It's so interesting how Keaton's whole demeanor and energy change as soon as his wife comes out. Before that, he seemed overwhelmed and almost lost. Then suddenly, he's lively and joking.
A little bit of that came out when his sister came out and he fake strangled her!
I saw that too. I’m so happy that he and Eleanor found each other.
Buster was, off-screen, a bit shy, and didn’t like being presented in awkward situations such as this.
A giant, a genius, the one and only Buster Keaton!
Just an amazing man, his greatness truly shows in how humble his is here. Thank you for this treasure.
As Orson Welles noted, Keaton was the best of them all. So many great films and great moments . . .
I'm reading a biography on him right now, I think it's "Camera Man." Orson Wells says, What a beautiful face."
I used to watch Buster Keaton's movies when I was a kid (70's) Wow, RUclips is great, a goldmine for people who want to learn history, too bad most of the younger generation is totally ignorant about it
Im 18 and interested
Don't generalize young people, you'll be surprised how many us know these people.
@@patrickshore5859 what is that even supposed to mean otherwise the obvious? Oh wait it is just that, nevermind. I over thought it...
The younger generation relies ONLY on C.G.I's, and special effects. They DON'T KNOW what a GREAT storyline is.
Thank God for Eleanor coming into his life
Truly the best of all silent comedy stars. It was sad for Buster to be reminded of his lean years when he was artistically eviscerated by the movie moguls, leading to his drink problems.
he was such a genius! love him
I have never seen a more uncomfortable situation. Thank god Eleanor comes on to help her poor guy. I adore how she dotes on him throughout her piece knowing that he is just so not okay
I hardly understand what happened in the beginning 👁👁 what was going on!?
Thank you heavily father for giving us Mr. Keaton.
A great film maker and an awesome athlete!! Many film historians believe that 'The General' may be the greatest movie ever made.
People don't realize how talented Buster was. The top 5 versatile actors of all time
buster was a talented acrobat and onstage comedic actor from a very early age. Tutored by the very best actors, musicians and dancers of the time in vaudeville. He was deserving of everything he got in Hollywood until .......... well - Hollywood .
He was definitely amazing. Who else is in your top 5?
@tchrisou812 Sammy Davis Jr, Carol Burnett, Judy Garland and James Cagney.
@@cjrrun That is a hard list to differ with.
Shit there's people in our lives who just make you happy I'm to young to comment on this guy but watching this man gave me a warm glow
Buster Keaton is timeless, he’s for all ages.
Too modest and humble to say much of anything.
Skelton had to be a lifelong admirer of Keaton's -- as a master of pantomime and silent comedy himself, it must have been like sitting at the feet of a master to even be in his presence.
I believe Keaton did work for him in writing, staging, etc.
@@floramondecar9884 Wouldn't surprise me in the least -- I've seen a documentary on Keaton, and he was never shy about making suggestions (or even brazenly appropriating the director's role!) when he appeared in films in his later years.
A truly humble man who served his country in war. He’s the polar opposite of today’s Hollywood.
he was in ww1 at the very beginning of career before he became an icon. there are many people in hollywood today who have served in the military even during their fame
@@hahalol1452 Who? In a war? In harm’s way?
@@kd6836 Adam Driver, Rob Riggle, Zulay Henao, Sunny Anderson, Bea Alonzo, all korean celebrities are mandated to serve two years between ages 18 to 30. Buster Keaton was drafted into the army during the first world war, but it was july of 1918 and the war was pretty much over so he was lucky enough to not be in combat or "in harm's way"
Buster Keaton did not see combat during his service in World War I. His division, the 40th Infantry Division, was primarily used as a replacement unit, which means its soldiers were deployed to reinforce other units rather than being sent into battle as a complete division. Keaton himself served in a non-combat role, working in the military hospital in the town of La Rochelle, France. Either way, his service is appreciated and his work as a comedian is enjoyed :)
@@hahalol1452 That’s nice.
I was 3 years old at the time this was recorded. I remember him well as all the other comics of the old days. Its hard to believe I can't call my mom to watch these videos with me.
🙏🏻 I didn't know what to put as a care icon, like Facebook has. I'm sorry for your loss.
My hero buster keaton
I love you Buster Keaton ❤
Awe I’m getting tears in my eyes
This is an amazing connection with the past. We are losing this connection. A time when people had more respect for each other. Buster Keaton was one of the great entertainers. "This is Your Life' is a great example of entertainment showing us examples we can learn from.
haha! his sister is funny and looks like she have an amazing sense of humor too.
Sister...what sister?
@@yeshualionofjudah7107 obviously u were not paying attention and listen to the host when he announced his sister Louise and brother Harry from L.A.
@@taurusgirlxoxo4541 yes, you are right
A great man !
Proof that true love can transform your life. We should all so lucky. I am so happy that Eleanor saved him.
Anyone see the guy CRAWL ACROSS THE FLOOR behind Ralph Edwards at 0:35?
Keaton was a comedic genius! A true innovator aling with Lloyd and Chaplin.
Red Skelton showed the greatest admiration for Buster. One comedian to another.
A very humble man.
if not already noted, he came up with or staged the Stateroom scene in the Marx Brothers "A Night at the Opera"
The part where they talked about how his marriage fell apart and he lost everything... this is awful. They ambush the guest and then make them relive hard times in front of a television audience? What?!
