Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch. - Игры
It's so inspiring to see how skilled Jrose is at pressing the A Button
He's good at pressing A. He's very, very good. With a little help, he could be the best.
@@thegreenmercenaryBest Jrose impression award goes to:
I heard he likes to press A at the poke'mon center
Some say he's perfected the art of pressing the A button so well that whenever a Pokémon's evolving, he finesse's the A button in a way to cancel the evolution like how the B button would.
But can he beat Red/Blue with only 35 A presses?
One must imagine Sisyphus happy.

The answer: “yes”
The journey from laughing at Caterpie's "defensive" stats to being amazed by its bulk, and the power of friendship coming in full force after your pre-champion speech? Absolutely perfect.
The power of friendship and also force-feeding Caterpie PEDs until it’s about to explode.
When JRose “mispronounces” Tangela’s name the way I have always pronounced it.
I thought it was correct myself
Pokemon logic is awesome. When confronted with an almost 30 foot, 460lb snake made out of rocks you can just have your 1ft long, 6 pound worm literally throw itself at it a bunch of times until the rock snake passes out.
Caterpie is made of steel, so he's capable of doing that.😅😅😅

Hey Jrose! Just wanted to say, as a truck driver for road construction, your play by play is awesome! After watching a few videos and memorizing your usually paths to beat these games, it’s incredibly fun to listen to you and VERY fun to cheer you on when you struggle on certain parts!
I'm glad I'm not the only one this acts as a podcast for.
😊
Same here! I drive 100s of miles a week for work, listening to Jrose, and never feel like I’m missing out on the content :) 😊
100% agree with this. on my drives from anywhere I love listening to Jrose and his play by play makes it so easy to understand what is going on!
Seconding this, I love listening to these videos while doing chores and I know almost entirely what is going on without the visuals because of how he does the play-by-plays. Even when he does the thing where instead of saying what he gets hit with to kill him in a frustrating way, he just sighs exasperatedly and says "I have no words," I know it's still at least something strong that was BS like a crit hydro pump from Blastoise right before beating the champion. It's part of why something as tedious as a solo CATERPIE run can be entertaining nonetheless. I love Jrose's voiceovers!
So according to the Smogon calculator, at 1:46:00 the Caterpie has the equivalent stats to an untrained, perfect IVd base 189/173/192/120/191/176 stats pokemon. That's a BST of 1041, about 44% higher than Arceus

This isn't a challenge run anymore, it's the fucking CATERPIE full length movie
Caterpie can only learn String Shot and Tackle, so you shouldn’t be able to pass Lavender Tower. The fact that the video is 2 hours long suggests otherwise. Color me intrigued…
Can't you use TMs? I haven't seen the video yet, but i'm guessing it'll be them what saves this run

Struggle strats
Hey JRose! Just wanna explain what was going on with the Charizard Slash thing. The game DOES check to see if an attack will KO, but it picks the attack that will do the most damage - by running a quick, hidden damage calculation. The battle you got Slash was because Slash high roll crit during the test damage check, and the AI saw it did more damage than Flamethrower, so that's what it picked.
I don’t normally have the money to donate, but your content has gotten me through some tough times and I really appreciate how far you’re willing to put yourself through these frustrating challenges for our entertainment. You’re awesome!

Never thought of a 2 hour episode featuring Caterpie in different games.
The baby of Rayquaza deserves to shine

Two hours with a Caterpie? Must be a speed run.
A world record that rivals Mewtwo!
That Agatha fight was about as narrow a win that you can hope for. 4% plus you need the correct pp management. Honestly, you earned that win
I noticed you didn't grind up your extra caterpie into candies. In Let's Go, you can send Pokemon to the professor who'll grind them up and send them back to you as candy. If you send a bunch of the same Pokemon at once, you get that species specific candy back.
Shhh, he might see this comment and cry.
i literally thought of this at the start of the let's go segment
Maybe this was for the best...is Caterpie still a winner if he's got there by eating all his Caterpie friends?
@@southboundagain There can be only one.
He grinds them up into candie? That's horrible lol
Starts up video and remembers in one of the first videos where the series started where JRose said: "Not going to do Kakuna, Metapod, Caterpie and Magikarp because they don't affect Ghost pokémon, so those will just get stuck in lavender town." Curious how this will end.
The answer is in the comment you posted. 😊😊😊
But indeed Kakuna and Weedle can affect them
@@antoinepolnareff8970 No Kakuna can't unless it's evovled from Weedle.
Worse, actually. Kakuna doesn't get Harden if it evolves from Weedle in Gen 1. So either way it's impossible because Weedle couldn't finish and Kakuna has worse attack.
Thanks for such an effort. Your dedication is next level!!
Omg thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoy the videos!
Absolutely incredible video. Was curious why it was so long knowing Red/Blue would be impossible and then seeing FireRed/LeafGreen was quite entertaining but I did not see Lets go coming and it was just a spectacular ending. FireRed LeafGreen is not Gen1, or else Caterpie never would've made it past Lavender Town Pokémon Tower since Struggle (Normal) didn't hurt Ghosts in Gen1 Red Blue Yellow.

