The barrel change for 1.6 did two things. First it made them spawn on floor divisible by 5 specifically on the wooden platform, which only happens on the floor 5 variants. The 2nd is barrel on wooden platforms used to never respawn. The first time you loaded into a floor that had a wooden platform was the total amount of barrels that would ever spawn on the floor. 21:27, in this case 3. You can reset the floor and get a different amount of barrels but it will never be greater than the number of the first time the floor was loaded. This total number goes down by 1 every time you break a barrel on a wooden platform. So if you break 1 and leave you can only get 2 to spawn at max on the floor reset until you can't get any left. As of 1.6 this total number now resets every year so you can get more barrels instead of the being forever empty. This used to be an thing in 1.5 perfection speedruns where I don't break any barrels outside of the the floor 24 club so when I came back for the danger in the deep quest there would be barrels for the chance of me getting the iridium needle as the barrel count is shared between the mines difficulties. Skull caverns uses the same function as far as I'm aware, it is just tied to the floor number not the layout.
21:45 A little misconception here: Before 1.6 these crates, and crates on similar flooring never respawned. You were able to smash them once and never again. So CA did make our life a little easier by making them respawn every year. Random crates and barrel still appear at every floor, too, i don't think anything has changed there.
