I hate the idea that saiyans no longer have tails as a distinguishing feature, I always thought it was one of the few things that distinguished them as a race rather than just being a strong human with black hair.
ICGvids I think that the Black hair is the least dominant color (look trunks) in there so that isn’t a feature to grap on to which makes them really just strong humans.
And then it became all about making their hair different with transformations. That's one of the few things I liked about SSJ 4, it actually remembered the primate trait of a saiyan.

I've always wished they kept their tails (goku and vegeta). It's the only the thing that differentiates them from earthlings and an important characteristic for saiyans.
Well, Simpsons Syndrome is even more common for animated series in general. And Pokemon is also far more than just its anime, so it would make sense that they'd keep the same "trainer mascot".
He probably should have said "It's common for SHONEN anime to have time skips..." since, yea, they do. Although Pokémon's far from the only culprit. Doaremon has had about 2 years pass during its 30+ year run, and in a recent episode of Detective Conan, Ran/Rachel states that it's been about a year since the show started (they're closing in on 900 episodes). Plus other long-runners like Shin-chan and Sazae-san.
Not really. Best Wishes stated flat-out that Ash was still 10 (in both the Japanese and English versions). XY drew him leaner and taller to make it look like he aged, but then Sun & Moon de-aged him again. He'll probably get another age-lift whenever the Gen 8 anime starts.
I think we're okay without them, but I do feel like there was some wasted potential there. Vegeta made a major introduction to the idea of the Ozaru; That it can be CONTROLLED. Part of what made Vegeta so terrifying when he transformed is that he didn't go on a berserking rampage; he was still a cool, level-headed, ruthless fighter. In addition, say what you want about GT, but SSJ4 is still a cool concept and makes logical sense.

I like the idea of a tail, if it allows a Saiyan to go into Oozaru Form, then it must somehow increase their energy. In Oozaru Form, Saiyans are far superior than base-form. GT had a good idea in brining back Goku's tail. If Goku had a tail now, I would assume he would be able to push his energy far higher. I'd enjoy seeing it return.
I remember watching the first World Martial Arts Tournament a few weeks ago. Goku LITERALLY stated [when he grew his tail back] that he "always WAS stronger" with his tail. So yee, I sub to this. Tails make their base stronger, and give them more potential.
SSJ 4, in general, is one of the few things generally considered good in GT. Instead of just focusing on the hair, it actually paid tribute to the primate aspects of a saiyan. It felt more fitting.

Since I dislike the idea of aliens looking exactly like Humans I really like the tails. It's something that sets Saiyans apart from Humans. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people didn't even know Goku was an alien. They'd just assume Super Saiyan was some weird name or something.
In general I'd agree. However, I want to point out that, based on some of the soldiers in Frieza's army, there are apparently a LOT of alien races that look just like humans. As people have pointed out Recoome would have no trouble passing for one (though there is some evidence that others of his race may not have his skin tone.) But generally I'd agree. The same way they'd assume Piccolo is some sort of demon, as opposed to another alien. And the fact that there are humans (or mostly humans) walking around with third eyes and dead white skin (Chaotzu is supposed to be a human, right?) leads me to think that a whole LOT of aliens could fit in inconspicuously.

I always thought tails were so cool back in the day, heridatary trait more than not it seems, though. We can also see this as a trait being so irrelevant it has dwindled away over time, thinking of it as evolution for the better and that is why new Saiyans don't have it? This is correct, it was mentioned as a possible candidate for the tournament and also in the battle of the gods movie, when they were looking an additional saiyan. So he is technically as canon, as he gets.
I don't know if Toriyama is a good writer or not. Forgetting/not caring about things is his biggest crutch, and it's worse with age. He's definitely a good artist, but as a writer I'm not really sure
vincenzo bauman Akira actually clarified that he did not forget, he lacked the desire to continue drawing the tails. and if you've read or heard his other interviews you'd understand that some of the things he's done for the manga and anime were done at the behest of editors. +Austin Solomon: True, but there are many things in Dragon Ball (and his other works) that Toriyama has admitted to forgetting. Like when he forgot Launch existed or that Cell's nucleus should've been destroyed when Goku blew his top half off. Toriyama is getting up the years and he has written many stories each with their own set of rules, so I can see how things would slip his mind, but he should really have people doublecheck stuff for him
no one adheres to a strict canon without changing something. And he doesn't not care, he just moves on from something when it's no longer useful. Except a work that was written as a whole might be internally consistent but an expanded work will always have retcons, and unknown backstory.

I'm okay without the tails, BUT I would love to see Bra have a tail as a baby before they remove it. It might be small, but it would elevate Super even more because it'll give them a chance to show us that, yes, tails are still a thing, but the characters are smart enough to get rid of them to avoid accidents.

Because Vegeta wasn't really around for Trunks birth or infant phase, I could totally see Bulma having his tail removed right from the start. But with Vegeta around for Bra's birth (hopefully), it would be a great time for him and Bulma to have a bit of a clash over removing Bra's. Also good point to throw in an aside as to why Vegeta never got his back or put effort into doing so. Personally I think there are some be super cute moments that could be had if Bra kept a tail. And in a time skip section for her and Vegeta to have a father daughter bonding time as fully sapient great apes. Also artistically it'd likely be easier to hand wave arranging a tail under a dress than sticking out the back of pants. Including curling it up and hiding it. Such as wrapping it around the upper thigh with enough slack for full leg movement, just a hint of fuzzy brown around one leg.
MercuryAlphaInc exactly! that's been super's problem for awhile, not being lore consistent. it may seem like a small thing but to those invested into the series on a narrative front its very big. in reality, vegeta would not want his heir to have their tail removed at all. with trunks you can argue he wasn't there much at all and bulma got it cut off but with him being so involved I don't think he would get it cut off at all. it would be a reason why trunks and goten couldn't go to the tournament because they had to look after bra in case of full moons. a super saiyan with a tail is an insane asset anyways. that would boost an average super saiyan's output to ssj3 levels without stamina drain. an ssb with a tail? shit that would potent. Her keeping her tail would also show the shows commitment to have bra actually fight.

