For Phoebe: her lead Dusclops *does* always use Protect until the first turn you use a move. Key word, until. If you open the bag and use a useless item, like a pokeball 10 times, you can burn all protect PP as she will use it over and over until you attack. Video source of this trivia - Alpharad's Mudkip solo run
Idk how this is coded but back when I completed the Pokedex in Emerald and grinded everything on the E4 there were a couple times when her Dusclops didn't use Protect on the first turn. Same with Drake's Shelgon which supposedly has the same behavior. It must've been like a 1 in 100 chance or smth but it can happen
Funny enough I did this challenge my senior year of high school but gave up around the weather institute. I remeber the reason for me stopping was that I was getting bored of doing the same thing ever battle very slowly. So good job JRose! I respect the commitment.
It's one of those really grindy repetitive challenges, not everybody can do them or should. These challenges are more of a huge test of patience and focus than anything else, like with completing a bare-fisted Dark Souls run.
Cool little mechanic: at 34:21, Vigoroth gets taken out by toxic damage, and since it dies to a passive effect, the game reads that as Slaking’s first turn in battle, so its first ACTIONABLE turn is being read as its second, which is why it looks like it’s loafing around on its first turn
I spotted the first turn loafing around and was like wtf lmao is this an unknown bug? I don't pretend to know everything about these games but I thought I knew a lot of the big bugs and glitches

I feel like Encore could've been used a lot more in the early game, especially with moves like Rock Tomb and Constrict to lower speed. Continually locking Makuhita into Bulk Up instead of just once, locking Manectric into Howl to prevent damage and locking Numel into Sunny Day to lower chip damage are just some of the strategies I think could've been used to make things easier. It probably would've taken even LONGER so I understand why it wasn't used that often but I still feel it could've helped out a lot more.
Yeah I thought more Encore would be better. There was one point in Roxanne where he Encored a Rock Throw though, so maybe you don't use it to avoid that
@@douglaswills4624I don't see how it couldn't be viable against, say, Manectric. Rock Tomb to lower speed and then Encore the Howl. When the encore is about to end, do it again. Infinite howl. Unless Gen 3 is different than modern mechanics for how encore works.
Just saw JRose beat Watson, it's insane how many of these battles Shuckle is winning on single-digit HP on the lucky runs. JRose is one tenacious shuckler!
Might be buried by now but there is a good way of levelling up your Pokémon in the day centre. If you choose the Acro bike and then head to the mud slide thing above the desert (normally you need the Mach bike to go up it) you can just keep something pressed against the "Up" button/key and you will repeatedly move. You can leave this going overnight or whatever and will max out your level no problem.
I wish they did Ice first and Rock last for once because Ice has the opposite situation to Rock: Ice gyms are usually 7th or 8th when everyone and their grandma can hit them super effectively. Not to mention the two Ice type Elite 4 members who both are basically Water type trainers in disguise because Ice on its own would be a joke at this point.
The point of rock type gyms being first is that you can't just click through them with normal type attacks as long as you aren't really over leveled, so you find out how type effectiveness works
@@rainpooper7088also generally there's rock types you've seen on your journey to the first gym but not really many ice types. I agree tho ice would be rad

Just a heads up as someone who did a Feebas Diamond/Pearl solo run since you mentioned you're doing one near the end for Platinum: As someone who did that same thing years ago, it's almost a necessity to use an egg move (Dragonbreath) because of the changes made to Struggle during Gen 3 -> Gen 4 that make it damn near impossible to use a Feebas that only hatches with Splash; the Feebas with an Egg move was my second attempt. Instead of dealing recoil damage based on how much damage you dealt, you simply lose ¼ of your health every time you use it. I’m guessing they did this because of Wobuffet - two Wobuffet locked into battle with Leftovers was a huge problem in competitive Pokemon in generation 3 but I digress. Since it’s your only means of damage for Feebas until Level 15, it becomes a major problem, especially given how frail a level 1 Pokémon is, let alone one with such awful stats. And since I wasn't using not using items in battle, not even against wild Pokémon, this makes it considerably more daunting than it would have been compared to any of the past generations. In the first two routes, there’s only one Pokémon that you can burn Splash PP against without risking being knocked out against, Kricketot, who has Bide and Growl. Kricketot can only be found at night which isn’t that big an issue since you can just change the clock. The bigger issue is that it learns Bide which is pretty hard to avoid. While you can try to flee, since Feebas is only level 1 and the chances of fleeing Kriketot or any other Pokemon are based on speed, it’s unlikely that will succeed and this is even further compounded by the lack of resources one has at the start of the game, let alone how few one will have going forward. It’s all a matter as to whether they use Bide before getting KO’d/before Growl lowers your attack to the point where you're dealing less than 1/4. And while you can always try to run until you succeed and face a Bidoof or Starly, it’s not like the other local Pokémon will be much easier to beat even if you do have Struggle and full HP. Both of them possess the move Growl which will lower Feebas’ already meager attack even further.
