  • Dragon Ball Z brought us Saiyans but we were confused about them. What were they exactly? What were their needs and wants? We just saw them as warriors but today, thanks to Abraham Maslov's Theory of Human Motivation, we delve deeper into revealing what the exact desires are of Saiyan warriors and how Goku and Vegeta differ as well as confirm our theory on the matter - explained!

    Crazy idea... The "Need for Safety" is not absent, it's actually completely flipped to become a "need for conflict". A lack of safety leads to more zenkai boostes leading to more strength and eventual self actualization.

    Planet Sadala - They fight for the sake of fighting and getting stronger, also to show their dominance over others. They take over planets for fun and are generally considered evil. Until war broke out and they took over a new planet after Sadala was destroyed, they called it Planet Vegeta.
    Planet Vegeta - They fight to serve Lord Frieza and conquer planets in his name. This trend was broken by Bardock, who revolted against the tyrant. When Frieza blew up Planet Vegeta, along with 99% of the Saiyan race, the only survivors were Kakarot, Raditz, Nappa, Prince Vegeta.
    Kakarot landed on earth and, thanks to his saiyan nature, fought for the sake of getting stronger and fighting strong guys like Piccolo. Although he was seen as a hero which contrasted to the Saiyan's usual villain persona.
    Raditz and Nappa also fought for the sake of fighting, but did so in the name of Frieza. They were both sadistic warriors with stone-hearts and no actual goal in life.
    Vegeta fought to prove that he was the best at everything, usually taking planets by himself to try to prove to Frieza that he was the strongest in his forces.
    Universe 6 Saiyans fight in the name of justice like the Pride Troopers and are hired by other people to fight in wars or tournaments. They are usually a peaceful bunch, only fighting when necessary.

      @Mr420Spy
      Broly (not Super but Legendary Super Saiyan) is a psychopath who loves killing and relishes in the blood of his enemies. Vegeta used to do that aswell.
      Paragus is a manipulative sociopath who used his own son Broly for his own selfish revenge and was brought to justice by Broly's psychopathic nature as the Legendary Super Saiyan.
      Tarble is an oddball in this, he was a peaceful saiyan that would have made sense if he was a female. He was also written at a time where Toriyama forgot that the Saiyans were usually cold and heartless warriors, so he made Tarble a Universe 6 type Saiyan.
      Female Saiyans could be as brash as males but they were more likely to have a nicer personality. Not sweet but like a Tsundere (they do care, but just don't like showing it).
      As you said Turles is not canon, but he was on the same style as Raditz and Nappa. Yet he hated Vegeta with his very being and was actually quite smart like Bardock.

    Something i clocked on... May just be a coincidence. But this fits your colour theory very accurately if u align to auras n not just hair colour... Super Sayain god or the Root Chakra could be described as the physiological needs. False Super sayain Orange Aura fits the regards to needs of safety which is really the strength of your guts n overall the resolve of a person.
    Then you have Love and Belonging tying straight it the solar chakra and the mentality of super sayain ascension. You could even say that super sayain 2 with its more golden aura is a cross between Gut and Solar.
    Then we get to Broly and Kale (as much as this depends on him in the next movie) both characters were closely tied to their own esteem. Their yearning for respect, freedom and to be strong that brings the beserker similar for us all.
    Then finally you have the self actualized aspect of being the best you that can be which ties in to the throat chakras rendition and the whole stick of super sayain blues meaning of harnessing ones strength and not wasting potential energy.
    I find that thinking this way does kinda fit the concept you are using to analyse the sayain only you have misconcieved that Sayains and Half sayains have different parallels to their own regards to Safety.
    Not only do you have Raditz and Kale breaking that mold from a pure blood side but Goten hasn't much regard to his own safety as well being almost carbon clone of Goku n all...
    But i bring that up as if you want to take the idea even further on tying those theories together. I would take the angle thats proposed more litterally as the needs of well any creature varys from upbringing to even the perceptions they have.
    Ya see in a way this chart would be in all of us except with different rules that we personally would define. Such as physiological needs referencing Reproduction... That could manifest in a manor where you search for specifics to the opposite end of the scale where it just a game of cocks and rubbers...
    You could apply this logic to every single thing but if you were to use this chart to analyse a character from Dragon Ball you would have to start from the point down instead of how we form our own perceptions of ourselves as we experience this concept from the ground up. Our self actualized realities the last peice of the puzzle that is the what and why of out actions.
    When taking this to realism you can't know every detail of physiological needs presented from the outside looking in. Thus you must observe what they do and work your way down to determine or well recognise these personal needs in greater and greater details the more you watch them. Not as in a lengthening check list of aspects more a redifined varation from previous models. As like in a show everyone is in a progression there is no real end to who someone is.