They did dwell on the hard times quite a bit, I’m assuming it just proved his resilience and talent that he came back from it. It would feel horribly awkward to be the host having to bring it up, i hated having to see Buster lower his head at the mention of it. Everything else was beautiful though.
The show is "This Is Your Life" for a reason. It's not called "This Is the Good Parts of Your Life". The bad things that happened to him are part of HIS LIFE. They are right to mention them. Sugar-coating things is fake. They showed how he faced them and overcame them.
Buster was a genius even in bridge game
In Sunset Boulevard
@@besserman1 Short scene but he grabbed it!

Holy cow! What history!
He had a lot of hearing loss, which is probably why he's watching the host so carefully--so he doesn't miss anything.
.. my father named our farm dog BUSTER in the late 50's early 60's
.. Dad would not to me how he came up with the name BUSTER .. now I know
Buster ķeaton genie de l age d or de la comedie adorait laurel et hardy il disait qu ils etaient les plus droles j admire ces geants et leurs humilite de buster de stan et ollie
Buster era um genio da comedia.
6:05 Buster Keaton making a small smile
Strange to hear buster keaton with voice 🙂
He was in the Twilight Zone episode where he goes forward in time.
Poor Buster, he looks so uncomfortable
Syrka Ros Anyone would be to start off with if they were caught offguard like that.
He could only hear out of one ear/hard of hearing but tried to hide it. So he was probably trying to keep up
Too overwhelmed, not uncomfortable imo
He lit up when Eleanor was introduced to the show.
@@kittykittymeowmeow19 You can see that when his wife comes in, his behavior changes. It's interesting. It feels like those intervention situations or surprise meeting and you unexpectedly find someone to lean on. He's a tragic figure, had serious drinking issues and he's lost confidence in a romantic relationship (his previous wife was cruel as far as she could be). I don't know the extent of that love in the relationship between Buster and Eleanor, but she probably restored his faith in many ways. A man who was at his worst and thought he had lost everything. He looked a little tired, trying to follow the script.
Oddly enough, our legendary & beloved Buster Keaton did not seem that enthralled with the great Donald Crisp...
I think that’s his gag…I’m sure he is a sphinx under all the armor.. one of the greats
As it turne out, that biograpnhical movie wasn't very good; Keaton himself disliked it immensely. I'm sure he admired O'Connor as an actor, but the film itself was factually inaccurate and Keaton resented it.
everything was so natural and true! people were alive! today everything is fake and worthless....
Very true. Natural being is fast taking a back seat to the artificial celebrity culture, want and greed. Technology is a double-edged sword. All said though, the internet brings these gems of history to anyone who wants to find them.
There was always artificially, we just tend to focus it on our times because it's easier to spot it than looking back on old photos and researching documents, and who knows what else.
Completely untrue and astoundingly pretentious
you can tell by his face that he hated being on that show
As many do, because the host is such a tactless misinformed jerk!
Most people hated being on show because they ambushed them
Up close her looks like any old men, but from further out, his profile is unmistakable!
When you think about the big 3 silent comedy legends chaplin, keaton and lloyd keaton was the funniest
Keaton is / was FAR better than Chaplin
One of the very times Buster smiled in public.
oh okay this is epic
Red Skelton and Donald O'Connor were simply great. There's just something about Ralph Edwards that I don't like. Maybe it's that he comes across as so phony. Buster Keaton was simply the greatest of his time.
His first marriage was a disaster. It took two more tries to find the right person.
His last job was for a Rye Bread,Levy"s.
No kidding? What was his job with levy's?
He died February 1st the following year ... I hope he got paid for this ...
i believe he passed 9 years later
Yes, get your facts straight! He passed away in 1966 and this was in 1957. Between those times he worked on over 30 movies and TV shows. Including many classics. During those times, the World caught up to his genius, and he was fêted at numerous film festivals award shows and testimonials. Director Richard Lester, who put him in his last film, “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum” let him improvise and even direct his scenes, and not only was overwhelmed by his genius, but says he was delighted to see Keaton in his element, and saw him actually smile more than once! A wonderful last hurrah. Keaton said in his last interview that one of the great moments in his life, was a recent meeting with Charlie Chaplin who he had costarred in “Limelight” and saying that Chaplin told him that he was indeed the greatest comedian and filmmaker in history and that Chaplin felt that he “sat at the feet of genius“
@@tomgreene2978 I think he was in at least one of those 60's beach movies also
yes, of course, that was a resurgence of his career to a new generation. Legendary William Asher, who directed the original American-lnternational beach party movies, “Beach Blanket, Bingo“ and “How to Stuff A Wild Bikini” two of the great classics of that genre hired his old, good friend Buster, and told him to just write and direct, whatever gags he wanted in the scenes he was in. They were so good and so much better than everything else in the movies, that he kept adding more scenes for him!. That catapulted him into the very lucrative world of many of the great classic comedians in TV series guest spots and commercials. I didn’t mention these in my comment, because the good news was he did continue to be involved in some quite illustrious and classic projects!
He looks a bit like Al Pacino.
looks nothing like Al Pacino

18:35 I couldn’t have said it better myself 🥹 THANK YOU for sharing this, such a beautiful tribute. So touching to see him both smile and brought to tears with the very first guest.
He looks a bit like Al Pacino.
That half-sweet, half-poignant look.
As if he had seen a lot in life and had many falls along the way. Pacino also has this way of expressing himself. For both comedy and drama, and I imagine Buster himself in a drama, alluding to his already troubled personal life.