Bringing tails back in GT was a brilliant move from a Narrative point of view. And it ultimately goes to show how inadequately Goku has been handled over the entirety of Dragon Ball, and the vast untapped potential for story-telling elements and character development his tail represents. Think about what happened in GT - Goku having his tail back allowed him to reach a new, nigh unobtainable form, never thought possible; the absolute peak or even perhaps perfection of the Super Saiyan Form. And how did this transformation happen? Well for starters, Goku had to become a Super Oozaru - Yes, I truly believe Golden Oozaru is just a Great Ape in Super Saiyan Form, get over it. And after going on a little rampage, when Goku almost hurts Pan, he suddenly regains consciousness and takes complete control over his Great Ape form. In a sense, he tamed Oozaru, allowing both the rational Saiyan portion of his brain, and the raw brutality and power of the Oozaru's body to become one. In essence, the secret to attaining Super Saiyan 4, is that you have to reach a complete harmony between your two selves. You have to reconcile your Oozaru self, with your humanoid Saiyan form. Only then, when that peace is attained, and the war within your mind and body is ended, can the two forms truly become one, and the ultimate form is reached. This took an idea that was a founding part of Goku's character, that hadn't been seen for years, and made it relevant again. It sort of represents coming full circle. Everyone was afraid of Goku having a tail as a kid, because they were worried - and rightly so - that whenever the moon appeared, he would become the Oozaru and wreck everything in sight. So they of course, got rid of it whenever they could - even going as far as to destroy the moon. (speaking of which, is it ever brought back after Piccolo destroys it?) However, years later, it has now become a part of Goku that he hasn't had to face or deal with in a long time, and now it's back with a vengeance. Resulting in a more powerful golden form and a nigh-unstoppable rampage. But Goku had to suffer through that in order to fully master not only the Super Saiyan ability, but also who he was as a Saiyan Warrior and as a Person. So why did I say that this represents how poorly Goku was handled? Well it's like what Masako said; Goku as a child didn't have motivation or personality. He just did what he did because it was fun - or he wanted the 4-Star Dragon Ball back. Except there was one sure fire thing, that they COULD'VE implemented that would've immediately justified everything that Goku did by giving him a driving force, and make him much more enjoyable because of the eventual tragic nature. All Goku knows for sure, is that his Grandfather - the man who raised him - was stepped on and squashed by a giant ape Monster called "Oozaru". So...Why not make THAT into Goku's motivation? Make it so that Goku is now obsessed with becoming stronger so that he can one day hunt Oozaru down and avenge his Grandfather's murder. We of course learn the truth at the same time Bulma and the others do, but Goku remains blissfully unaware of the connection he has to Oozaru. Every single time Oozaru appears in the series - he himself mysteriously blacks out - and just barely misses him. So now, Oozaru is without a doubt Goku's white-whale. He's stalking him, wherever he goes; and whenever Oozaru attacks, he knocks Goku out first. Goku cannot stand that anymore; he HAS to find that monster and kill it one day. However, after Roshi destroys the moon, and knowing that Oozaru only comes out during the full moon, Goku then gives up on the hunt, knowing that it's unlikely Oozaru will ever appear again. That is...until that fateful fight with the Saiyan Prince himself, Vegeta... And then Goku learns the truth... Seeing Vegeta transform into Oozaru, fills Goku with such confusion; Vegeta couldn't have been the monster that plagued him all this time...until he realizes that he and Vegeta are actually kin; members of the Saiyan Race...and that must mean that all Saiyans can transform like this...And then it all becomes real, as Goku realizes the truth... All of this time...HE was Oozaru...He was the one who destroyed the Martial Arts Tournament Ring, HE was the one who destroyed Pilaf's palace...and...He was the one who killed his own Grandfather... Something like that SHOULD'VE been emotionally crippling for Goku; as the one thing that motivated him to get stronger all his life, turned out to be for naught, as the only person he was hunting, and seeking to defeat...was himself. (Kind of puts that line that, 'Goku doesn't seek to defeat others; he seeks to defeat himself,' line, into deliciously clever context, doesn't it?) But unfortunately, because Goku's oozaru transformation was never implemented into his character development, the news that he was the reason his grandpa died, barely affects him at all. He just shrugs it off, like - yeah, I did it...that sucks. But nothing I can do about it. (In fact, I think the Pioneer dub, the one I first watched, Goku actually DID think Vegeta was the one who killed Grandpa Gohan.) SO...according to MY head-canon. (Let's just call this a kind of "What-If" discussion) - learning that he is actually the monster that killed his grandfather, Goku rejects even more of his Saiyan heritage than before? It's why he distinguishes himself so much from Raditz, Nappa, and Vegeta; even going as far as to say that he is, "The Saiyan from Earth," - a detail that might not seem important, but further highlights how far-away from the Saiyan Race he sees himself. He has completely rejected the identity of "Kakarot," he is only "Son Goku." It's why when he fights Frieza on Namek, he asks Vegeta for some of his Saiyan Pride; because for the first time, he didn't see the Saiyan Race as the heartless, rampaging monsters he'd believed them to be. He saw them as victims of their own power, taken advantage of by a ruthless tyrant who used them as weapons, and then discarded them when it suited him. Seeing Vegeta cry was the first hint that Goku had, that maybe among Saiyans, he wasn't alone...that someone like Vegeta could feel sadness and regret. But still, I don't think Goku ever truly forgave himself for what happened. And he now recognized the truth danger he would pose if his tail ever came back, or if Gohan, Trunks, Goten or any future generations were allowed to keep theirs. It's something that Goku carried in him for so long; buried deep down - pushing back against the guilt and inner turmoil. He wasn't a murderer - he wasn't a ruthless monster - he wasn't the Saiyan he was born to be. He was better than the Saiyan Race. He could overcome his instinct...And he carried that for the next 20 years, until the events of GT. Now, Goku has been forced rather drastically to face his past - the ONE opponent he could never defeat, the one who was always beyond his Grasp - Kakarot, the Oozaru. The side of his personality that he rejected outright; but now, he was in danger of losing against Baby Vegeta. And I believe, on some deep level, Goku realized that the more he fought against his Oozaru half, the more to gain control, the more wild Oozaru became. But once they both realized they were about to hurt Pan, someone they cared about the most in the world...they finally reached a harmonious union. And thus, Goku attained the pinnacle of Saiyan perfection - "To be at One with yourself, you must be Two; using Heart, not Fist, tame Oozaru. To join together, these parts of you; you will become Legend - Son Goku." Is he Goku? Is he Kakarot? Is he Oozaru? He is ALL of them. And they are united, inside of his body, allowing his power level, body, and mind to reach the highest height of Super Saiyan Evolution. ...Which is why Baby couldn't complete the transformation, even as a Super Oozaru. Baby was simply steeling Vegeta's body and power. And he harbored a deep hatred for all Saiyan kind. No matter what happened, Baby would be forever unable to reconcile the two halves of who he was, because he wasn't even a Saiyan, and wouldn't be if given the chance. Anyway...for those of you who have read this far, I hope you have enjoyed this, and I hope it is thought provoking as well as entertaining. It goes to show just how far you could take a character, if you just use the opportunities you yourself have created.
I mean making Goku be all like I'm gonna stab a giant monkey thing would probably ruin the mood of fun happy go lucky dragon ball hunting that it started as.
It still pissed me off that in xenoverse 2, one of the biggest things people voted for, was for saiyan's to have tails, as an accessory. But did they do it, nope.
About Nappa and Vegeta's tails not being a hindrance to them: I just assumed that they trained their tails to the point where they had overcame that weakness. Remember, Son Goku had done just that by the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, so it isn't unreasonable that two elite-class warriors were capable of the same thing. This really says something about Raditz, though. At least to me, it implies that he didn't train very often, instead coasting on his natural strength to claim victory over his opponents.
+MasakoX What if, Saiyans from Universe 6 remove tails at birth? You remember what happened with Gohan and Goku when they went Oozaru. Not everyone is going to be like Vegeta and able to control it, so they figure its too dangerous to have them, so they just remove them from children after they are born. They are kind of pacifists so that could be an explanation.
When people always complained about Goten and Trunks not having a tail I found it so confusing? Yeah Toriyama said he "forgot" but surely it's easily explainable to say they had it cut off in their infant days? By that point everyone knew that having a tail meant you could go Great Ape form, while that wasn't the case for Gohan. His tail was left alone because neither Goku or Chi-chi knew he could transform until after the Saiyan Saga. I think tails are cool but really now that they're gone, i don't understand why it still bothers people.
Saiyan tails were a unique trait of the race and helped set them aside from humans. A Saiyan without a tail is indistinguishable from a human. Not to mention that, after it was shown that Vegeta could control his Great Ape form, the tails changed from a dangerous hazard to a valuable asset, only to then be completely forgotten about.
TheScabbyRat there's also the fact that goku had to get use to movement without the tail as a child showing it helps with movement. and if you count gt getting his tail back let goku stay in ssj3 so it's a moderate power controler at least.

