Ahh yo lo preguntaba aqui aparecia Terry con su bateria como el Dios de los mares in reible compas buenisimo es que un grupo asi deben ser todos figuras
I have listened to this so many times and watched it plenty. I finally realized how much it was a pinnacle for a whole band. You notice the soloing and the drumming but the reality is that all parts work together to make an incredible piece of music and show. Thankfully, it was recorded for us to enjoy today.
I have a theory. The drum fill at 2:28 to 2:35 is the reason this performance is so legendary. You can see how visibly excited Mark is after Terry finishes the fill. You literally hear the difference in energy afterwards. And it is at the perfect time because it is just as they move into the verse before the first solo. So Mark is just absolutely pumped going into the solo which propels the whole band into overtime leading to this masterpiece.
Reaching, a lot of the latter stages of this strike me as a bunch of world class musicians completely in sync with each other in a sort of flow state, essentially jamming, it may have been roughly rehearsed but it really does feel like (and I hope it was because I'll respect and love it even more) it's completely impromptu.
Dire Straits was a band that always made life worth living. There was always something so soothing about Mark's voice and the way he played the guitar, really made you feel some inner peace
This has to be, hands down, one of the best live performances I have ever watched. The drummer especially needs to be singled out because he elevates this song to another level.
Knopfler is truly "THE GUITAR GOD" but the Drummer is on an equal per....totally unbelievable performance by everyone! It doesn't get any better than this !!!!!
Guitar is NOT a monotheistic religion. He is _A_ god, there is no _the_ god in guitar. Relax, Knopfler has a VERY secure place in the pantheon atop Mt. Olympus alongside guys like Hendrix, Gilmour, BB King (all 3 Kings actually), EVH et al. It's a patheon...
Best live performance ever. Just two guitars, drums, bass and keyboards and they sound like an orchestra. The dynamics, feel and virtuosity of this performance is mind blowing. Mark Knopfler is a genius. His plucking style and meticulous touch make his guitar sing. Hardly any overdrive or effects, the tone is all in his fingers. The whole band are absolutely fantastic but he is a one off. Simply wonderful. 👏
And the sound and production engineers did a fantastic job. Every note is perfect. The drums don't have that thin or muffled sound that they did in the 70's, or the overblown reverb sound they did in the 80's through 90's. Amazing by the performers and producers!
I'm so agree with you because the best of the best besides DIRE STRAITS like ROLLING STONES, BILLY IDOL, DEPECHE MODE, QUEEN, SUPER TRAMP, AL STEWARD, BRYAN FERRY even WHITESNAKE and so many more are pioneers of the greatest music ever.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Terry Williams is the best drummer I have ever heard, 60's, 70's, 80's and on. He is the consummate drummer. There has never been anyone like him anywhere, ever. He has perfect rhythm in this cut.
He is not as smooth in his transitions as Terry Williams. Williams knows where he is going in advance and stays ahead of the beat thereby leading the entire song.
Best guitarist and oh man that drummer is just not human. Never came across such a beautifully timed and synchronised performance. These guys ARE the Sultans of Swing.
Charanjit Bhal No, the drummer is human playing real drums and that's what makes him great. None of that 2 beat electric drum shit for these people. This is REAL music.
I only hope Terry Williams gets to read the comments on here. Drummers often dont get the recognition they deserve, and his drumming on this song is out of this world!
one million times and much many more times I 100% agree with you! Williams is INSANE!! But what really scares me, is the ease of Mark Knopfler. Looking here, looking there, doing some groceries... :-| , talking to all the other members where and when to change tempo etc.. A bit of smiling like: "well, played pretty well today"... His limits are actually the band itself....
I noticed that too , listen to the entire alchemy album the whole band down to the pianist is ridiculous. Tunnel of love is mind blowing. Great live album. 👍
Terry Williams as a good rock drummer... he replaced DS's original drummer Pick Withers, who, in my opinion, is the BEST drummer to complement Mark's guitar playing. Period.
06Oct16....It's so lovely tell yer mother. Puts today's ' wannabes ' to shame. Good music while toss in' back a few with same-aged friends. Good man that Mark and his boys....
Mind-blowingly good. As far as live performances go, they nailed every single aspect. Talk about a band being on top of its game and completely flawlessly-coherent. Mark's muscle memory and multi-tasking are out of this world. How he can play lead like that whilst simultaneously singing, performing and interacting with the band is unbelievable. I'm not sure most appreciate how special his talent is.
An amazing performance by each member of the group. I bet the audience didn't realize they would never see a magnum opus like this for the rest of their lives.
This was Hammersmith Oden London 1983 I was at this concert and I was 29. I am now 68 and over the years I have attended many great concerts. Led Zeppelin Earls a court 1975 Queen Wembley 1986 Springsteen Wembley 1985 Genesis Wembley 1986 and many others. This will truly always be among those memorable and greatest musical experiences I have had Mark Knopfler and the rest of the band were completely in the zone this night. He plays with an arrogance and rightly so he knows how good he is and he knew his audience knew also. A simply brilliant musician surrounded by other great musicians.
Congratulations! I live in Mexico and I think this band is wonderful, I enjoy a lot their music. In 1983 I was studing medicine, second grade, I am 59 years old. I hope someday can asist a cocert of Dire Straits. Greetins from Mexico.

