IS CELL DBZ'S ULTIMATE VILLAIN?! | Dragon Ball Z Discussion

  • I may like Perfect Cell a lot, but it seems like the general feeling of Dragon Ball Z likes Perfect Cell too (not to mention his journey!). Today, I want to discuss why this is and why Haverok and I believe that Cell may be lending himself to Nietzsche and the ideas of the bug-man being the Superhuman or "übermensch" archetype fighting against humanity's mundane society. Is this the case? Let's discuss.

      @@KidArkx Sadly true. I wouldn't be surprised if Japanese audiences disliked him for breaking the trend of ironically proportioned villains, because unlike Frieza, Buu, and Vegeta he looks threatening at first glance.

    What makes Cell even more interesting is how, through his presence alone, he brings out the very worst side in everyone. Vegeta falls for the bait and allows Cell to go perfect, Kuririn's selfishness at not destroying Android 18, Gohan getting totally lost in his newfound aggression to the point of arrogance. It's almost poetic how Goku sacrifices himself for everyone's sins (even his own). Moreover, Cell has such a great sense of humour about it all and totally "gets" each character.

  • @Kruegernator123
    @Kruegernator123 5 лет назад +75

    I love Cell because he has the potential to become the strongest mortal in all of existence. Coupled with the longevity, magical abilities and regeneration of the Namekians (Piccolo/Kami); the durability, hardiness and raw talent from the Frost Demons (Frieza/King Cold), and the Zenkai boosts, transformations, and slowed aging from the Saiyans (Goku/Vegeta),
    Cell could exist for potentially thousands of years and still be in top fighting shape, much like Hit. I wonder if Cell could have even absorbed his enemy's DNA and add their traits and abilities to his own, much like what Majin Buu did? I think that's how he attained the Instant Transmission from Goku. Just imagine if he somehow got DNA from other fighters, like Hit, Jiren, or even Beerus or Whis? He would be unstoppable.
    Not forgetting to mention all of the plethora of transformations at his disposal too, thanks to the Saiyans and Frieza. He could probably even stack them on each other, like Super Saiyan Blue and Frieza's Golden form. The Kaio-ken is there too, which would make him even more deadly. He could maybe reach Jiren's level without Ultra Instinct.
    Doctor Gero had an incredible amount of insight to create such a powerful character from only having such a small amount of data: only the fights and cellular DNA from the middle-end of Dragon Ball (the fights w/Tien, King Piccolo & Piccolo Jr) to the early stages of Dragon Ball Z (Raditz, Nappa & Vegeta); fighters that had power levels ranging from the low hundreds up to the ten-thousands (only two exceptions being Frieza and King Cold; their full powers were in the hundred-millions).
    I could sit and hypothetically analyze all of Cell's possible powers and abilities all day, but one thing is for certain: Cell is a grievously underrated villain and character in general, and he could be the strongest in the Dragon Ball series if he really wanted to.

      King Colds race are a type of bioform that has control over the form they can take, so cell could even unlock further biological evolutions as he gained more power.
      Also in theory Cell could repeatedly blow himself up and regenerate, and spam zenkai boost until he's on par with Beerus.
      The mixture of saiyan, namekian, and King Cold's DNA is so powerful. Cell truly is the perfect being.

    Something I’ve recently realized about Cell:
    It could be argued he was the first “evil Goku” before Black. Think about it. From a personality standpoint, Perfect Cell was basically the same as Goku. He held the Cell Games to fight the strongest opponent, which is sort of how the ToP came about. Cell’s driving motivation and goals are very similar to Goku’s.
    I also feel like Cell is the easiest villain to like in the series (as far as
    Z, and outside of Vegeta) because he has a lot of nuisance and depth. He has some actual redeeming qualities and even though he is self-righteous and arrogant, he is laid-back and just likable in general.
    I have more I could say but that’s basically the majority of it, if you have anything to add, feel free. I’d like to discuss Cell more 🤗🤓

    I have to say I prefer Goku Black and Cell over the other villains. Cell is interesting because he isn’t interested in conquest, he wants to test his power, and fight someone who could rival his power, like a darker version of Goku’s personality. Goku Black, isn’t evil for the sake of evil, he is a righteous soul who has walked the wrong path. He truly believes that what he is doing is the only way to justice and salvation for the universe. He kind of reminds me of a few alternate versions of Ultron, a machine that deduces all life is a threat to peace, because in a way, they’re not wrong. Should all life be eradicated, then there would nothing, just an echoing silence, and many consider silence to be peaceful.

