- With the Dragon Ball Super movie (DB Movie 20) coming in December, it's time to look at past movie villains and see what made them. Are there specific categories of characters that future anatagonists might fall into? From Garlic Jr to Janemba, we are rating the DBZ Movie Villains sans Beerus and Broly (except Bio Broly) because the other guys need a chance to shine!

Zamasu and his arc is basically Cell.

I like Bojack! He took a punch from a Ghost! Then was killed by a Powered up Gohan. So he died very confused!
I think part of the problem people have with Broly is that people are forgetting Broly is only half of the villian in his original movie: From a narrative perspective, the villain is both Broly and Paragus as a pair. With that in mind, they both become far more interesting: It's a father manipulating his son, who is the legendary super saiyan, into orchestrating his misplaced revenge on the saiyan royal bloodline, and it also ties into Freeza's destruction of planet Vegeta.. That's actually probably THE most interesting and fleshed out backstories and character motivations of any of the movie villains.

Paragus was a prettu damn good villain in hindsight.
And in the Japanese version, Paragas says Broli's insanity is because of his huge power, and that Goku was reawakening that side of him (unless the subs and Dokkan Battle are wrong...) So Broli's more like Goku if anything - a Saiyan that loves fighting for its own sake and gets riled up by strong guys. Difference is, Broli's cruel and sadistic.
I do kind of wish they didn't choose to include the "Kakarot crying" plot point. Regardless of whether you think it still works with the stronger parts of Broly's story or not, it still basically boils down to being an excuse to make the conflict more about Goku than it needed to be.
When you realize Masako is one of the most powerful people in the world.... he can make Zamasu cry! Lol xD

My favorite is Janemba. Janemba, of course, was similar to Majin Buu. A fat cheerful first form, and a more serious and evil second form. But what causes Janemba to take it for me, was his abilities. This guy, messes with dimensions. Whether he's turning things into jelly beans, punching you from 500ft away, or absorbing your ki blasts into a dimensional hole and shooting it back at you, his abilities make fighting him much more interesting. And, there's his power. Goku said he could have beaten Fat Buu and Kid Buu as Super Saiyan 3. Well, Super Janemba took Super Saiyan 3 Goku to school, and burned the school down.

@@prdz653 I strongly agree. Janemba was a very flat and boring character and the movie showed nothing plot wise. The only minorly interesting thing was seeing Vegita reflect on being dead. It would be difficult for someone to convince me to watch that movie again. Might I suggest Wrath of the Dragon or Bojack to anyone?

I love Bojack and his crews classic pirate like attire. It's a shame they didn't give him or any of his goons a shred of personality. They look cool tho. But you'll have to look into credits or the wiki to find out the goons' names.
I like the idea of a space pirate. I wish Bojack was feared throughout the galaxy as well. Hell, he was stronger than Frieza.

Dragonball Xenoverse 2 had a mission where you ended up fighting Golden Freeza and Meta Cooler and
Gold Freeza and Silver Cooler are a good pair.

Cooler is my favorite DBZ movie villain, and he could easily be made canon in the main series.
To be honest, I like Cooler a lot more than Frieza.

Super Android 13 was interesting, Broly was at least intimidating, Bojack was alright, the others aren't very memorable.
Beerus doesn't count as a villain and Frieza was just reused.
Lord Omega Broly may have been cliche and boring, but you can’t really say he’s not memorable. He’s one of the most popular DB characters canon or not.

For me personally, I really liked Bojack, he was the first villain to really make me feel like all hope was lost and they were gonna lose, plus the guy is badass