I'm ok with the DB main saiyans not having tails as we have explanations for each case, but universe 6 saiyans -Cabba- being unaware of tails, considering that from our perspective was one of the main characteristics of the race, bothered the DB fan in me a little. If they even have developed the same fighting stances, they could have had the tail tucked in also at least.
They couldn't be, U6 never left their original planet and moved to Planet Plant or Vegeta. Which means they must never had a rampaging Lssj to destroy their world, which means it explains why they had no lore of Ssjs in the first place.
Black Goku wow, that's kind of a silly reason to cut off one of your appendages. if Oozaru is a problem, wear contacts or sunglasses or something. Once you train it to not be so sensitive, the tail is sorta like a fifth limb to your body.
The only thing that bothered me, tail-wise, is Vegeta's not growing back. Considering the importance he placed on it - and the fact that he himself outright stated that "it will grow back"! - you'd think he would be bothered by its disappearance as well! (Until, of course, the super saiyan bargain sale started and made great apes obsolete...)
Yeah. Also, it's shown in the original Dragon Ball that tails make saiyans stronger, whether they are in base or oozaru form. Also, he had full control of the form.
Yes, I think they should bring back the tails. Without the tail Saiyans are just humans that can transform and aside from that they're just regular humans in terms of appearance. One of the reasons why I like GT is the fact that they gave Goku his tail back and that gave us the greatness that is Super Saiyan 4. I wish Goku had kept his tail as an adult just imagine how he could have utilize that during fights. The explanation that Toriyama gave us as to how Goku's tail was removed permanently does not make sense if you think about it. If Goku had lost the vertebrae at the end of his spine and pelvis that would leave him horribly disfigured and he could barely move let alone fight. I really hate toriyama's method of thinking, getting rid of Goku's tail closed off so many avenues for potential stories. Just imagine Goku being able to control great ape form at will and that could have easily come in handy over the years especially during the entirety of Dragon Ball Z. We could have had Kaiju type battles between multiple great ape Saiyans and most of the enemies they fought on Namek could've been crushed flat with little hassle. Torianna had the idea to bring back the tail for Super Saiyan 3 and in my opinion he really should have. Not to mention Super Saiyan 4 showed us that there is a lot of potential to be had with the return of Saiyan tails. I'm pretty sure that if Goku still had his tail he would be a lot stronger than what he is currently. Why can't the Saiyans grow back their tails from an evolutionary standpoint it doesn't make sense. And if they really have lost them why not wish for new Tails using the Dragon Balls?
I liked the tails. I always thought tails on humanoid characters looked cool as a kid and it's a simple easy way to distinguish a Saiyan from a.... "Regular" earthling. Besides its a reminder of the series routes, being based off of Journey to the West and all. Seeing how the Saiyans are just a planet full of Sun Wukongs, I wouldn't mind future Saiyans having them.
The Mopomi back before he could fly, he used it to get to the lookout from korin's place ( the cat that makes sensu beans). It's still there in dragon ball z and other showings of them going up after that.
I'd like to see Bra being born with a tail in Super and Vegeta fanboying over teaching her how to keep her mind in check during transformation into Oozaru like he did cuz she also has royal blood. But it would ultimatelly prove counterproductive with her being half human baby without Saiyan instincts for combat and too much of a hussle for him so he decides to get rid of her tail just like Trunks'... that'd be cool episode xd
I'd like to see bra born with a tail even if they just remove it later. Maybe have trunks say something like "are you going to rip her tail off like you did mine" just to have a little bit of explanation