    I agree with your thoughts Masako; Cell is greatly underappreciated by the franchise despite him being in himself the best written villain of all Dragonball to date. Every other major villain was just... there as a powerful antagonist with no real development purely as an antagonist (im not counting development to protagonists like Vegeta or Piccolo).
    It was extremely interesting to hear your expanded view on the subject as I always viewed it as the ultimate pacifist (Gohan) vs the ultimate sadist (Cell) and with the ending of their fight culminating in one of the singly greatest underappreciated acts from from everyone; Gohan standing as the new bulwark for the Earth with everyone else firing at Cell trying to help as best as they could and the only way they won was from Vegeta truly starting the journey towards the character he became in Super and distracting him.

      There's a tragedy to Perfect Cell as a character that I really don't see many people talk about. Perfect Cell is a man whose life lost all purpose because he achieved everything he ever wanted. He's suffering through an existential crisis brought about by the realization that even achieving his dreams did not leave him with the fulfillment he was seeking.

    • @zylgp
      @zylgp 5 лет назад +3

      I would say that only occurs for the briefest of moments; originally he wanted to become perfect, then he wanted to prove he could best Goku. It was during the initial confrontation with Gohan that Cell had lost all meaning to his existence as he had nothing else to strive for... until he learnt of Gohan's hidden potential which his seeking for fulfillment drove him towards.awakening it no matter the cost. At the point where he died; correct he had completed almost all of his goals but there was still 1 thing pushing him forwards which was killing Gohan.
      Now if he had beaten Gohan and blown up the earth with his final kamehameha, then I reckon in his personal quest he would go off to seek greater challenges (which as we know from Super would be extremely unlikely considering the grand total of 48 inhabitable planets...). It would be during this time that he would come to realize his life would have little to no meaning and would fall into despair before eventually being erased most likely by Beerus or through the events of the Universal Tournament being won by someone who would use the Super Dragonballs selfishly.

    • @zylgp
      @zylgp 5 лет назад +2

      Firstly please note that I did not use the word hero or villain in my first staement; I used the words protagonist and antagonist. Vegeta was certainly a villain on Namek but he was still a protagonist (one that the actual heroes had to work around warily as they were aware he could turn on them at any second) as far as the story was concerned with the Frieza forces being the main antagonists.
      Beyond Namek the only true time Vegeta truly became an antagonist was during the Buu arc (a part of me thinks it was just fanservice to see Goku and Vegeta fight as SSJ2). After he sucker punched Goku into submission he flipped again and became a protagonist.
      Saying Vegeta wasn't arrogant and actions did not directly lead to the rise of Perfect Cell would be a plain lie. However despite these flaws in his character, again as far as the story was concerned he was a protagonist with the antagonist being Cell. Admittedly that whole section of the Android / Cell saga was very messy with the Androids and Vegeta flipping from antagonist to protagonist and vice versa that I can accept the viewpoint that Vegeta could be either.
      For Goku's death you could put the blame on all the Z fighters for not using the dragonballs and killing the androids before they got too strong, you could put it on Goku for not taking the medicine and not suffering from heart troubles early on, and you could blame any of the saiyans when Cell immediately reverted for not diving in for the kill (as pointed out in DBZA they were all proven strong enough and all recovered using sensu beans).

    Cell is my favorite Dragon Ball villian as well. Masako doesn't mention this but Cell brings up the concept of free will as well. Is he only fulfilling his programming trying to become perfect or is that what he truly wants? I think he is the most nuanced villain.

