It's important to note that smartphone sales are dropping all across the board right now, not just with iPhones.
That said, I still think it's important to look at why people might not be buying iPhones specifically... but what do you think about all this? Will the downward trend continue?

No. At least I don't think so. Apples had a history of learning from their mistakes. Such as with the iPhone 5c. For a more recent example, you could look at IOS 12. Being more performance than, clunky? Anyway, if the longevity of apples phones are hurting their sales as you predicted, would next years iphones be cheaper but at the cost of how long they last? Only time will tell, I guess.

You mention support as justifying price. Good point, but how do we know that will continue? I was surprised to see iOS support for my wife's 5s this year. What happens next year if they drop the 6 and 7 to try and force people to buy new phones? Obviously the market is tired of price increases so maybe support will be the next thing on the chopping block?

I’d say it’s the insane price hike and the marginal upgrades in technology.
It’s what $1100 to get a XS? I think a lot of people are happy with whatever they’re rocking with right now. The Pixel 1 and 2 are fine, the iPhone 7 still works perfectly, and hell, I’m typing this on my SE. There’s no need to get a new phone with the perfectly acceptable phones on the market.
Now a lot of tech nowadays is still insanely good but like I feel that there’s not a huge difference in day to day performance between all these iPhones and stuff. The X and XS, for example.
Apple won’t die out for a very, very long time. People still need phones and people who are being introduced to the smartphone world are definitely going to be looking for new phones.

Handles iOS12 with ease, good battery life, 3D Touch and the last iPhone with an audio headphone jack input. Camera is still good, video’s can be filmed in 1080p 30 & 60 FPS and even 4K with 30 FPS. The A9 and M9 SoC plus co processor is very efficient. It can handle heavy workloads without getting slow. Sure, I like the new iPhones but I don’t feel the need for a 2018 model at the moment.

For the majority of phone users, it's just not worth the price, regardless of the specs. The market is currently saturated with mid-tier alternatives that serve most people's needs just fine. To pay more than USD1k for a phone is elevating what is meant to be a utilitarian device into a luxury item that is just a bit much. And I think this is true of the whole tech market at the moment... consumers are becoming fatigued by the relentless quarterly cycles of neo-gadgetry fetishization. I get excited over new tech just as much as the next person... but do I really need it? Most of the time, the answer is simply a pragmatic no. The market and all its innovations will not die by any means... but for manufacturers to think that consumer demand is a bottomless well is unrealistic and unsustainable.

Thanks for the video; I actually learned something!
I've been an iPhone user since version 1, but only upgrade every 3rd generation or so. I've never understood how people are so willing to pay so much for a phone that they only use for a year and then upgrade. But that's me.
The sales drops are due almost entirely to the price points, although the lack of a button does play in as well. I think the retina idea is good, and making better use of the screen is good, but just not for everyone. But the main thing is price. When your top of the line iPhone XS Max with 512 of memory tops out at $1450... cmon!! That's not just a LITTLE over priced, it's MASSIVELY over priced. And so it goes on down the line. Apple probably will not do it but they need to SLASH prices by $200 (or more!) pretty much across the board to remain competitive and maintain marketshare dominance.
I remain a die hard Apple fan but I'm no fool and will hold off on upgrading yet again. It's not a life-support system, it's just a phone!

    Couple of Unfair Practices
    1. Repair issue - apple doesnt repair devices or heck even at least change batteries. I approach them to change battery on my 1 yr old ipad pro, they dont want to even if ill pay. I has an issue with my 1yr iphone x screen touch, they dont want to repair, and said to replace the whole phone.
    2. Updates that slow down
    3. Low value for money
    4. Competitors are catching up OS wise - before its no brainer to choose iOS if you want smooth ux, nowadays, stock android is super smooth
    5. Not consumer centric design - my macbook butterfly keyboard is just bad, compared to my surfacebook 2, they value thin device for their keynote to be impressive, but not for consumer, headphone jack
Not an apple hater really, i have all apple devices, but just feels bad what the brand has turned into