@@Eroil Well for one i'm assuming JRose is acquiring his Feebas the same way I did/the same way he did in Emerald which is via an Egg he bred and in Gen 4, eggs start out at level 1, not 5. For another, Feebas still doesn't learn any moves until level 15 which because it's part of the erratic egg group means getting the EXP for that is excruciating. It's worse in Platinum than Diamond/Pearl because the latter actually gives you access to Hidden Power fairly early so you could conceivably make a rush for it and hope you get lucky with an HP that will help you out at one of the points you'll get stuck (the first Purugly/Team Galactic boss, the Grass gym which has the benefit of a good grinding spot due to Cheryl healing you after every encounter, etc.) before you get access to Surf or Blizzard. There's also Abomasnow at the Ice gym who took an absurd amount of time to beat but that's way later in the game when you have more tools to approach that battle.
@@CazTheGamerGuy afaik usually he uses a cheat engine to replace one of the starters to Feebas, this is what he does in most of his videos. So you need to wait until after the first gym, but it's entirely obtainable. Hope that helps! Thanks for all the videos! They're always a treat! Keep at it!
How did the Zigzagoon level up to 91 and evolve to Linoone? Experience Share and fighting on a higher level route? I get it's an investment, but it's also lowering your pickup chance in the mean time a lot, because you can't hold Experience Share and use Pickup at the same time. EDIT: Gets answered much later in the video, rare candies from Pickup.
Ok, so you said in the opening this would be significantly harder due to a lack of roll out, but iirc, in emerald specifically, there's a guy in Mauvaile who will teach it to one pokemon. Will edit if you bring this up.
Jrose you always know how to deliver a video right when the world seems to need a good day. Keep doing what you do we all appreciate your work more than words can express.
Isn’t TM44 Rest available in Lilycove? Seems like an obvious choice for a Toxic-stall strategy. Sleep Talk and Substitute are options available via Move Tutor as well. 🤔🤔 I mean, mad props for grinding for Leftovers instead, but Rest seems like a slam dunk even in combination with Leftovers. Edit: Ah, I see; “I thought I might ultimately regret deleting a move” strikes again. Edit 2: Gee, if only there were a way to heal poison or prevent it with a move, then that Tentacruel might not be so dangerous. 😅 Edit 3: Ah, he’s finally discovered Substitute. 😂 Edit 4: NO STEVEN FIGHT?! 😢 I was so curious/sadistic about seeing whether you’d need to pivot off of Toxic entirely in order to get a moveset that can deal with his Toxic-immune Steel types.
@@stormbornapostle5188Yeah, that's why I went for Duskull, an evolved pokemon would actually be reasonable X3 Was kind of a harsher thing for him to say I suppose, but I can't blame him after suffering through this run lol

Longest run? Better start watching now then 😁 (if you see this comment I love your content, it helped me big times when life was kinda rough, keep up the good mood and the good work 🔥)
The things you do for us JRose, I think I speak for all of us when I say thank you for bringing us this content. I know some videos are more of a struggle than others, but we appreciate it all!
Jrose: *spends 30 minutes of the video absolutely suffering through the elite four, only to get stonewalled at the champion* Also Jrose: *absolutely CRANKS those same elite four members in like 1 try each by finally using rollout/substitute, like he probably should have been the entire time*
My hair started falling out. "You're tank shuckle! Use it's OG wrecking ball set!" But I guess he's a masochist because he could have just used Rest over Leftovers as well. Would have been even better than Safeguard against Tentacruel.
I feel like Rollout in Mauville and Swagger in Slateport could've been helpful move tutor moves to learn for this run, but I love all your runs JRose! Edit: Rollout does appear! It genuinely surprises me that Shuckle can't learn defence curl until the battle frontier, could've made it significantly easier
At the end of the video, did we just get a teaser about Feebas in Pokemon Platinum? That's REALLY interesting. Looking forward to that. Anyway, amazing video even though this run HAD to be brutal for Shuckle. Once again, you did it with Shuckle though it was hardly the curbstomp that this was in Crystal. Also can't believe how long this vid was, lol. But yeah, was nice to see some variety on a Pokemon NOT known for variety in strategy. Would Defense Curl have even worked in this game, assuming Shuckle could even get it? That's what I'd like to know.