honestly, at this point, everything on Dragon Ball can be explained with "Toriyama forgot/didn't cared enough", kinda undermines any semblance of lore that being said, I wish they would do something with the Tails

Yeah, I always wondered why Goten and Trunks didn't have them, of course they could have just been removed at birth. As for Cabba not having one, something I did recently notice about him, it could be possible it's under his belt, or Saiyans in Universe 6 evolved to not have them in comparison to the Universe 7 Saiyans, though most likely the writers just forgot about them.
tails should come back, the tails gave a power boost too which is clearly shown when goku fights monster beast giran, when his tail grew back while struggling to get out of the merry go gum he was able to easily break it.....depending on how it affects power it may actually be useful
Ssj4 was supposed to the be the pinnacle of Saiyan power a mix of both ssj controlled power and oozaru primal power. The golden ape would be the unfinished product it was basically an unstable ssj4

I had read someplace that once a Sayian reaches a certain power level that their tail does not grow back. This was due to the giant ape form becoming a crutch instead of a help after a certain power level.
I always liked the tail, but I can agree. Whenever I tried doing Dragonball fanart, or dragonball z fanart where tails were involved, i could never quite place how to place it. It's like when you draw it out you're so worried about the arms, legs, etc and its posture, then you have the tail and you're like "uhh... how should i curve it?" Either way i really liked GT if anything because of the Tail aspect. And since we have had Universe 6 Saiyans i just thought it'd be cool seeing them with tails. I mean yeah it'd be cool for vegeta and Goku to teach Cabba and Caulifa & Kale (respectively) how better to work it. I guess the main problem would have been oozaru's...but...yeah. xD But I'm not picky. the "Tail" was what made Dragonball and early Z (not to mention GT) so special in my opinion. It was a period of time where the Tail was really important and set the characters in their age.

Speaking of DB influence on the world and other writers, have you ever read a comic book made by Image company and written by Robert Kirkman called Invincible ? I would really like to hear what you think about it.
In the very first issue of the American Shonen Jump magazine back in 2002 or 2003, there was an interview with Toriyama where he used the Genetics explanation to explain why Goten and Trunks don't have tails.
"Today's tale is a tale of tails" is simple to say five times quickly. The "T" sound and shape is a very easy one for the tongue to make; it is the shape that you most commomly use when "starting" notes on wind and brass instruments. Provides a nice, clean articulation and is easy to perform over and over again in rapid succession. Nice alliteration though; always enjoy your opening zingers. luv u Masako
how interesting it would be for super to explore this more in such an advanced stage in the development of saiyains after it ahd been left out for so long. with the introduction of other universe saiyains they could have done so...
i would LOVE for at least one of our saiyans to get a tail. whether goku grows his back, or it could make sense for vegeta since he has his saiyan pride. maybe gohan or one of the other halfies but i feel like it would make goku and or vegeta stand out more
I want the tails back mostly because I want more Oozaru. Probably my #1 question about Saiyans is 'How do they learn to control their Oozaru form?' Does it just get easier as you age, so that it was more of a survival thing for baby Saiyans? Did Planet Vegeta have huge training chambers? Considering what we know about Saiyans, it probably didn't have much to do with emotional attachments. And, even more than any of this, did pre-Freeza-takeover Saiyans have a culture with no real taboo against nudity, since going Oozaru without stretchy armour meant that afterwards, the Saiyan in question would be naked when they transformed back.
Personally, I don't think Goku's tail should come back. It would probably make the Dragon Ball fans who were introduced to the series by DBZ (which is probably quite a large part of the fandom) feel somewhat alienated. But I would love to see some other Saiyan in DBS have a tail and maybe even using it as an extra limb in combat.
I always loved the tails and I wish they never got rid of them, it was the one thing you could use to point out the difference between saiyan and humans that weren't transformations
What really surprised me about Toriyama is that since he was phasing out tails, he didn't consider coming up with a way for the Saiyans to unlock that transformed power in their normal states.
I find it funny how I predicted the thing before watching the video. Problem is with getting rid of tails with the succeeding Saiyans is that you sacrifice setting for convenience.
Actually masako, the pliers weren't 'godly pliers' if I remember correctly. It was the son of the of the green guy in the bottom left hand corner of the picture at 9:45, that transformed into the pair of pliers, kind of what Puar and oolong could do.
Personally, when drawing Dragon Ball characters, I found drawing a Saiyans tail to be a very fun aspect of drawing said character (usually O.C's). The freeness of the tail is just a subtle way of making them stand out in some regard. Especially them using it in battle. Fun dynamic.
Didn't Akira Toriyama also state in another interview that the gene responsible for the saiyans growing their tails was a recessive trait and so half saiyans have 50/50 chance of not getting a tail and Goten and Trunks just never had tails due to them not having the gene for it. ((I think this was his canon way of not having to draw the tails anymore.))
as a genuine fan of SSJ4 form, and not wanting to retcon too much of established DB lore, as well as in response to your other video about Vegeta not learning the kioken. I think it would be cool for Vegeta to be thinking about ways to become more powerful, to ask Bulma for help regrowing his tail, then going through a similar arc of becoming Golden Oozaru -> SSJ4. The could do it more like SSJ4 is peak saiyan physical power, then have him learn proper Ki control to get SSJ4 Blue (dark blue fur, SSB hair)

