A band that I got into in my high school days but never saw live because they broke up in 1974/5. The Old Grey Whistle Test was essential viewing for UK music fans back in the 70s. So many classic artists had performances archived by that show to be enjoyed by future generations.
Movin' Out, Just the way You Are, She's Always A Woman, Only The Good Die Young... all four were top 40 hits off of Billy Joel's mega selling 1977 album The Stranger. The album stayed in the top 40 album charts for 70 weeks and was the biggest selling album for Columbia Records during the 1970s.
This is such a quintessential 70s pop, jazz, New York and American classic. It voices and captures the frustration of late 20th century middle class ambitions so clearly. Joel's character knows about the sacrifices his parents, family and community made for his comfortable life and appreciates them but is impatient to make his own mark on the world. By painting such a specific and personal picture of a time and place he conversely universalizes his story, as he does in so much of his music. His stories are of weary, wary but still optimistic characters finding their way in the world and the portraits are tender but unsparing. He loves his home but he's outgrown it, and is now MOVIN' OUT, as so many young adults do. It's that ambition that moves life forward.
The coolest part of this is hearing the audience's silence when Billy announces the song title of what will become a classic. It's kind of like watching The Beatles write "Get Back" in the Peter Jackson documentary.
Those first twenty-seven seconds or so, with that bit of piano business before he introduces the song and then when he finally starts... Awesome stuff. Imagine being there for this.
Have had a crush on your beautiful face & beautiful eyes since my 20s. But, also your sweet, intelligent nature. Have seen so many R/R concerts. You are phenomenal, my friend. God Bless. That's all. 💛

I wish they'd make a biopic about Billy. He's had a very interesting life.
Oh they probably will thats Hollywoods new thing “biopic’s”
lifelong fan of billy joel and this is my first time seeing this performance. this piano-forward and super funky sound just hits you at your core. absolutely killer.
Hello Miwa,
Is nice meeting you here
How're you doing?
Thanks for the love and support for years ❤️
Billy Joel has always been a very unique and clever musician.
The Lords of 52nd Street were such a killer band. Billy's band now is great too, but this group was excellent.
When I was a kid(born in ‘71), I was always thought of Billy Joel as sounding so “New York”. Still do, actually.
Love this version . For some reason everyone sounded great on the old grey whistle test .
Thanks for your love and support all through this times, it’s been a wonderful feeling praying for my fans around the world. Though I rarely comment here on my RUclips pages, I was attracted by the emotions in your comment. I’ll like we get along and stay in touch. Where are you streaming from.🌹🎶
