Lyrics:
You get a shiver in the dark
It’s raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel all right when you hear that music ring
You step inside but you don’t see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound
Way on downsouth way on downsouth London town
You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords
Mind he’s strictly rhythm he doesn’t want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn’t mind if he doesn’t make the scene
He’s got a daytime job he’s doing alright
He can play honky tonk just like anything
Saving it up for Friday night
With the Sultans with the Sultans of Swing
And a crowd of young boys they’re fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don’t give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain’t what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans played Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
‘Thank you goodnight now it’s time to go home’
and he makes it fast with one more thing
‘We are the Sultans of Swing'

Let’s be honest: this is not your first time here. And not your last either…
Hats off to Dire Straits for one of the finest live performances in music history!
First time for me but not the last for sure
Back again for 28th time 😂
I've lost count!
You got it right, Sir.
Come here a few times a week, cheers 🍻
Headphones on, volume to the max. 70 years old and this makes me sweat with joy. One of the great live performances ever.
ı agrreee
The same here, the only difference is I am 42.
me too, i watch/listen to this frequently (73 & still rocking)
Me, I'm 79, I totally agree with you 😂
Don't think that he's a beginner 😂
Is anyone watching in 2024?
Here I am !
❤
Yee
Hey I am
Absolutely I am
Best version..... And what a phenomenal job by that drummer
If he played any harder his arms would've fallen off!
Story has it his dad had come to see him play for the first time. Well what a performance he gave his old man.......
THIS. Haven't heard a version with him hammering like this.
I love how they softened it up leading into the chorus then started banging again.
That fill in the middle is so outrageous. Wish I could have just the drummer cam.
Those young people witnessed probably the best live performance by any group ever, wish I had been there.
Sim! ❤
Me too!
I'd be honored if some Dire Straits fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal RUclips performance of ON EVERY STREET in tribute to the genius songwriting of Mark Knopfler. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.
lol The greatest live performance ever ? Are you insane It’s good But give me a break man I know you have post “I just saw my favorite band on RUclips and it gave me the chills” feeling But come on The more you say stuff like that The less great they seem because from where I am standing It appears their fans are crazy and unrealistic
@@WdawgSmith Really? then what is the best?
That drummer is a BEAST
That would be Terry Williams. One of the very best rock drummers.
Straight up!
It’s a documentary about him. Living a simple life with his town people, and said” I was just a drummer in the Dire Straits “ hut off for him.
@@user-zd7yp5gx6bthis guy said “UM ACKSHULLY 🤓 “
they do not go with the song. They should be more chilled
I don't think Mark knopfler gets anywhere near the amount of respect. One of the absolute all time greats. I feel he gets forgotten in the conversation. This absolutly backs me up!
@anthonywalker6623 and he is today yet one of the humblest person i ever known in that world
Isn’t it wonderful that this has been watched 242 million times
yup deserves it, as a teen who just found this song recently, it’s a beautiful getaway from all of the newer music of my generation, a true gem
I'm back here for the 20th time!
I've contributed at least 50 views to that. I never get tired of this performance !
True, but it's us same million people.
I watched alchemy live around 100 times, since 14 years. Had a band played this song for ever. ❤❤❤❤
Don't know what's more impressive:
- The ease of delivering the best guitar solo in history by Mark Knopfler
- The one-of-a-kind drumming of Terry Williams
- The entire setup of the song... the build-up is crazy, the delivery amazing...
- The fun these lads have on stage whilst performing such a complex song
Goosebumps EVERY SINGLE TIME I listen to this... Whish I was there that day!
БРАТ , я солидарен с твоим высказыванием !!! На все 1000% :))). Привет из РОССИИ:)
Y yo, quisiera haber estado ahi y cerrar los ojos y bailar❤