Why not have expandable storage with the cloud, seamless access without some lame portable drive I noticed you gave a link for. My last iPhone was a 4s which I had for 5 years. I currently still daily drive a Aluminum MacBook (not Pro) from 2008. A ten year old laptop! And it works perfectly. Still peppy, never lags, and never crashed. My wife’s laptop is a MacBook Pro from 2009, no issues there either. If you’re gonna buy an iPhone for anything, it should be longevity. the reason that the iphones aren’t selling very good is because their so damn expensive and you are always trying to defend them

  • @5abivt
    @5abivt 5 лет назад +3

    The real reason:
    1. The 7/8 are great and do mostly everything people need. The new phones are insanely expensive for minimal upgrades.
I have a 7+ that runs like new. I do want a better camera , but I have an SLR I seldomly use so it’s not a necessity. Which comes to the next point :
    2. Price. If it wasn’t as expensive , I would have sold my 7+ as I usually do with AppleCare warranty remaining and upgraded. But to get $600 cdn back for my mint 7+ and to pay $2300 for a 10s max 512 with AppleCare ..
Waiting patiently for the note 10. Android here I come !

Updates are actually quite annoying at times. They take time and can introduce horrible bugs *cough windows 10 cough*. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. People may say that you nees it for malware protection. Use common sense and get Malwarebytes. Not an Apple hater and i used the 3G and the 4 but, when i see what other phones like the Note 9 and Mate 20 offer (in display fingerprint scanner, iris scanners and all that) i just cannot pay that money for an iPhone when all the other phones have better tech on them, also not to mention that they won't even offer a fast charger in the box for that price, and every year there are almost 0 differences between them, they look the same and they almost have the same performance. Also iOS is so restricted vs android,i hate that i need to use iTunes just to transfer photos or music from my iPhone to my computer,or that i cannot customize it.They are not bad phones, but they are not worth the price, more like 800-900$ and they would be fine to me,but over 1000$? Nah.Also i know they offer 6 years of support but honestly,iOS kind of looks the exact same since iOS 7 and there are barely any changes to it,at least visual. And with android phones you can just install a newer version via custom rom and be done with it.

Why is this even a question at all? People aren't buying iPhones, probably for several reasons, but mainly they can't afford to keep buying a new phone for 800-1000 dollars every few months. Besides that, people are finally wising up to Apple's shady practices like "updating" phones to go slower over time so people feel the need to buy a new one. The class action lawsuit about it is spreading awareness. More and more people are also starting to understand that the only thing they're paying those big bucks for is the Apple name and not actual build quality or better(or even equivalent) hardware.
I've personally never been a fan of apple beyond the days of elementary school. But since I've been old enough and smart enough to pay attention and understand what's going on, I've seen nothing that appeals to me. Every once in a while they do some slightly innovative thing like slap an interface on a hard drive to create the first probably actually good MP3 player in terms of storage capacity(but then they force you to use their shitty software like itunes and quicktime), and then turn that into a mini computer that's also a phone. Without Apple we wouldn't have smartphones like we do today. But most people can't afford and can't justify the thousand dollars it costs to buy a brand new iphone that won't even let them plug fucking headphones into the damn thing.
Me personally? I have a hard enough time justifying spending 50 or 100 bucks on a phone. I just recently picked up a Moto E5 Plus from MetroPCS, a $150-$200 phone. I paid about about $70 for the first monthly bill, activation, and taxes, and I got the phone for free. Or I bought the phone for $70. However you wanna look at it, I'm sure there are a lot of other people out there like me who don't have a huge budget for phones, especially in a day when most people don't make enough money to live completely alone, which means that disposable income is down.

My opinion is iPhone needs to reinvent their strategy. They need to put expandable memory slots; make their apps like messenger be able to communicate with other platforms out there; stop acting like they are the only show in town and stop acting like headphones and charging bricks are accessories instead of necessities needed to make the phone experience complete; fix that os so you can make the home screen more customizable so you can make it your own and lastly stop treating your fans like crap by overcharging them for everything like they have no option. They have options now and those options are cheaper and better!
