I think the reason why Rhydon has all these moves is that the 'monster' type Pokemon like Nidoking and Tyranitar are based on kaiju, which have all kinds of energy attacks and weapons in their movies. Rhydon has the same giant movepool both of them (as well as Aggron in Gen 3 and Duralodon in Gen 8) have.
18:37 Scott, I think I speak for your faithful viewers when I say we love the Venomoth joke. Yesterday I made a joke on your Exeggutor video that Venomoth is a Fire Grass type when you said it was Bug Poison, and it has 41 upvotes and 15 comments in less than a day. Please continue the joke, it’s always fun to have an inside joke for your channel, and I think Venomoth’s typing is a perfect one. If you want, put a little asterisk on it when you say it that tells new viewers to check the description, and you can explain it there.

Im making this comment again bc enjoy these memes. I think it’s establishing Scott in the space and its best for the community. Scott do you and don’t change, but i also feel like the fact that it’s brought up with the Canadian apology is apart of the bigger joke, which only makes Us love scott more. All good and carry on!
Venomoth was a Grass/ Water type here. That was so nice of him to thank all of those people for so long after Rydon's final play through. Classy move, Scott.
“I knew it!” -Me ~47 minutes into the video when one of the most obvious plot twists occurred. Scott’s a workaholic and a perfectionist, excellent qualities for a professional Pokémon player. Thanks for the content Scott
Not gonna lie, I LOVED the fake out! Listening to it in the background I quite literary thought "it's a shame with the schedule. A year ago he would do a fake out here and bring in Golem now" and just a few moments later you totally did! Great run as per usual!
I know I am late, but I want to add my voice to the other comments: I have been watching you for a while now and I am not at all tired of the Venomoth meme. I think it's part of your identity now and I would greatly miss it. Looking at the other comments, I am so proud of this community. Clearly they agree as well! But of course, if you WANT to get rid of it because it is not enjoyable for YOU anymore, go for it. It is your channel after all. I just don't think you should get rid of it because "it is not enjoyable for the audience" -> As a member of the audience, I greatly enjoy it!
I love your venomoth jokes, lol. 😂 in my own runs when i see venomoth, im making a joke about what type it is. Also, thanks so much for your hard work making fun content for us.
First play-through time 1 hour and 7 minutes. Me: "Wow, that's better than I was expecting! Good job, Rhydon!" Scott: "Those results are not very good." I suppose we didn't have the same expectations from a slow ground/rock type with slow growth rate.
Yeah, it'd be super messed up if it had an evolution that was ugly and stupid and looks like it put on a too-small lifejacket after a few too many beers. I'm sure glad that never happened.
Scott, truly, thank you... this video is everything I ever wanted: somebody to call out the ridiculousness of the way people name sandwich things after the "bread" instead of the "filling". This hard-hitting commentary is why you're my favorite RUclipsr!
Didn't know that I needed a gentle-voiced man prattling off Pokemon statistics in order to fall asleep in 2023 🤭 Love your videos Scott, take care and Happy Holidays!
All the earliest Pokemon were designed before types were a thing (It looks like they may have had stats for Lighning, Water, and Fire Resistances/Attack Power but that's it). As a result, they weren't made with elements in mind, which meant they they were assigned most if not all the TMs. So a common thread in these early Pokemon is that they seem to learn just about every random TM. Others in this group are the Nidos, Lapras, Kangaskhan, and Gengar.
the venomoth joke is the most unique part of your channel - paired with the interesting venomoth altered type pictures - if a viewer doesn't understand that you're joking, that's really a "them" problem
venomoth joke is like pp jokes, they never get old. also way to shout out the important people for 20 minutes. really means a lot to the people behind the scenes 🙏
@@iantaakalla8180 Limited Pokedex in Gen 1. Rhydon over-all is better than Golem though Golem sort of makes up for it by having access to Explosion. Onix is so bad and even Graveller is better than Onix. Onix is faster and gets Bind and Wrapping moves are inherently broken in Gen 1 but that really does not make up for it.