One of the most incredible drumming performances I've ever seen anywhere at any time. Truly magnificent.
Terry Williams is GOAT
Terry Williams from Swansea seen hom live in maesteg 25yrs ago😢
It really is something special, isn't it? Phenomenal. And this comes from a Rush fan who has seen and heard Neil Peart for thousands of hours.
Рекомендую Вам посмотреть выступления барабанщика Кози Пауэла. Сольники у него были с 1972 -1978
It is indeed spectacular, however, you should look for some live performances of Tornado Of Souls by Megadeth, that drumming is truly impressive.
That drummer is absolutely out of this world.
Terry Williams Swansea boy 🏴
@@ibellchristian9773 i always believed he might be a sorcerer of some sort ;)
Uffa! Non c'è solo il.batterista. Ma siete dei fissati!
I’m watching this for the first time. Spine chillingly good. That’s a band in perfect harmony. What a song, what a performance.
I guarantee that u are gonna watch this 100 times more at least.
Oh lordy, your first time? I'm 77 and this is the absolute best live performance ever. Watched this version over and over! Welcome to heaven.
The drummer was also playing the guitar licks. Damn this is good
I find his(drummer) performance compelling . Water retaining wall, I have already posted two years ago. so let me say that listening to this I think, think yes that every note played fits in perfectly and I would have played written it so, but you know I could not have ....
The great Terry Williams - He’s on here sometimes…
That was the first thing I noticed, "the guy on drums is doing WAY more than what's on the studio recording" 😅
@@nickphauxhe's talking about how the drummer was mimicking the guitar with his mouth because it's funny looking. Everybody is doing way more than the studio version, hell around 6:00 they just go into a jam session that's not even in the original song lol.
@@nickphaux much-much better that any studio version. Seems he's gone crazy behind his drums :)
For these 10 Mins and 46 Secs, Mark and his boys weren't the Dire Straits, they truly transformed into the sultans of swing.
This comment definitely deserves more Likes.
So true
It's Freaking Genius sincerely i listen to it everytime I shower .That's a bit personal but it's the music . Motivational THERE'S NO WORD TO DESCRIBE THIS IF ANYONE CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT ITS EXCELLENCE MAN I SO CAN'T GO BACK TO THE STUDIO VERSION....
You just echoed my sentiments brother 🙂
Yes 😍
That drummer was killing it...he stole the show, what a beast !!!
That drummer, GOD damn, out of the universe, godlike performance ❤
I live in the same village as the drummer Terry Williams. Pontardawe Swansea. Nice guy.
Tell him, he's a beast on the drumset
Yep , Terry kicked it out the park on this one 😊

