Fender Jaguar - Beginners guide to Bridge Setup
If you have just bought a Fender or squier Jaguar and are having problems with the Bridge or setup generally. Are your strings skipping? guitar going out of tune? bridge rattling? fret buzz? high action? If you are asking have I just bought a dud and is the fender Jaguar even a good guitar? then I hope that this video can help.
Setting up a fender JAGUAR or Jazzmaster has a learning curve but it can be done! even with a cheap squier Jaguar. I hope this video gets your jaguar or jazzmaster playing really well. There is no reason that the Jaguar bridge should fail on you. With the right setup your Jaguar will play well and stay in tune.
If you like this video share it comment and give it a like. If you want to see more content from me get subbed silly!

Good information in this vid. First time I got a Jag it played shite and I had to do a ton of research to get it to play well and it took a month or so to get it where I wanted it but in the process, I learnt a hell of a lot about setting up guitars.
If I could add a few suggestions, if you don't have any blue loctite, clear nail varnish works just as well. Add a drop and work it into the bridge grub screws and let it set and then your bridge won't sink.
Getting the right gauge strings is important. Ernie Ball do an 11 - 52 set called Ernie Ball Light Gauge. Great to begin with and the G is wound. You may find some problems with a dead G string on higher frets but this set of strings sort it out no problem
Last but most important, shims. You can buy some 3mm thick pieces of veneer/plywood in packs of 4. You can get 8 shims out of them by cutting them yourself and sanding them down to be paper thin at one end and a little thicker at the other. Do it yourself! It's a pain in the arse, time consuming at first but you'll have an exact and comfy fit and I think it sounds better too. Crimson Guitars has a good vid on making homemade shims. It's not difficult and totally worth it.

Great advice! I have made shims the way you suggest (the one in the black jaguar is one like that) I literally cut the bit where I mentioned nail varnish because I didn't want to have so much rambling. But maybe should of left it in! Cheers mate

Managed fix the buz. Changed the 9 gauge strings to 11 for more tension, added graphite to the nut, upped the bridge height, slightly tightened the trem and finally readjusted the saddles. Thanks for the advice.

Excellent talk on the subject of setting up the bridge on a Jaguar ish offset.. I have a Jaguarillo I've had now since 2012 and my bridge is set up just as you described it, shim and all. It is a beautiful thing once you understand how it is meant to be. I did go to a Staytrem bridge years ago as I feel it is a very superior bridge compared to the original. My Jag has a 9.5 radius neck and the bridge is made with the same 9.5 radius. About the only place I differ from your advice is string gauge.. I use to put heavier strings on it, 11's 12's but I find I really like 9.5's over anything else.
It funny but no one told me to set it up like this, (high bridge, shimmed neck ect) it just seemed the right way to get it done.. It plays great, It did take me some research to figure out how to correctly set up the trem lock out button and I don't know where that info went to..
I have a pair of Duncan 59's in it.. Love it.
Great video on your part.. Many thanks..

I had a buzz that took me ages to track down. Checked all the usual suspects and it was really eluding me.
Finally I found it. The low e string was actually making contact with the end of the intonation screw (with the intonation screw being slanted up a little). I bought an identical screw, but slightly shorter (from the hardware store) and replaced it. Perfect!

I got a Squier CV Jaguar, and I just 3D printed a full-pocket shim. Wasn't happy with the angle - too much - so I scaled it down a bit and reprinted. Much better, now! Cost me 6 cents a shim in material, and about 5 minutes of time to design.
I still get a bit of buzzing up high on the low E and A strings, but for now I'm good. I like my action super low (I even use 7s on my Jagmaster at the moment... Was an experiment, easy to play, but I will go back up to 9s at least next restring).

A jag with the rocking vintage bridge needs high friction in one place, and low friction everywhere else. There must be high string-saddle friction in order for the strings to grip and move the bridge as they change length with trem use. That high friction is provided by string tension (gauge) and good string break angle (bridge height). But there is low friction between the bottom of the conical-tip height grub screws and the thimble bottom, and of course at the nut, string tree, etc. That's how Leo designed it. An important implication of that is that you should never lubricate the string-saddle points. And never wrap the bridge posts.

Now it’s off to Tescos for some Loctite and lip balm (not sure if the Mrs would be impressed with borrowing hers) and since I play 10s on my Teles, I’d already decided that 11s were the way to go!

@@DestroyingAmpsGearDemos Got the Jag last week… a fabulous guitar, and it surprised me how much it suits my sound and the way I play, but straight out of the box, I got string skipping. Used a ‘cellulose fibre’ shim (a bit of a Weetabix box) on the neck and stuck on 11s and this immediately made a huge difference and I’ve had no problems since then. The thing that really surprised me most about the jag is that, having played fixed bridge guitars (mainly Teles) for 20 years, how much I absolutely love the floating bridge… and how stable it is! My first guitar was a Squier Strat in the 90s which was so unstable it put me off term bridges pretty much until now!

Really appreciate this video! I’ve had my Fender MIJ ‘96 for a number of years. When I first got it, I didn’t realize the intricacies & pretty quickly switched to a Staytrem, but have always had the feeling it should be easier to play after that, shims, etc.
I recently went back to the OG bridge with the feeling I could get the action lower. Watched your video, cut a piece off a cereal box (several adjustments later) & wow it’s like a new guitar!
One thing I’ve had to do is add weather stripping tape beneath to raise the pickups. I did just notice that the bridge pickup must be unpotted, as I can tap & it’s quite loud. Guess I should replace it?
    Thank you again!

    • @DestroyingAmpsGearDemos
      @DestroyingAmpsGearDemos  6 месяцев назад +1

Maybe not, the microphonics may be coming from the claw. If you can pull it off and bend the sides in a hair. Then either. Melt wax on the underside of the pickup bobbin and push the claw into the wax and remelt it to bond the claw and bobbin together. Or replace the wax with super glue. Try that first before replacement. Cheers
