I proposed to my wife in 1993 at karaoke, cementing Just the Way You Are as another of “Our Songs. I had to take a bus to Tower Records for a cassette tape of the karaoke version, because Billy Joel selections were not generally available for karaoke. I walked through the audience as I sang, got on one knee and proposed during the musical break. She actually said yes, and we were married three days later. We’ll celebrate our 29th anniversary in a few months. Beautiful song. Also, if I had a favorite, it would definitely be Close to the Borderline. Man does that song hit home.
My mom introduced me to Billy Joel's music in 2006. On the Way home she was always listening Billy Joel in the car. 2 songs which were mandatory to listen to, were "the lunatic" and "scenes from an italian restaurant". In 2016 she bought 2 tickets for the only show billy played in germany, in Frankfurth, 3rd row... actually it did not matter because the people went crazy and everything center was first row at one point. When she passed away last year we played "I go to extremes" at her funeral. I'm really greatful for the relationship i built up to my mom, especially through the musical connection she built via Billy Joel's music.
This is interesting to hear him talk about his songs. I briefly met Billy Joel in Iowa City, Iowa following his concert around 1987 or so, as his band was staying at the same hotel as I was. I had attended his concert that evening and he was now back in the hotel bar mingling with people, along with his drummer, Liberty DeVitto, and his saxophonist, Mark Rivera. I asked Billy at that time what his favorite song was of those he sang. His comment at that time was, “My songs are my children. I like them all the same.”
Nick Ito To be honest, I'm not even sure we need any more new music. I mean, there's already a whole century of good stuff for everyone of us to discover. =D
Nick Ito Meh, there's always been terrible music. It just feels like there's more now simply because the most popular bands are usually some person with no talent except taking their clothes off. It doesn't mean there aren't great bands now, they just aren't as popular. I'd say check out Norah Jones for someone with talent who has made it, and Lake Street Dive for a band that hasn't quite yet.
Emerald kat Alabama Shakes are pretty legit too. But ...I'm not seeing current incarnations of like, weird original indie rock like the pixies, Elliott smith, sparklehorse, Jeff Buckley, etc etc...
The prelude into angry young man will always hold a place in my heart. Just the sheer songwriting and piano ability displayed there is incredible, and it always even gets my heart going in a way, like I hold my breath because I'm just in awe of how incredible it sounds. I'm terrible at describing the feeling, but I also get it with one of Walk the Moon's songs, "Work this Body." It has an amazing crescendo moment and then goes right back into it and I have listened to it so many times at this point.

Nobody writes lyrics from everyday phrases like Billy Joel - that also convey the era so perfectly. “They got an apartment with deep pile carpet and a couple of paintings from Sears.”
Saw him last night. He mentioned this interview and clarified that his favorite songs are always changing, then proceeded to play Vienna. He was incredible
I've seen so many concerts but to this day the most memorable of all (to my surprise) was Billy Joel at The New Haven Coliseum (10/25/1986). I remember ever minute of that concert. So wish I could see him next month at Madison Square Garden. He's got talent, charisma, humor, soul and more. He cares about his audience -- what a night. We were all on our feet dancing the whole night. Stay well Billy, we need you.

Scenes from an Italian Restaurant it's definitely the best Billy Joel song ever! I love so many of his songs. He is really one of the best! I love you Billy Joel. 💕
When my step-daughter was in Jr. High, her English class broke down the song We Didn't Start the Fire (they had a very progressive teacher), and they analyzed each line. She found it quite educational. Mr. Joel...I've been a big fan of yours since Piano Man. I'd like to thank you immensely for the wealth of music and Happiness that you have given me. If I had a million dollars that I could send you as a tip - I would!
Me too. What a talent and what a showman! Never will forget him playing that piano like Wow! Then standing up and kicking the piano bench across the stage and sliding on his knees across the stage, singing all the while without missing a beat!
I've said for decades that Billy is one of the top five BEST Songwriters on the planet. Being from N.Y. he spells out every vision, in lyrics, that his eyes & mind want to capture. And his melodies set the settings for every word being sung. His songs are so well crafted that few other singers can cover them near as well as Billy can. Then, when he brings all this, coupled with his excellent, entering, exuberance, to the stage ... Wow! He was gifted many times over, and it shows he knows it by backing away as he did, so we are just as pleased to be recipients of his well balanced talents. I've often been told I resemble his looks but I honestly wish I had a mere fraction of his songwriting gifts instead. May He keep doing it and keep it rolling. His repertoire is full enough. Every mood, Every story, every tell is told with perfection. My other four are : Paul Simon, Sting, Mr. Zimmerman and (maybe) Elton.
It's really hard to pick only 5 favorite Billy Joel songs, but here goes: 1. Streetlife Serenader 2. Summer, Highland Falls 3. Pressure 4. Honesty 5. And So It Goes