      I said in another comment that they are more like Assyrians, at least in terms of their history. They annihilated the dominant power of their homeland, used all of their technology while boasting of their superiority (while they just managed to win due to some insane luck,) never made a breakthrough, stagnated for a century, a new power shows up (Frieza in this case,) they are wiped from the face of the Earth/Vegeta, a few escape, thus ends their "glorious" rule.

    • @lettylunasical4766
      @lettylunasical4766 5 лет назад

      @Kylo Wren That makes a lot of sense of the Planet Vegeta part of their history. By that point, like the Assyrians, they were a civilization. It also makes sense that they would stagnate for ages, never really improving, which is why when Freeza came along they accepted being his personal army, as the whole idea of saiyan pride was maybe more based on 'being the best fighters' whereas later with Vegeta it was more about self-worth.
      But I was wondering about even before that though, as in, how they evolved into what they were.
      I had another comment I'll copy over if anyone's interested:

    • @lettylunasical4766
      @lettylunasical4766 5 лет назад

      1) I always wonder how evolution affected saiyans (I think this whenever I watch anything about aliens.) I wonder if Sadla originally was home to a number of predators/dangerous creatures so saiyans evolved to be highly aggressive, protective and the ability to work as a pack as well as loners. (However, how much of this 'pack mentality' was actually due to them working in an army for Freeza for so long?)
      2) The previous theory would then cover Maslow's need of self preservation. Saiyans are reckless, but perhaps because evolutionary wise being reckless was a better way of protecting themselves in a violent environment. Further, it would explain why saiyans crave becoming stronger or the strongest.
      3) In terms of self-actualisation, I think the saiyans do not attain this easily, and Vegeta and Goku are very lucky to have something very akin to it, if not it itself. I think that the saiyans were self-destructive because they could not maintain their behaviour.
      So, evolution sometimes has side effects (i.e. in humans the human consiousness/ self awareness came from the evolution of our large brains which happened because we learned to cook which meant we could consume more calories more easily, which came about from the basic need to consume). Likewise, the saiyan need to always be the strongest could have come from a basic need, but in a large community this created conflict which was only resolved through violence. Therefore, I think saiyans kept trying to get stronger with the mind that that would satisfy them, but as Vegeta has shown (and as Maslow described with the man's utopia being one of food) this actually isn't enough.
      That would explain why saiyans were never satisfied and is one reason they ended up becoming a menace. It would also explain why the Earth saiyans and Tarble are relatively calm and satisfied, because they were able to find love and companionship on top of being able to fight (i.e. all the contests) and being the strongest beings on their respective planets.
      Factors that compromise our study of Saiyans
      a) we don't have enough Saiyans shown in enough detail to make a real study.
      b) The main saiyans we do know were raised outside of saiyan society. Vegeta and Raditz, arguably, showcase Freeza's values (dominance of a race/group, destruction of the enemy), not necessarily a saiyans. Goku overall showcases human values (love, peace, forgiveness) as do the hybrid saiyans.

  • @SchneeflockeMonsoon
    @SchneeflockeMonsoon 5 лет назад +9

    Based on Pan, I would say that Saiyans are actually humans. They aren’t Terrans, but they are humans.
    Also, what if Saiyans move up they Pyramid the more they interbreed? So pure-bloods are at the bottom, half-breeds are the next, and so on.

