I've had a rough journey with my hands. I had trigger finger surgery and, you're right, it can come right back even if actively going to physical therapy for heat, massage, scar tissue take-down, etc. I do highly recommend overnight splinting. For me, that puts my fingers to rest in a more meaningful way. The inflammation and swelling that tends to occur during the day will go down overnight with adequate rest. It doesn't cure the problem, but it makes my daytime hours far better. I start the morning with no issues and by bedtime I'm starting to feel the problem. I just feel like splinting calms it enough so that it doesn't advance to worse issues. I have a little finger impacted by wrist surgery and then trigger finger surgery on my ring finger, and that little finger now is in a permanent bend that even the therapist could not resolve. I do the "praying hands" maneuver to keep the tendons stretched and the problems from worsening. I start with hands together overhead and slowing bring them down to my chest in a praying hands position. It's the easiest way for me to give my fingers a good stretch. Its also easier for me to hold that stretch position for a couple of minutes.

I did my research and found out that taking vitamin coenzyme vitamin B6, P-5-P (Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate) 50mg - 3 times a day along with Chelated Magnesium (as magnesium glycinate) for absorption, cured my trigger thumb! From my research they said you have to take this for the minimum of 6 months to start working. Well, 6 month and 2 weeks later my trigger thumb totally cleared up, seems like overnight! I'm cured, and just last month my hand doctor said he thought I should have the surgery to fix my trigger thumb! My trigger thumb was really bad, had to splint my thumb 24 - 7. Anyways, this worked for me, even though my doctor didn't believe me!

I've had a snapping ring finger in my right hand for most of my adult life. I've done hand massages and stretching, but found using a massage gun on my palm the most effective. My ring finger is no longer catching and the palm of my hand no longer constantly hurts.. I started with using the massage gun morning and night and once the tendons loosened up I eased off to once a day to using it once or twice weekly. It feels wonderful to have a totally relaxed hand after so many years of tension and pain in my palm.
@@arifkuyucu MY massage gun doesn't have a brand name on it. I got it a few years ago for about $60 from Walmart. It came with 4 different head attachments; a round ball (the one I use on my hand), a single pronged head, a two pronged head, and a flat head. It has several vibrating (pounding) speeds. I normally use the slowest and next speed up.
@@boltnut55 I don't have a set amount of time I use it daily. Sometimes I'll do two long sessions a day until the massage gun shuts itself off. I target the entire length of my ring finger going up and down the stretched out finger. I also hit the area just below where the ring finger attaches to the hand. The tightness of tendon at that point forms a indention or valley in the palm. I concentrate on the finger and palm of the hand and don't try using it on the back of the hand across the knuckles. That hurts.
Thank you, Sir, I have had this middle finger problem for 5 years now, but this year very bad and painful. So I start your 3 steps now during this holiday I am home not work will be see. Thanks. from Canada, Ontario.