Between my dad and my sister, I've been listening to Billy Joel as long as I can remember, but "And So It Goes" is one I didn't appreciate until I was in my '20s. It's such a beautifully simple song, almost a hymn. I still don't know how you can write lyrics like those, that lay down your feelings so bare and still remain composed while you perform.

I did a job at the Old Trafford stadium, back in 2018, for Billy Joel's concert. He was incredible and I was happy to have been working right at the front. I loved every minute of it!
First seen Billy play when he was the opening act for the Doobie Brothers. Some of the fans were hardcore Doobie fans. They constantly were yelling Dobbies and gave Billy no chance to get going. You could understand why he was really annoyed with this. He stopped and said I've been paid so if you don't want to hear me the Dobbies will not be out till their scheduled time . I can leave and you can look at an empty stage till Dobbies. Once the loudmouths shut up he blew everyone away. Been a life long fan and it was one hell a concert in the end.
That's cool! Can't imagine Billy opening for the Doobs!!!! But then in high school we had some long forgotten British group perform at our Homecoming and the opening act was The Who!!! They had just released the Tommy opera and they sang the whole thing! They were booked a year previously.
Great story, thanks for sharing. I saw Billy at Petco Part recently and he sure is one cool guy and I can definitely see him saying that. Love the Doobies too!
The first date I had with the woman who would become my wife was at a Billy Joel concert in Raleigh, NC, in March 1979. His show was electric and he brought down the house with “Only the Good Die Young” as his encore performance. We couldn’t stop clapping and cheering. What a talent, what a treasure!
Uptown Girl and the Longest Time was 1&2 for me but after the birth of my own daughter Lullabye resonates so much within me that it went from 3 to 1 for me
@Michel Plaxton My father passed away from Covid in May. He was a huge Billy Joel fan, and had so many stories about all the times he’d seen them. We decided that we needed to honor them with a Billy song at his funeral, so Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) was what we chose. It was perfect, and really a highlight to his service. I love it so, and now it has an even more special spot in my heart!
'I thought I had my say..."That's the response of an intelligent, experienced artist. Some of these older ones can't let go and wanna go to war with artists half they age.*cough*Mariah *cough cough*
It's nice that he's not putting out new material without the inspiration but keep in mind he's touring as a greatest hits package. And while that makes fans happy, let's not anoint him for it. Saw him at The Spectrum in '77 and that did it for me. He would never be better in my eyes (or for my ears).
And some continue to write good stuff and get nominated for awards right alongside "new" artists (Sting, ahem). James Taylor and Paul Simon and Jackson Brown still write good music too. Mariah is not in her 50s even, let alone her 60s. She is not Billy's contemporary.
Jeanae Rowley Yes would love to hear more orgrinial songs from him. Although we as fans must remember touring takes *ALLOT* out of our favorite musicians. 😧😔🎤

Billy Joel is so amazing. He was before & during my time but I still love his stuff. He is one of a few performers/bands I encourage younger people to hear
summyb been my favorite since I discovered the song 25 years ago in college. Always had a special place in my heart that song. Last year unplanned, I ended up in Vienna for 4 months. Call it Law of Attraction, the Universe, whatever... but that was powerful synchronicity to have ended up there so spontaneously. There’s a clip I discovered on iTunes about Vienna where he talked about the genesis of the song, what was behind the meaning. So great to get that inside info from the songwriter himself.
+The GOAT well... Kanye west is human, and he's the exact opposite of what we're talking about. He's belligerent, pompous and self-righteous. I can't take an artist seriously when they pride themselves on being a genius, whether they actually are or not.