This might be one of the best executed performances in rock history
Non potrebbe....è la miglior esibizione della storia del rok.....
May be. Or Hendrix stealing a song from Dylan.
The best 2024 can't believe it's been that long,Mark is the Best
Para mim, SIM
Isso é verdade. Mas é uma pena que foi única. Como tantas....de tanta gente.
I have a theory. The drum fill at 2:28 to 2:35 is the reason this performance is so legendary. You can see how visibly excited Mark is after Terry finishes the fill. You literally hear the difference in energy afterwards. And it is at the perfect time because it is just as they move into the verse before the first solo. So Mark is just absolutely pumped going into the solo which propels the whole band into overtime leading to this masterpiece.
That is my favorite part too! I am a huge Mark Knopfler fan and he is amazing in this song but Terry Williams on the drums is spectacular!
Terry stole the show with that fill. One of the less talked about drummers of rock and roll, but he sure was a huge part of dire straits.
Don't forget the moment they make eye-contact and do the hook at 5:45, my favourite part of this performance.
but they surely would be practicing the song like this, no?
Reaching, a lot of the latter stages of this strike me as a bunch of world class musicians completely in sync with each other in a sort of flow state, essentially jamming, it may have been roughly rehearsed but it really does feel like (and I hope it was because I'll respect and love it even more) it's completely impromptu.
Knopfler's one fine guitar player. The casualness with which he dresses up his own familiar lines, and tosses off other lovely riffage is amazing. If you didn't see him holding a guitar, you might think he was waiting for the next bus.
Riffage. I like that. 😀
Mark is top five of all time. And I'll die on that hill forever.
@@gdeezy He's in my top 3, easily. Clean, melodic, fast. And he's just shrugging it off in this vid like it ain't no thing. Amazing.
@@antonialeigh I am probably in the same boat.
1. Lindsey Buckingham
2. Mark
3. Clapton
I can't add anything to what's been said already. This must be the absolute best live performance ever! I never tire watching it. The energy of the drummer is off the scale. Just look at his face he's like an express train. Brilliant, great, superb music making!
My dad loved dire straits, he lost his battle with cancer on boxing day 2020. This one's for you dad, I love you x
Stay strong man!Enjoy your life!
@@kostopaldo thanks, tough times for the world right now. I wasn't able to see him for most of last year, with all the lock downs. Probably for the best, I can remember him strong!
Your dad seemed like a great person for you to pay tribute to him like this. Rock on Dad!
@@eightinches6094 he was the father of 7 children. A grandfather and great grandfather. And he always stood by me, even when I messed up. Yeah he was a great man
When he retired, he did gardening for the older generation, most in their 80s. Cut their grass, bed out their gardens with beautiful flowers, that he mostly grew himself from seed or cuttings. He would pick up their medication from the chemist, never charged for anything. He always said well I'll be old like that someday, hopefully someone will look out for me. He died at age 73
"If you get to the end of a vocal and you’ve got nothing more to say, but maybe the guitar has” - Mark Knopfler
I'd be honored if some Dire Straits & Sting fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of ON EVERY STREET and ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK on my YT channel in tribute to these 2 great songwriters from the majestic city of Newcastle. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and RESPECT to the legends.
Brilliant!
Brilliant guitars do talk what a performance 💯🎸
Play me baby!
Got to be one of the best guitarists and drummers in the world.
Best guitarist ever
This is awesome. Please bring back real music and real musicians!
Listen to Rock and Metal 😉
Happiness is when the live version is better than the studio version.
And the studio is still a masterpiece
By far
Because the band is that good. Dire straits is freaking awesome live!
Which is most likely the case in rock n roll because these are true musicians, and the loved every seconds of every times they played for us.
This live version was recorded for Alchemy album
You just can't go back to the studio version after listening to this one. It's impossible.
Agreed
Totally agree
to be honest i prefer the studio version. this one is so unorganized for my taste. just an opinion
@@facucuffia6733 I see this live version as a perfect order and harmony that would have just come to life out of the chaos of a pure creative energy. In my view music in its purest expression and one of my very favorite pieces of music ever.
Yeah
By far and away the very best live performance of all time ever of any band. No question at all.
drums are too stressed
Everyone knows Knopfler is something out of this world but somehow the drummer manages to be totally something else. Like holy shit what is that
I'm not sure if the crowd realized back then, that they were witness to the best live performance ever...this is simply amazing.
I always found the instrumental at the end of the version on the album/CD to be too short, since I had heard a slightly longer version on the radio years ago, but this is waaay longer than that!
What about little wing at the el mocambo
There are many breathtaking live performances out there from these years, many criminally underrated or unknown
It sure is amazing.
We knew.
I've heard this song a thousand times, and I've never heard it like THIS. This has got to be one of the most extraordinary drum performances I've ever seen.

