I cannot believe my primary care doctor told me there was nothing I could do for trigger finger except maybe a shot for pain when the pain got too severe! I thought there just must be something that can be done, so I began researching and even found that if you do nothing, you could end up with your finger freezing in that position permanently! I was going to look into going to occupational therapy, but now I can sit at home, or anywhere for that matter, and do the exercises myself without the expense and travel of going to therapy! Thank you!

I invented my own massage technique for this. Sit the tennis ball down on the table in front of you. Then put the affected hand, palm down, on top of the ball. Then put the other hand on top of the first hand as a weight to push down. Then roll the affected hand around on the ball as you find the tender knots causing the trigger finger, and massage them out. It's basically applying the tennis ball plantar fasciaitis technique to your hand instead of your foot.

My Dad suffered from a terrible trigger finger thumb. Years ago his doctor gave him a shot which helped but the pain recently came back again. I showed him this video and he began doing a few of the exercises you recommended (the rubber band one, the tennis ball and the last tip you gave - which he liked the most) Anyway, it’s been about 3 weeks and his painful trigger finger is cured! He keeps raving about how you helped him so I just wanted to come and tell you!! 🤗

    Hello Dr. Mandell
This very video of yours is about 4 years old..
I've had the discussed trigger finger problem in my left hand's middle finger since 2 years now.. I just watched your video and tried your exercises..
I made an "O" by squeezing my middle finger with my thumb like "👌" this.. believe me it did the job done in no time.. now my problematic finger is 99.5% freed from locking/jamming like it was locking/jamming before..
    This is miracle..😇❤️
    Thank you Dr. Mandell 🙏

I just wanted to say Thank you. I had Cortizone shot in surgery. Now it’s my pinky finger and I said I was gonna go on RUclips to find out more about the trigger finger. And you popped up and I absolutely think God. I did not want to get another surgery or get another Cortizone shot to raise up my blood sugar, but doing these exercises and wisdom and knowledge that you put on the video. I feel 80% healed. I will continue to do the exercise until this goes away. I was using the rubber band, the strength my muscles and I was working my fingers. No more surgery for me.
    Thanks Sooo Much.

Today I learnt the exercises Brother. Thank you so much for sharing these precious informations. It's so useful. I fell and hurt my palm upside down in March 3rd 2022. The skin came hanging. The first thing I did was remember Jesus and pray. The skin went back to its place. For nearly 3 days I had no pain cause I was in constant pray and sent my pray request to many pastors I could. One night as I remembered the word " believe and faith " and some sentence on it..... the pain ticked. And the second plaster nearly made my hand sore couldn't lift it. It's nearly 10months now. I pray that your exercises will heal me and do pray for me brother.

Been there, done that. This works for me; when "unlocking" a trigger finger, just straighten the first digit. Pinch the fingernail and fingerpad and lightly straighten it. Much less painful. Daily feel for the knot just below the root of the finger. Flex and straighten the finger, you will feel the knot moving in unison with the finger movement. When you find the knot encourage the fibroblasts to reduce the size of the knot by pressing on and massaging the knot enough to be a little painful. Afterwards apply some OTC diclofenac cream to relieve the inflammation. Works for me! Good video Doctor.

Thank you so much- I am 40, live in the UK and have had trigger finger for a few months. It recently spread to 3 other fingers too. I have just tried your exercises and they certainly help in the short term- I am so happy as the thought of locked- up hands was really starting to depress me! I'll keep doing the exercises and hope that they give me a long-term benefit too. FYI, the exercise where you oppose the trigger finger to the thumb and then push seems to give me an almost immediate effect. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom- I am extremely grateful.

Sounds like it is very bad. I had the 4 minute surgery outpatient. I had it severely like you. Even my doctor couldn't get my stuck finger to bend before surgery without a shot. However, I have it again on another finger, so I'm trying this.

