  • Dragon Ball Z has many villains within it which stand out, but one of them got relatively overlooked. However, today we describe Doctor Gero (Android 20) as one of the most crucial and useful villains ever in DBZ. Why? His legacy and his realism which make him the most unusual, weird and scary bad guys in the franchise.

    I always felt like Gero was a pretty underrated villain. His end goal didn’t depend on him being alive, he just wanted to kill Goku and have his creations cause suffering to the earth. He had many contingency plans and created multiple combatants who were above or close to Frieza in power, which is no small feat given how strong Frieza was, even in the Namek saga. While his plans didn’t exactly work, and he had made some oversights, such as not monitoring the Z fighters on Namek, don’t forget that there was still technically a timeline where Gero completely won and Cell killed Trunks.

    I always took it as Gero blamed himself for 16’s death. He wouldn’t have died if Gero didn’t bring him into that life. And he was obligated to make another android to kill Goku by the army at the time. So he brought back his son then captured 17 and 18 only to lie and say they were 16’s betters so he wouldn’t have to use his son and in danger him again.

      I like to think that his wife was dying or was sick which is why he wanted to bring her back as a new type Android. Hell Perfect Cell could've even been a prototype for 21 so then she might be the true ultimate lifeform of course that is not what Gero intended. As for the spybots you see there were still some left or one of Dr. Gero's other supercomputers that hold copies of his mind built some more to improve his wife. However the problem being some of Majin Buu's cell got in her. Most likely around the time of the Majin Buu saga when Buu got released. Can you imagine though if he had a clone of himself or like had his soul seperated from himself cause of that weird soul research he did? Like before he put his brain into an android body he sealed his soul for it to be put into a new type Android body like 21's. Imagine it. Android 22.

    I would very much like a What if where Goku is found by and allied with the Gero family and Red Ribbon Army instead of Brief family and Capsule Corp. What if Dr.Gero made the Dragon Radar first instead of Bulma and sent his son out to look for the Dragon Balls and finds Goku.

    • @CAOcreations
      @CAOcreations 5 лет назад +11

      would be neat but honestly after the wish with Commander Red being taller...and then getting killed by everyone in the army for his stupid stupid wish. The Red Ribbon army would disband and we'd end up with Gero taking the reigns... possibly...
      but, he'd then never have the interest in android takeovers since his son would be alive and all, i mean, sure his wife's passing may nudge him internally but it wasn't until the death of his son that he started to really "break the mold" by modifying human beings (himself, lapis and lazuli)... so who really knows...
      It'll be interesting to see where things take off after the wish into the king piccolo arc...hell, goku not ever developing his martial arts being a factor may be interesting as well...though gero's son might not make it back alive after they get the dragon ball from master roshi depending on how military his attitude is...
      huh lots of factors flying around on in my head...most likely, gero's son would be as gentle as 16 and not immediately be beaten to death by goku in their first meeting...
      i'm going to leave the what iffery to Masako

    • @reifuTD
      @reifuTD 5 лет назад +6

      CAOcreations, As far as Goku's training goes he would most likely still train with Master Roshi after the Pilaf Saga, I do love the possibility of him catching the eye of Mercenary Tao and becoming a crane student but that's probably a low possibility.
      Goku's relationship with the Red Ribbon Army during the Red Ribbon Saga would be important. I'd imagine the Pilaf Saga search for the Dragon Balls by the Red Ribbon Army was just a small side project to investigate there strange energy mostly and if the wish thing was true then also good, that's why Gero's son would be the only man sent on the mission. After that the wish thing was confirmed the Red Ribbon made the Dragonball top priority. Giving that one of Goku's possible closest friends works for the Red Ribbon would make him a little more trusting too and hesitant to attack them.