If we talking main movie villains aka the 13 original films not including the specials and limiting the horrible sequels of Cooler and Broly more so focusing on their original dbz uncanon movies since canon villains like beerus aren't fair, heres my list, i think you will find it pretty accurate as their are really only 12 main villains of the 13 films when you look at it and 2 of them are paired with the real threat and im comparing them as characters their ideals motivations backstory and plot in their films not just their powers and strength or coolness factor otherwise my last place would be top 3 for sure.
10. Janemba and Janempa- Just so bland and buu copies its embarrassing cause they can't even talk.
9. Hirudegarn and Hoi - Their more of a duo of one being strong but cant talk and the other being weak and pointless.
8. Android 13- So bland without geros motivation behind him hes nothing when he transforms into blue hulk.
7. Lord Slug- Cause hes just king piccolo not interesting seen it before next.
6. Bojack- Cause hes so bland but hes next level douche broly jr that I kinda respect him
5. Broly- Has an okay backstory but hes pretty shitty and bland and his hatred of goku is so weird cause he should hate vegeta way more but okay? he is menacing though with his speeches in the dub for the first film so I give credit to where its due but his other 2 films ruined him.
4. Turles- Lets be real heres hes just goku and vegeta combined so raditz or bardock and his design is so lazy its evil goku and he doesn't do much cause most of his film isn't even centered on him
3. Dr. Wheelo and Kochin- Sure their evil scientist stereotypes but this was back before that became a trend and I swear the androids and gero idea was inspired from them.
2. Cooler- Hes more badass freeza without the snark but still fun and its not bad to be the older bro of the best villain and still bring something new to the table. He feels like a different older brother form.
1. Garlic jr.- Mostly cause hes original its like if you took pilaf and piccolo jr and made them interesting villains in one. Hes pretty cool got a great motivation and wished for immortality.
Not in the Malaysian dub he isn't.

I would also take design into consideration-that's why even though Cooler, Janemba, Broly, Hirudagon, and Turles are fairly bland in terms of personalities, they have a lot of appeal simply through Toriyama's excellent character design. That's probably one of the reasons Biobroly is so hated and why Bojack is underrated. Now, DBS has had some great character designs (cheer up Zamas, that's one point for you) , and some lackluster ones, so we may or may not get some great visuals as well.

I feel like people are oversimplifying Broly way too much due to his motivation and repeated utterance of "Kakarot". He actually has some of the best lines in the DBZ movies that really showcase his psychotic personality. Don't know how accurate the translations are, but some of my faves include:
Broly: "Kakarot, I choose you to be the first of my victims!"
Vegeta: "I am the ruler of all Saiyans!"
Broly: "Then do your best to make me kneel before you!"
Goku: "Hey, how about giving us a handicap?"
Broly: "What's a handicap?"
Broly: "Kakarot, how much do you love your son?"
Piccolo: "Do as you like, you freak!"
Broly: "A freak? No, I'm the devil!"
jp3813 This, it goes right over people's heads. Many people think his an actual simpleton.
+Cloke100 It doesn't help that Kale's vocabulary gets reduced to "Son Goku" in her LSSJ form.
The thing is that Broly's vocabulary only went down in his second movie. The only thing he said besides Kakarot was a threat to Gohan right before the final beam struggle.
In his original movie he WAS quite sadistic. Although, if you're going to take about awesome Broly lines, I think using the english version of the dub works better.

turles is my favorite villain because of xenoverse 2, i loved his politeness, it was so off putting for a saiyan, also his main goal is to eat some fruit and thats hilarious
I love that this wasn't a regular numbered list! It was interesting to think of the villains this way instead. Also, Masako, I'd love to hear your reviews of these movies or some original Dragon Ball movies/arcs.
I would argue that Garlic Jr. is a sort of re-hash of Piccolo.
I would say he is more linked to Kami, since he and Jr's father fought for position of Earth's Guardian.
Cooler is one of the only movie villains that can be considered canon. Him, Bojack and MAYBE Broly....
....but just the first movie Broly.
Also, when I say CONSIDERED AS CANON, I mean to say that I he doesn't have any restrictions like Janemba, Turles or Slug.
Yeah, I'd say it'd be easy to say that at least two of them (Bojack might have some restrictions) could easily be considered canon. With Cooler, it's easy to believe that King Cold would have more than just one child, he is a king after all, having multiple children to ensure the continuation of their empire is kind of what they do. As for Broly, Super basically all but confirmed he existed with the inclusion of Kale, and since Universe 6 and 7 are copies of each, with each one having alternate versions of the same thing, Universe 6 having Kale being the Legendary Super Saiyan, and also looking like a female Broly to boot, basically all but confirms that Broly exists somewhere in Universe 7, whether the Broly movies are canon or not is a completely different question. Hell, the villain of the next movie could very well be a redesigned Broly for all we know.
He didn't go SSJ2 until Cell stepped on 16. Plus, in his fight against Cell, everything was put on HIS shoulders, not on Goku's.