An extremely intelligent and experienced songwriter. So glad he didn't push it further then he felt is should have unlike some of the oldies today who don't know they incapable of writing music on the level they used to. "I thought I had my say". Best possible response.
I just got thru visiting my favorite city St louis and listened to alot of Billy's hits while doing it and they all fit in perfectly on this trip. My favorite song by Billy during this trip was "My life" which is my favorite song by Billy overall!

If someone deserved the Nobel for writing songs, that was actually Billy Joel
Look, I like Billy Joel too, but come on. He's not Dylan.
Carole King
*cough cough* bullshit
No offense but I just don't agree no one can beat Dylan 😂
@@kadencollins6191 Zero chance for BD to beat the lyrics to Lullabye. And that was just one example.
Dylan would he as good as Billy Joel if Dylan actually had melodies to his 'songs'
Yep. Scenes from an Italian Restaurant plays every weekend in my garage. It should be part of a Joel musical.
There was one...Movin' Out. Not sure which songs were in it though.
She's Right On time ,Such a FABULOUS song. Love Scenes from an Italian Restaurant! Great picks, Great songs. Amazing Artist!
I think “Vienna” is his favorite since it was the first song he thought of and had to think a bit longer to name the other ones.
i agree but he has said in the past how much he loves that song too
R B it’s my favorite song of his, I was happy that he had a big meaning of it as well

It’s Frankfurt ;)
This is interesting to hear him talk about his songs. I briefly met Billy Joel in Iowa City, Iowa following his concert around 1987 or so, as his band was staying at the same hotel as I was. I had attended his concert that evening and he was now back in the hotel bar mingling with people, along with his drummer, Liberty DeVitto, and his saxophonist, Mark Rivera. I asked Billy at that time what his favorite song was of those he sang. His comment at that time was, “My songs are my children. I like them all the same.”
I was there, too!!
すごい体験ですね!
Good to know when you're done. Billy he smart.
Lester Lee i wish he could make changes to this crappy music of today
Nick Ito To be honest, I'm not even sure we need any more new music. I mean, there's already a whole century of good stuff for everyone of us to discover. =D
Nick Ito Meh, there's always been terrible music. It just feels like there's more now simply because the most popular bands are usually some person with no talent except taking their clothes off. It doesn't mean there aren't great bands now, they just aren't as popular. I'd say check out Norah Jones for someone with talent who has made it, and Lake Street Dive for a band that hasn't quite yet.
But he's not done. He,like Bruce or Bob Dylan will never run out of material.Especially now....
Emerald kat Alabama Shakes are pretty legit too. But ...I'm not seeing current incarnations of like, weird original indie rock like the pixies, Elliott smith, sparklehorse, Jeff Buckley, etc etc...
Happy 70th Birthday, You Legendary Piano Man!
♥️❤️♥️HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY FAVOURITE MUSICIAN!!! Wow Billy you're 70 years YOUNG now🤗
Because he needs more bread in his jar
Congratulations
God for 70 he looks 20 years younger than his age
The prelude into angry young man will always hold a place in my heart. Just the sheer songwriting and piano ability displayed there is incredible, and it always even gets my heart going in a way, like I hold my breath because I'm just in awe of how incredible it sounds. I'm terrible at describing the feeling, but I also get it with one of Walk the Moon's songs, "Work this Body." It has an amazing crescendo moment and then goes right back into it and I have listened to it so many times at this point.
Billy Joel is just so cool. I could listen to him tell stories all day long.
NOBODY wrote lyrics like the great Billy Joel! Such a talent!
I couldn’t name the top 5 because every Billy Joel song would make the list.
Yes, She's Always a Woman to Me
Maybe we can make it the Top 555...I think I could fit 'em all in that...
Billy Joel’s lyrics are terrible, a lot of them.

He is such a great musician. That song is mesmerizing.

Daniel Sather Yeah I agree to you.
Love Billy Joel! So much talent - writing, musically, voice, everything!

Scenes from an Italian Restaurant it's definitely the best Billy Joel song ever! I love so many of his songs. He is really one of the best! I love you Billy Joel. 💕
This one is my absolute favourite, however he has so many. I also love Captain Jack.
I've seen him live, excellent.

