- Ralph Edwards hosts this show where guests were surprised celebrities whose lives are told through people who know them. The two programs on this production are Stan Laurel / Oliver Hardy and Buster Keaton. Public domain.
Poor old Buster .... an entirely lovely man, and a superb comedian: brave, inventive: there was no one like him. And Laurel and Hardy - they just don't make 'em like that these days, and we'll never see their like again.
Thanks for posting. Really enjoyed all of it. Found great pleasure in understanding the uncomplicated loyalty of Laurel and Hardy and the straight humanity of Keaton.
The Buster Keaton segment extremely moving. He was really, really touched when Donald O'connor, Red Skelton, his 2 boys and his wife came out. You can see in his face the hard time he had with severe alcoholism and financial breakdowns. I'm glad they were able to do this for him. His tears were heart breaking but beautiful in his happiness.
I felt bad for Oliver Hardy when he was reminded of his brother's death. You could see it still hurt.
The greatest is the love that these two men had for one another. True gentlemen. God has given them their crown for sure.
These where the two best of the best comedians ever in our time . They fit so well . Thanks.
I love these guys, I hated how the interviewer kept making jokes about Ollie's weight though but Ollie - as a true gent let it slide but several times it seemed as though he felt a little hurt. These 2 were the best and are still way up there for me. RIP gentlemen, and thank you for the laughter xxx
Busters, Stan & Ollies genius will never be repeated, but their pretenders today could learn two lessons from these giants: humanity and humility. Busters appearance here though is quite sad: the cloying violins accompanying the Presenters relish in reminding him of those lean years is surreal and painful to watch, but as always that magnificent poker face gave nothing away. Throttling his sister was a gas; and nice to see his later years was blessed with such a lovely wife.
Thank you so much for this post, I remember back in 1965 watching my dad watch laurel and Hardy on the tv, I was so surprised to see my father ( always a straight faced surly person) just cracking up, I was 5 and have loved Laurel and Hardy ever since. Thank You
In the 1970s there was a Laurel & Hardy show every Sunday morning, on channel 5 from Saginaw, where the host would talk about the movie to be viewed and tell all about the dates and times of Stan & Oliver's lifes. I was in my teens and would watch this every Sunday morning with my dad and we would laugh SO hard that sometimes it would hurt. Dad has been gone for over 25 years now, but me & my brothers still reminisce about those Sunday mornings and recite some of our favourite lines from the movies when we get together. This post is wonderful and I thank the person for making this available.
Priceless they were ,We'll never see the likes of them again ever . Thanks for the laughs
I'm sitting here in bed with a trapped nerve in the base of my back/spine...this video put a smile on my face for the first time in days. Thankyou for uploading this great tribute to two of the pioneers of comedies - I used to go swimming every Friday night after school in the 70's and rush home for 6pm when they'd show double on BBC2...truly these two belong to all the ages :) Thankyou Stan & Ollie.
It always amazes me no matter when a movie is made the pain and hardship that comes with the production process. Every one is a trial to the stars and staff. Knowing this as we do makes their talent and what they gave the camera all the more amazing. Funny? Sure. Tragic? Beyond words. They did what they knew how to do. They gave every drop. Till they dropped. We love them so for it. More than memorable.
These guys are pure geniuses. They started it all.
Thanks stan and laurel legends in comedy amongst the very best God bless you both
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS.....OH BLESS THEM. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS UNIQUE VIDEO. MANY MANY STARS.
Oh god.. xD :3 This warmed the cockles of my heart
Just discovered this - a marvellous piece of history. I love watching these guys. My late grandpa was also a HUGE Keaton fan.
I heard that Stan Laurel didn't want to go on.He said,"I don't like surprises". Oliver Hardy talked him in to going on. The true great ones.
Its good to the see the 2 of these icons together candidly.
Thank you....that was wonderful!
Thank you so, so, so much for uploading these episodes of Laurel and Hardy and Buster Keaton. Mr. Keaton was awesome and a very emotional, humble person. He was a kind soul. And his wife Eleanor was awfully nice and truly seemed to have loved him.
Fantastic to see these and in their entirety. Great to see these greats off screen and a treat to see their genuine warmth and good natures. And hearing Keaton's voice is a rarity. Thanks for uploading.
Laurel Hardy ~ my favourites, along with Buster Keaton.
oh my god, this is ace!!!!!! i have always loved laurel and hardy and finding this.....gees...thank you very much dcmpnad.
True Pioneers and legends of entertainment, they deserce huge respect.
