Now the one thing Super needs to do is to give poor Goten-chan some development :)

He's the best written character, easily. Vegeta has consistently gone through changes ever since his introduction, his character arc has a legitimate rise and fall and subsequent rise again. Dragon Ball Super has only built onto that by showing us a side of Vegeta that we only glimpsed briefly in Dragon Ball Z, which is that he's vulnerable. Taking Trunks to the park and flinching when Whis told him that he would only train him if he became a god of destruction were priceless. Even him giving Future Trunks tough love one minute and then comforting him the next. I love it.

I vehementely disagree when people say Vegeta's character degraded in comparison to his character during the Buu/Cell sagas. Vegeta still has his instances of being pridful, but doesn't let those traits of his define all his actions. I like Vegeta now because he's willing to put up with other people like Beerus in order to develop his own growth and doesn't get as clouded by others provocations as often. Not to mention he's developed into a compassionate father who was willing to push beyond his limits for his son. DBS Vegeta is best Vegeta.

i.e character development. him not being 2 dimensional could hardly be called degradation. for a while now there's been more to his character than just

    • @timothymclean

Fiery Fox I'm not entirely clear why Gohan needed a trial by fire...especially since he helped fight Nappa, Dodoria, the Ginyus, and Frieza before anyone had even heard of androids. I'm also not clear on why Cell needed the senzu to be a proper trial for Gohan.

Vegeta, to me, deserved a few movie victories and the chance to kill frieza in Resurrection of F. Frieza killed his family and wiped out his people and Goku gets to kill him. He almost killed him the first time, then TRUNKS gets to kill him, and now Goku gets the second kill. I don't think he's ever had a single victory in either a movie or the series.

I was working on a comment about Goku when I realized something: Dragon ball Super seems more focused around Vegeta's family than with Goku's. Besides what as discussed in this video, we have already discussed how Goten has gotten the shaft so far, Gohan isn't much of a fighter anymore so we aren't following him as much either, meanwhile we just got through an arc focusing on Future Trunks while more times than naught, we follow kid Trunks interaction with Mai, and Bulma appeasing Beerus and Whis and almost talking to them in the same fashion as anyone else I spite of how Beerus could casually destroy the planet at anytime.
Kind of weird to consider it, but it could very well be the case where if DBZ followed Goku's family, DBS does tend to follow Vegeta's family more.

Goku hasn't really developed since the original Dragon Ball. Which is kind of a shame-he has some pretty serious flaws that the writers could work with, if they so chose. Heck, sometimes other characters call him out on it! An episode where Goku admits that he could have been in Gohan's life more when he was a child-not staying in space so long, IT'ing or at least telepathically calling Gohan from the afterlife, trying to understand Gohan's interests instead of bringing Gohan to Goku's interests (e.g, training-which is what Goku and Gohan did most of the time they were together post-Raditz)-and tries to make up for lost time by listening at one of Gohan's conferences or something could be a solid episode. Goku trying to act as a responsible role moden for Goten and a good husband for Chi-Chi instead of always vanishing to train with Whis or King Kai would be a solid arc. Heck, even working to overcome his absent-mindedness could work.
Or just leave Goku as-is, pretending that he's already ideal. Sure, whatever.

I could see that working if they chose to go that direction. Maybe Goku actually starts to notice the way Vegeta has been interacting with his family lately and realizes his could use more attention as well, especially after his outburst against Black when he found out he killed his family in the other universe. They don't even have to make it a super serious moment either. Maybe Goku tries to get it figured out on his own resulting in one comedic failure after another with Chi-Chi wondering what the hell is wrong with him.

I love me some vegeta but I think we've focused to much on his family and not alot on goku and his family

In terms of development yes Vegeta is the single best character in the series, the only character rivalling Vegeta is his son(s) both kid and future Trunks and that's only if you count their development from Z too. Vegeta is a natural born leader, a good father and a better family man than Goku has ever been. And I say this as a big Goku fan.

  • @Justmyhandle

*In terms of character development, these three characters are my personal top three favorites (in no particular order):*
*Gohan-* Sure, many fans dislike that his potential as Goku's successor went down the drain (there's no good reason he couldn't be a scholar, a parent and still find a little time to train, just one hour at least on weekends). Nonetheless, I found Gohan not only more fleshed out and relatable than his dad but portrayed as a child in extraordinary situations near-perfectly. From age 4, we've followed the highs and lows of his journey to become the proud, kind young man he is today.
*Future Trunks-* Having experienced the most tragic and challenging life of any Dragonball protagonist (growing up in a post-apocalypse without his dad, losing the only mentor/father-figure he's known to the androids, losing his mom to Goku Black, protecing his timeline as the last Z Fighter, etc), I think it's fair to say that it SUCKS to be Trunks. However, possibly more than Gohan, this super saiyan samurai's sheer love for humanity and determination is inspiring beyond measure.
*Vegeta-* Arguably the perfect example of a redeemed villain (yes, even more so than Piccolo), the prideful saiyan prince has gone from one of the Z Fighters' most feared enemies to a dear friend and tough but loving husband/father. Despite growing up in a culture where genocide was a way of life and being humiliated for years under the thumb of a racist tyrant, he gradually learned the values of what it means to fight for others. Vegeta is living proof that anybody really can change.