Scenes from an Italian restaurant is definitely his greatest ever song. Can't wait to hear him perform it live again in 2024 in Cardiff, Wales

Stairway to heaven, scenes from an Italian restaurant, Bohemian Rhapsody are probably the top they have that same feel when listening to them tbh
Jake Marsing
You’re 1,000% correct!!!!
He's right. Scenes from an Italian Restaurant is his best song.
Glad that “You may be right” made it on that list, such a great song!
Big Shot !
Mine too!!! My wife would scream at me if I didn’t she loves that song.
Billy's just a regular, funny, genuine kind of guy. I love that he put scenes from an Italian restaurant as #1.

I have a tattoo “Vienna waits for you…” it’s such a meaningful song, it touches my heart in such a way!
Love that! I named my daughter Vienna. She was at a Billy Joel concert right before she was born.
"She's Always a Woman" 🎶

So underrated

Billy Joel is underappreciated by many people, but he is truly one of the great musical talents of the last half century
He's really not. That's why he sells out shows. Not everyone is underappreciated.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Billy about 15 times. The Last Play at Shea was by far his best show. One of the All-time greats
I did a job at the Old Trafford stadium, back in 2018, for Billy Joel's concert. He was incredible and I was happy to have been working right at the front. I loved every minute of it!
Scenes from an Italian Restaurant - Such a deserving number 1.
That's my pick, too!

David Oatman .. 💛🎹💛
great story. roughly what year was that?
That's cool! Can't imagine Billy opening for the Doobs!!!! But then in high school we had some long forgotten British group perform at our Homecoming and the opening act was The Who!!! They had just released the Tommy opera and they sang the whole thing! They were booked a year previously.
Wow, just wow.
Great story, thanks for sharing. I saw Billy at Petco Part recently and he sure is one cool guy and I can definitely see him saying that. Love the Doobies too!
One of the greatest!!! Writes the music, writes the lyrics!! Genius!!!
Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) is climbing to the top of my list...
Uptown Girl and the Longest Time was 1&2 for me but after the birth of my own daughter Lullabye resonates so much within me that it went from 3 to 1 for me
Michel Plaxton Wholeheartedly agree that it should’ve been easily in the top 3!
Lullabye is just gorgeous.

Nina Blaze What about David Bowie?
+Dylan Murphy She was talking about intelligent, experienced artists, not gods.
dov linhos Fair enough.
And some continue to write good stuff and get nominated for awards right alongside "new" artists (Sting, ahem). James Taylor and Paul Simon and Jackson Brown still write good music too. Mariah is not in her 50s even, let alone her 60s. She is not Billy's contemporary.
In my opinion, he'll never be "done". Love him so very much 💓
Jeanae Rowley Yes would love to hear more orgrinial songs from him. Although we as fans must remember touring takes *ALLOT* out of our favorite musicians. 😧😔🎤

I had the chance to see Billy in his so called "last concert" in Latin America. It was a dream come true. When the time came to pick between Vienna and Just The Way you are, the crow was so loud with both them that he decided to both.
What a legend 🤙🏼
Billy Joel is so amazing. He was before & during my time but I still love his stuff. He is one of a few performers/bands I encourage younger people to hear
"Vienna Waits for You" saved my life when I was 18 years old.
summyb saves me weekly
summyb been my favorite since I discovered the song 25 years ago in college.
Julie Marks Great history!!
His delivery is about perfect.. he needs to be the Band leader on a show somewhere. (btw, whoever wrote the 'Piano Man' joke needs to marry me. Now.)
I loved the River of Dreams one too.
What a legend! What a catalog of music. Thank you Billy.
4 of his top 5 are on my top list as well! Vienna and Scenes from an Italian Restaurant are my absolute favs!
What are the four
Dude, he could have a whole new show doing impressions and telling stories.
wonderful how he can laugh and ridicule himself. Billy doesn't take himself too seriously, that's great!
The GOAT yeah, and that's not the rule but the exception with most super duper awesome artists
+The GOAT well... Kanye west is human, and he's the exact opposite of what we're talking about. He's belligerent, pompous and self-righteous. I can't take an artist seriously when they pride themselves on being a genius, whether they actually are or not.
"that's great"?

An extremely intelligent and experienced songwriter. So glad he didn't push it further then he felt is should have unlike some of the oldies today who don't know they incapable of writing music on the level they used to. "I thought I had my say". Best possible response.