Hi Camille, 4 weeks ago I had a surgery on my right anular finger and I can’t bend my finger yet, last year I had surgery on my left thumb and it’s well now , How long does it take for your fingers to recover? Thank you 🤍
Ditto .. had it in my right hand 5 years ago, worked fine. Going for my left hand in a couple of months. Other than the surgery, everything else is either temporary or ineffective.
I wanted to thank you for the FREE advice. Just had my first injection. I have it in both hands. Going to see in the injection help (but also your stretching techniques you provided)
I have had trigger thumb for the last week and I'm looking forward to trying these - will send an update in another week! thanks for these suggestion Doctor.
Sometimes the reason for the buildup of the scar tissue is due to a uric acid. Uric acid buildup can be caused by certain prescription drugs, like clopidogrel (Plavix), which has a similar impact on the joints to gout. To eliminate the buildup of uric acid, some supplements can be taken, like malic acid, or tart cherry juice.
Got my hand on a hot rice pack right now. I use a bandaid for a splint 24/7. Comfortable and I can do everything except make a fist, so no pain or snapping. Going to try that two min stretch. The cortisone shot did nothing for me 6mos ago. I am going to use the handles of my scissors to work the scar tissue. Thanks for everything
You don’t need to run out to buy a splint . Just wrap a piece of white medical adhesive tape around the middle joint , not too tight . That will keep your finger from flexing . A bandaid works as well .
@richardlane279 I made splints cutting a tongue depressor into 3 pieces and sanding the edges, used bandaids to secure ... because tape or bandaid alone didn't work well. I too eliminated the condition by keto diet. Also took p5p (vitamin b supplement)
Hey Doctor Story, im a 54 yr old man fairly healthy and i had this trigger finger. After researching this and being told nothing's i could do, i did the natural thing of evaluating my diet.. took 1 thing away . Sugared soft drinks. ( Cokes, Dr Pepper, Big Red) and with in a week ,i noticed my finger was not locking up as much 2-3 times a day vs 7-8. I continued w/o soda drinks and after a month maybe 5 weeks, troubles in that finger went away. I was drinking one 44 oz a day sometimes 2 for about a year straight.. that why i started with taking it away from my intake.
Sugary drinks are my downfall. I keep telling myself to do this. I'll give it a try for the next month and see; figure it's due to inflammation, and sugar inflames. Thanks for the reminder!
@@jes0lis I wish it worked for me. I've been on a low carb diet for years. I had a flare up of sjogrens and the trigger finger is back like last time. I only get it at night. I suspect that's when cortisol is low. An injection worked last time.
I am going to try, because I have a terrible problem with my fingers with multiple locking/popping and it causes GREAT pain. I am looking into surgery as I have the problem for several years. I have had the cortisone shots a few times - feels fine for a few months, but always comes back. I think I will get the release surgery.
Just tried the graston technique in my kitchen with coconut oil and cutlery and it is amazing. CLICKING IN MY RING FINGER IS GONE AFTER 5 MINS MASSAGING!!! Finger was clicking for weeks.
I have trigger finger pain in my palm on my pinky finger, so far the stretching and heat seem to be working. I golf and practice my swing as much as I can, so it seems to have caught up to me over the last four years. Edit, after a few days of stretching, heat and wearing a splint at night, my trigger pain mostly went away. I also just used a piece of smooth plastic to break up the scar tissue. Thanks for the video.
I've been splinting since a few days after my middle finger started triggering, but that 2 minute stretch did wonders for smoothing things out. I've also been using heat and massage to help, but that stretch is really helpful. How long would you recommend performing these stretches? Until the symptoms ease for multiple days in a row or just...indefinitely? 😅
Thanks for the tips Doc! I cellotaped a flat ice-cream stick to my ring fingers for a few nights and each morning afterwards, both fingers felt great after just a few minutes of exercising them. Then I ordered splints similar to the Vive one, slept with them last night, and BOOF! my fingers were stiff, bent and sore again this morning. I'm going back to my simple ice-cream sticks! 🤭🤣🤣BUT I'll definitely massage where you indicated, with my flat Jade Gua Sha tool, as well as spend 2 (TWO) minutes stretching exactly how you demonstrated. YIPPY! 🙏👌🤗 South Africa 🌞🌍🦓
Great post! when you say 'too long', do you define that in time or experience? What I mean by this is I've dealt with this for years in both hands assuming it was just my service career [Airframe repair tech]; pneumatic rivet guns and metal bucking bars play havoc on hands. While they haven't permanently locked, I do have to release them using the opposite hand.
I got it in both thumbs. Started with a small pain around the pulleys for a couple of weeks. Then the locking bent overnight. Got splits. I find eating a decent beef steak makes it a lot worse. So I’ve cut that down. And gone vegetarian in the evenings. And waking up felling better.
Hi doc thanks for the video! I wanted to know, if i continuously reset my finger during the day is the act of resetting it bad to build up scar tissue or would that naturally stretch the tendons?