@@iantaakalla8180 Why wouldn't it be? Geodude is by far the most common Rock you encounter in the game, it's a trade evolution, which puts it in the same category as Gengar, and Golem has a BST on par with the starters (420 versus 425). There are Pokemon in Gen 1 that were designed with the intention of being bad, like Farfetch'd and Ditto, but I think in the ecosystem of Gen 1, the Geodude line was intended to be the "baseline" Rock-type, filling the same role that, say, the Abra line does for Psychic-types. Onix is the Pokemon that exists just to serve as Brock's ace. In fact, the thing that caused Golem to fall off in comp had little to do with Rhydon and everything to do with meta shifts. See, it was discovered that Body Slam couldn't paralyze Normal-types, so that meant that users of Normal-types like Chansey and Snorlax started to feel safer in leaving them in to tank hits. To accentuate this, they started running Reflect, which, in Gen 1, doubles defense. Golem's main niche over Rhydon was that it could blow up, which one-shots Chansey and does 65% minimum to Snorlax, allowing it to blast a hole in the opponent's team - but if they used Reflect, suddenly that drops off to doing about 50-60% to Chansey and about 30-40% to Snorlax. Add in the fact that Chansey is slightly faster than Golem, and it made blowing up on it a lot riskier.
Scott, I've been a viewer of your content for a pretty long time now. And I know this is gonna be a selfish response in a lot of ways, but please never drop the Venomoth running joke. Not only do I find it ridiculously charming since Koga's Venomoth still causes even some of the best Pokemon problems in these solo-challenges and thus I see as worthy of a running joke, but Venomoth is also one of my older brother's favorite Pokemon. Bug-type Pokemon are some of his absolute favorites, and Venomoth in particular is one he's attached to because of the potential he's always believed it had. When I tell him about your videos he always asks me "What type is Venomoth today" and it always makes him smile when he hears what absurd combination you give it that day. This joke never feels forced to us, especially since telling it only takes a second for you to do so it never wastes time. It also helps you dont always use it. We love you for you Scott, and that goes for the humble sense of humor you display as well.
Don’t sweat the venomoth, the joke has evolved over time. Can’t wait for you to repeatedly forget what type Drapion is when you start playing platinum. Great job on daily uploads man, very impressive.
The running venomoth joke is great actually and you don't have to be a Canadian about it, Scott ❤❤❤. Yeah you do it every video, but you never give it so much focus that it ever gets enough limelight to get sick of it, you don't even change your vocal delivery for it. The venomoth shows up - we get to see which bullshit typing combo it is today - and then you move on. Please never stop doing it ❤❤❤.
I saw the length of the video and I was like wow Rhydon is incredible I figured it would do better. But all it was was scott thanking everyone, that's dedication. Also I love the venomoth meme so no need to apologize for that.
I'd say the venomoth jokes are still good. I am still relatively new to your channel but have binged at least 100 videos since then of yours, and the first couple times I noticed the venomoth meme I immediately thought "oh this might be on purpose for something I don't know" and some videos later you mentioned it and I learned. I never thought you didn't know what you were talking about even as a new viewer, however I am 28 years old and not a gullible child so that is probably something else to consider, I dunno.
Tbh I like how you critique your gameplay as you get better between recording footage and recording audio. It's quite fun and cool to hear how you are continually improving!
Glad you like it! It's been interesting this December because I have had such a long time between playing the first attempts so my perspective has changed so much. Normally I don't get this kind of opportunity to reflect!
I really want to see a "what if series" for a few fantastic pokemon that dont start with a good move and get stuck behind Brock. Like "what if Starmie started with bubble"

Scott. I don't know what to say after these video, except: thank you! You are amazing and thank you becoming such an amazing runner and video editor. It was a real heart warming view to see you grow and become what you are now. Thank you so much and merry Christmas
The Venomoth joke is good! I think using it more sparingly might be a good call, like during second playthroughs if you think the video will bring in lots of new viewers.
Regarding Rhydon's weird elemental move access: the Normal-type theory seems plausible, as the Substitute/generic Pokemon design looks like it could be based on a Rhydon that wasn't yet a Rock-type. However, lately I've been thinking that the designers may have had a concept of monstrous-looking Pokemon being mystical. Lots of Pokemon like that (Rhydon, the Nidos, Marowak, Primeape, Gengar, Dragonite, etc.) have elemental moves that seem really out of place. Gengar might make sense to people, but its rival Alakazam doesn't have any. Machamp does, but not Alakazam, the poster-child of Gen 1 Special attackers. It seems like it may have been an intentional theme.
Your play has become quite remarkable Scott. You're playing at a much higher level now than you were just a few months ago. It's great to see your progress. Keep up the great work man.
I knew another playthrough of some sort was coming with this runtime. So glad I found this channel back when you were at like 12K subscribers. Can’t wait for the next video!
You had me with the talking thing at the end. You are a treasure and thank you for all your videos. I haven't missed a video of yours in literal years. ❤
I finally got around to watching this video. Very worth it. I love Golem and Rhydon a lot. I think Rhydon did really good considering it's almost a recipe for a Gen 1 disaster---the awful typing for enemy trainers (due to so many Water-type attacks, Psychic, etc.), the REALLY low Special and Speed, and lack of a boosting move, but damn, it did REALLY good.
