Fender/Squier Jaguar 3-Way Toggle Switch and Series/Parallel Mod

- Today I will simply be showing you how to wire your Fender or Squier Jaguar with my latest favourite mod used for my Classic Vibe Jaguar.
My purpose in creating this mod was to improve the switching ergonomics of the traditional jaguar to my preferences, and add a series/parallel function while keeping all of the standard pickup/circuit combinations of normal jag wiring. Essentially I want to have my cake and eat it too!
This mod adds a 3-Way On-On-On Toggle switch to switch between pickup combinations in the lead circuit rather than the stock slider switch per pickup system. This is a standard mod I do to all my jags because I prefer the switching ergonomics of a 3 way switch. To do this mod, you’ll need a mini dpdt on-on-on switch. I use one with a fat bat style toggle that feels more solid than the usual mini switch toggles.
Link to type of switch I use:
rover.ebay.com...
The second part of this mod is repurposing the switch used to control the bridge pickup to be a series/parallel switch. Since the switch is a DPDT switch we can easily do this.
I drew a rough wiring diagram, which is on the video but you can also download from this link:
drive.google.c...
Since this video gets a bit long I’ll follow this video ups with another showing off the kinds of tones the guitar can now get with these mods!As always thanks for watching!

Couple points:
1: Love the treble bleed!
2: All this copper shielding can be done very efficiently with the MVP of grounding, aliuminum foil, if one is on a budget. See here for details: ruclips.net/video/5uUwDbIE9Yc/видео.html
3: For those less inclined to spend hours carefully filing a control plate, simply install a dpdt push-pull pot and keep your classic Jag controls standard. Or just, y'know, buy one of many Fender/Squier models that phoned it in with a 3-way switch.
4: That said, highly recommend any series mode on a 2-pickup single-coil guitar, it will really expand your tonal options, though I personally would add a phase switch (via second push-pull pot in this particular instance).
5: You can get all of these options usable on the rhythm circuit, with its distinct volume and tone controls, though it takes a bit of (okay a *lot* of) creative wiring. Here's what I did with my Vintage Modified: ruclips.net/video/EPQcgRI1ChI/видео.html
Honestly, for the right price (time is money friend!) I could likely make your switching work with both circuits the way you envision, you're really not taking advantage of the double poles on that new pickup selector. Email me at jmutations@yahoo.com if you want to hear more.
Ha! This is EXACTLY what I was looking to do, with this exact guitar! Right down to the three-way toggle. Amazing.
Thanks so much :)
soundslikebroken no problem! Happy modding!
Nice lol
Nice name too
This is like asmr but for jag lovers 😩😩
Sometimes after shielding your guitar, some parts might make contact with the shielding and cause a short. If your guitar isn’t working after you put it back together, this is probably what’s happening. It’s easy to fix. I’ve done things like put tape on top of the shielding, or painted a layer of superglue on it. You can paint over the shielding with poster paint, and I’ve even used cardboard. Anything to block the parts from touching the shielding and creating a short circuit.
I did some minor tweaks to mine (tape the posts, moisturized the fretboard board, put a Japanese trem on) and this mod seems very up my alley, appreciate this video!!
which Jap-Trem model did you put on ?
this is immensely helpful
I've been looking for this circuit for years. Nice one man. My switch just arrived. Going to give it a go tomorrow
Have fun mate. Hope you get a lot out of the mod!
@@alexrcowan I'll you know how I get on. Ta
Did the mod and it works a treat. I had the series parallel mod but using the pickup selectors, so both in up position was series both down was parallel. I always found using switches to choose the pickups a bit naff. The three way switch is far more familiar.
Your mod videos are great! Glad to see you do one with this guitar!
Thanks Greg, couldn't resist doing some kind of mod to this guitar. I can't seem to bring myself to leave my guitars stock these days :P
This is another really good video, I will have no problem following this.
Thanks for the Mini switch idea!
Alex! You are back!
Haha, sure am Diego!
Hey man great video! 😊
I have just bought the same guitar and have also purchased a kurt cobain toggle switch plate,
I want install a short body switchcraft 3 way toggle and keep the strangle switch usable, do you have any wiring diagrams that could help me?