I had two fingers on my right hand that were trigger fingers. Had to straighten them manually. It really hurt to straighten them. Started taking serrapeptase and after about 3 months no more trigger fingers. Serrapeptase breaks down scar tissue. Really works.
I know you said it was gone after 3 months, but how long before you saw a difference where it looked like it might be working? Like was it gradual or did it suddenly go away? And how long did you take it for? Thanks.
I decided to give this a try because what else do i have to do since getting an appointment with a GP is such a metric pain in the ass, it burned like high hell, but after the 2 minutes, it did give me quite a bit of relief, i'll likely reply to myself here tomorrow to say if the relief continued
I wonder whether there's any connection in the development of trigger finger and a decades ago habit of cracking the knuckles. I ask because i'm 69 now and moons ago i used to crack my knuckles periodically.
I just had trigger finger release surgery for the clicking issue I had with my pinky finger. I play guitar, and it is my fretting hand that is the issue. What do you recommend post-surgery to have a full recovery with full range of motion for my pinky?
Can trigger finger be inherited? Once in a while my middle finger on right hand just kinda locks up and it hurts to straighten it. my mom had trigger finger and got surgery for it (which failed. she has yet to go back and get it addressed). I had asked her doctor if it can be inherited and he didnt think so? yet I seem to be getting same problem as her. we are of scottish decent so I wondered if it could actually be dupuytrens, which is inherited (often in scottish families), but he ruled it out for my mom.
for me it seem to developed recently. its in both hands but only bad in the morning. after about an hour it is back to good till the next morning. will try the suggestions
Hey....don't delay starting dealing with it. Bcoz I ignored the morning stiffness for about a month and look what I got My thumb is like iron tough. It has lost its bend on the first knuckle. If bends accidentally, I yell 😢 No massage, exercise, stretching, hot cold bath, vitamins, splints have worked so far 😢 Run....and see some Dr before it's too late
I was really fortunate. I had it severe in my ring finger on my left hand. A single injection of cortisone and it was fixed. 10 years and never returned.
What kind of exercise can I do for just the thumb knuckle that is the only part that hurts I exercise it on a daily basis I'm pulling like your video shows I do wear a brace on it but it's just the knuckle that hurts

Anyways, this worked for me, even though my doctor didn't believe me!
I'm an insulin dependent diabetic for 28 years .l've pained on my right middle finger for 10 months.
Ortho dr.told to me it is trigger finger and l had met physiotherapist also.l'm doing exercise for it according to his suggestion .l'm not completely heel from it.
Could you please advise for it.Thank you.
I have used this too for three different fingers and it worked each time. Sure beats the surgery route👍😊
Thank you for the wonderful advice Dr, just a question on the stretch how often in a day does this need to get done? Many Thanks
The greatest advice for trigger finger problems. Thank you!
Dude would you like to share a link about your massage gun please? any special name or brand?
@@arifkuyucu MY massage gun doesn't have a brand name on it. I got it a few years ago for about $60 from Walmart. It came with 4 different head attachments; a round ball (the one I use on my hand), a single pronged head, a two pronged head, and a flat head. It has several vibrating (pounding) speeds. I normally use the slowest and next speed up.
Thank you.
@@dulcilass thanks. I'll try this as well. How long do you use the gun for each time? And are you targeting the nodule or all around the hand?
How is it going now??
Thanks for the video. Been struggling for some time. Will try the two min stretch daily. Hope this helps.
I had 2 finger surgeries on my right hand and 2 fingers on my left hand...with great success.
I weight train and the gripping weight did it...but after th surgery...5 years now...no problems...😊
Dr. Story, I appreciate the video and your advice. Is there any action we can take to proactively prevent it?
I wanted to thank you for the FREE advice. Just had my first injection. I have it in both hands. Going to see in the injection help (but also your stretching techniques you provided)
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much…I just put down to RA…now I understand…the “click” when straightening scared me. I’ll talk to doc..thank you..pv

Ugh...sorry.
Did it help ??? And do they know why people get trigger finger ??
@@Jupiterascend9 surgery did help! In most cases it can be caused by inflammation in the tendons of the joint of the fingers.

