- A fascinating video in which I talk about my Jazzmaster and endeavour to install a replacement Staytrem bridge. All this stuff should apply equally to Jaguar players since that guitar shares the same bridge and trem design.

There is a very simple solution that will benefit all Fenders: Cut a business card in half (you might only need 1/3), from top to bottom. Place 1/2 (or the third) in the neck pocket of the body, as close to the body as you can get it. Replace the neck. Restring. Adjust the bridge up to suit your playing taste, and now you have downward pressure on the bridge. My older brother was doing that in the early '60s to his Jazzmaster.
That's called shimming, my friend. And it's usually recommended for offset guitars, like this beautiful Jazzmaster :)

Thank you ever so much,God bless you and your family.I am just starting out and I happen to come across your youtube page and I'm extremely glad that I did.What brought me to your youtube page is that I was looking to see the different remedies and solutions for correcting problems with strings,especially the sixth string,not staying in the saddle groove.I recently bought a Squier Classic Vibe '70s Jaguar and after seeing some other youtube videos I was very put off because the other youtube videos show the guitar having to be drilled and although I'm quite proficient with tools I really do not feel like having to drill out any part of any guitar especially when it happens to be a guitar as gorgeous as the Squier Classic Vibe '70s Jaguar that I recently bought.Your youtube video is a Godsend because you show exactly what needs to be done without risking any damage what so ever to the guitar.I have a cheap stratocaster that was given to me as a present to start me off and I made modifications to the guitar that was gifted to me,I was extremely careful and the guitar turned out sounding very well so I use the cheap stratocaster until I learn how to play and I'll have my Squier Classic Vibe '70s Jaguar sitting in its case safe and sound waiting for me.

I've been using the Mastery bridge for several years now on my '62 reissue, and though a bit expensive, It has performed beautifully. Perfect drop-in fit, easy and precise action/intonation adjustments with no issues.
I’m over here chillin and looking up stuff and then out of no where I hear loud chaotic noises. That shit caught me off guard lol

Once again many thanks for your video. I too live in the UK and opted for the Staytrem bridge and yes it solved all the issues of the problematic stock bridge, in fact NO issues with the Staytrem bridge, also other things to bear in mind the Staytrem bridge comes in 2 set radius so also suitable for Squier [ Far East models] and very easy to set up and adjust, just only requiring 2 allen key adjustments either side, no problems, easy. The only problem I encountered was the guitar neck needed shimming to allow the bridge be seated correctly, but I took it to my guitar tech who did this and a set up and charged me 40 UK pounds sterling for both, not too painful. Any ways now the guitar plays like a dream, NO problems.

I too live in the UK and am drawn to the Staytrem bridge for Squier Vintage Modified Jazzmaster for a number of reasons, number 1 reason being they have the correct set radius for the guitar with no individual saddle height adjustments, this to me seems easier for a guitar set up, which I am confident I can do myself saving me money. The Staytrem bridge come in many variations, different sized radius and even a conversion for the Adjust-O- Matic bridge.Many thanks to you for the video and Staytrem for this relatively uncomplicated solution.

(Have a Johnny Marr Jag so familiar with them) - totally agree that the Mastery doesn't look the part - especially on a vintage 62. Thanks again

Thank you Adrian. After watching this video, I also bought a StayTrem bridge for my Fender Japan Jazzmaster. Hopefully, I will never have that kind of nightmarish gig you had, haha.
I also got the StayTrem's improved tremolo bar and so far, it works really great. My tremolo now acts like a long bigsby - much easier to grab on to and it doesn't dangle off when I let go of the bar.

The staytrem is perfect, quality bit of kit. Currently living in my JM Jaguar.
Surprisingly, the exact same problem exists on the very latest Squier jaguar/ jazzmaster guitars. The bridge sinks after about 3/4 hrs playing, causing choked notes. I put a Staytrem tremolo lock on mine, but as they have a 20 week wait on their bridges I’ve gone for A Halon bridge which is another solid piece of engineering

Recently lost trem for my avri 65 Jag arm at a gig, shocked at the price of a Fender oem replacement arm I decided to bite the bullet and find the extra cash to buy a Staytrem collet and arm.
I didn't have particularly high expectations not because of any doubts about Staytrem products but because I really didn't think there was much wrong with the Fender set up. In practice I have been surprised just how much of an improvement the Staytrem offered not only in terms stopping the arm from swinging loose but also in terms of giving a much better feel to the action of the tremolo as a whole.
Demo at the end sounded really cool!

Last year I took on the task of refurbishing my brother-in-laws very neglected Fender Mustang. It was my first time doing that kind of work on a guitar. Total trial by fire. I knew nothing about rocking offset bridges. I did a good job but to get a good action height you had to keep the bridge rocked back. Of course it would move all the time. You would have to check it’s position while you played. I got sick of it so I raised it a little bit and crammed paper in the bridge holes to stop the rocking. It worked.

The bridge on my Fender Player Jaguar was driving me fucking insane. What a stupid design!
I got a StayTrem bridge and it's now solid as a rock and doesn't rattle like it did. Swapped out the tuners for a set of the vintage-style split-post tuners and I'm now having more fun than I have had with any guitar I've owned in 45 years!