Wow, surprised me in the end! Great playing. Glad to see a slow growth rate, slow, ground/rock type get a sub 50 time. Awesome! Great playing improvements in the 5 months as well!
IIRC, the Big Yellow video you plugged here itself had a plug for Plague Von Karma's video regarding Golem vs Rhydon. Plugception! (And all three y'all're great creators~)
SCOTT'S! HAHAHAHA! I Laught so loud when u talked "Who am i kidding?" Hahahaha! i really appreciate ur humor. Excellent playthrough as always, prudent and precise. Thx! And, i love the joke with Venomoth type.
I absolutely love the thumbnail! I'd love to see more like this. So much more personality than just a picture of the Pokemon. Also, tell the people complaining about your Venomoth jokes to can it. I look forward to those jokes in every video. And if people think you don't know what Venomoth really is, just direct them to your random type Venomoth video. That'll have them wondering what it is by the end. Hahahaha
I for one love the Venomoth joke. I think having inside jokes helps differentiate RUclipsrs, so I like to see the unique "flavors" from all of them. =)
Having Rydons stats on screen looks amazing! Not clingy at all! Let's have the more! Awesome video!😊😂 This is the best Christmas present. Thank you Scott!
I understand if you need to stop the venomoths joke for viewers but personally, I loved it. Great job Scott and thank you for the constant decwmber uploads
I honestly love the Venomoth bit, I look forward to seeing what typing it gets on each video. It's your Thing, just like MDB's fossil bit, it adds that extra unique touch.
I absolutely love the Venomoth joke. I spent years thinking it was psychic/poison and have slowly worked on correcting myself that it's definitely bug/flying.
Ah yes, literally the original Pokemon. My theory is that Rhydon might actually predate the type system in general, coming from a time when Pokemon were treated more like classic JRPG characters, so its moveset is less thematic and more a grab bag
If you look at the really early Pokemon in the index, you find a lot of Pokemon where it's hard to guess what their type would be. The Nidos, Clefairy, Kangaskhan, Voltorb - they all seem like something you'd get if you just wanted to design A Monster rather than An Elemental Animal.
My only criticism of the Venomoth typing joke is that it gets somewhat repetitive when it's primarily used as "oh man it has a type that's super effective to my soloist, oh no," if you did more to mix up the type, then I'd like it more. I do really like the joke, especially as someone who's seen every video of yours. Maybe there could be moments where you use the wrong type to explain a type interaction, like "it resists my Grass moves because of its Flying type" or "because it's part Ice type, my Fire move hits for super effective damage." It was nice to see the joke make a comeback in this video.
Golem is SOOO close to the S tier. Using Defense Curl against the Exeggutor wasted 12 seconds, meaning its time would've been only five seconds over. That plus removing those resets... I understand why you don't want to aim for a more perfect run, but my obsessive-compulsiveness demanded that I at least mention it. It's always been my go-to rock-type, so it pleases me to see it do so well regardless.
I fully understand wanting to build up to something epic at the end of the year. But I feel you maybe build in some lesser pokemon. It feels like we're only watching amazing pokemon for a month in yellow. Maybe some lesser pokemon would have been a cool intermission. Note that i mostly comment critique, but that's not how i feel. I comment so much because you're one of my favorite youtubers and I'm just really invested. I absolutely love this channel
I feel like your Venomoth joke is like MDB's Helix Fossil line, or JRose bringing up the Badge Boost Glitch. It's something I never really get tired of. Like saying hi to Denis in Crystal.
It not longer fights the normal types as well as rhydon does, which is oversimplying it but Plague von Karma has a video about it if you're genuinely curious about it.
@@skeetermania3202basically it became much more common to leave your normal type against another normal type because you are no longer afraid of a body slam paralysis, and this lead to a significant increase in reflect sets, and reflect greatly caps golem's explosion value
@@franslair2199 Rhydon also just hits harder and has better bulk overall due to better HP. You can probably bait something in and blow up on it with Golem on the switch but that's about all it does that Rhydon can't do.
@@ShiningJudgment666 if you just use him instead of rhydon that'll all he will ever be, a worse rhydon. However, people have been using golem for a long time and it's not because they're stupid
I think that it gets alot of moves from all types because it is one of the "Kaiju" Pokemon of gen 1. Like the Nidos who also get alot of beam based moves and surf. Big Monsters coming from the ocean and shooting energy-beams is just iconic.
