  • Based on the Neil Brand's critically acclaimed radio play of the same name, this 2006 BBC production follows Stan Laurel's last visit to his dying friend and comedy partner Oliver 'Babe' Hardy and Stan's subsequent coming to terms with the ghosts of his past. Jim Norton plays the elder Laurel, and Trevor Cooper portrays Oliver Hardy. The young Stan and Ollie are played by Nik Howden and Mike Goodenough.

I can see why this movie provokes so many negative comments. We (viewers) always want to believe the movie characters we love are as lovable in real life as they are on the screen. As much as I enjoyed Stan & Ollie because of the fabulous portrayals by Coogan and Reilly, I think this one rings truer.

I was under the impression that Stan was a beautiful, thought ful man....seems very flawed here..

Eric - Hang on to your impression. This is a dramatisation, basically one long joke, padded out with semi-factual material, conjecture and "licence".

très originale les divers mariages de Stan . l idée des panneaux tirés vien du film Qui dit mieux très originale mais ne sera jamai réexploitez car ce film de 1935 sera le dernier court métrage de laurel et hardy.

I don't believe that stan was this cold-hearted he loved ollie like a brother and yes he had a lot of splits with women but ppl change ppl grow apart that's life stan was a sweet person in my eyes. This movie made stan seem like a asshole and I don't believe he was. Also was this the whole movie only four parts seems so short.

I don't think Stan was 'cold' but he did the writing and planning of scenes, an actual 'comic genius'-taking nothing away from Oliver Hardy and his impeccable timing and acting. I can imagine the pressure did get a lot for Stan. There's an ancient UK comic called Barry Cryer, turned ninety (Still working!) who started out in the fifties in Vaudeville/Variety. He wrote a book called 'Pigs Can Fly!' which was basically memoirs and stories of his early days. In London, when a kid he talked to and reminisced with the older staff (backstage guys) and one told him of a 'star' that did great sight gags and a 'drunk' act. The man was talented but a pig to everyone. They all hated him. This guy had an understudy who could do all his act but got-on with everyone and everyone liked. One day the asshole went-off to America to be in the movies. His understudy stayed but eventually followed him to pursue his dream. The dick was Charlie Chaplin, his understudy-Stan Laurel. This is a drama, people don't really change. The new movie is good but a little sad-their swansong...

Stan & Ollie were very nice people from all accounts. This drama is pretty much speculative on their later years. One actor who worked with Stan & Ollie in one of their films from the '40s said of them: "Two beautiful men." 🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭 🎬📽️🎞️🎥🎦 😁😁😁😁😁

Nothing uglier than a disappointed woman. Bitter. If they felt so cheated or ignored why didn't they just move on?

    Couldn't they get realistic-looking headlines?

I wonder how much of this is true...did they really have the opposite personalities in real life from their film characters? They actor playing young Stanley looks like H.P.Lovecraft!

marie - Please remember this is a dramatisation, not a documentary. Such productions make heavy use of "licence".