Merry Christmas to you and your family, glad you love the videos!
So with the last leg of the run, I'm not too surprised the defense ended up outshining the attack. After all, as attack gets higher, well, only attack gets higher. But on the bulk side you have both defense and HP. So if every stat can be maxed out individually, it makes sense the bulk would be better just because there's more numbers to increase there.

What a treat. No spoilers, everyone should watch it all the way through.
That was my first time seeing anything about Pokemon Lets Go, and I have to say it was pretty cool learning about the game's mechanics through the lens of a challenge run like this. I cant believe Agatha was just barely possible, that was awesome to witness
I expected the FireRed/LeafGreen part when you started the run in gen 1 because of Struggle being a normal move in those games but I didn't see Let's Go coming until I saw that there was an hour of video left when you started showing that the gen 3 Elite Four was impossible. I followed your Pokemon challenges for a long time and this is easily one of, if not the best one of them all. Part of me wonders if Weedle would be able to beat Let's Go but I don't blame you for not trying that for a while.
It's likely possible, since the WORST part of the challenge really is just the low attack, much less with caterpie's problem with ghosts- the biggest issue that Weedle WOULD have is, just... being unable to poison steel and poison types.
I'd be perfectly fine with the metapod/kakuna runs starting with caterpie/weedle and evolving them. It's probably the only way they are even attemptable.
I agree since their first forms get tackle/poison sting, whereas their second forms only get harden and struggle when you run out of PP on all your moves.
even then, Gen 1 Metapod is impossible for the same reason as Caterpie and Magikarp. Gen 1 Kakuna is also probably impossible because its offensive stats are no better than Weedle, who simply cannot grind through the game either. But trying another generation might be worthwhile.
Honestly, I had rather having bypassed ghost Pokémon with a secondary Pokémon and sticking to Pokémon blue instead of
I actually tried this with weedle, and it’s attack stat actually goes down significantly when it evolves, making it impossible to beat Giovanni.
@@sergira111if it were just the channeler in Pokémon Tower I think I'd agree
But it's not really a run if you bypass Agatha
32:00 the FR caterpie sweeping brock was actually extremely satisfying to see, especially after the caterpie from Red having such a hard time 😹
I feel like Kakuna would be possible in Red and blue if it evolved from weedle since harden would give badge boost to Poison Sting
It really would be interesting to see that
Funny thing about that: Kakuna learns harden exclusively at level 1 in Gen 1. So if you evolve from Weedle, you don't get it.
lmao nvm then
@@Zebrakopf444 They fixed this in Gen 2, where Kakuna also learns Harden at level 7, so Weedle gets it after it evolves. So you could catch a Weedle in Red/Blue, trade it to Gen 2, evolve it and learn Harden, then trade it back to Red/Blue. Of course, this is arguably bending the rules, but at least it'd be a legitimate Kakuna caught in the game you're beating.
The "Congratulations, Champion!" screen with Caterpie is the first time a game of Pokemon literally left me in tears.
This Caterpie bonanza has got to be the greatest Christmas present. Thank you Jrose for all of the wonderful content this year. I wish you a merry Christmas.
Crazy he did three tediously long runs for 1 video. The patience is incredible
It actually says a lot for Pokemon Let's Go as a game that you can beef up even the weakest pokemon enough to be a viable team member if you're willing to put in the time
I've thoroughly enjoyed your content over the years, I work overseas alot and it has kept me sane. I wish all the best for you JRose. Wholeheartedly thank you.
Everybody gangsta until a trainer with a Max. level Caterpie with these stats scuttle by:
HP: 494
Attack: 374
Defense: 385
Sp. Attack: 352
Sp. Defense: 352
Speed: 407
The fact that those stats are close to Ultra Necrozmas stats 💀
Since weedle and caterpie can't solo gen 1, we should see if they and duo gen 1 instead!
Only jrose could make me watch caterpie tackle for 2 hours
Been a fan for almost 5 years now. Thank you Jrose11 for your spectacular content that you have shared with us. Its also because of your content that ignited my love for pokemon again and being able to try out newer games instead of staying as a gen-oner. 🤭 Terima kasih Jrose11 ikhlas dari penonton dari Malaysia. ❤
