I have loved Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler (I am also a fan of Mark's solo work), since the beginning: That said, I appreciate the guys even more, and am even more enthralled than ever, as a matured (and trained) musician, writer and poet. Furthermore, now that I am in the final stages of a terminal illness, I find that rewatching these videos of their performances is one of the very few things that makes me feel truly happy and alive in the moment (in addition to the nostalgia and artistic appreciation, I suspect it also has something to do with the dopamine, adrenaline, serotonin and / or endorphins that are released as a result). Dire Straits were probably one of the best bands at changing volume and tempo repeatedly throughout a song and bringing out every subtle nuance in their performance. This is what live performances should be like. Even if you're not a musician, there's something that everyone can take out of seeing and hearing something unique. It also allows the players to avoid being overcome with boredom -- playing the song the same every night. It does, however, require that the band have that deep connection and know how to play together, and play off of each other. This is a clinic in how to do that. Utter brilliance!
Loved Dire Straits but just in the last few months I have realised how insanely good this Alchemy version of Sultains of Swing is. The best live version of a tune ever with all band members giving their all except the drummer who was nuts!!

Seriously this. I mean, Mark is awesome no doubt, but every single one of the band is giving it their all. The drummer is on fire, they're having fun on stage..everything just works. 💯👌🏻Seriously wish I was there.
Well put..I think a Rock Symphony like this classic if we can call it that is much harder to pull off given the blistering pace and the all too high probability of messing it up so easily and just once..may be a better trained ear can spot some minor inaccuracies in the workmanship here but to the average fan, this is just flawless. And doing it live on stage with no chance for a do over or re recording is just icing on the cake...how supremely talented they are individually and collectively !!

😊
And they were playingTOGETHER not trying to prove something against each other. The way they looked at each other and smiled.
There is no better version on net.
5:02 is the funkiest lick ever, and Mark knows it.
I love the fact that you can see tons of different languages in the comments section. Makes me think how music is universal and touches different people from different cultures. Awesome! Great song and great performance!
Agree. Great comment. And not a beg.

I have watched and listened to this piece hundreds of times (maybe a thousand) and still get goosebumps. To me it’s simply the best live performance from all involved I have ever witnessed. Everything in complete sync, and Williams on drums the icing on the cake! You knew you were going to get a great mark knopfler but it’s everybody.
To this day I’m so blown away by this production, and I’m 69 years old.
Absolute PERFECTION.
I agree, this song is the best thing that ever happened to me. I actually like more the live performance one than the original.
The icing on the cake to some.. bit in reality he is more akin to the forces of gravity that drive the crashing of waves onto the shore 🍺🥁
Same here😁😍
Same here. same age. And I agree. I listen to this version all the time. Peace out Dude
Same here,55,greetings from Greece
Guitar George is killing it, just killing it. You go, Guitar George. ❤
Whenever I listen to this song I can not really tell who plays better, all did an amazing job. Terry Williams, the drummer, plays at heaven level, not to talk about Mark.
마크노플러?
Thank you veryveryvery
the drummer rocks
Terry is a beast on drums holy shit.
Mark is titan with that Strat.
You don't forget that keyboard guy = sensational.
Glenn Hayes Terry Williams was and is the best drummer they ever had.
Glenn Hayes This is not a strat, it is a schecter
Home base banbury

Mark knofler one of the most talented lead guitar/ singers in the 80's. dire straits rocks

This is pure genius. The entire band is totally amazing. Saw them live. Wow! Just wow!
Wanted to leave a comment but I’m still speechless. What a banger of a performance. They’re absolutely ripping through the solos at an insane pace, what an absolute joy to listen to world class musicians performing at their best. That was Fing good
After 36 years NEVER EVER forgotten just how good this is! Tight. Magnificent! Um, WOW!!!!!
There are nights in the life of every band when everything just works...all the musicians are on top of their game & everything comes together perfectly...this is one of those nights!
Yes 🥰💕
Hear, hear stewartmac1. I'm an old London rock chick, veteran of so many live gigs. This one was special back in the day and 40+ years on is still bloody special. Mind you, I never went to a gig at Hammersmith Odeon that wasn't special. xxx

The guy at the drums is royally bossing this.
Terry Williams had a monster night in Hammersmith Odeon. This must be a performance of his life. Absolutely insane. Incredible..
Same goes for Hal, John, Alan and Mark himself. He was never able to duplicate this performance.
Dire Straits is one of those rare groups where I like their live versions even better than the excellent recorded versions. Here, for instance, the drummer really let's her rip, and Mark Knopfler shines on the guitar.
all the greats are better live

No other song in my 73 years of life has rocked my soul as much as this masterpiece, Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits. T
Great number, indeed. I was considering Job from the Bible... He was in "Dire Straits" ... I had to hear Sultans of Swing one more time!
Maybe Just maybe R.E.M. Loosing my religion...😄😁😆
i could not agree with you more. simply amazing. i have heard it a 1000 times . never tired of it.
A song that will be eternal.

Knopfler is a god, and the band is so impressive, this performance needs to be played for everyone.
Watching and listening to this amazing performance reminds me that there is hope yet in this world
I very much agree!
For me this is the best version! Never gets stale. Now approaching 70yrs, difficult to find other live songs with such near perfection😎😎
