- Billy Joel performing Movin' Out live in 2008.
Billy Joel live in 2008 in Japan. "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)" is a song written and recorded by Billy Joel. The track details the singer's disgust with the upwardly-mobile bourgeois aspirations of working and lower-middle class New Yorkers who take pride at working long hours in order to afford the outward signs of having "made it" Named characters have stereotypically ethnic names (Anthony, Mama Leone, Sergeant O'Leary, Mr. Cacciatore) and their jobs are blue-collar. Joel considers their rejection of their working-class roots (trading a Chevy for a Cadillac and buying a house in Hackensack, New Jersey) to be ultimately futile; in the end, the rewards are a "heart attack" or "a broken back". Near the end of the recording is the sound of a car starting up and driving away, and it was actually the bass player's (Doug Stegmeyer) 1960s Corvette that was used. However, in the single mix, the car engine sound was removed.
According to Joel, Anthony isn't a real person, but rather "every Irish, Polish, and Italian kid trying to make a living in the U.S."
The song originally appeared on his 1977 album, The Stranger. A live performance of it can be heard on 2000 Years: The Millennium Concert.

Very good. One of the better interpretations of this particular comment trend. 👍
ac ac ac ac
I love you.
heeeeey you copied the comment on the studio version : /
🎉🎉
very catchy and one of the best songs ever
+CaptainStolsie such a badass song
CaptainStolsie Ya
True
This is my favorite song of all time
if not his best song, probably in his best 3..
Billy's voice is the only one that seems to be as good or better with age.
word
Not quite. Steven Tyler as well.
Ross Viles He always sounded like shit, so I guess he sounds as good today as he ever did.
TopTenGamer So does Elton Johns
David gilmour still sounds pretty good
For a minute there I thought he was gonna sing it in Japanese. xp
word
+Robert Shum i thought spanish this song has a spanish vibe to it lol
Ok No it doesn’t
Ok but this was in Japan and he counted down in Japanese...
Same😂
His voice sounds in great shape, same as he was in his 20's... Amazing!!
Hackensack. Cadillac. Way whack. Heart attack ack ack. This is nearly as punk as you can get. Argue with a crazy mind?
He put that in the song to make fun of the way that vinyl records skip.
Sounds a bit like cockney ryhming slang
Nah, you should hear some of the modern ‘punk’ music
Man...when you hear this song you can see, smell, hear and feel 1977 all over again.
Richard Egan too right my friend.
unless u were born in the 2000s...
All over again.
@Richard Egan I'm a little late to the party, but if you're still out there, I am wistful to know what 1977 smelled like. I was a 1978 baby, which sounded like Linda Ronstadt and Pat Benatar, and smelled faintly of Swisher Sweets tobacco. But I was barely sentient yet so... take it for what it's worth.
If they had a car on stage and revved the engine toward the end it would have been 10x better
or at least the sound effect at 2:53 or 2:54 wherever that should go.
I listen to this song way too much.. This song is just one of the world's beauties. Usually I am a grumpy person, but when I listen to this song I feel like the happiest person ever and like I can walk on the clouds. I am grinning so hard I am surprised my lips haven't ripped.
Heard Billy performing this song in Houston last year, the saxo part gave me chills that I had never experienced before, just amazing, thank you Billy for your amazing music, true music that inspires emotions and feelings.
lucky u
The “sax section” really takes it to another level 🎷🎷🎷
My all time favorite....Wonder if anyone else in 2019 feels the same...
It is my favorite but very close with Vienna and SFAIR
I'm here after Watching Panic! At The Disco .. Is so amazing Song
Ilham Urie same i have found so many cool songs cause of brendon
Ilham Urie me
I'm not a PATD fan but Urie is very talented and possibly a better singer than Joel, but idk, there's something about the original versions of songs
Drew Anderson definitely not better than Billy Joel, no one can beat Billy.