Goku was the best in Dragonball.
Krillin (Yes, KRILLIN) was the best in Dragonball Z (It's easy to fight Frieza, the Androids, Cell, Buu, when you're an ultra-powerful Saiyan. Krillin did it as a HUMAN, and as such is the bravest and also kindest man besides Goku in the entire series).
NO ONE was the best in GT.
Vegeta is the best in Super (closely followed by both present and future Trunks).

Vegeta is such an amazing character in Super. Taking Trunks to the fair if he could beat him in training, "THAT'S MY BULMA!", kicking the shit out of Golden Frieza, _training_ Cabba to become a Super Saiyan... in the middle of a fight, sacrificing himself to save Trunks from the Comesson, his interactions with Future Trunks, and finally the speech he gave while beating Goku Black into the ground. Good GOD, these were some amazing moments.

Super kinda ruined sorry if I disagree but the reason I say this is in the buu saga vegita finally admits that he is not the strongest guy around and that is true development for his character who practically never shut the fuck about himself. Also he wasn't forced under friezas rule he did that and enjoyed it so him being a victim is bs

robert rainford Vegeta finally admitting Kakarrot is stronger than he is is just the _beginning_ of his post-heel-face-turn character development, though. It took the entirety of Z for him to finally give up his evil ways. He was still a self-serving prick as far as we knew at the end, he just admitted defeat. This time around, we're seeing his development take the next step. We see him becoming much more selfless while still being in-character. He's adjusting to his family life with surprising but believable ease. He's putting his Saiyan pride to use.
Also he may enjoy his job under Frieza's rule, but I'm sure you can understand that he holds a wee bit of a grudge when his boss is the one who _murdered his family along with his entire race._

robert rainford What? He didn't enjoy working under freeza, he hated being told what to do. He enjoyed killing people but as saiyan royalty, as a prince he hated being ordered around and having his pride mocked constantly. In ROF the movie, freeza offered vegeta to come work for him again and Vegeta said hell no because he blew up the planet he was destined to rule. He also called him stupid for thinking that he would.
He hated freeza, but had no choice but to be his slave along with the saiyan race until freeza killed most of them leaving 5 and 3 that worked under him. He was victim of freeza. Freeza even killed him too. He definitely is a victim.

Moments like when he first shows attachment to others when Cell killed Trunks or when he learns to accept life on Earth and acknowledging Goku... I think those were really nice in Z
It doesn't surprise me at all that in Super, Vegeta continues striving to become stronger; he is a saiyan after all, and he also needs to be stronger to protect his family
Besides, one key point he made when acknowledging Goku as the "number one fighter" was how Goku, unlike him, never fought to kill or for any of that stuff, but rather to test himself and what he's achieved and grow from the experiences

I agree Vegeta is best. The closest Goku has came to not being "himself" (moron) is when Zamasu told him about his family and how he murdered them. That was the best of Goku from Super. Anybody agree?

My favourite Goku moment from Super was when Beerus stabbed him as an SSJG, and he sunk slowly to the bottom of the ocean, only to launch back up to space. It was simple, but emotional. In fact, every moment where Beerus knocked Goku down to Earth semi-unconscious was emotion-heavy.

People should just accept super sucks for certain parts of it. Doesn't mean you cant like it, but a REAL fan accepts the faults of a show and still loves it, not pretends it doesn't exist. ALL FIVE dragonball T shows have problems. Its unhealthy to ignore the faults of any of the dragonball shows.

Problem is that tons of Dragonball fans only approve characters who are stone cold badasses. That is why they call Vegeta a pussy when he does something silly. That is why they say Gohan is worthless because he became a family man (and hate Chichi for "ruining" him). And that is why they hate Piccolo when he babysits Pan. Just look how many people want Vegeta to become evil again and blow up a few planets.
On a side note: Piccolo is really good with kids. There is a reason he and Gohan are so close.

      @GeteMachine 7 лет назад

I agree that DBZ fans only accept superficial moments of hype for the characters they like solely for that badass factor, (which for characters like Gohan its ignorant to think he always was one just from one fight) but Vegeta, him tap-dancing for Beerus was pretty cringeworthy to me because of how out of character it was. And I don't care how people justify it, it would have made more sense of the Great Saiyaman, Gotenks or Yamcha did it. Characters whom are generally silly should have been the silly ones. Not Vegeta. But people wanting Vegeta to become evil again don't know the character at all and hence you can see why most DBZ fanfic is garbage.

