  • Based on the Neil Brand's critically acclaimed radio play of the same name, this 2006 BBC production follows Stan Laurel's last visit to his dying friend and comedy partner Oliver 'Babe' Hardy and Stan's subsequent coming to terms with the ghosts of his past. Jim Norton plays the elder Laurel, and Trevor Cooper portrays Oliver Hardy. The young Stan and Ollie are played by Nik Howden and Mike Goodenough.

      @@dannysquirrel Hardy had lost so much weight towards the end of his life that he was unrecognisable. Having him so big here is a massive mistake. Laurel was blue eyed and Hardy brown eyed. John C Reilly and Steve Coogan swapped eye colours with lenses in the 'Stan and Ollie' film which is the kind of attention to detail I appreciate, especially when you know that Stan's eyes were considered too blue when he first appeared in films. Also, he would not have had his strange hybrid accent at the beginning of his career surely? I first heard this on the radio and it was much more enjoyable. No distractions with continuity errors!

    I'm here because of the new tilt at capturing Stan and Ollie, starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly. I've not seen or heard them yet, but given their overall abilities, it strikes me as excellent casting.
    The 'moment' I'm having here is the sudden realisation of the resemblance of Jim Norton to Stan. It's something I'd never have thought independently, but as soon as I saw his name in the description, I was gobsmacked.

    • @rustykilt
      @rustykilt 3 года назад

      The production of any movie dealing with the lives of Stan and Ollie leaves me nervous as the opportunity to misrepresent or dramatise the duo and portray them in an unfair light is too easy for the sake of sensationalism. When the movie, STAN AND OLLIE was released in 2019, I was dubious and prepared to be dismayed by a dramatic soap opera attempt to portray these two giants. Stan and Ollie were men like any other, with their faults and foibles, their ups and downs and the movie presents all of this but also the marvelous companionship, the magic of a partnership founded on mutual respect and ability. The pair engendered feelings comparable to love by those who watched their performances. Coogan and Reilly, through excellent writing and great sensitivity, capture the waning days of Stan and Ollie. I was afraid to watch the movie but came away with the thought that the movie does do them justice, and captures the essence of what made them great as friends and performers.

      Same as in my entire family history - the hefty people who lost a lot of weight also died shortly thereafter. The plump Great-Aunties all lived to be 88-98 years old. My namesake, who was never fat, lived to be the oldest Male in recent memory - 99 - so maybe I have a chance, if I lay off the beer and pizza ( Great Uncle Dan was a strict meat - potatoes - and Wild Turkey man)

      Leglamp - you are correct, this is the only flaw in this masterpiece. He was ordered to reduce after a heart attack in '54 and in "One Moment Please" he is seen as the thinner man. The devastating stroke came in Sep. '56, from which he died the following August. He never had cancer.