Knowing this was impossible because of the types, and seeing you make a 2 hour video about it, I knew some shenanigans were afoot... didn't think you'd actually do THAT though, I was expecting you to have just taken this long only to get to Lavender lol
The double fake out. Absolutely beautiful
Let's Go seems uniquely difficult for solo challenges. The gym leaders have great movesets. Very notably, Misty's starmie had scald!
The candies ruin everything. Let’s Go is pretty difficult if you don’t abuse them though.
So, uh... the only gym leader whose Pokémon all have a full moveset is Koga, and that's because three of them have Toxic/Protect. Literally everyone else has three or fewer moves on most, if not all, of their Pokémon. Sabrina's Alakazam has only Psychic and Night Shade, Misty's Starmie has only Scald (which, granted, is extremely powerful for that point in the game), Swift, and Psywave, Erika's Vileplume has only Mega Drain and Moonblast, etc. Even Giovanni's Rhydon doesn't have a fourth move, though in fairness, Rock Slide/Earthquake/Megahorn are all quite good.
Not only that, none of the Elite Four nor the Champion have four moves on *any* of their Pokémon. All of them have three moves, no exceptions.
@@blue_manatee3895 That’s odd. I mean I never noticed really noticed that expect for Sabrina’s Alakazam but that’s because I use the best Pokémon in the game Aloan Raticate. It probably won’t change much because unlike in gen 1 they actually have decent moves instead of the terrible garbage level up moveset they have in rb. I mean in gen 1 Alakazam basically only has 2 moves to attack and useless filler psywave. I really only feel the hurt in the campion fight on the Mega Pidgeot. It feels like they only have 3 moves max anyway expect for Agatha.
The old intro always hits so hard. Love it.
This is such an amazing video concept, and I can't wait to watch all of it.
Merry Christmas, Jrose!
(I admire so much the people who aren't skipping ahead on this one. Not coincidentally, I was the kid who found his copy of Pokemon Blue in the attic in 1998.)
EDIT: If you do ever decide to come back to Let’s Go and want to grind early, there’s a big pearl to get in Pewter once per day. And it looks like they found a way to manipulate the clock (that wasn’t known when I played), so you don’t even need to wait for more.
I do wonder what your sources were. I’m 99% sure Reddit has all of the info on how to grind candies correctly. But I’m glad you figured it out on your own!
Definitely worth not skipping ahead, the twists and turns are worth the whole watch!
Quick answer: No, Agatha is the deadroad because gen 1 struggle is a normal type move
Pokemon tower actually just like magikarp
Don’t ruin it
I think if he uses bide he can hit them cuz gen 1 is crazy like that
Sadly Caterpie can't use Bide, much less learn it.
Hearing that old intro music was like unlocking a core memory I can’t believe I’ve been watching your videos for so long but I’m still loving your content just like I did when I first started watching, keep up the amazing content my guy
You deserver all the youtube engagement in the world for, ON PURPOSE, doing more than a dozen hours in a run you knew you couldn't finish, just to restart it on Gen 3. Incredible, Jrose.
I love to fall asleep to Jrose's videos while imagining his pokemon going through kanto and beating all the gym leaders, though I usually only get to misty before I fall asleep.
You’re lucky… If I do any thinking while trying to sleep, I’ll NEVER fall asleep… I once ended up awake all night before a work shift and had to do my shift tired/ sleepy 🥱
What a nightmare of a day THAT was…
Caterpie has always been a low-key favorite of mine. The original anime series cemented him in like two episodes for me. I don't know what it is, the design also strikes me as making me feel comfortable.
Maybe it's nostalgia but caterpie has been my boy.

Might be a rare take, but Let's Go is actually one of my favorite pokemon games, even if I would've preferred wild battles and the inclusion of abiliities and battle items. But if you take it for what it is, it's definitely one of the more polished pokemon games altogether. Also the shiny hunting is pretty nice, that's where the catching mechanic really starts making sense
Getting catch chains and hoarding ungodly amount of candy is surprisingly fun. It’s also the only game where I can roll with a full team of unevolved Pokémon and still power them up to the max

A run with Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, and Kakuna might work! Unless Agatha is still mathematically impossible with two full sets of Poison Sting.
It would only be a full set of poison sting if Kakuna is caught without it being a Weedle before it evolves, as Kakuna by itself only knows harden.