I can't find anything online 😔
Thanks bro!
Nice work dude.
Hey man! you did a great job on this superb Jag 🎖 i have one too in my collection n i've been swapping already the bridge for a Staytrem + adding a Wizzobuzz which helps to get rid of the kinda sitarish strings' vibes but im considering now to shim the neck with a StewMac 0.5 shim block ....i'm just asking you if you recommend this mod in order to gives a better action with the bridge height setup higher since it may require a certain amount of angle from the vintage design of an archtop ....what do you think ?
I want to see someone turn the lead circuit of a Jazzmaster into a series mode, maybe call it the 'meat circuit' lol. I feel like those JM single coils would sound like a monster as one huge humbucker.
I've had a series/parallel switch on my Jazzmaster in the past, meaty is a good way to describe the sound. It's not exactly like a humbucker, but the extra output is always nice haha!
Great Mods. cool guitars. I have what's probably an annoying question for you guys. I've been trying these mods and everything works except for the neck pickup isn't working when the series\parallel switch is up. it works in every other position it should. I've redone the wiring a couple times without success. I notice that in the diagram theres a wire from the input jack to the tone pot but you didn't do that in the video but that didn't seem to help either. sorry I'm just copying and don't really know why the wires go where they go so I can only do so much trouble shooting. Anyhing come to your mind as the most likely culprit? thanks. appreciate your time and vids
8:07 is the series/parallel
Thanks, super helpful. Which 3-way toggle switch are you using?
Thanks for the (not exaggeratedly) detailed video.
What width copper tape would you recommend?
No problem, sorry for the late reply. I prefer 50mm width
If I'm using an aftermarket (Seymour duncan quarter pound jaguar pickup) Does the claw still need to be regrounded? (Pickup stats the claw isn't necessary for this pickup)
I want to do series/parallel on a telecaster. The previous owner drilled a hole and added a toggle so I’d rather use that hole for a switch I want instead of his setup (treble bleed on a switch ???). Am I correct in thinking I want an ON-OFF-ON DPDT to use with the tele 3 way? I found ONE diagram for the setup I want as it seems everyone else gets the 4 way tele blade. I assume I will be using the same principles as your new 3 way toggle plus series/parallel switch and treating the tele blade switch like your new pickup selector and matching your series/parallel wiring. If you or anyone else can see problems I am overlooking please hit me on the head and tell me where I’m wrong. Great jag!!!
*writing this before watching the video* will you add the treble bleed mod in the future, and if so, will you do a video of it then?
I actually do add a treble bleed toward the end of the vid haha
I'm building a squire jaguar and can't find anything about what holds the pickups in place. In your video it looks like a spring ? assembly on bottom of the pickup? What holds everything in place to allow for adjustment? Thank You for any help
hi, what kind of wires sould i buy to use in the switches?
Talent and passion ... 🤟💀🥀
Gimme that fretboard!
Make me!
hello, I have the same guitar. i have problems in the neck pick up, the sound/signal keeps cutting off. this happens when i adjusted the pick up height. i dont know what's causing the signal loss. i hope you can help me. thank you
How would you replicate this with a HH configuration?
What is the stuff you’re soldering in between the middle at 13:51 that isn’t wire? Sorry I’m new to this.
@alexrcowan help please.
That is indeed wire, just no insulation on it. Bare wire is used for short connections sometimes so you don't melt the insulation
I have a Gibson 3 pickup SG custom. When the selector switch is in the middle position the sound is the usual out of phase Fender Strat type tone. What mod needs to be done to make the middle position in phase,so that the bridge and middle pickup work together?Unable to find info.
if i wanted to add a humbucker in the bridge position what would be i have to do?
alex, is this wiring the same with KC's guitar setting? Greetings from Indonesia
So I see you cut the ground on saw tooth cover around the bridge pick up and stated it will not work properly with it grounded. So do I need to do the same on the neck pick up??
No you only need to do this to the one pickup for this mod
This had me kinda confused as well. What’d you figure out gravey?