After an outrageously tedious, insanely long and extremely difficult run, where Jrose ends up with exactly 69 HP, the only possible, logical and fitting way that you can describe this run, is this: Nice! 🤣🤣🤣
"We beat the run and entered the Hall of Fame, but you know it's not over yet-" "No! No, you shut up, it IS over yet! I am NOT going after Steven with a Shuckle! Skarmory will try Toxic from turn one, I am NOT going through Meteor Falls just to find that out firsthand!" "…Okay, then, jeez. Touchy, much?"
Jrose I had this video playing while I was on my walk today, and I loved every second of it, it was probably such a pain to get through on your end but a very entertaining video nonetheless!
At end: Well played! I know you had to do a fair amount of rejiggering for champion, but you still made it through! (Also, I can understand why you didn't attempt Steven, I wouldn't either after that epic champion fight -- my wild guess is that Shuckle wouldn't be able to beat Steven anyways, but you never know.)

I get it's an investment, but it's also lowering your pickup chance in the mean time a lot, because you can't hold Experience Share and use Pickup at the same time. EDIT: Gets answered much later in the video, rare candies from Pickup.
I apologize in advance for the fresh underworld you will be experiencing in this challenge. This thumbnail and title made me immediately go "Oh no."
Was looking for something to fall asleep to for the last hour. Guess the universe was just keeping me awake in order to enjoy this
I love this. MDB's playthrough of Fire Red with a Shuckle was what first got me into watching these runs.
Do not fckle with Shuckle. Mewtwo has been put on notice. My appointment is measurable and my day is perfected.
havent started watching the video yet but i just wanted to say i love whenever you do an emerald run!
My man is really giving a new meaning to "Don't Fuckle with the Shuckle."
One more video before bed...
31:10 "Norman leads with Spinda, and of course, we lead with Shuckle."
Dry humor like this kills me.
Ok, so you said in the opening this would be significantly harder due to a lack of roll out, but iirc, in emerald specifically, there's a guy in Mauvaile who will teach it to one pokemon. Will edit if you bring this up.
You remembered correctly. Don't know why he didn't get it.
I believe he does call out that there's a move tutor but chooses not to anyway
This might be my favorite JRose11 video ever. All the different strats, twists and turns. Truly an epic ride.
Jrose you always know how to deliver a video right when the world seems to need a good day. Keep doing what you do we all appreciate your work more than words can express.
The dedication is inspiring. Love these impossible challenges!
So rollout is available in emerald in mauville city. The guy by the gym or pokecenter will teach it.
Watch the whole video next time. 😂
Jrose? You're my goddamn hero. The effort you put into this... is astounding. I applaud you... you absolute lunatic lol
Edit 3: Ah, he’s finally discovered Substitute. 😂
Edit 4: NO STEVEN FIGHT?! 😢 I was so curious/sadistic about seeing whether you’d need to pivot off of Toxic entirely in order to get a moveset that can deal with his Toxic-immune Steel types.
I have determined that the only people who enjoy Shuckle are people who do not wear socks while playing
Whoo boy. Imagine if Shuckle could get Foul Play. I wish.
Imagine if it got fissure. The salt would be immense
Leech seed is my pick. It would heal it a ton.
So well presented buddy! You even get me interested with Pokemon games with your energy in these videos.
Yay Shuckle!!! Now in the spirit of the Mewtwo run, how about Rayquaza? 😅
"Don't fuckle with Shuckle"
- Shuckle Shucky the 3rd
1:10:39 that glalie voice was spot on 😂
😂😂 lmfao I thought to myself is that really what it sounds like??
"Offensive dusclops is a bad Pokémon"
Jrose 8 years later: can duskull beat emerald with only offensive moves?
Dusclops (+SpDef, -Spd nature) with Shadow Ball, Focus Punch, Will-o-Wisp, and Icy Wind has served me very well in the past in Emerald.
@@stormbornapostle5188Yeah, that's why I went for Duskull, an evolved pokemon would actually be reasonable X3 Was kind of a harsher thing for him to say I suppose, but I can't blame him after suffering through this run lol
Jrose approaches these runs like artisans of Japanese Calligraphy Ink. The effort may be lost on some folks, but you can feel the energy put into the product 👌
What a great video. I love Shuckle and as he's my favourite, it was nice to see the journey happen
Longest run?