Well, it's nice to know that at least. I always wondered what would happen if Goku, Vegeta and Gohan got the Dragon Balls together and wished for their tails back. Sure, maybe it wouldn't work all that well for Gohan, since he has a job, but I just wonder if it would make them stronger.

Since they announced the Universe Survival arc, I thought it would be a given there'd be Saiyans from other universes that still had their tails and used Oozaru in their fight.
The tail was the only physical trait that made Saiyajins look different from humans. I think it was a mistake to get rid of it.

I hate the idea that saiyans no longer have tails as a distinguishing feature, I always thought it was one of the few things that distinguished them as a race rather than just being a strong human with black hair.
ICGvids I think that the Black hair is the least dominant color (look trunks) in there so that isn’t a feature to grap on to which makes them really just strong humans.

I think we're okay without them, but I do feel like there was some wasted potential there. Vegeta made a major introduction to the idea of the Ozaru; That it can be CONTROLLED. Part of what made Vegeta so terrifying when he transformed is that he didn't go on a berserking rampage; he was still a cool, level-headed, ruthless fighter. In addition, say what you want about GT, but SSJ4 is still a cool concept and makes logical sense.

I like the idea of a tail, if it allows a Saiyan to go into Oozaru Form, then it must somehow increase their energy. In Oozaru Form, Saiyans are far superior than base-form. GT had a good idea in brining back Goku's tail. If Goku had a tail now, I would assume he would be able to push his energy far higher. I'd enjoy seeing it return.
I remember watching the first World Martial Arts Tournament a few weeks ago. Goku LITERALLY stated [when he grew his tail back] that he "always WAS stronger" with his tail.

SSJ 4, in general, is one of the few things generally considered good in GT. Instead of just focusing on the hair, it actually paid tribute to the primate aspects of a saiyan. It felt more fitting.

In general I'd agree. However, I want to point out that, based on some of the soldiers in Frieza's army, there are apparently a LOT of alien races that look just like humans. As people have pointed out Recoome would have no trouble passing for one (though there is some evidence that others of his race may not have his skin tone.)
But generally I'd agree. The same way they'd assume Piccolo is some sort of demon, as opposed to another alien.
And the fact that there are humans (or mostly humans) walking around with third eyes and dead white skin (Chaotzu is supposed to be a human, right?) leads me to think that a whole LOT of aliens could fit in inconspicuously.

This is correct, it was mentioned as a possible candidate for the tournament and also in the battle of the gods movie, when they were looking an additional saiyan. So he is technically as canon, as he gets.

Like when he forgot Launch existed or that Cell's nucleus should've been destroyed when Goku blew his top half off. Toriyama is getting up the years and he has written many stories each with their own set of rules, so I can see how things would slip his mind, but he should really have people doublecheck stuff for him
He set the foundation for a great series but other people have been shown to create a way better post Buu saga story line.

It's good to see some one tell the tale of tails.
I'm okay without the tails, BUT I would love to see Bra have a tail as a baby before they remove it. It might be small, but it would elevate Super even more because it'll give them a chance to show us that, yes, tails are still a thing, but the characters are smart enough to get rid of them to avoid accidents.
MercuryAlphaInc It would make a great "Lampshade" side story. Because Vegeta wasn't really around for Trunks birth or infant phase, I could totally see Bulma having his tail removed right from the start. But with Vegeta around for Bra's birth (hopefully), it would be a great time for him and Bulma to have a bit of a clash over removing Bra's. Also good point to throw in an aside as to why Vegeta never got his back or put effort into doing so.
Personally I think there are some be super cute moments that could be had if Bra kept a tail. And in a time skip section for her and Vegeta to have a father daughter bonding time as fully sapient great apes. Also artistically it'd likely be easier to hand wave arranging a tail under a dress than sticking out the back of pants. Including curling it up and hiding it. Such as wrapping it around the upper thigh with enough slack for full leg movement, just a hint of fuzzy brown around one leg.

in reality, vegeta would not want his heir to have their tail removed at all. with trunks you can argue he wasn't there much at all and bulma got it cut off but with him being so involved I don't think he would get it cut off at all. it would be a reason why trunks and goten couldn't go to the tournament because they had to look after bra in case of full moons.
a super saiyan with a tail is an insane asset anyways. that would boost an average super saiyan's output to ssj3 levels without stamina drain. an ssb with a tail? shit that would potent. Her keeping her tail would also show the shows commitment to have bra actually fight.