For all the "goku has always been stupid" comments, I feel you guys forget when he pulled off a Batman Gambit against Cell, repeatedly saw what would happen if everyone relied on him (and attempted many times to avoid), and purposefully destroyed Freiza's Pride, giving him a cruel Mercy at the end of it. That said, they took the guy who did all of that, the guy who showed he understood people more than anyone else in the series so far, and turned him into... what he is in Super. Im fine with them displaying his less appealing traits, thats absolutely wonderful, but to go so far as to regress his character development, subtle as it was, is actually rather insulting. Goku's character development has always been a bit more subtle than others, but thats because they didnt need to do much with him for him to shine in his own way, but it was still there. Super Goku seems more like a parody, and not a good one at that. Whats worse is how it seems like people forget that before he was a universe buster, or even a planet buster, Goku was a master martial artist, not just a street brawler. Even in Super, they kind of retcon just how good at it he was, more during Whis' training than anything, but that can be explained by getting used to the different types of fighting over the years. Either way, I feel they need to let Goku grow more as he was, and greatly lessen the retardation effect.
The reason I say all that is because if only one character shines, even in just CD, then the series starts to become dry and dead. Vegeta advancing SO MUCH as a character is a great thing, up until you realize how much he has advanced compared to other characters.

  • @TsukiNoTragedy

One of my favorite moments that more subtly show how Vegeta's attitude toward his family has changed was from the family holiday episode. When Trunks comes out wearing his new shirt at the shop and Vegeta says something along the lines that he does not care. Then, without a beat, tells Trunks that he missed a button. Did ... did you just parent, Vegeta?
Listen, I have been a Vegeta fan-girl since the early 2000s. I have read countless fanfic and doujin and seen thousands of pieces of fanart; however, there is something so utterly satisfying about seeing a canonical more mature, dare-I-say "caring" Vegeta. He still has his pride intact. He still is a badass. But, you know, he also seems to really care about his family. I am happy with Super in this aspect.
Even though I am a huge Vegbul fan, I do wish there were some more Gochi moments. XD Poor Chichi.

I actually really like how dumb Goku is in Super. A fundamental part of Goku's character is that he is quite literally brain damaged, and has been since he was a child. It contrasts so magnificently with his innate genius as a martial artist. His line about having never kissed Chichi was one of the funniest in all of Dragonball, for me at least. As for Vegeta, he has definitely become the most rounded character in Super. My favorite Vegeta moment in Super is probably when he punched Black in the face while he was monologuing.

I think Goku is the type of character that doesn't need that much development. He serves his purpose as the main character, but his general arc doesn't really require growth. He fights, he eats, he saves the earth. Done. Vegeta is another thing entirely. He is the type of character that needs change, otherwise he would just become unlikeable. Part of the reason why he is my favorite character in DB is because his constant development. He's been evolving ever since he was first introduced.

At this point it's passion for the field to keep going or to get even richer, probably a mixture of both. I think Goku doesn't seem to have much room for development, tbh. I mean, he's in no position to really change himself given he's more or less content with his surroundings at home or at King Kai's. At the start of Super he was being a farmer, which is something I can't recall him doing since he was a kid in Dragon Ball. If there's ever a strong opponent, he drops everything and takes advantage of the opportunity to train and/or fight. As shitty as it sounds, it's become the foundation of Dragon Ball Super. There probably wouldn't be much action in the series unless Goku managed to be the only one who slept through it. At the very end of Z when it was 10 years after Buu (which I'm guessing might become non-canon) Goku actually did something a bit different, and that was he thought ahead for once. Surely he wanted Uub to be strong enough to give Goku a great battle, but he did say he wanted someone else to be earth's fighter. He wasn't going to give that to his family... or Vegeta. With that being said, perhaps Goku was looking forward to settling down after that year was up?
As for Vegeta, I think the most important thing about Vegeta and him being a Prince is that without the things he was given and entitled to in his youth, he was just a bully under Freiza. His ego and his allowance of him being a prince convinced him that royalty was nothing more than the strength you have to dominate and him being beneath Freiza reinforced that notion. When he finally lost to Goku, he was confused that his lineage wasn't enough for him to get the job done. When he was on earth, he wound up following in Goku's footsteps. He didn't like it, but he refused to remain merely a follower. His experience with Future and Chibi Trunks, his relationship with Bulma all brought him to the moment where he could become a stronger Saiyan from the moment he humbled himself watching Goku fight Kid Buu.
Being a Prince means more than just being strong, and honestly I'd say Vegeta has probably come close to the end of his path as a Prince when he's truly showing that he's fit to be a king. Even if that's just a fantasy in the DB universe, Vegeta really has come a long way showing the audience everything it means to not only be a prince... but a true... *true* Saiyan.