That's great!
I have had trigger thumb for the last week and I'm looking forward to trying these - will send an update in another week! thanks for these suggestion Doctor.
Best of luck!
I'm going on a month for trigger thumb. Thought I just bruised it working.
Are you able to make a fist now?
Thanks Dr. Adam for ur advices really that will help the patients....
My osteopath in Au recommended using the massage gun as well as the stretching exercises. Thanks.
I was drinking one 44 oz a day sometimes 2 for about a year straight.. that why i started with taking it away from my intake.
fascinating
Sugary drinks are my downfall. I keep telling myself to do this. I'll give it a try for the next month and see; figure it's due to inflammation, and sugar inflames. Thanks for the reminder!
@@jes0lis I wish it worked for me. I've been on a low carb diet for years. I had a flare up of sjogrens and the trigger finger is back like last time. I only get it at night. I suspect that's when cortisol is low. An injection worked last time.
Excellent information which helped me deal with my trigger finger problem.
Glad it helped
Thank you!🌿 Very kind to offer help like this.
You are so welcome!
Good thing i noticed it early. I'll definitely do the exercise everyday.
Adam where can I get a Sprint from??
I am going to try, because I have a terrible problem with my fingers with multiple locking/popping and it causes GREAT pain. I am looking into surgery as I have the problem for several years. I have had the cortisone shots a few times - feels fine for a few months, but always comes back. I think I will get the release surgery.
❤hi Dr. From Philippines I'm watching your demo.im
Really appreciate.
Thanks for watching!
I've been dealing with trigger finger for about 3 months. It's slowly getting better, but it's a long recovery.
Me too. What are you doing for it. I don't want to get any shots.

How can I speak to you
I have trigger finger pain in my palm on my pinky finger, so far the stretching and heat seem to be working.
Thanks for sharing
@@AdamJStoryDC the spoon method has also helped my foot!
YIPPY! 🙏👌🤗

@@AdamJStoryDC thank you sir🙏
It was rheumatoid arthritis and I've had multiple replacement a lot of surgeries over 20 or so
Great post! when you say 'too long', do you define that in time or experience? What I mean by this is I've dealt with this for years in both hands assuming it was just my service career [Airframe repair tech]; pneumatic rivet guns and metal bucking bars play havoc on hands. While they haven't permanently locked, I do have to release them using the opposite hand.
too long - years
Sir. I had that, I had surgery on both hands for trigger fingers. And both hands are still not Right. Hope this will be helpful for me. Ty
Thank you very much Story, DC ❤❤❤

I got it in both thumbs. Started with a small pain around the pulleys for a couple of weeks. Then the locking bent overnight. Got splits. I find eating a decent beef steak makes it a lot worse. So I’ve cut that down. And gone vegetarian in the evenings. And waking up felling better.
Hi doc thanks for the video! I wanted to know, if i continuously reset my finger during the day is the act of resetting it bad to build up scar tissue or would that naturally stretch the tendons?
Hello how r u feeling

Thank you I recently noticed my middle finger sticking and it would snap and unlock when I would extend my finger. Google search said it was trigger finger so a RUclips search brought me to this video. I really appreciate you taking the time to put this information out there. I ordered the splint and have started doing the stretching exercises.
How many times throughout the day should I do this exercise and is there a limit to how many times I should do it per day?
Everyone is different, I’d go based upon what feels right
What do you charge for a short zoom call .I damaged my finger February last year .my finger won't fully straighten. It feel like it will snap the joint when I try stretch .

Excellent. Dr. i live in India. what is the cause of a trigger finger
Also from India. Google metabolic syndrome trigger finger.
Tnx doc for all info. 12 days back have had pointer finger surgery. Had tried all steps, massage, exercises, steroid shot. Nothing worked. Compelled to go for surgery. Problem still same. Plz advise. I live in Mauritius.
A popsicles stick and two bands. I now have an Oval 8 splint for my thumb. It is working out very well, and it is easy to keep clean.