Bringing tails back in GT was a brilliant move from a Narrative point of view. And it ultimately goes to show how inadequately Goku has been handled over the entirety of Dragon Ball, and the vast untapped potential for story-telling elements and character development his tail represents.
Think about what happened in GT - Goku having his tail back allowed him to reach a new, nigh unobtainable form, never thought possible; the absolute peak or even perhaps perfection of the Super Saiyan Form.
And how did this transformation happen? Well for starters, Goku had to become a Super Oozaru - Yes, I truly believe Golden Oozaru is just a Great Ape in Super Saiyan Form, get over it. And after going on a little rampage, when Goku almost hurts Pan, he suddenly regains consciousness and takes complete control over his Great Ape form. In a sense, he tamed Oozaru, allowing both the rational Saiyan portion of his brain, and the raw brutality and power of the Oozaru's body to become one.
In essence, the secret to attaining Super Saiyan 4, is that you have to reach a complete harmony between your two selves. You have to reconcile your Oozaru self, with your humanoid Saiyan form. Only then, when that peace is attained, and the war within your mind and body is ended, can the two forms truly become one, and the ultimate form is reached.
This took an idea that was a founding part of Goku's character, that hadn't been seen for years, and made it relevant again. It sort of represents coming full circle. Everyone was afraid of Goku having a tail as a kid, because they were worried - and rightly so - that whenever the moon appeared, he would become the Oozaru and wreck everything in sight. So they of course, got rid of it whenever they could - even going as far as to destroy the moon. (speaking of which, is it ever brought back after Piccolo destroys it?)
However, years later, it has now become a part of Goku that he hasn't had to face or deal with in a long time, and now it's back with a vengeance. Resulting in a more powerful golden form and a nigh-unstoppable rampage. But Goku had to suffer through that in order to fully master not only the Super Saiyan ability, but also who he was as a Saiyan Warrior and as a Person.
So why did I say that this represents how poorly Goku was handled?
Well it's like what Masako said; Goku as a child didn't have motivation or personality. He just did what he did because it was fun - or he wanted the 4-Star Dragon Ball back. Except there was one sure fire thing, that they COULD'VE implemented that would've immediately justified everything that Goku did by giving him a driving force, and make him much more enjoyable because of the eventual tragic nature.
All Goku knows for sure, is that his Grandfather - the man who raised him - was stepped on and squashed by a giant ape Monster called "Oozaru". So...Why not make THAT into Goku's motivation? Make it so that Goku is now obsessed with becoming stronger so that he can one day hunt Oozaru down and avenge his Grandfather's murder.
We of course learn the truth at the same time Bulma and the others do, but Goku remains blissfully unaware of the connection he has to Oozaru. Every single time Oozaru appears in the series - he himself mysteriously blacks out - and just barely misses him. So now, Oozaru is without a doubt Goku's white-whale. He's stalking him, wherever he goes; and whenever Oozaru attacks, he knocks Goku out first. Goku cannot stand that anymore; he HAS to find that monster and kill it one day.
However, after Roshi destroys the moon, and knowing that Oozaru only comes out during the full moon, Goku then gives up on the hunt, knowing that it's unlikely Oozaru will ever appear again.
That is...until that fateful fight with the Saiyan Prince himself, Vegeta...
And then Goku learns the truth...
Seeing Vegeta transform into Oozaru, fills Goku with such confusion; Vegeta couldn't have been the monster that plagued him all this time...until he realizes that he and Vegeta are actually kin; members of the Saiyan Race...and that must mean that all Saiyans can transform like this...And then it all becomes real, as Goku realizes the truth...
All of this time...HE was Oozaru...He was the one who destroyed the Martial Arts Tournament Ring, HE was the one who destroyed Pilaf's palace...and...He was the one who killed his own Grandfather...
Something like that SHOULD'VE been emotionally crippling for Goku; as the one thing that motivated him to get stronger all his life, turned out to be for naught, as the only person he was hunting, and seeking to defeat...was himself.
(Kind of puts that line that, 'Goku doesn't seek to defeat others; he seeks to defeat himself,' line, into deliciously clever context, doesn't it?)
But unfortunately, because Goku's oozaru transformation was never implemented into his character development, the news that he was the reason his grandpa died, barely affects him at all. He just shrugs it off, like - yeah, I did it...that sucks. But nothing I can do about it.
(In fact, I think the Pioneer dub, the one I first watched, Goku actually DID think Vegeta was the one who killed Grandpa Gohan.)
SO...according to MY head-canon. (Let's just call this a kind of "What-If" discussion) - learning that he is actually the monster that killed his grandfather, Goku rejects even more of his Saiyan heritage than before? It's why he distinguishes himself so much from Raditz, Nappa, and Vegeta; even going as far as to say that he is, "The Saiyan from Earth," - a detail that might not seem important, but further highlights how far-away from the Saiyan Race he sees himself. He has completely rejected the identity of "Kakarot," he is only "Son Goku."
It's why when he fights Frieza on Namek, he asks Vegeta for some of his Saiyan Pride; because for the first time, he didn't see the Saiyan Race as the heartless, rampaging monsters he'd believed them to be. He saw them as victims of their own power, taken advantage of by a ruthless tyrant who used them as weapons, and then discarded them when it suited him. Seeing Vegeta cry was the first hint that Goku had, that maybe among Saiyans, he wasn't alone...that someone like Vegeta could feel sadness and regret.
But still, I don't think Goku ever truly forgave himself for what happened. And he now recognized the truth danger he would pose if his tail ever came back, or if Gohan, Trunks, Goten or any future generations were allowed to keep theirs.
It's something that Goku carried in him for so long; buried deep down - pushing back against the guilt and inner turmoil. He wasn't a murderer - he wasn't a ruthless monster - he wasn't the Saiyan he was born to be. He was better than the Saiyan Race. He could overcome his instinct...And he carried that for the next 20 years, until the events of GT.
Now, Goku has been forced rather drastically to face his past - the ONE opponent he could never defeat, the one who was always beyond his Grasp - Kakarot, the Oozaru.
The side of his personality that he rejected outright; but now, he was in danger of losing against Baby Vegeta. And I believe, on some deep level, Goku realized that the more he fought against his Oozaru half, the more to gain control, the more wild Oozaru became. But once they both realized they were about to hurt Pan, someone they cared about the most in the world...they finally reached a harmonious union.
And thus, Goku attained the pinnacle of Saiyan perfection -
"To be at One with yourself, you must be Two; using Heart, not Fist, tame Oozaru. To join together, these parts of you; you will become Legend - Son Goku."
Is he Goku? Is he Kakarot? Is he Oozaru?
He is ALL of them. And they are united, inside of his body, allowing his power level, body, and mind to reach the highest height of Super Saiyan Evolution.
...Which is why Baby couldn't complete the transformation, even as a Super Oozaru. Baby was simply steeling Vegeta's body and power. And he harbored a deep hatred for all Saiyan kind. No matter what happened, Baby would be forever unable to reconcile the two halves of who he was, because he wasn't even a Saiyan, and wouldn't be if given the chance.
Anyway...for those of you who have read this far, I hope you have enjoyed this, and I hope it is thought provoking as well as entertaining. It goes to show just how far you could take a character, if you just use the opportunities you yourself have created.