    The Study of Sayianlogy by Dr. Masako PhD.SSJ3

  • @Rebun24
    @Rebun24 5 лет назад +1

    Hey Masako, hope you see this!
    I think it's hard to say if we could use the template of Goku and Vegeta across the saiyan race broadly. We only have a small sample to work with. Obviously Saiyans live for the fight, but whether or not that extends into them wanting to become better fighters might not hold up to scrutiny.
    As a kid, Goku wanted to fight like all saiyans, but he had mentors who inspired him to further his fighting skills and to always seek new frontiers. This lesson stuck with him and it has been a constant companion along with his urge to fight. If he didn't have an enemy, Goku would find one for the sole purpose to better himself. Vegeta on the other hand seemed to be content, and to some degree still is, to be the strongest Saiyan. If Vegeta curbstomped Goku at anytime and finished the job, I think he would lose his motivation quickly, assert his place as supreme and not bother much to increase his personal battle power (atleast not to the degree of Goku)
    Raditz was cautious and a bit cowardly and seemed to accept his position as lowest of the pack. Nappa seemed to love to fight, but I don't think he cared much about anything else.
    I think Saiyans are primarily in it just for the fight, not necessarily to improve themselves but for the thrill of it.
    My two cents :)

    Hey, just gonna kinda throw this out there. At lest for social interaction and the topic of friendship you seemed to have forgotten Bardock. I know his movie isn't cannon but if we took a look at his interaction with his team there seems to have been at minimum that brothers in arms mentality. But as for a best friend... well he does carry that blood soaked headband around with him. He did seem to have a pretty good friendship with Tora compared to his other company of fighters.
    This may be an invalid point within the new movie coming up and changing a few things (and sadly for me I haven't had the chance to view dragon ball minus) but I feel Barock as the typical saiyan warrior in his first movie seems to imply they do form friendships in some way.

    Gohan, Trunks and Goten might one day move beyond the need to constantly get stronger but for Goku and Vegeta the need for a good fight is part of who the are. To paraphrase the line from the Broly trailer, the story of the Saiyan Warrior race is told through combat. The psychological need to find the absolute strongest opponent and prove that they are the strongest whether they want to or not is just ingrained in the Saiyan mentality whether be for good or for ill.

    Maslov's theory is more or less a spectrum running from the physical to the spiritual; as each hierarchical need is fulfilled, our wants move up a level of abstraction towards total self knowledge (which is the same as knowledge of everything, because you don't exist independent of everything else.)
    It's a logical theory, but doesn't quite reflect the reality.
    Creative development is compulsory for a small number of people and irrelevant to most others.
    Some people don't have any particular need or desire to know themselves even if they can understand intellectually that it would be in their best interests.
    In this way, the creative intellectual man lauds it over the simpleton, but is possessed of self consciousness because he feels that in the absence of self-actualization, he is incomplete, whereas the simple man has no need to justify himself existentially and so possesses the very completeness the intellectual deems himself uniquely qualified to pursue.
    The simple man may be simple, but at least he is able to regard himself as a man and not as a mouse as the intellectual is forced to by his self consciousness.
    Thus it is only the man who clings to the self who loses it.
    Victory is in a simple soul.

    • @amanofnoreputation2164

      @FuckYouAllToPieces
      Well ask yourself the question: "What do I want?"
      At first you'll think, "Well I'd like all this money, power, eternal youth..." and so on.
      But if you think through those things, you'll realize that they don't satisfy you.
      Material possessions don't satisfy. Power robs you of any purpose. Eternal life is no different than eternal damnation.
      There is no desire, even altruism, that can survive scrutiny. No matter what you think you want, if you think about what would happen if you got it you decide, "I wouldn't look down on such a gift or achievement, but it's not what I really want."
      If utopia was ever achieved, people would break it to make something interesting happen.
      The reason the model doesn't work is because you can never know what you really, deeply, want. It works as a generalization, but is irrelevant in particular.

    • @amanofnoreputation2164
      @amanofnoreputation2164 5 лет назад

    i think goku and vegeta definitely can transcend their saiyan nature. this is seen in goku's speech to vegeta in the buu arc while attempting to convince him to fuse into vegetto, that they should start a new race...etc.
    on top of that, we see goku's desire for the next generation to take over, as well as him directly training uub (aside from wanting to fight a strong guy) to take his mantle as the protector of earth.

    Goku's Saiyan Pride manifested during Battle of Gods, when he had to come to terms with the idea that there was a level of power that he couldn't just put in enough effort to meet on his own, which wasn't really a thing he ever had to contend with, previously (sort of). I think Saiyan Pride manifests when it comes to their abilities as warriors, that they can come together as a social species, but when it comes to fighting, they have to be able to stand tall and alone, and that is what leads Goku to be more instinctively independent and Vegeta to kill one of the few remaining members of his own species.