  • @Za11oy
    @Za11oy 5 лет назад +63

    To be honest, Cell was always my favorite villain from DBZ, over Frieza even if the overlord had unlocked the first Super Saiyan transformation in Goku. To me it felt like he was much more cunning and really for the most part always managed to get his way, weither it was a timely giving them the slip, letting loose the right information or power, convincing people with his words in Vegeta's case. He was a truly formidable foe. And not just purely dangerous because of how powerful he was.
    While being dangerous and villainous in their own way. Frieza and Broli were seeming simpletons in contrast. And I'm not saying that in a way to imply that Frieza had no brain, because one probably doesn't rule a fair share of a galaxy through only brute force alone. But when facing the Z-fighters and Goku, it seemed to be the only plan he ever had, to brute force it and put them in their place.

    • @dontmisunderstand6041
      @dontmisunderstand6041 5 лет назад +9

      Not saying that Frieza has no brain either, but his empire was entirely based around his favorite pastime, ultimatums. Serve me or die. Gonna have to file that under the brute force category.

    • @dontmisunderstand6041
      @dontmisunderstand6041 5 лет назад +4

      I think the reason Meruem worked so well as a character is that we see quite literally his entire life. Every event of any significance whatsoever that ever happened to him, happened right before the audience's eyes. I can't think of a single other character, in all of anime, that the audience gets to know with such detail and presence. Meruem is so easy for people to find worth in because there's absolutely no guesswork. No margin for error. The audience knows Meruem better than they will ever know anybody in their own family. Because there are no blind spots in the audience's knowledge of Meruem's thoughts, actions, and reactions.

    Honestly the Cell Saga was truly when DBZ should have ended and the new generation started. He was a villain you could see negotiating, getting stronger or creating new techniques. Cell also had a very good shot at winning to go with his cool design! You wanted Cell to lose but win at the same time for that. Yet instead of bringing him back for the tournament or doing anything else creative with him. Everything went back to the status quo and we keep getting Frieza over and over again. Sure I liked Frieza back during his arc but past that? Not really as he just didn't evolve in any way you'd care. I've been ready for something else again for a long time. Cell was always my favourite villain because he was the scariest to me. He was a monster who went after other monsters (the androids). The ones who should have been the main antagonists of the series, he saw as prey, and he also wiped out entire cities, but in a brand new way I never saw before in a DB series, ad haven't seen since. i saw Nappa and Vegeta and others, just appear nd vaporize cities in a brief show of power. And I saw Frieza and his goons take out villages like mobsters, intimidating and killing for sport.
    But Cell was the only villian I ever saw, who killed off entire cities quietly. Personally. He would physically go to every single man woman and child, and purely absorb them. It was a painful and disgusting process, that he had to do thousands/ millions of times...and did it so well and fast that no one ever got away (except for 2 people.) He never destroyed a building and left everything in tact, oly their cloths were left behind and jut the implications, the visuals...it was terrifying.
    Cell was for the longest time, what I considered a real monster, and was the only DBZ villian I ever feared. The others were just bad guys you had to beat, who would blow up planets impersonally for shits and giggles. But cell...everything he did was personally. His goals were human, and his final form was the result of all his hard work.
    Cell was the best

      This, unfortunately. Even if power levels are a grim spectre hanging over the franchise we'd rather forget most times, they exist. Now, there's nothing to say we can't give Cell a powerup through any number of cheating methods, be it a Super Sayian form, or more interestingly, a Super Namekian style absorption of... Say, himself from another timeline? But Freeza was the one who had relevant power-ups established before the T.O.P, so to raise Cell instead under that premise is flimsy at the best and would reek of handwaving power creep. Not that that wasn't ALREADY a problem for the T.O.P.

      I could legit think even SPC would have been more dangerous than TGF. In fact I could actually see Cell flipping the entire tournament's script by eliminating Kale, Monna, allowing Hit to beat Jiren, potentially getting Goku eliminated vs Aniraza, in fact the whole arc would probably be better written if this were the case.

    The Cell Saga was the best in the DBZ franchise. Even the Android Saga leading to it was done well as it gave more of a platform for Cell to really show. It highlighted Gohan in a good way and showed Vegeta's heart more. Cell brought the best out of those two characters. Frieza simply just pushed Goku over the edge. That is all he did.