About Nappa and Vegeta's tails not being a hindrance to them:
I just assumed that they trained their tails to the point where they had overcame that weakness. Remember, Son Goku had done just that by the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, so it isn't unreasonable that two elite-class warriors were capable of the same thing. This really says something about Raditz, though. At least to me, it implies that he didn't train very often, instead coasting on his natural strength to claim victory over his opponents.

What if, Saiyans from Universe 6 remove tails at birth? You remember what happened with Gohan and Goku when they went Oozaru. Not everyone is going to be like Vegeta and able to control it, so they figure its too dangerous to have them, so they just remove them from children after they are born.
They are kind of pacifists so that could be an explanation.

When people always complained about Goten and Trunks not having a tail I found it so confusing? Yeah Toriyama said he "forgot" but surely it's easily explainable to say they had it cut off in their infant days? By that point everyone knew that having a tail meant you could go Great Ape form, while that wasn't the case for Gohan. His tail was left alone because neither Goku or Chi-chi knew he could transform until after the Saiyan Saga. I think tails are cool but really now that they're gone, i don't understand why it still bothers people.

Saiyan tails were a unique trait of the race and helped set them aside from humans. A Saiyan without a tail is indistinguishable from a human. Not to mention that, after it was shown that Vegeta could control his Great Ape form, the tails changed from a dangerous hazard to a valuable asset, only to then be completely forgotten about.
TheScabbyRat there's also the fact that goku had to get use to movement without the tail as a child showing it helps with movement. and if you count gt getting his tail back let goku stay in ssj3 so it's a moderate power controler at least.
Its a power perspective in my thoughts.

I'm ok with the DB main saiyans not having tails as we have explanations for each case, but universe 6 saiyans -Cabba- being unaware of tails, considering that from our perspective was one of the main characteristics of the race, bothered the DB fan in me a little. If they even have developed the same fighting stances, they could have had the tail tucked in also at least.

They couldn't be, U6 never left their original planet and moved to Planet Plant or Vegeta. Which means they must never had a rampaging Lssj to destroy their world, which means it explains why they had no lore of Ssjs in the first place.
Black Goku wow, that's kind of a silly reason to cut off one of your appendages. if Oozaru is a problem, wear contacts or sunglasses or something. Once you train it to not be so sensitive, the tail is sorta like a fifth limb to your body.
The only thing that bothered me, tail-wise, is Vegeta's not growing back. Considering the importance he placed on it - and the fact that he himself outright stated that "it will grow back"! - you'd think he would be bothered by its disappearance as well!

Yeah. Also, it's shown in the original Dragon Ball that tails make saiyans stronger, whether they are in base or oozaru form. Also, he had full control of the form.

Yes, I think they should bring back the tails. Without the tail Saiyans are just humans that can transform and aside from that they're just regular humans in terms of appearance. One of the reasons why I like GT is the fact that they gave Goku his tail back and that gave us the greatness that is Super Saiyan 4. I wish Goku had kept his tail as an adult just imagine how he could have utilize that during fights. The explanation that Toriyama gave us as to how Goku's tail was removed permanently does not make sense if you think about it. If Goku had lost the vertebrae at the end of his spine and pelvis that would leave him horribly disfigured and he could barely move let alone fight. I really hate toriyama's method of thinking, getting rid of Goku's tail closed off so many avenues for potential stories. Just imagine Goku being able to control great ape form at will and that could have easily come in handy over the years especially during the entirety of Dragon Ball Z. We could have had Kaiju type battles between multiple great ape Saiyans and most of the enemies they fought on Namek could've been crushed flat with little hassle. Torianna had the idea to bring back the tail for Super Saiyan 3 and in my opinion he really should have. Not to mention Super Saiyan 4 showed us that there is a lot of potential to be had with the return of Saiyan tails. I'm pretty sure that if Goku still had his tail he would be a lot stronger than what he is currently. Why can't the Saiyans grow back their tails from an evolutionary standpoint it doesn't make sense. And if they really have lost them why not wish for new Tails using the Dragon Balls?

