this is the emerald cloning glitch. Getting unlimited masterballs, evelution items, and stat boosting items is incredible. Im hoping i can finish off the normal dex by the end of the year. Just have to find my old gba sp at home and finish it out

    I still have my Diamond safe file where I have a complete Pokédex. I also used Emerald a lot, plus I traded with my cousin back then to achieve this incredible feat. Good times.

    This little monologue at the end with Yellow‘s Theme in the background gave me chills, because, it was my first. And I haven‘t touched it in over12 years.
    Chills, man. Chills.

    i'm so glad you didn't bitch about the brail puzzle, like it's something a kid would have seen irl and would have actually taught them that yes those weird bumps are actually a language

    Earlier this year I completed the Gen 3 Pokedex too for the first time (although no living dex) and it was an unique experience. The checklist on your website helped me a lot.

    Great job on this challenge! It's been fun keeping up with it since the beginning. I still think the first two gens have the best rewards for completing the Pokedex. Getting a real Gameboy Printer and printing out that diploma in Yellow for the first time after all that grueling work collecting all the Pokemon on real hardware made it all worth it.

    Was definitely fun being in the streams when possible, seeing it all laid out and done is so nice. Congrats on finally getting through what felt like a years-worth of effort! (Though I do not approve of this Chikorita hate at the end!)
    So..... same thing in Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team next week? Kiddin', lookin' forward to revisiting Gen 1!

    Commenting just to say I have a lot of respect for you to have done a living dex. You definitely did make some of it harder for yourself in some ways, but well, I did too for my 3 living dexes.
    Et gg pour le site web, c'était cool de voir une option en français mdr.

    for the flannery if you get a marill right before her gym they know defense curl and roll out defense curl has a hidden interaction where if you use it before roll out it doubles the power and you just use whiney strats azurill just rolls through the next 3 gyms in 5 seconds

    Finally. Been waiting on this for quite sometime. Glad you're done.
    Late edit: You're going for Yellow Living Dex? Does that mean you have to... reset it 4 times? Both stages of both fossils, one of each eeveelution and all 3 stages of starters? What else is there?

    Lyra: "I'm a pro!"
    Also Lyra: _does not know the type of Gyarados despite having held one 3 times_
    Lyra, I think you revealed that you're good at catching Pokémon.
    So get some rest.