Ah yeah the Kaiju mons. Tbh I wish Mothra... er, Venomoth got the same treatment. Venomoth with Ice Beam, Thunder or Flamethrower would be crazy for this Normal/Dragon type pokémon
Something about the delivery of the line “no, you don’t call it a bread sandwich” made this one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard Scott say

Wdymm i love the electric venemoth jokes! :) I genuinely like it, and I have watched prettttttymuch all of your videos in just a couple of weeks :)
Enjoyed this video. Love how we get special features if you stick around long enough. Post credits scene movie!
The way I screamed at the end! This video rocked, thank you!
I absolutely love the Venomoth joke, but I'm the subscriber that picked Grimmer because I love the original Grimmer video. Lol
This video scratched my brain in all the good ways. Lol You have absolutely crushed this year and month Scott!
In the end i really believed it wouldn't have been a versus video. But then, it was amazing.
Scott, thanks for making these videos. Really gives me something to look forward to after working all day. Love the videos
Wow, surprised me in the end! Great playing. Glad to see a slow growth rate, slow, ground/rock type get a sub 50 time. Awesome! Great playing improvements in the 5 months as well!
Today was the day I learned that Rhydon had an alternate form in gen 1. Amazing how we keep learning about a game that's 25 years old!
I cant stop watching your videos man. Always such a great and interesting way to explain and do things.
Your narration and vocabulary are getting much better. Good on you bro.
it's so cool to see how planning a playthrough well enough shaves so many time on each pokemon
IIRC, the Big Yellow video you plugged here itself had a plug for Plague Von Karma's video regarding Golem vs Rhydon. Plugception! (And all three y'all're great creators~)
Rhydon used butt kick. Super effective.
Love the video, love the art work, love your voice...thanks again for another Banger Scott!!!!
You're welcome!
You got me with the fake ending 😅. I love the venomoth meme too and even the clair meme back in the day!
I absolutely love the venomoth and dome fossil jokes, it's part of your brand my dude ❤
SCOTT'S!
Hahahaha
Pulled a sneaky on us.
Don't change Scott, you're great
I for one love the Venomoth joke. I think having inside jokes helps differentiate RUclipsrs, so I like to see the unique "flavors" from all of them. =)
Having Rydons stats on screen looks amazing! Not clingy at all!
Let's have the more!
Awesome video!😊😂
This is the best Christmas present. Thank you Scott!
Hypno sandwich is one of the sharpest observations I've seen in Pokémon playthroughs!
The fake-out popped me so good. I laughed so hard.
I understand if you need to stop the venomoths joke for viewers but personally, I loved it. Great job Scott and thank you for the constant decwmber uploads
Mannn your upload schedule is INSANE. Been binging all week and I can’t keep up
Good shout with the Big Yellow video he makes EXCELLENT content.
I’m 25 I’ve been watching your vids for years now, wondering why I love them so much, Summoning Salt vibes, I figured it out
I honestly love the Venomoth bit, I look forward to seeing what typing it gets on each video. It's your Thing, just like MDB's fossil bit, it adds that extra unique touch.
That thumbnail is fantastic!
I absolutely love the Venomoth joke. I spent years thinking it was psychic/poison and have slowly worked on correcting myself that it's definitely bug/flying.
That thumbnail is fuckin hilarious lol
We need more Pokemon drawn with a massive range of expressions like those
I love the mini golem pop-ups during the Rhydon runs. I had to go back to see if i was seeing them right.
I love the venomoth jokes! I always try to guess which you're gonna say ahead of time.
Also you completely got me with the fake out 😅😅😅
Im so glad i got to watch this as it premiered!
That cut from Bills house to the Rocket was fantastic
Rydon learning surf being weak to surf x4 is always insane to me lol 😂
It's a Godzilla-esque monster, so they wanted to give it the ability to travel through water, like they did later with Tyranitar and Aggron
It's in the name; Ride On, I am pretty sure its just a pun, haha.
Never stop venomothing.
The typing meme is great! I would miss it. Please use it still ocasionly 😢
Hopefully you're still working on finishing the video ;)
Yes I did
I absolutely love the not-knowing-Venomoth's-type gag. Makes me doubt my own knowledge 😂
You madman. You did both... In this utterly packed month.
I couldn't resist!
Great Scott! That was a wonderful video!
Ooo birds. I can’t wait to see you beat my articuno! Hope it wins
I feel like your Venomoth joke is like MDB's Helix Fossil line, or JRose bringing up the Badge Boost Glitch. It's something I never really get tired of. Like saying hi to Denis in Crystal.
No no, the Venomoth was definitely a Fairy/Steel type here.
Btw Golem has really fallen off in the gen 1 competetive scene when they discovered that body slam can't paralyze normal type pokemon
What did that discovery have to do with Golem’s drop-off?