Personally I thought Bojack was a really boring and generic villain. He had some cool things about him, but not many in my opinion. I do think he could be canon, though.

Neat video, also agreed that Bojack and the Galaxy Soldiers were neat with really solid designs. Also I love Cooler and how coolly, pragmatic and ruthless he is and his own soldiers can expect his help and he gets on with them fairly well.

He’s got something going already about how this new enemy ruled over a few universes and was erased by Zeno, but when he came back from 17’s wish, he decided to conquer all of the universes and just so happened to confront Goku.

I'm genuinely interested to see how life for the Saiyans would be if they all survived after the saga. How would they interact with one another? Would they have teamed up against Frieza as a way to avenge the fallen Saiyans? How will they live on Earth? How will some events turn out if they were there to assist or to screw things up?

fav movies villains? the ones with Turles and Garlick Jr.,
Turles movie because he was portrayed as real evil Goku, as a saiyan who didnt got amnesia when he was a baby, he used technology that Vegeta, Raditz and Nappa used, he was going around conquering planets in order to get stronger, (and not just someone who stole Goku body and decided to become god above gods)
and Garlick Jr. because i started from original DB and his story worked so well into history of dragon world that he might as well be cannon, just the end of him was...stupid.

Out of all of the movie villians, Cooler is my favorite. I think this new villian could be any of the categories of movie villians
I would like a video where you analyze and review the Garlic Jr. saga, the pros and cons. I know a lot of people hate the arc, but I liked it, and I thought it did some neat things, like doing a little expansion with the Kami predecessors, the Makyo Star, making it believable that Piccolo is weakened so that Garlic Jr. can take him on, giving Krillin more action (and a super hot girlfriend before No. 18 appears), zombified friends, and even giving Chi Chi some cool moments (the "Kaio-Ken" power up and her attacking Gohan). Also I think the Faulconer score for this saga was fantastic, especially Garlic Jr.'s theme and the Demon Mist theme.
I would love to see you do a review of the saga ad what you think of it.
OUT of all the movie baddies ... Bo Jack is my favorite, they had something special with him but like always they DROP the ball, they could had made 2-3 movie series with this dude.

And then Toriyama goes out and says not only did King Cold only birth Frieza, but no one else exists with Frieza or Cold's power so not only can Cooler not exist, but no member of a hypothetical Frieza race that has their level of power, or is evil, or even their transformations.
The Toriyama version of the Frieza race is so much better than the fan and game ideas. It'd be neat to see you do a video on that, looking over Toriyama's wording and exploring the idea of a Frieza race that isn't full of OP warriors and isn't evil who doesn't transform like Frieza but maybe still has their own Golden form like a Super Saiyan form. It's a very interesting topic I think.
Really glad I'm not the only one who likes Turles. He's genuinely one of my favourite DBZ characters in general

I honestly liked the reason for the Cooler movie. He (Cooler) was just there due to his sense of honor and curiosity over the apparent "death" of his brother.
So, I knew it wasn't a full movie, but I'd have loved to see you talk about Hatchiyak.
What if Zamasu turned good? Less of him completely giving up his quest for justice, and more his sense of justice became more refined.
I saw this really cool thing on seeing that broly developed a mental disorder from broly's sleepless nights haunted in the night only by gokus cries causing him to become insane instead of just not liking crying goku
suggestion for the next db discussion- kaiju fight Z, janemba, harudigarn, and bio broly in a what if vs fight, who would win? each starting off in their respective giant and thus actual kaiju like forms, so for the first 2 their "base" form, and bio broly in his giant "form"
Personnally, I enjoyed a lot Metal Cooler for multiple reasons :
- His design is a very smart mix up between Freeza and Cell, the 2 best ultimated Dragon Ball villains of all times.
- He also looks like a bit like Hit, which is just more cool than it already looks when you think about it.
- He was the first movie villain to handle super saiyans on his own and break the legend meant to be invincible.
- He was the very first one to offer us the first Goku & Vegeta team up together and just for that he's my favorite so far.
- He's the one Goku admited he couldn't have taken care of all by himself and assumed he defeated him thanks to Vegeta.
- The plot twist in his movie was when Goku & Vegeta struggled to destroy him but only to realise it was a single replica.
- Piccolo was still a badass himself too in this movie at this time unlike all the others after the one with Bojack.

