    If you like this video you can buy me a coffee. I really appreciate the support!
    As one of only a handful of advocates of the Fender Jaguar Mute left in the world, I get asked a fair bit how to install them and set them up. This video, in the Jaguar modifying series, does just that!
    Installation is actually super easy, but I understand drilling holes into your precious guitar doesn't come easy to everyone. I do hope this helps ease the stress of the modification as I guide you every step of the way.
    See you next time as we setup the Jaguar and the terrible Bridge!(its not terrible just misunderstood!)

      @@DestroyingAmpsGearDemos you know I never saw this reply! No I didn't go through, I just went a bit too deep meaning that the spring doesn't compress so theres no upward pressure to hold the mute in either position. It's just kinda floppy. Little tip : The wood of current squier- and some fender bodies is soft, so it is wise to drop a small metal plate in the hole to prevent the stiff spring from “ digging” through the guitar body slowly and escaping through the back at a certain point in time …

    Thanks, this video walked me through my installation quite nicely. I did read all the comments first, to see if there were any common mistakes I might be able to avoid. A bit of tape on the drill bits is an excellent tip, long used by carpenters, but not known by all.
    For anyone with a non-metric set of bits, a half inch bit is a perfect fit. It's just a couple of hundredths of an inch larger in diameter than the metal riser. So much else is interchangeable with US Fender Jags, I wonder if they actually used non-metric parts in Indonesia.

    I have a owned a 66 Jaguar for the last 42 years and I got to say that the mute was the first thing to go. I still have it and thinking about installing it the next string change then I watched this video, it’s staying in the box. Great information in this video.

      Yes your video is very informative. I learned things I didn’t know. One odd thing is my 66 doesn’t have the 2 screws in the mute rocker plate only to one center. It’s possible that would make it more user friendly. But that’s why I’m not going to install it. Thanks

    I’ve been fighting this stupid mute thing for a long time. Basically, I have a secondhand AVRI that I bought that came with no mute when I bought it. It took me ages trying to just figure out how to install it, but I finally did, and it’s just like you show here-though I didn’t have to drill any holes. The only problem is, no matter how I adjust it, the foam knocks the strings out of tune. I found these articles online by these guys Mike and Mike’s Guitar Bar explaining everything in detail, and the only thing I can figure is that I need softer foam. However, all the parts I bought (including the foam) were in official Fender bags. Mike suggested shaving the foam and I did because he said it’s supposed to be only 3/8 of an inch thick, and mine was substantially thicker than that. But, even after shaving the dumb thing, it’s still too stiff (Yeah. I know how all this sounds. Sorry). Any tips? Maybe where to find better mute foam? Did you ever actually get this to work without knocking the guitar out of tune? I’d sure appreciate help, man.

    • @DestroyingAmpsGearDemos
      @DestroyingAmpsGearDemos  3 года назад +2

      Is the neck shimmed? If you can't screw the mute further down, try raising the bridge a little. That will take some of the pressure off the strings. You need to shim the neck a bit more then. It's trial and error with these things. You could also leave the mure ingaged for a few days. This would compress the foam a bit more. Hope that helps.

    • @DerMensch1
      @DerMensch1 3 года назад +1

      @@DestroyingAmpsGearDemos yeah, thanks. I’ve shimmed the neck, yes. I’ll try leaving the mute engaged. Hadn’t thought of that. Thanks for the reply. Did you use one of those mute strips that comes in a fender bag? And you got it to work?

    • @DestroyingAmpsGearDemos
      @DestroyingAmpsGearDemos  3 года назад +1

      @@DerMensch1 definitely try raising the bridge just to see if you can get the mute more to your liking just as an experiment. The mute will always change tuning/intonation a bit but should not be awful. I believe the mute kit in this video has the fender issue foam yeah. Best of luck.

  • @nothingandmore

    Mine was so stiff i had to drill the hole almost to the very bottom of the body. I had to sand and polish the tip of the screw on the mute assembly itself.

  • @pommes_fritz
    @pommes_fritz 6 месяцев назад

    Why didn't I find this video a year ago? I found a similar drawing at google pics and this made me finally understand what have do be done. It works quite well now, but i had to put a shim under the neck for a better angle so that the strings come closer to the fretboard. But the bridge could be lower for my taste. And the strings hit the screws at the bridge so i changed the hight of the Bridge with a metal saw now its better but not perfect. Can you show or tell how it is at yours?

    • @DestroyingAmpsGearDemos
      @DestroyingAmpsGearDemos  Год назад +3

      Yes and no. You do need to raise the bridge to have the mute function. But the jaguar is supposed to have a shim in the neck pocket anyway. With a shim everything will be playable with low action.

    • @DestroyingAmpsGearDemos
      @DestroyingAmpsGearDemos  3 года назад +1

      Hmmm..I think the mechanics of it would work. No reason it wouldn't. Not sure if the downward angle the strings take after the bridge would cause some issues being lifted up? Is the resonance that bad on your Jaguar?

      @@DestroyingAmpsGearDemos Someone asked this in one of the guitar groups and I came to the same conclusion. Once you've used one and/or installed one you could see how or most likely wouldn't work behind the bridge because of the lift it would likely take the strings out or lift them.

      Same thing I did, drilled the hole a little deeper. Then cut the screw. I've still gotta cut the screw, again, on mine though. The CV doesn't have the center hole in the pickguard. It has the mounting screw holes though.

      I'm doing the same to a Squier now. Which I paid more for than the Fender Player Marauder made in China. Both have fine fit and finish. I'd say build quality wise, both are on par with the '06 MIM Strat. Old post I realize, but maybe someone else will see this and actually consider a Squier if they don't have $$ for a US or Japanese FENDER Jaguar, like me! I looked. I compared, & I could justify the Squier, and saving $2500US+. THAT left me with enough to buy the mute which wasn't on the AO, & some fancy custom pickups, and food, utilities and rent for 2 months😂
      Heck, throw in some vintage pickups and I'd bet you couldn't audibly distinguish a well cared for (poplar body) '21 Squier, from a '66 AO. That's my $0.02