56 million views? holy fucking shit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that says everything about how great this song is. Mark Knopfler is one of the most overlooked and underrated guitarists/composer's in the world. he is a fucking GENIUS !
Justin Rippon Rihanna and the other soulless puppets might get close to that through brainwashing people with radio and being on the tv, constantly drummed into people's heads but Mark has done this on his own with his music without the total manipulating marketing. that says so much. he is one of the most overlooked and underrated composer's of all time in my opinion. the man is a genius.
TruthSeeker Truth and Justin. You both share my passion for this man's music, lyrics and exquisite guitar innovation. Best wishes
TruthSeeker PS wonderful comment. The afore mentioned soulless puppet's could not play two bars of this song without having to retire exhausted to count there millions. They are not musically acclaimed as is MK
+Peter West thanks bro, glad other people out there can see the reality too!Knopfler is a huge inspiration of mine, if others looked up to a real man and true musician like this they might not be a bunch of brain dead zombies. sometimes its hard to live in a world where the puppets are being spoonfed to people through the hypno box, all I can say is... 56 million views without having to brainwash people with newspapers, tv news, music channels etc... that says more about how great MK actually is compared with these soulless clowns and the other thing is, look how long Knopfler has been doing this, he recently played a show where I live in Scotland, do we think rihanna and gaga and the rest of the soulless crew will still be doing that in 30 years? lol I already know the answer !!!! :)
+TruthSeeker _56 million views? holy fucking shit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that says everything about how great this song is._

I think Mark is so incredible because he is left handed but plays the guitar right-handed. His dominant left hand lets him shred with both speed and amazing control. Just a thought. At any rate, the man is other-worldly.

It makes me sad that with the music industry the way it is….we’ll never have anything like this ever again. This is the absolute pinnacle
Ditto to that 😊
Just cannot believe they are so damn good. Nothing like it around any more.
As someone said in response to another Dire Strait song: no matter how good things are, things can go bad, but you do the Walk Of Life until things are good again. What a band; what a performance! May we experience these moments in all our lives and appreciate it when it happens!
Or Pinochle?
I mean, we have Polyphia if you want guitar virtuosos. Lots of amazing lyricists too, though nobody comes to mind rn. The drummer from Ne Obliviscaris, Dan Priesland, is superb as well. Is anyone close to being the whole package like Dire Straits were? Possible, though me choosing someone would just say something about me rather than the musician.
Terry Williams is the best drummer I have ever heard, 60's, 70's, 80's and on. He is the consummate drummer. There has never been anyone like him anywhere, ever. He has perfect rhythm in this cut.
He's good tho. But u have to consider jonh bonham
And Ian Paice/Cozy Powell/Roger Taylor/Phil Collins/Ginger Baker, etc...
True, but Terry Williams is the best in my opinion.

He is not as smooth in his transitions as Terry Williams. Williams knows where he is going in advance and stays ahead of the beat thereby leading the entire song.
The ability of dire straits is to make live songs better than studio versions. Absolutely amazing

My eyes deceive me, he's right, it is a Schecter. At roughly 5:35 you can see the logo isn't Fender; it's black, just like that of Schecter on their strat style guitars. Javi G Nizar GUEDIRA
I never felt like the Drummer ever got his well deserved props. Salute.
I think that as well. He’s a great drummer!
Agreed
I noticed that too , listen to the entire alchemy album the whole band down to the pianist is ridiculous. Tunnel of love is mind blowing. Great live album. 👍
@05Ás Teitur Andrason see him in live Aid 1985 he was brilliant
Terry Williams as a good rock drummer... he replaced DS's original drummer Pick Withers, who, in my opinion, is the BEST drummer to complement Mark's guitar playing. Period.
Love how everyone in the band got there moment to shine even the piano guy got a solo in
Terry was on absolute fire. Such an amazing performance.
Terry Williams taking drumming to the next level, phenomenal performance 🥲
The drummer is Sir Terry Williams, no need to thank me
@@gustavobarreto80 a deserved knighthood
Ahh yo lo preguntaba aqui aparecia Terry con su bateria como el Dios de los mares in reible compas buenisimo es que un grupo asi deben ser todos figuras
Terry Williams band ^_^
I don't know why, but this performance gives me the most intense goosebumps.
I know why, it's incredible!!!
I feel exactly the same
cuz you're witnessing true greatness and your brain can sense it
because you know what's up!!
you are not alone :)
I'm going to tell my kids that this is music.
That's what you call chemistry as a band. I'm quite certain all the dynamics were not rehearsed just felt and communicated while playing. It's an amazing feeling having that kind of Chemistry with a group of musicians.
God created heaven and earth.
Creation was not perfect.
He gave a guitar to Mark Knopfler.
Dire Straits played "Sultans of Swing".
Creation is perfect.
Amen brotha
+Pascal VDA On the seventh day God rested, and let Mark Knopfler play solo.
this is one of the greatest live performances of all time