I find the crying Zamasu joke funnier than it actually is.
I was actually just talking about this with a friend. I feel like if any of these were to be made cannon, it should have been the first Cooler Movie. It fit quite nicely in the cannon, and it would've added an interesting dynamic down the line--considering how prevalent Frieza's been in DBS.

I honestly like the majority of the movie villians, but if i had to pick a favorite it would probably be Janemba, mainly because i really like his movie and powers, but also because in the plot of a DBZ game he and kid buu can understand what each other is saying and actually become friends of all things.
It's funny reading these comments now that everybody has seen DBS Broly.
Sort of rewatching the DBZ movies lately but mostly to watch the Big Green versions. Dr. Wheelo's Big Green rendition is hilarious, and yeah I picked up rather easily the Turles/Goku Black similarities...it's sort of weird they are taking ideas like that and Broly and making them continuity with the Super anime.

I like the Garlic Jr. Saga because it at least gave us some material for the next saga, also because in the manga they don't really do, and it really just Goku and Vegeta fighting in that saga,
YES! Fusion Reborn is definitely the best DBZ movie out of the originals.
My opinion on the DBZ movie villains:
1. Garlic Jr. - Instead of the typical "Goku saving the day at the end", the creators decided for Gohan to be the hero (since he was noted to have bottomless potential).
2. Dr. Wheelo - Now thinking on it, he was chronologically the first to show interest in taking Goku's body, but wasn't successful like Ginyu (temporarily) and Zamasu.
3. Turles - I used to love the mystery as to why he resembles Goku, until Xenoverse 2 debunked any relationship between them. I also like the fight between him and the Crusher Corps. against Goku and the Z-Fighters in the movie.
4. Lord Slug - My only thought was the first time Piccolo battles against his own kind (since we never really see Namekians square off against each-other). I think that this fact carried into the future (i.e. him and Gohan vs Universe 6 Namekians).
5. Cooler - Cooler looked so awesome in his final form. I feel that the Metal Cooler aspect obviously derived from Mecha Frieza, he was tough to the point that both SSJ's Goku and Vegeta struggled a single copy (let alone the main Cooler).
6. Android 13 - I distinguished his trucker-accent and the way he handled the Z-Fighters: punching Goku in the testicles, slamming Vegeta into the snow and breaking his back, causing Trunks' sword snap in two upon impact before blasting him in the face, blasting Piccolo into the ice and stepping on his face.
7. Broly - Loved the character and his story was very moving and how he just toys around with Goku, Gohan, Trunks, Piccolo, and Vegeta (whom was scared of him). I didn't blame his father Paragus for placing him under mind-control. The first Broly movie was and will always be the best in my opinion.
8. Bojack - Power-wise, he's just another Cell. Other than that, I liked how him and Galaxy Soldiers use gang-warfare tactics to corner the Z-Fighters (personally, i think things could have been different if the Z-Warriors had fully assembled and fought together).
9. Bio-Broly - I never cared for this character (it just didn't captured the feel as the character himself and the Broly trilogy started to go downhill after the first one anyway).
10. Janemba - I like Janemba, he has that cool ability to distort time-space (allowing other villains to escape from hell) and had used a sick-looking sword.
11. Hirudegarn - Meh (while i understand that his mist powers is used a a defensive maneuver to compensate for his huge body), i felt that it was a unfair gimmick that makes him a surprisingly tricky force to be reckoned with.
dr. wheelo, hirudegarne, janemba, i honestly wouldn't mind these 3 movies being cannon, they make sense
As a Dragon Ball fan, I admittedly haven't seen a lot of the movies. Never bought the VHS, and I always missed them on TV. Toonami would always play Tree of Might and Dead Zone, so I remember those the most. I liked Bojack, Cooler's Revenge, and surprisingly Broly's Second Coming (better than the first one IMO). I haven't seen World's Strongest, Android 13, Return of Cooler, Bio-Broly, or Wrath of the Dragon. I should get on that.
