  • Based on the Neil Brand's critically acclaimed radio play of the same name, this 2006 BBC production follows Stan Laurel's last visit to his dying friend and comedy partner Oliver 'Babe' Hardy and Stan's subsequent coming to terms with the ghosts of his past. Jim Norton plays the elder Laurel, and Trevor Cooper portrays Oliver Hardy. The young Stan and Ollie are played by Nik Howden and Mike Goodenough.

    Poor Ollie. Stan who loved his best friend so much that for the years after Ollie's death and before his own Stan never stopped writing for the two of them as if his old friend was still there.
    I can't imagine the grief and pain he must have felt knowing he'd not get a laugh from Ollie for his latest works. And not being able to bring them into being like they had done for so long.
    10yrs Stan and Ollie spent apart.
    And Stan and Ollie are together again. Oh how we can only hope their on a big stage somewhere playing sold out shows and have fans rolling in the Isles.
    The world of comedy just isn't right now.
    We all miss you Stan and Ollie.
    Save a seat for me someday.

    Two giants of comedy. How far we have sunk since the times of L & H, Chaplin, Keaton.The world today would be a much better place if Stan and Ollie were around.

      The 20s through the 50s had so many comedy greats...these two, Abbott & Costello, The Three Stooges, and so many others. The next surge of comedy greats came in the late 70s-early 80s with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, the Belushi Brothers, etc. Each group had their own styles, and all will be remembered for what made them who they were.

      The world has progressed so far but it has learned nothing from the past and indeed is a more hostile and selfish place now and as you so rightly say, has morally sunk, probably too low for any chance of saving. I have just been watching a couple of Stan and Ollie's films and have been both laughing and crying. Our last, great "clown" Norman Wisdom marked the end of wonderful era of good, clean and funny comedy acting.

    Although I did not understand English, I nevertheless watched with the utmost attention the four parts of this biopic and I still regaled because the play of the actors there is amazing. . By turns comical, tender and moving I had a great time. The unfailing friendship of one for the other until his last day and I am certain that when babe went away stanley thought to lose a brother. . We have a couple of legends for all generations. . Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy for eternity. . A French fan. .

    Why are Stan and Ollie so loved? Unlike other comedy teams they lived separate lives and did not engage in petty arguments. There was also no battle of egos either. Ollie always acknowledged Stan's writing and had total respect for him.

And the actors playing them are so good.....it is uncanny how similar the actors are to the real Laurel and Hardy. I feel like I am looking at the actual guys. My hats off to the people who put this together. And you are right John Campolo, we have sunk so far since their time. And the world would be a better place if they were still around. Just got finished watching all 4 parts. As touching as this is, and as much people would like to think that Laurel was there for Hardy at the end of his life, I strongly believe this is fictitious. First, when Hardy died he was thin, almost wasting away which is why it's been speculated that he had terminal cancer. Second, Laurel couldn't attend Hardy's funeral because Laurel was too sick so I highly doubt that Laurel visited Hardy on his deathbed. In the words of Laurel in reference to missing the funeral, "Babe would understand". Their movies still make me laugh all these years later. They're timeless.

    This movie is a disgrace. The acting is terrible, the story is inaccurate, the costumes are sickening and the overall gushing sentimentality of the production makes me want to puke. Look at the state of so called Laurel there as he is supposed to be on the set of Atoll K! He looks like a punk rocker or a new romantic singer! By the time of that movie, he had grey, thinning hair and was visibly aged significantly. And for the record, when Laurel and Hardy were both in The Lucky Dog (1921), they left that movie set with absolutely no intentions of teaming up! That happened much later and not on the basis of Hal Roach's insistence. They should be ashamed. If you're going to make a movie about two of the most iconic comedy legends of the twentieth century and beyond, at least pay them the compliment of telling the truth about their lives and for fuck sake, get it right!

    Not a bad story but I have a feeling that many fans might take this as a truthful bio. It's sad to see Laurel depicted as such flawed character. One thing that puzzles me about Lucille, why does Stan appear hurt after she comes out on the porch? Surely the fact that Oliver her a secret wouldn't have made Stan react as he did. I don't know where Neil Brand did his research, but that must be the shittiest depiction of Stan Laurel I have EVER seen. I'm sure he was no angel, but this version is a selfish, self-obsessed monster, and Norton and Howden do zero to soften or otherwise much ameliorate the characterization.

    • @SMG706
      @SMG706 8 лет назад +1

      Steve Gilham I doubt that. He was kind of renowned for being accessible to fans and colleagues - his telephone number was listed in the Santa Monica directory, so reclusive and bitter don't really add up. And he's portrayed as just as big a prick in the flashbacks.

      I have a very good friend who was high up at Fox back in the day. He knew the boys well. Stan did become reclusive once Oliver became very ill but he was never as selfish as depicted here. He still answered most of his own fan mail and was most concerned with Oliver's condition. Yes, he was a bit free and easy with the ladies but that doesn't mean he was the narcissist as shown in this photoplay.
      At the height of their fame the boys were like brothers and they became inseparable. Compared to whatever foibles they had they were the most lovable and congenial of the Hollywood stars and you can see that love in many of their films. God bless them both...I hope they are keeping them laughing in heaven.

  • @braintree2
    @braintree2 10 лет назад +9

    This is historical garbage. By the time they teamed up Laurel had given up on acting and decided to work behind the camera. The resurrection of Laurel's performing career was an accident that occurred when an actor didn't show up for a shoot and Laurel filled in as part of a stock company called the Hal Roach All Stars that was put together in desperation by Roach after Harold Lloyd went independent. Over the release of the series's first few films, they were identified by Roach its two most popular actors. Any idea that Roach forced Laurel to team up with Hardy is utterly bogus. The drama is completely hoked up and Norton sounds far far less like Laurel did than Howden. Where the hey was the director on that? And nobody connected with this movie seems to have any idea on how to be funny. The team had retired from movies in 1945, even though 20th Century Fox had offered to keep its B movie unit going just for them, and their one attempt at a comeback, "Atoll K," was an unmitigated disaster. In view of that, any idea that they would have made "Laurel and Hardy in Space," had Hardy recovered is stupid and, even if they had, they would have been sued for plagiarism by Universal since the scene where they accidentally launched the ship is a direct rip off of "Abbott and Costello go to Mars." In short, an offensively incompetent piece of grueling and pretentious hackwork. Everyone at the BBC associated with this should be sacked and then executed right down to the extras and then anyone who truly loves comedy should go after their children, even the ones who were adopted and of the right color.