    Masako, Any chance you can do another Side-Story IF but this time combine some of the ones you have done and see the different outcomes from that?
    The ones I'm talking about is:
    What If Raditz turned Good.
    What If Nappa turned Good.
    What if Cell turned Good.
    And...
    What If Gine went with Goku to Earth.
    Imagine the differences and outcomes that could happen with a combo of these.
    I wouldn't mind seeing specifically a combo of.
    What if Raditz and What if Nappa turned Good, because then you can go from the very start and work yourself around the two What if stories and just alter some bits slightly?

    Raditz and Vegeta actually are good window into how most of the very low class saiyans were likely both treated and likely viewed themselves when they were the "weakest". Expendable and easily extinguished trash that constantly needed to be ahead of any threat that came their way or looking for an opportunity to become better. Even with only a handful of Saiyans left, the hierarchy was established both by social ranks of a dead race and by the power the Prince had over both of them. A system that Kakarot comes into for a time, being the only other pure saiyan left alive and unseats Vegeta as someone always surpassing him.
    Even with only two of them left, in a monarchical and class line that is now essentially meaningless; Vegeta defines himself through that context even now, however he tweaks it into accepting some sort of earthling role.
    The bigger look at Saiyan culture will be how others react to and treat Broly, because of the reverence even Vegeta had at the Legendary Super Saiyan. Where he isn't just the strongest, where his power isn't just the most Saiyan thing ever, but that he may be the Apex of their species. A hypothetical pinnacle of power and existence. What Saiyans could even see as Enlightenment, with very practical and physical elements.

  • @TheRealAlpha2

    It could be reasoned that the weaker a Saiyan is the more he/she values self preservation. Sure there's an innate love of combat they're practically Neanderthals, but having higher cognitive abilities like Homo-sapiens they have the ability to deny their base urges when something of more immediate priority occurs. I think it's worth also considering that the existing living saiyans are atypical in that they've adapted to life outside of the Saiyan norm regardless of how they try to live like normal saiyans by looking for combat, Vegeta has a wife that he actually seems to Love, they arent raising their kids in vats, and they have more power than any other Saiyan ever did which would account for added boldness.

Both Goku and Vegeta consistantly show that, as horrible as it migjt be to humans, they will put training and fighting above the needs of love and community. Psychologically they could not live in a pacifistic socieyy

    Here’s a theory for everyone. What if Goku wasn’t a complete idiot?
    Raditz had two moments: 1. When Raditz mentioned that a Saiyan’s tail is key to their power, why didn’t Goku speak up and say “so if I still had my tail, I could get stronger” and went out to get his tail back; 2. When Raditz said what his plan was for to get Goku and that Goku was originally supposed to destroy humanity, what if Goku just said “I’ll help you as long as Earth is left untouched, I don’t want anything bad to happen to my family”, which would probably make Raditz notice Gohan (if he hasn’t already) realizing half breeds are possible to bring back the saiyan race (kinda like DBO).
    There are more but the Raditz incident is the one that could shake the whole series

    Saiyan pride being part of it. Even to an extent of group think to where oddities among Saiyans having different prospective usually means said Saiyan becomes the butt of all jokes between the other Saiyans or otherwise shamed and considered unsaiyan for the difference.... except if the odd ball saiyan is exceedingly strong then he's earned the right to be different.

    Maslow's hierarchy still works for Saiyans just as it does for humans. Keep in mind that the hierarchy is one of basic prioritization, and it's base nature, not an absolute. The archetypical human would normally sacrifice personal security for physiological needs, but that isn't actually true for the average western human. Most of us are sleep deprived to enable safety needs. A significant number of people will sacrifice safety and physical needs for esteem or love and belonging (taking financial risks to impress others for an example on the negative side, or sacrificing ones life to save another for an exampe on the positive side). The Saiyans eschewing safety needs isn't an example of differing from humanity, it's immitating what many consider to be toxic masculinity - being culturally pressured into risking safety to "prove" onesself. The cultural pressure gives immediacy to the "belonging" aspect while also implying a potential safety need (in the real world with bullies acting violently, in the Saiyan case being killed for being a "weakling").