60 years ago! wow they are still timeless
That was so touching, love them! :)
LEGENDS ...
I am so glad to see that those two fantasitc guys was recorded in "This is your life" at that time and it is shared to us so we can watch it and take part of their excellence..
What a view to see these two genious recieve such much appreciation for there great performance over the year. They are truly genious, I love them.
loved watching all of them the laughter they gave us
You can see that this incredible artists aren't used to go on TV
I'm guessing this program was aired in 1954, since Vivien Blaine was
working on "Guys and Dolls" which was released in 1955. It was good
they got to honor L&H's lives when they did because both Stan and
Ollie had strokes over the next 2 years and Oliver passed in 1957. I
hope wherever they are they know how much they are still missed.
Wow- thank you so much for uploading this- I love those guys, especially Buster. What a treat to see that!
they were the best. they paved the way for so many comic groups. Martin and Lewis to name a few.
wow they sure looked uncomfortable doing this, and I cannot really blame them because that host isn't very good. However, it is great to see two giants of comedy together on such a rare film. The whole wide world loves these boys, and without doubt, always will. R.I.P boys.
Great upload, I really enjoyed that, thank you so much!
Beautiful video. You can see at 11:02 that Oliver was almost in tears thinking about his brother
Incredible. Thank you for uploading this precious footage of the comedic greats of our past. The most striking moment was how the host (Ralph Edwards) continues to rattle off events in Keaton's life, quickly and candidly going through the darker moments his career nadir, finanical problems, and divorce following up with a question, "Well, what happened to your acting roles?" (Something like that.) Keaton just says, "They stopped." Keaton looked like a deer in the headlights most of the time, managing to get through it. Fascinating.
In 1953, Laurel and Hardy appeared on a live BBC television broadcast of the show "Face the Music". Unfortunately, this show does not appear to have been preserved on kinescope, but notes from the show have been found. According to the notes, Ollie informs Stan that the television program has an audience of six million and that host Henry Hall is "going to introduce us to them". To which Stan replies "That's going to take a long time, isn't it?" I wish they could find THAT show! Please, BBC gang, look for it!
LOL! Please somebody find that show
Loved Ralf Edwards laugh lol
Buster Keaton, I know he had his problems with addictions but I just wanted to hug him.... Until his wife turned up he just looked sooo lost and extremely out of his comfort zone. But once his wife came out, you could see the relief in him
i love buster keaton . I think this wife of his was the best thing that happened to him...he was quite handsome as a young man. love his husky voice. Some time after this show he was given an award. He said' a bit too late '' I felt so sorry for him. I have the video. He wasnt at all impressed. I consider him a survivor afte all he went through...He was married to Hollywood royalty at the time , divorced, lost his two sons to her forceably and fought alcoholism, his career came to a halt..etc' But he is a hollywood giant . just watch his old movies. I have many of them on tape. lovely to watch. And such a humble, unassuming man.
Wow glad I found this, I have all their films on dvd, best duo ever on t.v. no one will ever beat them for laughs
i'm falling in love with Buster Keaton;)
I just love this..Thank You so much for posting..Love you whomever you are..
Wow, talk about an awesome upload. Thank you very very much, that was great! BTW, the Stan short that was a parody of the Valentino film with a bull is called Mud and Sand and it's posted multiple times on YT, that will be something for me to watch for sure!
Wow, I was confused, I thought Buster was going to be on the Laurel and Hardy episode, I didn't know they were two separate episodes, lol. Thats cool!
Stan Laurel/Oliver Hardy aired 1st Dec 1954 and Buster Keaton aired 3rd Apr 1957
Who wants to hit Ralph Edwards making the wisecrack when sitting L&H .."room for all three of you?"
Of all I watched on the net, this was the best thanks for these great posts, knocked me right out, Cheers
World beaters in there time, a great act, I liked them very much as kid in 60`s
Buster did smile. It was a sweet soft smile. But he always tried to stay in character on camera.
the true prophets , who brought laugh, happiness, joyful and many other good things to our lives, R.I.P Brothers, we never forget you
Ollie looks almost exactly like actor William Conrad from the great 70's TV show Cannon at this stage of his life.
Then for this. Bought back a lot of memories.
I have great memories of a Straw Hat Pizza place in the 70s/80s that I use to go to. They had a projector and would show L&H, and Little Rascals episodes all day.
Never seen this footage before, amazing!!!