Personally i think it'd be good (and incredibly satisfying) for Goku's development if he was training with vegeta, started acting stupid, and drops his guard against an annoyed vegeta. Because of this, he gets the living daylight beaten out of him by vegeta. Then vegeta can call goku out on how much of a dumbass he is, and remind him that if he keeps acting this way, one day he could actually lose the people he holds dear, like he did in black's timeline. This could lead to some actual character development for goku (for the first time in like 25 years) as well as vegeta, being the selfless one of the two. And lets face it, seeing vegeta pound goku within an inch of his life would just

I think Goku doesn't need much change, his character doesn't require that much growth because his life has been relatively peaceful and good. He likes to train, fight and eat. Vegeta on the other hand, has had many changes in his life, from being a spoiled prince, to being a prisoner of Freeza, to being his lackey, to having nowhere to go, to being obsessed with Goku, to being a dad, to falling in love and becoming a family man. Vegeta is constantly choosing to be a better person, while Goku just needed brain damage to be one. That makes Vegeta a better character than Goku in my eyes.

Vegeta's character development is one of my favorite things about Dragon Ball. Seeing how far he's come from being a villain to a hero.
Super gives him moments that I wanted to see more of in Z; and that's spending time with his family like in episode 2.
Also him pulling a Piccolo and taking a blast for Future Trunks.

Super is like Toriyama and Toei looked back on all of dragon ball and its flaws and worked to repair them. They saw what was good and what was bad. The references are endless. Vegeta is redeemed every episode and Goku is showing a side that was ignored but ever present from the beginning. I feel like super is a lot more mature than db and dbz were in the past.
I love it. Sure, they dont get everything right and a lot of it is..... bad but a lot of it is still very nice.

Honestly, I'm glad Vegeta's character and development has progressed, even after that final moment of compassion for his son in early Buu saga, and acceptance in the final conflict with Kid Buu. He's developed so much, since the only times we got to see him in GT was him with a MOOSE-TACHE and driving a car in the Dragonball Galactic Search arc, and showing up at the final battle with Omega in the Shadow Dragons arc. Good on ya Geets!

At first I didn't like Vegeta that much in Z , but later on mainly in the Buu saga he had grown on me. Then Super came along and now he's one of my favorite character in Dragonball! His character progress so well throughout the series and in Super you get to see his other emotions besides just standing there frowning. Always go out on his own, training on his own, and the "I will surpass Kakarot. Here in Super, you see him with his family (cared for them), actually trained with his rival than by himself, and on top of that actually show qualities of being a prince.

While I do see the correlation with that slouching stance and the advice Whis has offered him... that stance still just looks wrong in my eyes... there are legitimate fighting stances which convey a relaxed demeanor but that stance just screams to me "Easier to draw" for the animators. Which is fine... it does fulfill that story arc but really it's there as a crutch.

Haha I love this video. Vegeta's growth has been my favorite part of the series. In super whenever he gets angry I just think "yeah okay vegeta stop being grumpy"
He is an incredible amount like my dad. My dad is a damn grump a LOT of the time and most of my childhood but like, he has an incredibly difficult life and he no matter what always loved his family and took care of us, so i started to make it kinda comical. I realized that just a few months ago why I like vegeta so much actually, its the familiarity.

I haven't watched the whole video but my theory is vegeta might, mighhhht be stronger than goku, because in dbz, goku had to use kaioken to beat vegeta. And as u see in super, vegeta was training with whis before goku, so it could be since vegeta was training before he absorbed that god ki as well maybe because he was able to turn ssgss, and when why's said it seemed the right time to train goku, it means that since Vegeta wanted to surpass goku, he probably wanted vegeta and goku to be tied. Well just my theory perhaps but yeah this is what I think.

I actually like the more comical Goku, as it gives him more character than just the simpleton hero he was in Z, always wise and knowing the right thing to do. Now, he's flawed, and these flaws have caused him to do the wrong things somehow, which they've never acknowledged in Z. But he's still Goku. I loved his sparring match with Trunks, adapting to the fight, beating Trunks easily but then going down to offer him a helping hand to get up. That's Goku. His fights in the tournament were great too. I love how all the fights against Frost reveal the characters of Goku, Piccolo and Vegeta. Against Goku, Frost portrays himself as a likeminded hero and plays on Goku's morality to keep him off guard; Piccolo is strategic, cunning and therefore Frost plays the same games; but Vegeta is ruthless and pragmatic and does not take shit.