Griffin Awesome I think Urie has more technical skill vocally, but I prefer Joel as an artist
This man gets better with age, and Crystal Taliefero is still a Babe ....
He's not just singing and playing g he's telling a story
He sounds great! Didn't know he can sing like that in his age
First heard glass houses at a house party at 17. I am now 58 and still in love with Billy joel.
We are the same age
Saving every penny to see him in Pennsylvania 😅
How was it?
You’re movin’ up!
I played this when my sister announced to my mom she was moving in with her boyfriend and accidentally made her cry
This is my neighbour's favourite song whether he likes it or not
He sounds so young!
I love this dude.
shizgriff everyone does!
Apparently he wrote this song about me.. 🤷🏾♂️
God bless him, at this age still kicks ass without missing a beat. Absolutely no change.
Hey, I just bought a house in Hackensack.
Kev Dav Who needs a house there?
Who needs a house down in Hackensack?
Is that what you get for your money?
I like how he tells his crew what song they’re about to play.
This guy is awesome and it's definitely his best song
No, I think piano man is his best one Yknow?
Me encanta
After all these years, this guy never lost a single step.
I could watch and listen to Billy Joel all day!!!😍
I’d love to see Billy Joel in concert these days! My favorite piano man!
2:26 I had the same reaction as the dude in the background. amazing performance
Chris Fendt yeah you notice that guy quickly with his hands flying!
I think like everything about this song especially the rythmic piano part sticks out to me its just perfect for the melody
I highly respect Billy Joel. He made me interested in piano
Love this song. My full name is Anthony and I indeed worked at a grocery store saving my pennies for someday........
TONY MONTGOMERY yep definitely anthony
@@raihanislam912 the name Anthony is really commonly shortened to tony... so calm down
@@holly8924 I was joking when I said that but I see how it could be seen as aggressive, that's my b
@@raihanislam912 haha fair, I’m sorry then :))
@@holly8924 it's chill 👍🏾
Billy aged like a fine fuckin wine. What an absolute lad.
Recently I found a lost bolt on some street in Los Angeles so I picked it up
and it's around here somewhere. It got me thinking about this song
where they say don't try to argue with a crazy mind. A lot of other stuff
to this song but that's an important message that I use in daily life.
Pizza in Los angeles usually costs 6 bucks for a big slice but bolts like that
cost about 12 cents. This song is about value and the price of money
and living space. When I see a Cadillac I want to smash it but never do.
General Motors is a huge trash corporation but not the worst.
James Kendall Bro your post was an enjoyable read for me, I can't quite put my finger on why but it's almost like I could hear your voice through the text in my head... your voice sounded like the Pepperidge Farms guy and I thank you for that.
Don Draper on bass ladies and gentlemen...
🇯🇵👊💥💥💥サイコー💥💥💥👊🇯🇵
Sounds as good as he did in the 70's!
Anthony works in the grocery store
Savin' his pennies for someday
Mama Leone left a note on the door
She said, Sonny, move out to the country
Workin' too hard can give you
A heart attack (ack)
You oughta know by now (oughta know)
Who needs a house out in Hackensack
Is that what you get with your money
It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
Mama if that's movin' up
Then I'm movin' out
I'm movin' out
Sergeant O'Leary is walkin' the beat
At night he becomes a bartender
He works at Mister Cacciatore's down
On Sullivan Street
Across from the medical center
He's tradin' in his Chevy for a Cadillac
You oughta know by now
And if he can't drive
With a broken back
At least he can polish the fenders
It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
Mama if that's movin' up
Then I'm movin' out
I'm movin' out
You should never argue with a crazy mind (mmm)
You oughta know by now
You can pay Uncle Sam with the overtime
Is that all you get for your money
If that's what you have in mind
If that's what you're all about
Good luck movin' up
'Cause I'm moving out
I'm moving out
I'm moving out
Amazing quality video of this. Looks and sounds like an official dvd :) I do think it should say 2006 though, in the description.