I liked the tails. I always thought tails on humanoid characters looked cool as a kid and it's a simple easy way to distinguish a Saiyan from a.... "Regular" earthling. Besides its a reminder of the series routes, being based off of Journey to the West and all. Seeing how the Saiyans are just a planet full of Sun Wukongs, I wouldn't mind future Saiyans having them.
Yeah it bothers me that a story based on Sun Wukong doesn't have the iconic monkey features.

The Mopomi back before he could fly, he used it to get to the lookout from korin's place ( the cat that makes sensu beans). It's still there in dragon ball z and other showings of them going up after that.

Tia Blue it is used to connect the lookout to earth otherwise the lookout is in a separate dimension.

Yeah, I always wondered why Goten and Trunks didn't have them, of course they could have just been removed at birth. As for Cabba not having one, something I did recently notice about him, it could be possible it's under his belt, or Saiyans in Universe 6 evolved to not have them in comparison to the Universe 7 Saiyans, though most likely the writers just forgot about them.
tails should come back, the tails gave a power boost too which is clearly shown when goku fights monster beast giran, when his tail grew back while struggling to get out of the merry go gum he was able to easily break it.....depending on how it affects power it may actually be useful

Ssj4 was supposed to the be the pinnacle of Saiyan power a mix of both ssj controlled power and oozaru primal power. The golden ape would be the unfinished product it was basically an unstable ssj4

I had read someplace that once a Sayian reaches a certain power level that their tail does not grow back. This was due to the giant ape form becoming a crutch instead of a help after a certain power level.
I always liked the tail, but I can agree. Whenever I tried doing Dragonball fanart, or dragonball z fanart where tails were involved, i could never quite place how to place it. It's like when you draw it out you're so worried about the arms, legs, etc and its posture, then you have the tail and you're like "uhh... how should i curve it?"
Either way i really liked GT if anything because of the Tail aspect. And since we have had Universe 6 Saiyans i just thought it'd be cool seeing them with tails. I mean yeah it'd be cool for vegeta and Goku to teach Cabba and Caulifa & Kale (respectively) how better to work it.
I guess the main problem would have been oozaru's...but...yeah. xD
But I'm not picky. the "Tail" was what made Dragonball and early Z (not to mention GT) so special in my opinion. It was a period of time where the Tail was really important and set the characters in their age.

In the very first issue of the American Shonen Jump magazine back in 2002 or 2003, there was an interview with Toriyama where he used the Genetics explanation to explain why Goten and Trunks don't have tails.
I want SSJ4 and Golden Ozaru to be canon so badly. Yes GT was bad, but SSJ4 is amazing. SSJ4 is what the Legendary SSJ should be.

The "T" sound and shape is a very easy one for the tongue to make; it is the shape that you most commomly use when "starting" notes on wind and brass instruments. i would LOVE for at least one of our saiyans to get a tail. whether goku grows his back, or it could make sense for vegeta since he has his saiyan pride. maybe gohan or one of the other halfies but i feel like it would make goku and or vegeta stand out more
I want the tails back mostly because I want more Oozaru. Probably my #1 question about Saiyans is 'How do they learn to control their Oozaru form?' Does it just get easier as you age, so that it was more of a survival thing for baby Saiyans? Did Planet Vegeta have huge training chambers? Considering what we know about Saiyans, it probably didn't have much to do with emotional attachments.
And, even more than any of this, did pre-Freeza-takeover Saiyans have a culture with no real taboo against nudity, since going Oozaru without stretchy armour meant that afterwards, the Saiyan in question would be naked when they transformed back.
Personally, I don't think Goku's tail should come back. It would probably make the Dragon Ball fans who were introduced to the series by DBZ (which is probably quite a large part of the fandom) feel somewhat alienated.
But I would love to see some other Saiyan in DBS have a tail and maybe even using it as an extra limb in combat.

What really surprised me about Toriyama is that since he was phasing out tails, he didn't consider coming up with a way for the Saiyans to unlock that transformed power in their normal states.

Actually masako, the pliers weren't 'godly pliers' if I remember correctly. It was the son of the of the green guy in the bottom left hand corner of the picture at 9:45, that transformed into the pair of pliers, kind of what Puar and oolong could do.

Personally, when drawing Dragon Ball characters, I found drawing a Saiyans tail to be a very fun aspect of drawing said character (usually O.C's). The freeness of the tail is just a subtle way of making them stand out in some regard. Especially them using it in battle. Fun dynamic.
Didn't Akira Toriyama also state in another interview that the gene responsible for the saiyans growing their tails was a recessive trait and so half saiyans have 50/50 chance of not getting a tail and Goten and Trunks just never had tails due to them not having the gene for it. ((I think this was his canon way of not having to draw the tails anymore.))
as a genuine fan of SSJ4 form, and not wanting to retcon too much of established DB lore, as well as in response to your other video about Vegeta not learning the kioken. I think it would be cool for Vegeta to be thinking about ways to become more powerful, to ask Bulma for help regrowing his tail, then going through a similar arc of becoming Golden Oozaru -> SSJ4.
The could do it more like SSJ4 is peak saiyan physical power, then have him learn proper Ki control to get SSJ4 Blue (dark blue fur, SSB hair)

Well, it's nice to know that at least. I always wondered what would happen if Goku, Vegeta and Gohan got the Dragon Balls together and wished for their tails back. Sure, maybe it wouldn't work all that well for Gohan, since he has a job, but I just wonder if it would make them stronger.