this is one of the greatest live performances of all time
( C'est une des plus grandes performances sur scène de tous les temps. )
nah....it has to be Queen @ Live Aid
@@bitwise.a1Nah this one is the real deal. Best ever recorded live performance.
I was there!
@@ouidaevans2611 I was two weeks old. where were you standing? What was the crowd? Please tell some interesting of tis concert! Thank you! Maybe you were in your young ages.
Best live performance of any band I can think of period!! Rock, country jazz, blues.
So you didn’t see Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac? I’ve Got A Mind To Give Up Living?
We all know the Dire Straits and this song. But the drummer, OMG THE DRUMMER! I would love to see a full video just with him, he is stunning, incredible, awesome
One of the greatest guitar performances and one of the greatest drumming performances all happening at once. Mind boggling.
The endurance and stamina, he’s not just tapping mindlessly on the kit, he’s all over the place 😳
Absolutely superb music

La mejor presentación de una banda en la historia
The drumming in this “live” performance is off the scale-10 out of 10!
The drummer is Terry Williams the former drum player of the wales heavy progressive band "man"
The drummer in any band is the orchestrator. If they are on it usually ends up being an epic performance. This is prime example
AMIT SHAH 35
It kinda impress me more than MK guitar, probably cz I already knew what to expect from MK.
Insane actually 🔥
I miss when artists had to be skilled in different ways. This was more authentic and genuine.
REAL MUSIC ..❤❤❤❤😊😊😊 AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL , W0W🎉🎉😊❤
If this isn't one of the greatest musical masterpieces of all time, I don't know what is! This is as close to perfection that anybody can really get.
I saw the Doors once before Jim Morrison died. He was not high. It was the best concert i ever saw live and i saw some great ones, it to me was a gift
I'm not a band loving guy but i completely agree, this tune is fucking amazing!!!!! I prefer the 7 inch version though :/
Agreed. The changes in tempo and volume, several times. Mark paints a 3D landscape. Their musicality is fantastic. Then their integrity, when they paused their Brothers in Arms tour, in Australia, to recharge. On their own dime.
@@williambourg7113 Really I’m big time jealous 🥰
Listening in 2023..just pure classic ❤
2.33 when the drummer does a monster fill and Mark and John look at him and then each other and just laugh at how ridiculously good he is
It was nothing Keith Moon didn't do time and again.
What's drummer's name?
@@user-jf4bs3si5c Terry Williams
@@hereandthere4763 yes but Terry could actually keep time on a regular basis. As talented as Mr. Moon was, he was a bit all over the shop with regards to time.
@@justinolson9336 Apparently he didn't need to keep time because the level of musicianship in the Who was such that he didn't need to. Entwhistle and Moon weren't a normal rhythm section. The band seemed to have lead bass and drums as well as lead vocals and guitar, though Townsend often played rhythm guitar to Entwhistle's lead bass. Keith's timing could be very precise when he wanted it to be - just listen to Happy Jack.
I am super jealous of everyone that was there. Wow
The song that made me realize that rock can be so much more than three chords and a cloud of dust.
Mark Knopfler is a living legend.
most underated band in the world.
Trevin Ellison Rory Gallagher ,I agree there Trevin, just love knopfler and his unique style,ILove this version, and I love playing it,just wish I was a quarter the guitarist knopfler is.p s thanks for getting me listening to the Alman brothers, what a band, gteat sound.🍀🎸
The problem is they don't have many songs. But half of the songs are great, although you have to be in a certain mood to listen to Dire Straits.
