“Strange isn’t it” has more context. Robotnik had created a mental link between Sonic and Metal so that Metal could predict Sonic’s actions. After a bit, Sonic figured out that he could sync with Metal and turn the one-way link into a two-way link so that he could now predict Metal’s actions. He then taunts Metal by telling him that they can both predict the other now, with a smug rhetorical question at the end.

I also want to point out that the majority of the Heroes dialogue wasn't proofread and thats why some things like the "were sonic heroes" and amy's marriage proposal is so clunky. In the japanese version team sonic calling themselves that was to make fun of Eggman who suggested they call themselves that. and the marriage proposal was more along the line of Ill impress you enough you'll want to marry me. Also the line where sonic says that shadow was too stubborn to die is actually a callback to japanese SA2 where sonic says that stubbornness is his saving grace.

in defense of “stealing candy from a baby”, the line becomes INCREDIBLY funny when you interpret “this is like stealing candy from a baby” and “which is fine by me” as two UNRELATED phrases and shadow is trying to say “man this is easy! not that im complaining!” but because hes bad at understanding people, shadow phrased it in a way that implies that he thinks stealing from children is okay

given the game is in many places oddly translated, i can absolutely see this being the sort of intended effect of the translation and it was just perfectly distorted by faulty localisation, translation, or just time constraints that made this game what it was in general and the voice lines being what they are.
i had honestly never even thought of this, it wasn't an option i saw in my brain until right now. thanks for playing devil's advocate fr, i think this is a super plausible explanation for why this line could be perceived wrong and not just jarringly edgy. Although, given the jarring edge of the game, I think it probably did have something to do with that too, but it was a sort of perfect disaster that made that particular line so edgy and misinterpreted in how it is remembered.

    • @chaosproject91
      @chaosproject91 7 месяцев назад +36

It bothers me that this possibility wasn't even brought up by anyone in the video. I say "possibility," but that was clearly the intention of the writers. "This is [simile for 'too easy'], which is fine by me." Pretty straightforward. The fact that there's room for ambiguity is hilarious and bad, but they consistently scored this line assuming the "mistake" was the intentional meaning of the line. Other lines got the benefit of context at least some of the time.
They didn't much consider context for "disgusting creatures" either. No one knew they were from space yet, no one knew what they called themselves, at that point in the game they're literally just unknown creatures identifiable by their black scales/skin/exoskeletons/whatever. Of course the line looks horrifying sitting out of context, but what else was Shadow supposed to call them?

"I am horribly inconsistent", nah that is actually a good line imo bc Tails is having a self-reflective crisis and this is a legitimate concern he has about himself that matches up with his performance and character in previous games. I feel like it's questionable to try and make all the games canon on part of Sonic Team, given how inconsistent Tails is and how objectively bad many of them are, but this line works for the context and for Sonic Team's goals. If I am a first-time player and I help Tails on Air Fleet to save the President then the game will “reward” me by sending me to Lava Shelter where I then get shoved into the middle of a jarring Shadow Android plotline. Regardless of how I finish Lava Shelter, the game will give me a Shadow Android ending. This ending only ever makes sense if the player does the neutral Misson for Iron Jungle. There is no connection between saving the president during the black arms invasion and confronting Eggman on the idea of being a robot.
So yeah the stealing candy from a baby line being on the good path can feel like a huge disconnect from the player's motives. Especially since a lot of players will see that cutscene while doing a pure hero playthrough.

The line is trying to say 'this is like taking candy from a baby, which is fine by me.' I.e he's fine with it being easy, not with taking candy from babies. A more proper translation would be 'This is like taking candy from a baby, not that I'm complaining' or maybe 'they're just asking for someone to swipe it with security like this' when you think about it with that meaning in mind it's honestly not even that bad of a line.