Have listened to this version 100s of times. It is my top favorite guitar piece over The Wall, The Thrill is Gone, Lucille/Johnny B. Goode, and Layla, Stairway to Heaven. Sultans of Swing to me sounds very happy -- sophisticated and happy. And I like to dance so its evocation of Zydeco, gets me every time! American Woman by Lenny Kravitz fits on my list here with The Doors' Riders on the Storm and L.A. Woman, and All Along the Watch Tower for its shear creativity; plus I'm a Jimmy 4ever fan. Imagine the guitarists here, Marc Knopfler and Jimmy Hendrix playing together on Sultans of Swing & All Along the Watchtower! I would cry it would b so beautiful, V:::
This is still the most impressive guitar performance ever .it's unreal how clean he's playing with such a clean strat tone. The tension of the solo ,and at the end of the song you think you're at the crescendo ,but mark goes from 10 to 12, still more in the tank . Just unbelievable .

TruthSeeker PS wonderful comment. The afore mentioned soulless puppet's could not play two bars of this song without having to retire exhausted to count there millions. They are not musically acclaimed as is MK
+Peter West thanks bro, glad other people out there can see the reality too!Knopfler is a huge inspiration of mine, if others looked up to a real man and true musician like this they might not be a bunch of brain dead zombies. sometimes its hard to live in a world where the puppets are being spoonfed to people through the hypno box, all I can say is... 56 million views without having to brainwash people with newspapers, tv news, music channels etc... that says more about how great MK actually is compared with these soulless clowns and the other thing is, look how long Knopfler has been doing this, he recently played a show where I live in Scotland, do we think rihanna and gaga and the rest of the soulless crew will still be doing that in 30 years? lol I already know the answer !!!! :)
+TruthSeeker _56 million views? holy fucking shit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that says everything about how great this song is._ By that piss poor logic, Taylor Swift's "Shake it Off" is 20x as great as SoS, and Gangam Style is 43x as good.
I'm almost 40 and grew up with my dad listening to this kind of music, which sparked my love for it. This song and their other songs are just such melodic masterpieces. I wish you many years in good health! Wishes from 🇸🇪🇩🇰🇸🇬
Sometimes a drummer - or any other musician for that matter - could be too intense, and that can ruin the vibe, but here he is totally on fire, yet never goes too far, he's absolutely on top of the game, amazing to see and hear a performance such as this. Even for guys this good this must be a bit special.
That’s right my friend, and that’s the reason they dying young. They live in another dimension. I had a drummer friend who died really young, and one time in a ball room we tried to teach him how to dance, we failed! Their Rythm in their head is different from a normal persons. If you seen the movie, “ Motorcycle diaries “ than you will know what I was talking about. That Mambo Tango, they called was the result by my friend dance. We just couldn’t find a name for his performance, but after so many yrs I came up with a name, “ hawk rock “ ever seen a hawk walking? Imagine it in a speeded version.
2:33 when Mark knopfler turns around and looks at Williams absolutely shredding the kit, with a smile on his face knowing that something legendary is going on, is the absolute greatest!.. as absolutely untouchable as Mark knopfler is as a musician can be.. in that very moment when his head is turning side to side, I can only imagine what he must have been feeling. it's as though he was just taking in all of the greatness going on around him literally had to smile so hard. You can just tell how when he comes back to the mic, he is just on a completely different level.
Okay, so the man is doing one of the best solos/performances ever without looking at the guitar, but also smiling, jumping, moving around the stage... I can't understand it I'm sorry it's beyond perfection and humanity.
Seriously. This video makes me want to smash my face off my strat. I honestly cant even play while standing up; to get anything recognizable out of my fingers I need to be sitting down. Dam.
Mark once said in his interview that one has to have a little obsession to play a bit better. And I think he has that obsession which is not the case with many of us.
Incredible the dynamics that the drummer give to the music. It's not so common to see a drummer playing like that. When it was necessary he played so soft, given "space" for the guitars and piano shine.
Everyone talks about how amazing Queen and Led Zeppelin are live, but this does it for me. I have never felt so much energy, passion, emotion put into a single live performance. Dire Straits' live performances are in every way on par with Queen and Led Zeppelin. I will never, EVER get tired of hearing these 10 minutes and 47 seconds
The first time I experienced this version my reacton was identical to yours. Perhaps 'orgasmic' is too stong an adjective, but it 'comes' damned close.

