Shortly after Billy Joel earned his first U.K. Top 40 hit with “Just The Way You Are,” he and his band travelled to England for an electrifying performance recorded for the hit BBC series The Old Grey Whistle Test. Ahead of his first headlining show in the country, Billy performed all the hits from The Stranger plus additional classics from his repertoire.

Lyrics:
Some folks like to get away,
Take a holiday from the neighborhood
Hop a flight to Miami Beach or to Hollywood
But I'm takin' a Greyhound on the Hudson River line
I'm in a New York state of mind
I've seen all the movie stars in their fancy cars and their limousines
Been high in the Rockys under the evergreens
I know what I'm needin', and I don't want to waste more time
I'm in a New York state of mind
It was so easy livin' day by day
Out of touch with the rhythym and blues
But now I need a little give and take
The New York Times, the Daily News
It comes down to reality, and it's fine with me cause I've let it slide
I don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside
I don't have any reasons
I left them all behind
I'm in a New York state of mind
Oh yeah
It was so easy living day by day
Out of touch with the rhythym and blues
But now I need a little give and take
The New York Times, the Daily News
Who, oh, oh whoa who
It comes down to reality, and it's fine with me cause I've let it slide
I don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside
I don't have any reasons
I left them all behind
I'm in a New York state of mind
I'm just taking a Greyhound on the Hudson River line
Cause I'm in a, I'm in a New York state of mind

A real musical genius.
He's just a class act and don't forget no auto tune just pure musical and vocal skills
My childhood hero was truly talented 😤
A genius is the word your lookin for there buddy
I’m 73 years old. They don’t get any more original than Billy Joel. He IS “The Piano Man”. How I wish I could see him in concert one more time.
Just saw him a few days ago in Cincinnati, Ohio…..AMAZING!!!
You did? You saw him? I really want to know!
I’ve seen him several times but yeah, me too.
I took my two sons to your concert in St. Louis back in the 80’s. I wanted them to experience a true musical artist, not just noise. After your concert, my oldest son was so excited he couldn’t sleep that night. They couldn’t stop talking about the concert. We went again to several years later when you were back in St. Louis. Thanks for all the great times.
If you go to new york you can see him
He’s one of the best musicians of all time. Being able to play like that and still sing so soulfully is a God given gift.
...and to write those lyrics...compose that music...and play it...and sing it soulfully. ALL OF THAT is what makes him a truly talented musician and performer.
❤
He worked friggin hard so you can believe that it's a god given gift...
@@jfbravoc It’s certainly a gift. Most people can work at it from now until the end of time and never achieve his level of musicianship. You are born with it or you are not.
Billy was classically trained on the piano. Many rockers were including Elton,.
As a 28 year old native New Yorker to me Billy is the best artist to ever come out of New York!!!!!!

He's the 7th highest selling artist in America, was just passed by Michael Jackson

Lifelong fan, as I'm in my last year of cancer, I'll share a moment of serendipity (google it). Took a bus tour to NYC on Gray Coach (Apr20-23/84) when I was 16. Awesome. At tour's end, our Greyhound bus was travelling up the Hudson river line as Manhattan was lit up like Paris. I was listening to my walkman when the radio played this song. An absolute highlight of my life and one I haven't shared til now (who would believe me?). Thank you, Mr Joel, for one of those moments of life that make life worth living.
You have a New York state of mind and you should not change your bloodline. OK with me. Such a lovely song.

How ironic that nowadays, every musical act goes out live and tries to "sound like the album," when back then the magic was already there live and you tried to capture it on the album.

@@tranhoanghieu4576 Thing is... with music like this it was always so changeable that the nice thing about hearing it live was that any mistakes or slips adds character, and if they did things better than it was memorable. Joel did some more interesting things with the piano intro here, and if you're seeing this live you're gonna think "Boy am I lucky to be one of the few people who experienced the song THIS way"

Playing straight jazz lines at speed, completely in the pocket when the band is silent, and hitting every major not of the melody on time, in between his lines. Absolutely amazing. Nice work.

