    Laurel and Hardy are my absolute comedian heroes. When I feel stressed or nervous I watch their masterful movies. I currently have collection of 110 Laurel & Hardy movies, some of them are in color, they are precious to me and my comfort.

    I was at Stan's centenary at Ulverston in 1990 and at the evening bash I sat on the next table to Ollie's nephew who was the spitting image of him.

    What makes them so universally enduring? The innocence and love in their work. No malice, no grudges and the characters portrayed were very lovable and simple. No one has ever come near L&H for perfection as a double act. Priceless in every respect and way better than Chaplin.

    My childhood years spanned the 1980s, when English TV (then consisting of four channels) played a long season of their episodes and films. They've been my favourites ever since - I love their flawless shambles.

    Back in the late 60s The Electric Theatre, Portabella Road, London on a late Friday night the house packed solid with Hippies that I always think of now when I see the packed theatre in The Muppet's because that's what we looked like but under a cloud of sweet smelling smoke, walking in down the aisle with my friends to the whole audience whistling the Laurel & Hardy theme tune. Happy days.

      Jamie - this has always baffled me. They took Stan to Bishop Auckland (from Ulverston) when he was 5. When he was of grammar school age he lived in Scotland. How did he get into a grammar school aged 5?

    • @mrsbrownandhercat
      @mrsbrownandhercat 6 лет назад +3

      horace - yes, he was taken to Bishop Auckland (and christened there) but only for a matter of months after leaving Ulverston. If he was enrolled in a school it would have been a primary school, perhaps an annexe or department of King James. But even before he was 6 the family moved to 8 Dockwray Square, North Shields, where Stan lived until he was 15, although much of the interim time was spent away from home in boarding schools. The family then moved to Glasgow, where it is said that Stan attended the Stonelaw High School, which is odd, because the school-leaving age at the time was 14.

    Stan's idol was Dan Leno, not Robey. Leno was the previous generation, Stan and Robey were contemporaries.

    IN CASE ANYONE COMES BACK............;) "ARTHUR AND NORVELLE: THE FORGOTTEN AND REAL LEGEND OF LAUREL AND HARDY" - NOW OUT ON AMAZON! THE WHOLE - PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL - STORY IN JUST TWO BOOKS, WRITTEN IN AND FOR THE 21ST CENTURY!

    • @43painter
      @43painter 3 года назад +1

      I do believe these two books must be fabulous, but Amazon has been and ís treating its employees terribly in all sorts of ways. It therefor must be seen as a constant human rights violation. So its múch better if one would buy these two books somewhere èlse !
      Amazon is not a corporation to be recommended. Stan & Laurel would be offended if not shocked if they would know.