Thanks just bought one on Amazon will try it developing trigger finger in my middle finger very painful hopefully can resolve it thanks for video

Is the hand splint used only when sleeping?
Would you suggest this in a 4.5 year old boy? Could be because his cousin hit his hand with a toy , but a hand surgeon recommended surgery and we didn’t I’ve been giving epsom salt baths and massages … not sure what to do I’d like to avoid surgery at all costs … it’s his right hand ring finger triggering … and I wrap it at night but he takes it off 😞
Thank you very much for the advice. I appreciate it.
Thank you, Dr.

How would you go about the stretch for trigger thumb?
You just pull it up
Hey Dr Story! I was going to make an appt to come see you about my thumb, and then you posted this perfect video explaining my problem. Great timing! I ordered the splint, and I'll start heating and stretching. What do you think about ibuprofen for the inflammation?
It might help but the splint will help more. Graston and laser help as well. BTW, I planned this because the universe told me about your thumb (Ha Ha).
@@AdamJStoryDC That's exactly what I thought when I saw the video :) Splint is arriving today. What about electric stimulation? I have a small unit that I use on my back.
@@kristiesimpson9925 you can try it. It won’t hurt. I never use ES in the office for this condition because I haven’t found it to be much benefit IMHO... I usually just get aggressive with the Graston

I don't understand, why is it helpful to stretch and also to immobilize with a brace? Those two things seem to be inverse of each other.
I've had carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists and dequervains on one wrist. Just had an injection for trigger thumb and I'm hoping to avoid another surgery. I work with my hands and I'm an active wheelchair user so the surgeries really interfere with EVERYTHING I do.
Thanks!
@@jerseyshoredroneservices225 immobilize so inflammation goes back - stretching so that gliding of tendons can improve due to more flexibility and relaxation of whole system
Thanks.
The stretch is great
Pressing the golf ball between my 2 palms...is it helpful?
Hi Adam where can find information of the vingerbrace?
I decided to give this a try because what else do i have to do since getting an appointment with a GP is such a metric pain in the ass, it burned like high hell, but after the 2 minutes, it did give me quite a bit of relief, i'll likely reply to myself here tomorrow to say if the relief continued
so far the stretch seems to have kept the issue at bay.
I wonder whether there's any connection in the development of trigger finger and a decades ago habit of cracking the knuckles. I ask because i'm 69 now and moons ago i used to crack my knuckles periodically.
Thank you, great to know that I can try to fix it.
Happy to help
Thanks for your suggestions Doc🙏

Thanks, just started locking up couple days ago.
I just had trigger finger release surgery for the clicking issue I had with my pinky finger. I play guitar, and it is my fretting hand that is the issue. What do you recommend post-surgery to have a full recovery with full range of motion for my pinky?
When I saw your video in the sidebar I thought it was going to be about when your finger hurts after shooting at the range. LOL!
holy molly, that works, thank you!
Not really. It’s like injuries. Injuries and Disabilities are not same.
Cortisone shots have always worked for me.
Where can I find your splint?
for me it seem to developed recently. its in both hands but only bad in the morning. after about an hour it is back to good till the next morning. will try the suggestions
Hey....don't delay starting dealing with it. Bcoz I ignored the morning stiffness for about a month and look what I got
My thumb is like iron tough. It has lost its bend on the first knuckle. If bends accidentally, I yell 😢
No massage, exercise, stretching, hot cold bath, vitamins, splints have worked so far 😢
Run....and see some Dr before it's too late
I was really fortunate. I had it severe in my ring finger on my left hand. A single injection of cortisone and it was fixed. 10 years and never returned.
What kind of exercise can I do for just the thumb knuckle that is the only part that hurts I exercise it on a daily basis I'm pulling like your video shows I do wear a brace on it but it's just the knuckle that hurts
i'm going to try these exercises
Been wearing the figure 8 ring for over a month night and day
Starting massage and stretching three for thimes a day.... Keep uou informef
Yes I tried cortisone shots and helped for the first treatment but after that and a second one third one it didn't work
Thank you this helped !