Seeing this at 10 years old back then made me switch for clarinet to saxophone. I saw that girls liked it. Springsteen, Bowie, Ronstadt, and many others had saxophone on their records.
Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" is an incredible masterpiece that showcases his exceptional talent as a musician, singer, and songwriter. The way he effortlessly blends soulful vocals with his piano skills is truly a gift from above. At my 32 years of age, I can attest that there's no one more original and iconic than Billy Joel. Even though I'm not from New York, this song, especially the sax solo, gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Billy's music is like its own genre, and it's something we all cherish. If JFK airport greets you with a giant ad containing the title of this song, you really get to realize how quintessential Billy Joel is to the Big Apple! They’re just synonyms! An extraordinary artist matching the same greatness of his city!👏👏👏🙌🙌
I was never a big Billy Joel fan back in the 70s. But this seriously impressed me. He's a better piano player than I remembered. Like, a serious player. It's funny when he really goes full on Ray Charles with his voice. I think it was his good friend Paul Simon who once said that Billy could imitate anyone, which could be a detriment because it made it harder for his natural voice to come out.
I read long ago some critic pointing out that he was, in his opinion, subpar on his left hand while nimble with his right. I hear the nimble, I don't hear the subpar. He is, and was, a fine player of great skill and expressiveness.
@@markfrommaryland3825 Actually, that might have been Billy himself. I remember him saying exactly that in an interview - by way of mentioning that he couldn't play Bach-y contrapunctal style - and was watching for it here. And, like you, I don't hear an atrophied left hand at all.
And song writer as well telling good stories
He had many influences the late great Ray Charles was definitely one of them but I'm sure he was burdened from it those that can do those that can't talk about those that can
I was also impressed with his piano and the sax the tone was like butter
The old grey whistle test was the benchmark of proper live music. So many great acts played on it from Lynyrd Skynyrd,U2,Talking Heads, the Undertones, Specials and the piano man here.

@@MrYoYoBoBoChaddyInsaneZhangII Amen. They're a godsend for finding and watching talent that is not yet well known. I also recommend the website "Song Exploder" for same, plus they get interviewed about how they built the featured song. There are some old songs and a focus on movie and TV themes that is also appealing, but mainly, it's acts with a growing following that are not yet big.
Did U2 play here!?
Takes me straight back to Sydney (NSW State, Australia) in the 1970's. The 'Piano Man' LP hit our airwaves in 1974. And half a century later Billy Joel's music still rocks. Timeless.
I have never had the pleasure of seein Billy Joel live, but my sister has. She has lierally attended 60-70 concerts in her life and she said tjat Billy Joel was hands down the best show. Quite a statement there.
His backup singer is renting a house, from my family.
i was going to go to his concert in charlotte in april but it got rescheduled due to covid 😭
Everyone's talking bout how great Piano Man, but this is far superior
so it goes with popular music and radio hits
Another thing about Billy that I admire, besides his unbelievable genius, is that he is a shining example of determination and motivation and confidence. What’s oftentimes more important than a college degree, or even a high school diploma, is simply going all out for whatever interest you have. For him to quit high school to follow his dream of playing music…..not knowing what degree of success lay ahead….gives me goosebumps! Doing what he loves…… what he has a passion for…. is something most people never achieve.
I’m not even from New York and this is a gut punch of emotions! What a legend!

So funny. When I saw him in 1980 at the Providence Civic Center in Rhode Island on the Glass Houses tour, the lights in the theater went dark, and the crowd cheered. Lighters came out everywhere. Then, in the dark, we hear the opening of ‘The Stranger’ - solo piano. As a single spotlight shines down on him, a column of cigarette smoke rises up from his piano. Right when the opening piano stops, he reaches for the cigarette from the ashtray, drags, and blows a column of smoke up into the light and then says, “we don’t need no F-ing dry ice.. hit it!” And the Stranger breaks into full stride, guitars blaring and lights blazing.