I’m a 78 year old woman with Dupuytren’s. I fell and broke the fall by placing that hand on the tile floor, about 5 years ago. That palm looks different than the other one. It looks as if there is minor structural damage. I have no pain or discomfort; it's only extremely annoying - my ring finger locked up about a year or so ago. I've been subscribbed to your helpful videos many years. I didn't think to search RUclips until today. I'm glad I did because you always use common sense and logic to contruct a solution. I have a feeling that by following your advice I can break down the scar tissue that's in my mid palm area. I will do all the exercises, and I have a rounded edge metal device that I can use to reshape the scar tissue. I'm guessing it will require a month if I'm consistent. 🤩 Many thanks Dr. Mandell. 😍

Thank you for explaining trigger finger and posting the illustrations, those are very helpful. My doctor had me get xrays of both of my hands and told me I had arthritis. I told him I had trigger finger on 2 fingers and showed him my issue. He did give me a shot ofa steroid and told me to come back in 3 months for another shot. He didn't tell me to do any exercises. I have performed all of the exercises you recommended and will continue until my trigger finger(s) get better. Great explanation in laymen terms, very helpful information. I was going to call the hand surgeon today and I am glad I saw your video. Have a great day, I know I will!

I've been a medical massage therapist for 30+ years and am now beginning to develop trigger finger. Suffice it to say, it is quite painful. I find these exercises to be very helpful and now I am hopeful that I can continue doing what I love. I realize there is probably some arthritis involved as well but if I can keep most of the fascia a bit softer and fingers more flexible, I will be massaging a few years more! Thanks again!

Dear Dr. Mandell! I have been doing these exercises throughout your video. I had a rubber band, a rubber ball, and used plastic handled scissors in place of your miofascial releaser. My right index trigger finger is already relieved and working as I type. I will keep this up. I subscribed, and I am glad I found your excellent instruction. Thanks.

@@N.E.U.R.O It did eventually go away on its own (took about 6 months). Shortly after, I developed cubital tunnel (basically, it's carpal tunnel that stems from the elbow, rather than the wrist and is also caused by years of typing with my elbows resting on the table edge). I believe both events are related. Trigger finger was the warning sign and cubital tunnel (in both arms) is the end result. It's a real bummer and makes my work and routine life difficult (gripping things, writing, no feeling in pinky and ring finger on either hand, and constant finger cramping). Anyone experiencing trigger finger should seek treatment in case it may lead to something worse down the road that treatment could perhaps thwart.

@@N.E.U.R.O Oh no! A musician/artist... I feel for you... and so young. I don't know what your insurance situation is, so I won't assume, but when you can, get treatment as soon as you can. There are simple surgeries for these issues (and non-surgical treatments as well) and if they perform them in time, the damage won't be permanent. I suppose our love and dedication for our art forms shows in the wear n' tear in our bodies. Take care of yourself. God bless and wishing you all the best for the future.

I want to thank you so much, Dr. Mandell. Your exercises and use of a myofascial release tool work!! I had severe trigger finger for two years and had tried steroid shots from two hand specialists and was scheduled for surgery by the second doctor after my second shot worked for only six months. Two weeks before the surgery date, I saw your video and immediately started the exercises and bought the release tool. I had an appointment two days before surgery with the doctor and told him that, by using your suggested techniques, I was already 80% better and would like to postpone the surgery, pending further results. He fully agreed and said that even if I do not improve further, the surgery-while simple-should never be done if an 80% improvement can be achieved without surgery. Within a few more weeks, I was 100% improved. That was over a year ago. Now the symptoms are returning (much more mild than before), and I am resuming your exercises and release tool use. I am 80 years old (but very active and not retired) and have seen hundreds and used dozens of fitness and health related videos and programs before. This trigger finger release video is the single best one of them all.
I have one travel suggestion: your myofascial release tool (which I also have) looks fearsome in a TSA X-ray at the airport. When I pack it in checked luggage, the bag gets searched and my bag misses the flight and arrives on the next one. Plus, I would not like to try to pack one of these in carry-on luggage and get into a discussion with TSA (and potential tool confiscation) when they see it during the screening process. So I bought a much smaller release tool (without the holes in it or the funny shape) and have never had a problem with TSA over it. I use it only for travel, because I like the one you show in your video the best.