I love the way Crystal Taliafero gyrates her hips as she plays her heart out on the saxophone. She’s so sexy!!! 😍
What a legend :)
The brexiters' anthem right there.😁😂
Heyyy...3y and still nothing! 😂😂😂
70's era Billy Joel was the best.
Very clever lyrics as always and great how he fits them in. The piano bit near the end always sounds a bit like a wee nod to Elton which can be no bad thing as I think he was very influenced by him.
Billy and Elton are THE PIANO MEN
ichi!ni!san!sh!🇯🇵🇯🇵
Como eu amoooo essa música cara !!!
Algum brasileiro aí ?
Nothing hits me like HE WORKS AT MR CACCIATORES DOWN ON SULLIVAN STREET
Across from the medical center always gets me. As of its clue ad to where to work as a bartender. Doctors need a break too
Masterpiece!
Voor Anthony korst van oma Thea perlot dit is weer eens iets anders als rappen ! Hoop toch dat je een beetje te pruimen vind groetjes oma!

This song reminds me of Wings.
Billy Joel is one of my favorites and he always cool
Fantastic version!!!!!!
time flies that quicker than i can notice the houses at south hackensack are very highly demanded by now 2024. one of the radient places in NJ.
"'Mister Cacciatores Down on Sullivan Street across from the Medical Centre" !!!
EVerything sounds great, and I dont want to sound negative because it does sound good. And the drummer does a great job, but something is just missing without the hard hitting Liberty Devito on the drums
Voor mijn kleinzoon Anthiony groetjes oma Thea!
My fav live performance of this song!!
this song is better and entertain me compare to JB or Taylor.s
+chad pressley lol
sally nie 10/10 spelling btw neither of those singers is relevant anymore

I LOVE IT
Ngl it sounds the same in a very good way.
2:27 That's what I'm talking about...
Love it
John Candy rocking the sax there!
Whenever we played this song in the car I used to think that the CD had a scratch at Heart attack, Cadillac and Mama,
It’s mind you should never argue with a crazy mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mind you outta know by now.
Not mama
My personal favorite song by him
Half his band look like mafia hitmen.
Billy himself can be an extra on the Sopranos
what’s the name of the saxophonist with the long leather jacket please?
Not really a concert person, but this would definitely be an exception! My fiancé and I love you Billy Joel!
Chuck Burgi feels bad that he's playing Liberty Devitto's drum parts and is probably writing him an apology letter right now...
Ahh absolutely brilliant billy Joel ''my hero ''and he accepts we all get older' bald ,plump''but REAL 'he is spot on100% a real man and A REAL STAR 'and also his brilliant band'
Lyrics are priceless and a great message. It blows me away he wrote these as such a young age!! Ease up on yourself baby Billy Joel!!
That drummer though!!
My all-time favorite song by Mr. Billy Joel
Insanely better with age ☂️🥹💐🥹☘️💕💕💕
I still remember how big that album was❤️🔥
Ugh everything about this song is perfection
Yes. 🌄🎶👌🎵
God I love this song!
That was amazing
You know I think why classic music sounds better. I think that without auto tune and unnatural sounds ruin it the most but it also seems like a old microphone has a better sound like it has a little ring or echo to it
why do i feel that this is autobiographical.. ???? for sure!! great song!
I've always loved Billy's music but the way he treated Liberty Devitto after all those years together made me lose respect for him.
nice
Can’t wait to see him at MSG. Anyone know why he doesn’t use In-Ears?
There is no room for a mistake in that song
I should never gave into Grandma.
I miss Liberty DeVito!
Ik I'm probably gunna sound crazy asking this but does anyone know how to play the part after and it seems such a waste of time. The little piano beat. Its like 3 notes.
+Shivers thank you!
54 people don’t know by now .
this song is fantastic.....god bless Billy!!
Can't wait !!! June 6th !!!
laura rosado
Going next week!!!! Can't wait!!!