    • @CAOcreations
      @CAOcreations 5 лет назад +4

      reifuTD that's kind of the idea, but Gero woudn't send his son out with the radar if the entire army was already looking for them too. He would have given all of them a radar if that was the case and that would have made their "searches" allot less sporadic and most importantly less violent...or at least potentially.
      No need to call tao pai pai or kill anyone in the vicinity when you know the location of what you're looking for.... at least not needlessly if there is no retaliation.
      Training with Roshi is sort of up in the air. I mean, after bringing him some random mermaid or whatever gal they can find to get the ball from him, there wouldn't really be a need to train since that's not what's on goku's mind in that encounter. Unless turtle talks allot more about master roshi than he originally did to fill them in as they take him to the island. That might make goku interested in it since he grew up under gohan's tutelage and parenting.
      lots of things could go in different directions depending on what happens during the entirety of the search for the dragon balls towards the end of that wish red makes. This heavily relies on the grand searches means, and whether or not gero mass produces the radars and hands them out to all personnel or keeps it "in the family" so to speak and sends his son out on a mystery search to potentially get killed by who knows what.
      Keep in mind that gero isn't *too* overly protective of his son at this point and has plenty of confidence in his technology and weapon development. He wouldn't have a need to send his kid off on his own to search for the balls. It would just be a happy "coincidence" (plot device) that it ends up being his son that happens to find goku and take him along his mission.

    • @reifuTD
      @reifuTD 5 лет назад +5

      CAOcreations, Well I'm assuming the Pilaf saga happens relatively the same, so Goku would still need Roshi to put out the flaming mountain and show him the kamama. I assume something happened in the original timeline that caused the Red Ribbon Army to mobilized between the end of Pilaf saga and beginning of Red Ribbon saga, like someone saw Shenron the damn sky goes black and he's big so there had to been hundreds of people that seen him or Bulma blabbed to the wrong person. In the new timeline at the point of the Pilaf saga Gero or who ever is researching the Dragonballs aren't sure what they have and theirs no reason why the Dragon Radar Gero's son uses isn't a only prototype.
      Yeah by the time the Red Ribbon Saga happens there is no reason why the whole army can't be outfitted with dragon radar so that whole Saga's search would defiantly end quickly. With out the battles that Goku had to go through he should be weaker when fighting against someone like Tein. When King Piccolo arrives will be fun there where many good strong fighters in Red Ribbon and since Goku didn't kill all of them they will be up and able to fight Piccolo's minions.

    I love Dr. Gero. His design is really cool. His motivations even without knowing what 16 was about clearly showed off a lot. I wasn't so surprised he was gone as quick as he was, mainly because something about the teenage twin's being released scream "um yeah he's so done." But I definitely could've pictured him being more humanized as the saga went on. Cell was definitely unexpected and granted Cell is my favorite villain and his imperfect form is my favorite DB design, period. Overall I feel like it would've been great if there had been more info, backstory connections, flashbacks, and maybe even a ressurection of Gero to stop his own madness (or help and still end up dying) when seeing how 16 functioned. I do honestly believe that as good as it all turned out, Toriyama was still at his prime and got rushed because "oh they look like clowns" and then "but there just kids" into Cell. Like I would've been ok with 15 more episodes before we even saw Cell, and 15 more added onto Cell too. Where I'd say the Buu Saga should've been the opposite (unless they'd done a better filler arc with bojack or taken Gohan's story in a way better direction).

Would Vegita have learned ssj when he did had the editors not stepped in? How would that pan out, with 19 draining all of gokus energy?
    In fact that would be very interesting, because the combat would have to go back to its martial arts roots, losing all of its ki-blasts and such because theyd just drain the energy right out and get more powerful. Yeah sure, goku would probably be out for the arc, only to return at the end like with the previous two arcs, but the journey there would have been very different. Not only that, but the final speech Gero would likely give to Goku at the end of the arc could have been very compelling.

    Dr gero was fantastic when he appeared, he was a horror story, a monster, a mechanical vampire.... when we first heard of the androids they had destroyed the future and killed everyone, when he first appeared he was an old man who drained the life and energy and strength from those characters we cared about we saw what he did to yamcha and next could have been goku or gohan. when gero first came out he scared me as a kid, android 17 and 18 however not so much with there ambrocrombie and fitch outfits and there oh we are strong and dont get tired in a fight(which was never really used to its full potential).

      @chimpcultsage4220 5 лет назад +2

      @@tommysupernova663 I know it's the way the characters were written but I find it crazy that Gero gave them a big enough energy storage to be able to over power Super Saiyan's. It's one thing to have the storage and then over power Super Saiyan and then have to regenerate it after the fight (which would be their version of being exhausted). But to wipe the floor with a super Saiyan and not be anywhere near depleted. It's crazy they are stronger than Freeza, despite Gero not being able to fathom that amount of power.