Janemba is my favorite villain, but Wrath of the dragon is my favorite movie. Tapion and Trunks becoming brothers, trying to contain a world destroying monster created by a genocidal race of aliens, it was the best. The only thing I didnt like so much was how Goku stole the victory from Trunks there at the end for no reason.
I've actually been preparing a thesis to state that every single arc of Dragon Ball Super incorporates recycled material from Dragon Ball Z's filler material - which includes filler-arcs and movies.
First off, it starts off based on a movie itself with Battle of Gods.
Then goes on to cover another movie...which in and of itself was a retread of Cooler's Revenge, but on a bigger budget.
Hit in a lot of ways is a modern-day Pikkon. And Cabba is practically a reskin of Tarble.
Goku Black and Zamasu are a mixture of Turles, Wheelo/Ginyu, and Garlic Jr. - we've got an Evil Goku, who turns out to have his body stolen by someone evil, and an evil person wishing for Immortality.
And do I even NEED to mention Kale?
My favorite villain is Dr. Wheelo, because DBZA.
Garlic Jr., Bojack and Janemba all had some serious potential, which make their movies a lot of fun to go back to. In Garlic's case he was pretty well-realized as is.
What I find funny about the movie villians is that most (especially Cooler) get way more personality in different properties. Turles doesn't care who you are, if you want to join him, he allows it. He'll even share the fruit of the tree of might with you. He's not purely evil, he just doesn't care about the planet that goes to waste for more power - something a low class saiyan like him loves to achieve to say "screw you" to the class system.
Lord Slug sadly doesn't get that much. He likes to fight and being young.
Cooler, my sweet baby, my favorite dragonball character of them all... I know I have rose-tinted glasses when I look at him, but something about the fact that the scariest emperor of the entire universe, someone who dominanted entire star systems with his brutal might, has a brother who is gunning for you and won't leave until you are dead? Now that stuff is scary. He's more serious and wants to get the job done, even if he falls for the same crap Freeza does. Also the fact that Cooler's final form is clearly inspired by the Predator really helps with the analogy: he's hunting for you and he won't rest until you are dead.
Meanwhile, the androids really get shafted. I guess nobody really has a softspot for them.
Bojack is also weird because I don't know anyone who finds him interesting, yet he pops up everywhere. He does look nothing like a dragonball character at all and him and his crew have weird, but interesting powers. I guess writing extra stuff for a space pirate is just easy to do.
Janemba is nothing. At all. He is a fightscene, basically.
Crying Zamasu is my new favorite meme.
My favorite movie villain is Cooler with Turles at a close second.
Cooler for being more level-headed than his brother and not executing his henchmen for no reason, I feel those traits make him a better leader than Frieza. Of course there’s his threatening final form as well.
Turles I liked for being a more straighter example of an evil Goku, his unique method of powering up, and for destroying a Spirit Bomb (a very weak Spirit Bomb, but still). He truly seemed like a threat that could wipe out the Z-Fighters.

Willo and Ginyu stole goku's body before it was cool. Turles was goku black before it was cool.
Bojack "one of the most interesting and detailed characters since the original Dragon Ball series" who actually fits into the canon of Dragon Ball Z without issue...yet he never even got an honourable mention in TFS's DBcember Top 25 Villains. Lord Slug did. Lord Bloody Slug.

Garlic Jr all the way. No contest. Only villain to successfully wish for immortality. Dead Zone movie was pretty much my most favorite DBZ film ever. And hey i actually loved Garlic Jr’s saga
jANEMBA is my favourite because of his fighting style in the games and the movie, plus the Gogeta moment was legendary
I only recently noticed that Tapion's clothes are quite similar to those that the Supreme Kai wear.
Real talk, I think wrath of the Dragon is one of my favorites because of the dragon fist. That thing rustled my jimmies as a kid.