And I think episode 52 of DBZA was the first one I ever watched in the series simply because I had seen the Funimation dub of DBZ Kai the weekend before on Toonami, and I was searching on RUclips for that same fight and I came across Lanipator and Takahata doing those voices. Needless to say, Cell will always be my favorite. And you and all the guys at TFS will always be my favorite voices and producers.

And once he got to Perfect Cell I found his personality really grating. He has so much self pride he makes Vegeta look humble.

    I was 10 years old, and in my birthday, I asked for a Cell-shaped piñata (pinyata; I'm mexican). I knew, since then, that Cell was the most perfect villan, the most elegant and (in latin dubbed) the sexiest voice of a monster; deep and machine-like. And he steals vegeta's dialogs. When it comes to presence, both Imperfect Cell and Perfect Cell are easily uncontested throughout Z. In terms of presentation, Perfect Cell rules the roost, a sadistic showman looking for a good time. The problem, however, is foundation and direction - namely in that he doesn’t have either of these.
    His origin is as a consequence rather than an individual, and once he’s become Perfect, any possible goals he may have beyond “fight Goku” are basically a shoulder shrug. Frieza and Buu didn’t have this problem; Frieza was a rare prodigy brought up in tyranny who yearned for eternal rule, Buu was an eldritch being that slayed the gods aiming for nothing but the end of all existence. These origins and destinations help complete them and round out their characters, but Cell’s just kind of- _there._ He’s moreso a powerful obstacle with charisma than a proper villain.
    The stakes just don’t carry the same kind of punch as they did on Namek and the Sacred World of the Kais; he doesn’t sell the idea of anything beyond an archrival sort effectively, because that’s really all he’s _designed_ to be without further purpose.

      I've always felt the same way you do, but this line of thought actually makes me think that Cell could potentially be a great anti hero. Think about it, he is way more chill and non chalant than Frieza, and has a much better personality than Buu. His interactions with the main cast would be priceless since he knows each and everyone of them in one way or another - just look at DBZF's cutscenes, which nailed his personality, imo. I could definitely see him being the sort of guys who would totally want to go out against the likes of Moro or Broly just to test how powerful he is and just for the fun of it. He doesn't care about human lives, or the planet, which could create an interesting dynamic between him and the Z fighters. Not to mention this could be a great opportunity to make Gohan great again.

    That would be a pretty fun What-if? to see; Cell winning and leaving to explore the galaxy after annihilating the earth. Perhaps in his travels through the stars, he begins to reflect on what his power has got him and either comes to realize that there's more to it than just needless destruction, or wreaking havoc for so long that the Kais and even possibly Beerus show up to challenge him. While I doubt Perfect Cell would up and repent for his actions, I could at least imagine that he'd have an interesting introspective about his existence and the almost limitless power he possesses and what feats he could accomplish as someone bordering on godly prowess.

    Don't forget Cell's purpose provided by Gero was simply to kill Goku. Something Cell wanted to do but at his own pace. Cell didn't seem to have a purpose beyond fighting, getting better, and asserting his perfection. He's kind of like Goku in that aspect as he likes to fight for the sake of it to test his limits and push them even further. He's also like Vegeta in that he doesn't like losing and he has a bad temper for it as well. He got angry not only when losing against Super Vegeta in his second form but also when ssj2 Gohan was beating him up.
    Ultimately Cell has no upper limits since he can absorb the cells of others and gain their powers. He can be a ssj god. He can be a god of destruction. He could even be an angel. And the most dangerous thing about him is his ambition. He's not like Frieza in that he has a single goal of controlling everything. He's not like Buu in that he wants to destroy everything. He's a bit of both. He wants to achieve more and destroy more and he hasn't really figured out an endgame. That makes him unpredictable.

    The bit about a grasp on the Earth made me think of GT and the Earth being the Moon that turned Kid Goku into a Golden Oozaru and it struck me that SSJ4 is Ubermensch. Goku takes hold of his existence and his life to surpass his enemies and considering the power of the Evil Dragons, he also surpasses the Gods. And it is a purely Saiyan thing. Compare that to God and Blue transformations of Super. They require a form of Ki that is not naturally developed in the body, requiring Divine Influence/ Holy Ritual. Thus they are Forms that are beholden to another Being. Whereas SSJ4, the Saiyan is beholden to no-one. Something to consider.