Can we all agree that, as impressive as Knopfler's clean, highly melodic and fluid lead playing is, the drummer can more than hold his own? I'm both highly impressed and highly jealous at how he can both improvise those on-the-fly fills and then play them so precisely. It really is a thing of beauty, and a wonder to behold.
Agreed! Even Knopfler is impressed. Check out 2:30-2:40 where the drummer (Terry Williams) does a great drum fill and Knopfler turns around to look and smiles.
It's really impressive how he precisely stays in melody during or after impro. Drummer raised hell and opened heaven. All in all : This must be one of the best live performances by any (popular - known) band ever.
Mark Knopfler is one of those guitarists that are rare and unique, with a sound and style that no one esle has and that is what makes him so special. He is not the fastest nor the louder, but no one can play the way he plays and if you sum a very special voice and the ability to compose extraordinary music and quite poetic lyrics, we are talking about of one of the best musicians ever.

La mejor presentación de una banda en la historia
Mark is out of this world, but the drummer drives this, unbelievable rhythm and timing.
I have listened to this so many times and watched it plenty. I finally realized how much it was a pinnacle for a whole band. You notice the soloing and the drumming but the reality is that all parts work together to make an incredible piece of music and show. Thankfully, it was recorded for us to enjoy today.
Well said I agree
well guy s it's,a,history piece,,with our rose,,,di,,,,we,r proud,,
Yes, you are right!!! This is truly performance at the pinnacle !!!
After hearing this version for the first time yesterday, I'm finding myself drawn back over and over !
Beautifully summed up Mr Redmond Wallace. xx
That is my favorite part too! I am a huge Mark Knopfler fan and he is amazing in this song but Terry Williams on the drums is spectacular!
Terry stole the show with that fill. One of the less talked about drummers of rock and roll, but he sure was a huge part of dire straits.
Don't forget the moment they make eye-contact and do the hook at 5:45, my favourite part of this performance.
but they surely would be practicing the song like this, no?
Reaching, a lot of the latter stages of this strike me as a bunch of world class musicians completely in sync with each other in a sort of flow state, essentially jamming, it may have been roughly rehearsed but it really does feel like (and I hope it was because I'll respect and love it even more) it's completely impromptu.
This is definitely on the top 10 best rock performances of all time.
You can say that again, this is my main RUclips song by Mark Knoffler.
This and Pink Floyd's Comdortably Numb on The Delicate Sound of Thunder Album
@@RayRay-cu9rt Have you checked out Knopfler's live versions of Speedway at Nazareth? Epic...
The instrumentals are insane but dare I say... he's not making much effort to sing the notes
RUclips Account true, he was off key a few spots.
Even now, over forty years after this evening in July 1983, this is still one of the best recorded live rock performances of all time ...

David Sears Very well said
Best live performance ever. 👏
Absolutely insane performance by the drummer. Best drumming I've ever heard in a live song

Agreed!! I am IMPRESSED!!
The drummer has actually responded 2 some of these comments.
Bonham: Hold my beer....no wait never mind I actually like this one
And the sound and production engineers did a fantastic job. Every note is perfect. The drums don't have that thin or muffled sound that they did in the 70's, or the overblown reverb sound they did in the 80's through 90's. Amazing by the performers and producers!

Drummer raised hell and opened heaven.
All in all : This must be one of the best live performances by any (popular - known) band ever.
absolutely phenomenal! 146 million views. This just turned my shit day into a good one. Came for the guitar, stayed for the drums!
I said the same thing....DANG....drummer!
Knoplfler and the Drummer deserve equal credit for this performance !
U right it's very poetic methodical.Mark knopfler is not about razzle dazzle.
Aye,Definitely!! 100%...
Sir Knopf`s playing is Totally Unique,IF you`ve ever tried to play the Guitar,It`s kinda Tricky,But to even Imitate MK`s playing???
Good Luck wi That!! XD The Best description/Title iv`e seen is the Fitting word "Virtuoso!"...
They Sure Don`t make `em like That Anymore,Eh??!!!
well said!
Not the fastest? Hmmm
Only one guitarist tops Knophler and that's Gilmour