When Amy says, "If I had to choose between the world and Sonic, I would choose Sonic!" I take it as though, it's because she KNOWS Sonic. The military did turn on him before, so she knows at times like that she would rather side with him than those who persecute him. If Sonic were to turn out evil or do some really bad shit, she wouldn't even believe it, cuz that's not the Sonic she knows. Hence, "Sonic would never do that!" And she was right, he didn't. For example: After Amy said that, she would say the following:
"Because he is the purest and noblest person I have ever met!"
"So, tell me... Do you really think that killing someone would save the world?"
In this way, Amy's words would have a genuine impact on Silver, in such a way that he himself begins to rethink the action of killing Sonic, as seen in the following cutscene where Silver and Blaze were debating precisely about that killing someone would save the world is morally right or not. Seriously, this would have made Amy has that line well supported, and It would not be left to misinterpretations.

The mountain of handkerchiefs quote will NEVER come off as a bad quote to me. The context and meaning behind it are too good. Sonic’s actions and quote symbolises that she needed time to get over the loss of her implied abusive partner, and a mountain of handkerchiefs would give her all the time she needed to grieve.
Is it cheesy? Yeah. But most Sonic quotes are.

idk, I think gifting someone handkerchiefs is just a bad object to do that with. It would've worked with anything that she could cry on that made her happy symbolically, but handkerchief definitely sends more of a "Cry about it" vibe. Especially since it's more of a Sonic "idk what to wish for, but hey see handkerchiefs would be nice now, huh" wish, which tries to land poetically, but it's still a sonic wish more than it is hers.

I think how people react to this quote depends on how cynical they are and to be frank, how they've been taught to feel about their emotions. People are saying he's saying "go cry about it" like that's a bad thing but HE IS telling her that and it's not a bad thing! It's a really positive message you very rarely hear. Sonic is saying, "Spend as much time as you need grieving." yes is the hanky thing cheesy, yes, but this is SONIC. I think it's really beautiful and I think people seeing it in such a cynical way reflects more on their world view than the line and intent of the scene.

@@casinopolis it's just the delivery that makes people facepalm. Eggman has real character development to have grown a big enough heart to respond "you're right 🙂" instead of just thinking "man what a stupid kid." The way he responds ALMOST sounds like he's patronizing Tails and his moment of immaturity, but given how weird some line deliveries in the SA games are I don't think that was the intent.

Fun Fact: the "Stealing Candy from a Baby" line is another example of poor localization. In the original the literal translation would be something along the lines of "This is ridiculously easy, which is fine by me" and they added the saying stealing candy from a baby to mean that it was easy, but accidentally made it much edgier in the process.

It’s the fact he calls it *The* Wave Ocean as if we’d get it confused with all the *other* Wave Oceans that does it for me. If we were making characters out of the most random things, that G.U.N Operator would be characterised as a malapropist character who’d pronounce Blaze as Blitz, call Baron Von Barron as Lord Sam Sinister, says idea as idear and mangle the story of Raiders of the Lost Ark in his summary.

I feel like some people forget who Sonic is as a character… the “mountain of hanckerchiefs” is literally such a good line, it’s supposed to be touching and sentimental of what Sonic does. 40:34 “too poetic” oh wow so we’re pulling that card now… ok whatever.

I don't think the problem they have with it is necessarily that it's "too much", but that it's supposed to be touching and sentimental, but is worded in a way that takes the line from being heartfelt to unintentionally funny.
Sure, it's obviously intended to be Sonic telling Shahra that she can't just will her pain away, but the metaphor is so odd that it sounds more like Sonic is telling Shahra to "cry about it".

15:15 "Didn't Elise say the same thing?"
Not only that, but this is basically a core theme of the game; nearly every major character in Sonic '06 has to choose between the world and somebody they care about.
Silver has to seal Blaze away with Iblis to save the world, but he can't bring himself to let her go, so she has to do it herself.
Shadow has to choose between saving Rouge and the Scepter of Darkness. He picks Rouge, which results in Mephiles getting out of the staff and ending the world.
Rouge learns that the world is going to turn against Shadow someday, but promises to still be on his side and not theirs.
And the start of everything is the Duke of Soleanna toying with Solaris and risking ending the world because he wants his dead wife back.
It would arguably be good writing IF they went anywhere with this successfully, but the tragedy of the situation is undercut by everything about the game being terrible and hard to take seriously, especially Sonelise.