    When you look back on it, until the Tournament of Power, Freeza, once you remove the lore connecting him to the Saiyans, was a sophisticated thug who sat back for his entire arc until he entered the iconic fight on Namek; letting his men do the dirty work before he could get immortality or revenge. Buu changed so much in personality that it’s hard to keep track of who he is at the moment, with Super Buu being the one closest to having a villainous drive of his own accord, rather than being ignorant or being a force of chaos. Cell had defined goals from the very start, active until the ten days before the Cell Games, then went back to being active again; was a personal archenemy to everyone with Goku being the sole exception; was intimidating in all forms and caused the most development in characters through his actions.

  • @XPator
    @XPator 5 лет назад +1

    I'll give you that. Cell himself, compared to most DBZ villains, is not as much of a one-note character thrown against the Z Warriors just for the sake of having a villain to beat. That job was reserved to Doctor Gero, 19, the Ginyu Force, Raditz, and such.
    Cell's strongsuit was indeed his personality, his evolution throughout his story arc, and the dread he represents, at least up until he decides to make "the Cell Games".
    I'm okay with villains who don't want to die, or act like disgusting monsters the whole way through. Cell was depicted as a real -perfected- warrior pretty much the whole time he was on, and he was awesome. Then, when Gohan finally answered his Cat Call by going berzerk and threaten to end his life, he did the most dishonorable thing I least expected him to do: He presented Gohan with an Ultimatum. "hit me and the whole planet goes boom".
    I may be alone on this subject, but I like villains I can -begrudgingly- respect. I like Negan from Walking Dead, 'cause he makes no compromises and stays on course with his own morals. Stupidly, I like Ganondorf from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, because despite what exploits you do as a player to beat the crap out of him, in the end you're still presented with a true warrior's duel with the main villain of the saga. He doesn't run away with the History Eraser button, pooping with fear like a wiener. Cell has honor, as long as he's on top. When he starts to fail, he cracks and turns into a bitching wiener boy, craps his non-existent pants, and ultimately threatens to blow up the planet if Gohan touches him. He's a villain I don't respect.
    Frieza might have been an uppity weasel with many forms which, honestly, could have been cut down to three with no impact on the story, but at least he felt like an unstoppable force at the head of an empire. When he finally got beat, it was meaningful, poetic justice. All the more fitting for him to lose his cool and try to stab Goku in the back, and failing. He didn't come back 3 more times saying "Haha! Once again you kicked my ass and fell right into my trap!".
    -If Cell didn't just act like a wiener boy, I might have liked him better. But this part, along with his incessant regenerative abilities which actually don't quite work like Piccolo's do, made him a villain difficult to sit through. Memorable, maybe, but not as enjoyable and meaningful.

    As much as the idea is hated by most other fans I still think it was a terribly missed opportunity when they didn't revive Cell for the tournament arc of Super. I mean lets all be honest Krillin, Tien and Piccolo were NEVER going to accomplish much. I mean Krillin literally got canned immediately even after hyping his new training and solar flare. Having Cell, Frieza and Majin Buu (he was so hyped with that new toned form) would have made an incredible dynamic. The banter between Cell and Gohan alone would have been brilliant. I'm not saying he needs to pull a 180 like 18 and 17 did but you gotta admit, the guys motivation for the majority of time was simply ''get perfect, then flex''. I mean if they're willing to revive Frieza (a literal Tyrant) why not Cell? Oh well.

    It's interesting you make a reference to Thanos, because I think one of the reasons Cell is my favorite _Dragon Ball_ villain.
    When the story focused on him, he legitimately felt more like the protagonist. I wanted him to achieve his perfect form because he'd potentially be able to open the eyes of our Saiyan characters. His actions and interactions with our main characters *did* affect Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Trunks arcs in the Android/Cell era.

    Imperfect Cell is very underrated imo, people tend to dismiss him but never forget it was Imperfect Cell that technically killed Goku
    LOL

    Cell truly is the pinnacle of perfection, DBZ should've ended with Perfect Cell and start something else

    This reason why Toei doesnt bring him back is because they realized he was 2 perfect for this universe.