    So I have been wondering how come Goku can't go beyond a time's 30 Kaio-ken after all the years of his training and mastery of the super saiyan form's he can only use a time's 30 kaio-ken, when he first learned the skill he was able to max it out at time's 3 after a one year long training on king kai's plannet, wile it (think it took him 7 days) to get to namek he was able to use a time 10 kaio-ken and was at his limit's, kinda made me wonder, what might have happend to make Goku weaker, could it be because he unlocked super saiyan and stopt training with Kaio-ken, if so what would have happend if he had given up on the super saiyan forms and trained with Kaio-ken instead.

    • @darktigersharkmax4432
      @darktigersharkmax4432 5 лет назад +2

      Yeah he stopped using kaioken since super saiyan is much more powerful and efficient and didn't destroy the body and if goku for some reason didn't use super saiyan and focused on kaioken he would be *much* weaker than he is now

    • @Kazuma_DoubleIce
      @Kazuma_DoubleIce 5 лет назад

      @@darktigersharkmax4432 Well that is true, but we don't realy know in the end how strong he would have been, example is Vegita who didn't see the use of SS3 and instead just used SS2, so we would not know realy how strong Goku would have been if he had consentrated on useing the Kaioken insted of getting the SS2 and 3 forms. Right?

    • @darktigersharkmax4432
      @darktigersharkmax4432 5 лет назад +1

      @@Kazuma_DoubleIce I mean ssj is a 50 times multiplayer which is stronger than any kaioken goku has done, ssj2 is 100 times, and ssj3 is 400 times, remember kaioken times 20 recks goku's body even in a divine form with perfect ki control so I highly doubt he can use kaioken to the point that it's better than ssj3 or even ssj1

    • @DanielvSperber
      @DanielvSperber 5 лет назад

      As I recall, Kaioken simply cannot be used in conjunction with Super Saiyan. It just doesn't work. Kaioken and Super Saiyan are opposites, philosophically speaking. Super Saiyan Blue, however, is not a state powered by unrestrained rage, and is thus compatible with Kaioken.

    • @Kazuma_DoubleIce
      @Kazuma_DoubleIce 5 лет назад

      @@DanielvSperber Yeah I know it can't be used in combination with SSJ but what I meent was that Goku would give up on SSJ3 and instead train to master Kaioken time's (say 50-60) instead and have SSJ2 as a back up in case the Kaioken did not help in battle.

    The Saiyan power hyarchy covers most of these in my opinion. Their drive to be the strongest covers social needs, personal self needs, and by being lenient on personal safety in order to improve or to present your own power will insure the overall safety of the race. Weeding out the weak. A constant drive to be stronger and more powerful fits this pyramid in my opinion seeing how saiyan society is based of high class and low class based off power level and warrior status. The more basic saiyans seem to be satisfied with just eating whatever they kill while creatures like Berus or Buu prefer sweets or gourmet food. Idk how to exactly explain what im going on about I just feel you were a little off on your explanations

    Maslow's hierarchy doesn't work as more than a very basic guideline. It's also important to recognize that it can't be a hierarchy. Life doesn't like ordered things, and our brains can be very mixed up on what we *need* very easily.
    As you spoke about in the video, Goky (and Vegeta) both sacrificed their lower needs for higher ones. This is common within stories and religion, though. Look at religious fasting, a denial of what should be the most fundamental need. Also practiced by almost a billion people in the world regularly.
    Beyond that, a critical need for humans is other people. It's something Maslow didn't have much experience with given it's from 1948 and psychology was in its infancy. We *know* human's most fundamental need, a need that we can't operate without, is *other people.*
    Who built your shelter? We caught your food? Who taught you?
    If you're deprived of human contact for significant periods, you simple cannot function eventually. It literally damages your brain.
    And I think that's the primary difference with saiyans. From near birth, they're surprisingly capable. They're savage, and they become strong very quickly. Gohan provided for himself with only minimal interference from Piccolo. Goku, originally, was expected to have taken care of himself and the planet. Sorta. And he was laughably weak for a saiyan!
    Saiyans are capable of self reliance to a level humans just can't comprehend.