    • @Draylin41
      @Draylin41 5 лет назад +2

      Hayden Stafford Gero is very much about the end result more so than how it is achieved. In his mind I think he was counting on having androids so overwhelmingly strong that Goku would stand no chance against them. He may have even calculated just how much power would be needed to outdo him completely at his highest known energy output, Being Kiaoken x3 at the time, then added some more to that for insurance. When 17 & 18 ended up exceeding his projections and seeing how unreliable they could be, Gero thought it was perfectly sensible to scale back and create 19 and 20 in a way that was a more precise use of power that would still overwhelm someone of Goku's projected strength.

    I touched on this idea in my own what if series. In the course of Dragonball Goku was more careful about killing. As a result Gero's son didn't die, and as a result of that Gero is a different sort of villain. He's not quietly preparing for his revenge, but rather a more constant thorn who's been sending androids at Goku more constantly. He's more interested in proving the superiority of his creations (and world conquest), since revenge isn't his goal. Basically a Lex Luthor sort of figure driven by ego instead of hatred.

    I honestly thought Dr. Gero was one of the cooler villains, and when Dragonball was starting to air on Toonami he made me excited for when they would get to the Red Ribbon Army. Mercenary Tao turned out to be a bit of anti-climax, though.
    But it's a shame Gero didn't get to do more before he was taken out of action.
    I'd often wondered how things would have gone down if we'd somehow gotten a King Cold/Frieza vs Android 19/Dr. Gero throwdown.

    Thank you for this, MasakoX!
    10:49 I noticed that pattern too, (mostly because it wasn't that hard for me to see because I went through my own struggles with my father... and it was something that I personally started noticing in my life not long before I started to watch Dragonball in the early 2000s). My theory is that Goku and original dragonball are a tribute to Toriyama's father, and that Gohan and Vegeta are dichotomous projections of himself... possibly separating his own twisted emotional struggle within himself.
    And you are absolutely on point. Dr. Gero is the most human villain in the whole series... with a very poor bit of story-telling attached to it. Don't get me wrong, the android saga (through Cell) is my favorite... but it's obvious that Toriyama was told (or personally decided?) to scrap most of it to move things along and get passed the unpopular character designs of 19 and 20.
    It was because of the connection of the Red Ribbon Army that i even went back to watch original dragonball.

    @Kruegernator123 5 лет назад +2

    Doctor Gero could have been an amazing villain. Dragon Ball definitely needed more calculating enemies with more complex stories and motivations; something that Gero could have provided.
    He was able to create cybernetic fighters that were stronger than the Galactic Emperor of the Northern quadrant of Universe 7. With data based only on battles that Goku and his friends fought on their backwater planet, with power levels beginning in the low hundreds during the 22nd Budokai Saga, both Piccolo Sagas, and into the thousands and ten-thousands with the Saiyan Saga, his ultimate creation became strong enough to content with a Super Saiyan 2. Talk about talent!
    Not to mention that if you count the crazy feats of exponential power growth within the Saiyan and Frieza within Dragon Ball Super, Cell could have had the most potential growth within any fighter in the history of Dragon Ball. The story would not be where it is today without the help of this mad scientist. I wish the manga/anime gave Gero a much better backstory, like with Dragon Ball FighterZ did with Android 21 being a recreation of his wife, and Android 16 being a recreation of his deceased son. I always wanted to know more about their relationship.

    A lot of people who love and analyze the series point to the theme of redemption with Tien, Piccolo, 18, Buu and even Goku turning from threats to the world into its protectors.
    Not Dr. Gero. He saw Goku from a completely different angle than "Honorable genius fighter", more "the monster that killed all my friends". Gero isn't going to be redeemed and he doesnt want to join the Z Fighters, he wants to kill Goku and he'll create Androids for generations to do it.
    Symbolically he spits in the face of the thematic redemption of many long-running characters AND brings a darker shade to the early series' childlike whimsy. Goku's actions from when he was a boy directly impact the series even after he's long dead, thanks to Gero's machinations. Vegeta and Piccolo talked big about wanting to kill Goku and end the world, but lost interest. Gero OBSESSES over it and in a few ways actually succeeds. Revenge like that is SCARY in its scope.

    Or even if indeed, Gero hadn't unleashed 17 and 18, or at least not been killed.
    Even visually he's very different from most DBZ villains. Perhaps his second form, if he had one at all, would have simply been his skin being burned off his robotic bodyafter activating some upgrade. Now that's the kind of What If story I'd have wanted to see from Xenoverse.