Wow, the episode with Buster made me cry, a lot. Great guy, glad he came back in his life! I'm hooked on this show now, I'll have to search to see if they did one with Bogart or Flynn or other celebrities I am a fan of! Mae West? The Duke?
both stories,beautiful.
Just listening to the tricks buster got up to like the revolving fish bowl for tired fish made me laugh.
That host was such a prick he won't give them time to guess who the people are. I loved the one done years later by Michael aspell a proper presenter.
Thanks for a wonderful upload.
Wow thanks for the upload, great to see!
wonderful guys )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
How embarrassing. I really feel sorry for them. I love them.
Too sad; They were national treasures the likes of which will never come again.
They were perfect, could make one scene based on anything last for 40 min and be more hilarious than anything today
+Carole Linda Can you make that "international" please.
There is no doubt about it, Stan & Olley were the greatest comedy duo ever to come out of Holywood in that Golden era.
Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplain, BIG NAMES, but not as great as Stan & Olley
They were the greatest comedy duo to come out of anywhere in any era.
Brilliant
Horrible format, but what a legends they are
Even when I saw this as a kid (years after it was filmed) Edwards struck me as smarmy and hostile towards Ollie's size. Still feel that way. Maybe because Oliver Hardy has always been my very favorite comedian.
Laurel and Hardy were funny men
Ed
JUST PURE CLASS:)
Humanity. As I get older it is very valuable to see these lives-Did anyone ever think that Buster Keaton was anything but a total success? And rewarded for his life's work? Life just doesn't work that way-sometimes the best are not rewarded with riches in the material sense-but with those other ones-You know-the ones they say that really count. It's a good thing to remember when life gets you down.
This is great but Ralph Edwards is such a terrible host...
love these guys
Umm 6:28 Ulverstone isn't there, it's about 100 miles south of where they indicate.
now see im only 26 but thanks to my nana and family and so on' I love these guys to bits.
i was introduced to buster keaton by my mother a few years ago.. she mentioned buster keaton ..so i watched a fewmovie. Then my daughter studied about the great oldies and i got more interested. Now i love buster keaton. Not so much laurel and hardy..sorry:)
With the Buster Keaton part most of all it was like a scene out of L.A. Confidential. A testament to the film and a measure of an element of the unforgiving nature of media , 110% to the Love from Mrs. Keaton ;-)
Although I don't particularly admire the man nor the exploitative nature of this show, I must admit that Ralph Edwards and his production team had a lot of guts doing it live to broadcast.
I found this very difficult to watch. Great performers but they seemed almost embarrassed by this "tribute". Shame.
Both deserved a better host than this guy.
He seemed patronising and fake.
Also i didnt like him having a go at Oliver Hardies weight.
absolutely brilliant...wonderful to see..thanks for posting
It looks like this show must have been something like a nightmare for Stan, Ollie and Buster. For today`s sentiments it seems absurd to track people unwantedly before a mass audiance, gallop through what should be (or have been?) their lives almost without talking to them. The strikingly rough strangulation of Keatons sister says ist all.
ya des personnes intouchable laurel et hardy elvis presle charlie chaplin les Beatles john wayne et moi
It feels so rushed, like they wanted to get it over with as soon as possible... what a shame...
Can't believe Edwards brought up the deal with Oliver trying to save his brother from drowning but it didn't work. Wow..How rude and sad. Then they carry the rudeness through to Buster about the sad and private parts of his life. Terrible :(
Great stuff.
The man came from North Shields, near Newcastle upon Tyne, in the north east of England.
Davy
from North Shields, near Newcastle upon Tyne, in the north east of England.
Buster Keaton gave me the courage to do wild stunts (without a camera) from climb an 80 foot crane neck to jump building to building roofs...even, the first stunt, grab the back end of a bread truck and swing down the road to prove to friends that it could be done...Ha...true story of young Inkie the Clown
North Keels? North Shields.
A gem of a find but they're poor guests. Well done to Ralph for keeping it going
Yes, poor Buster Keaton. He looked modified! Very hard to watch!
what year was this
That Vivian Blaine is a fox.
year?
I Want to Talk about Texas :) QC
IRELAND DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THAT 6.31
So Oliver's brother died? I mean I'm the river... That's too bad. My pop pop liked these two. I was more Marx brothers or three stooges.
Buster looks like he is in real trouble throughout the programme. It's as if he doesn't know what's going on.
...with the deadly tobacco drug which killed them.
That Ralph Edwards was a bit of a wanker wasn't he??
lots of cringe moments..