@@blu3me304 just did the one and it works perfectly.
@@GraveyJones86 thank you brother. I’m working on this today!
@@alexrcowani've seen another video for a telecaster where they snipped on the neck pickup for a series mod. why is it bridge on a jaguar?
what if i just want the 3 way and series switch? i have a les paul style toggle and want use it as a pup selector and a dpdt switch on hand with either a v/t/t or v/v/t control setup. any help would be appreciated
Nice. So you used one pup switch for series/parallel. The other switch?
Phase/out of phase?
The other switch is the standard bass cut/strangle switch. I wanted to keep all the standard switching options I could get on a stock Jag as well as having the series/parallel
Pardon for asking.. why did the interior of your guitar is covered with copper?
A Wanderer Shielding against interference to minimize signal noise/hum
What ToasterMedia said. It lined with copper to form a faraday cage around the electronics to minimize hum by shielding against interference from things like lights or other electronics
@@alexrcowan thanks for the reply! Do Bass also need this? Or it's only guitar thing?
@@razmazerz You can certainly do this to help shield your bass against noisy interference if it needs it
Do you have a detailed diagram of how the rhythm circuit came stock? The black wire came loose on my CV Jaguar’s rhythm circuit and I’m trying to figure out where to put it back. Currently got no output from the rhythm circuit and neck pickup. Greatly appreciate it.
Hi, sorry for the late reply. The diagram will be the same as a fender jaguar wiring diagram, the only differences could possibly be wire colours.Just google Fender Jaguar Wiring Diagram and heaps of options will come up. Hope that helps!
How difficult would it be to use the on-on-on 3 way to replace the Rhythm circuit toggle so that it will act as a Neck, Middle, Bridge switch? I was going to swap the tone pot on the rhythm circuit to a 1 meg and put a treble bleed on the volume pot so it would function more like a Les Paul.
Do you mean to swap the position of the 3 way toggle to where the rhythm switch is? And then have two volumes and 2 tones like a Les Paul? Not too difficult at all man
can a common lp selector switch fit the cavity?
Cool stuff! I'll probably follow this when a couple more parts arrive for my Jag (bought the exact same guitar in a different colour, then resprayed it seafoam green, then decided black looks best and I should have bought that colour to begin with 🤦♂️ just going to get a new black body and some other little upgrades while I'm at it) - I'm not sure if I missed it or misunderstood anything, but does the 'strangle'/bass cut switch still work here?
do cover on about a girl on this jaguar with hum baker on 16:18
Is it possible to buy genuine Jaguar plates?
Hello Alex ,
Did you study this at school? I mean you learned all these electronic stuff at school? or it is your hobby?
Hi, nope, I entirely taught myself most of these things with help from other professionals in the industry. I'm actually a guitar tech in real life!
Hey Alex, I followed your diagram exactly and have one small issue.
I opted to use a ON/ON toggle switch instead of the slider switch for the rhythm circuit. Even though I wired it exactly the same, for some reason the toggle is reversed. The rhythm circuit is activated when I switch the toggle down, rather then up. Any ideas?
My bridge pickup no longer gives an Ohm reading, and is giving very low output after clipping the ground
Rotate the switch 180.
Noob question: is there any other combination of capacitors for the treble bleed Mod?
Yes there are many different values you can use for the caps and resistors in a treble bleed, comes down to what you think sounds best
Hi Alex, I just bought a used Vintage Modified jag and the tortoiseshell pickguard has some nasty discoloration (it's somehow turned highlighter yellow - not mild yellowing, a part has literally turned bright yellow.) Any clue where I can pick up a decent replacement pickguard?
Hi, I recommend checking out Neagle Luthier on Reverb.com. He's made a couple of VM jag pickguards for me and they've been amazing!
Thanks :)
Anyone know If this mods can work in a JM?
If you put extra switches in the JM there’s no reason it wouldn’t work
does that work with an HH jaguar ? like the player series one ?
You can definitely make the player series do series/parallel by either changing the switch, repurposing the coil split switch or even changing the volume or tone for a push/pull pot
does the strangle switch work with the series parallel?
Yep!