Better start watching now then 😁 (if you see this comment I love your content, it helped me big times when life was kinda rough, keep up the good mood and the good work 🔥)
Everybody gangsta until Jrose uploads a two hour run.
The Nosepass sprite’s arm/leg looks like his lips are blowing a kiss and now I can’t unsee it
YAAAAY.😃
Always always Always a wonderful day
ight when a new Jrose video pops up.
Now it's "Shuckle time."
"Yeeaaah, Shuckle."
😄👍
The things you do for us JRose, I think I speak for all of us when I say thank you for bringing us this content. I know some videos are more of a struggle than others, but we appreciate it all!
You don't messle with shuckle
"If it were modern wrap"
Me: it would have less mumbling and heavy autotune, and more talent?😂
Its Midnight.
Hard to sleep.
Suddenly, Jrose11 video pops up!
Welp, time to watch this epic run lol
That Bad Religion sample in your music is dope.
Don't fuggle with shuggle
This upload’s timing was perfect I just finished all your Nuzlocke videos. I can’t w8 to see this conclusion
Jrose videos always hit so different time to vibe out 🙌🏾🙌🏾
shuckle was making rock tomb look like a 50% accurate move in this video
Let's go Shuck!!!
Jrose: *spends 30 minutes of the video absolutely suffering through the elite four, only to get stonewalled at the champion*
Also Jrose: *absolutely CRANKS those same elite four members in like 1 try each by finally using rollout/substitute, like he probably should have been the entire time*
My hair started falling out.
It genuinely surprises me that Shuckle can't learn defence curl until the battle frontier, could've made it significantly easier
...he...he did use Rollout. I seriously don't grasp how so many people are commenting this. Did y'all just...not watch the video?
@@stormbornapostle5188 made this comment around the Wattson battle and then forgot and didn't delete it
I can't wait for a modern Shuckle challenge, Shuckle actually gets to be funny now with Contrary, Shell Smash, and Rest.
Yet still not great because it doesn't learn freaking Body Press.
Yay. I'm struggling to sleep. Cheers for the good work. Keep it up ❤
5:08
Jrose: can you imagine doing this at normal 1x speed?
Me: _listening to this video at 1.5x speed_
*oh god, please no*
This is why I love Shuckle! It just lives. Throw a whole move set at it, and it just lives on.
To quote dorkly, “Shuckle”
50:45 that’s some dedication to get the lefties! But isn’t there a free leftovers you can get in the wrecked ship?
I remember when I solo'd Heart Gold with my Shiny Blue Shuckle... (nicknamed "Shucklord"). Good times. Took forever.
So fact about the ability Sturdy. Until Gen 5 it only protected you from moves that are 1 hit ko (Sheer Cold, Fissure, and Guillotine)
Congratulations Jrose, hard fought. Proud of you.
i know these long videos can take their toll on you but trust me, we, the fans love them, this was amazing to watch my dude.
Me: "I can't watch movies anymore, I just lack the attention span nowadays, y'know?"
Also me: "90 minutes of Jrose? Hell yes!"
At least im early for the video for once. Currently you havent beaten roxanne yet. Jeez this looks hard. Gz for doing this run man!
What's "Gz"?
Been falling asleep to your impossible challenge playlist lately and now I got a new one woot
This really highlights just how much Emerald relies on RNG shenanigans for its difficulty. So much Double Team, Acc dropping and Attract.
these are just so entertaining. thank you for continuing to make these
After an outrageously tedious, insanely long and extremely difficult run, where Jrose ends up with exactly 69 HP, the only possible, logical and fitting way that you can describe this run, is this:
Nice! 🤣🤣🤣
Who started that trend?
@@dawnsbuneary Jrose himself of course
@@RoyArkon if you can't answer my question seriously, don't reply.
@@dawnsbuneary Dude, I was serious, it was Jrose.
I rewatch the old videos anyway, I can do reruns all year long :D
your narration is king
"We beat the run and entered the Hall of Fame, but you know it's not over yet-"
"No! No, you shut up, it IS over yet! I am NOT going after Steven with a Shuckle! Skarmory will try Toxic from turn one, I am NOT going through Meteor Falls just to find that out firsthand!"
"…Okay, then, jeez. Touchy, much?"
No joke, i was just checking in to see if he had a new video, 8mins ago!
Love the content
I love watching your videos while doing my daily chores, it gets me motivated to be productive and entertained. Keep up the great work! ❤
Also... patience. It's a virtue
You should do a Shuckathon where you solo run every gen with Shuckle back-to-back.