Thanks for the video; very interesting. I've got a Jazzmaster American Professional (2016) and it has a bridge similar to that one you put on your guitar. I didnt use mine Jazzmaster a lot, just at home, i hope I will use in a proper gig very soon, and i hope I will not have problems.
Loctite 222 is their low strength variant thread locker and is good for all twelve saddle screws and bridge posts...and any other problematic screws. A tiny amount goes a long way. Set up precisely first and then back out to apply loctite.
String popping is pretty well solved by using 13-56 strings. These guitars shipped in the 1960s with 13’s. But it does depend on how heavy you play.
Loved ur demo piece... very garage rokish ;) dig ur style man! .... i've got the same guitfiddle (in olympic white) ... did the Masterty with the matching tail piece w/ trem arm etc. ... didn't know about the British purveyor when i did mine last summer in the states... looks like they built there design on an improved design on the "Mustang" "barrell" bridge... anyway... i dig ur page and glean a lot of help from ur tutoriols (espec. I’ve put a Staytrem on my Originals Jag and like you went for the moveable one rather than set. One problem I do have is the high E string unwinding as it rubs against the screw on the trem plate under the E string so before restringing I have to run a line of solder on the string. Since I have put D’Addario 11 NYXLs the guitar just stays in tune forever that extra pressure on the bridge really makes all the difference. I love those strings they last forever.
I recently purchased a Fender Player series Jaguar, & after setting it up, the high E, B, & G strings were buzzing on the intonation screw ends, so I got a Schaller roller bridge, for about $50. After pressing the studs in, the new bridge went right in, & the sitar sound went away. My thinking was with this type of vibrato, the strings are actually moving over the saddles, affecting tuning stability. That's why I went with the roller bridge.
The fact that Fender hasn't re-engineered this is amazing. It's such a widely known issue. Something about staying true to the originals, warts and all. I like the bridge you chose. The Mastery Bridge looks quasi-modern and like some strange american muscle-car. Staytrem looks like it could have been designed in 1960. Nice MS-20 btw.
The bridge is not really flawed because it was designed for the heavy gauge jazz strings which had a lot more tension. Light gauge strings, which became
popular in the early seventies, probably would cause problems.
@@williamgarrett9479 exactly. They were designed for heavy gauge strings and a lot of people were using flatwounds on them. I use 12's on Jazzmasters and never had a problem with the original bridge design, although i do like the Staytrem bridge too.

Hello from 2020. I just got a 2019 Jazzmaster Ultra, and the bridge looks just like the Staytrem. So, I guess as long as you are ready to drop nearly 2k on a new guitar you'll be set and I'm glad to report that this issue has been addressed, at least on this model.
I see now that the Ultra shares the same bridge as the American Professional.

I've had amazingly good success with a Mustang bridge and GraphTech saddles. I not only play professionally with Jazzmasters, but also build JM style and T style guitars. On my own guitars, I leave the Trem off and use a fine tuning stop tailpiece, while shimming the bridge holes so the bridge can't rock (but would leave it to rich if I had retained the trem, as that is the intention of the rocking bridge!)
I can second your endorsement of the StayTrem Bridge. It made a world of difference to my Squier Vintage Modified JM. Not a cheap upgrade at $100, but was worth it to say goodbye to the original CRAP bridge. Also worth it considering StayTrem isn't sold to the US anymore for some reason.
When you tighten the strings over the bridge, do you have to hold the bridge upright, so that the bridge isn't leaning forwards or backwards? Or will that straighten itself out when you use the tremolo?
I just bought a Squire classic vibe 60's Jazzmaster. I put a neck shim in it and completely set the guitar up. It sounds great and plays great with no issues. If string is not tight enough in bridge, put clear tape around 2 neighboring strings between the bridge and tailpiece. Slightly pull the strings together and tape. It puts more tension on string in bridge and rings true. I bought it new for $349.00.
You crack me up every time. The excellent teaching and playing is a bonus.
What gauge strings are you using and what tuning are you in? I had a Staytrem, and while it solved nearly every issue with the stock bridges, I felt it changed the tone too much. It sounded muddy to me. Though it could have been the setup, the low e was completely overwhelmed by all the other strings, especially at the 12th fret and up. It just sounded so muffled and muted. I tried it with three different necks and got the same result with each one. The stock bridge seemed to sound much brighter with much clearer harmonics and overtones.
I did the same replaced with staytrem bridge and went to thicker nickel strings and it feels like a new better guitar. On the original bridge I noticed the grubscrews would slowly loosen and move over time and the string heights would alter and then you had the hassle of trying to get it back the way it was. If you stay with the old bridge I would get a tube of liquid threadlock and put it on all the grub screw threads to minimise movement. I also think the jazzmaster sounds nicer with thicker strings

I have the same issue with my Jaguar. The bridge was an absolute nightmare and even after replacing it with a Mustang bridge (as recommended by the vendor), it's still really buggy, going out of tune and a lot of fret buzz. I have to adjust it every time I play it.
I loved the shoe-gazing, sonic freak out you played at the end - we need more of that!
+Irisplove Yes, Jags are the same design. The Mustang-style bridge sounds like a good bet. But maybe there are other issues too? Probably best to take it to somebody who specialises in these kind of guitars. Once they're set up properly they can be beautiful things. Sometimes a battle to get to that point though.
+anyonecanplayguitar.co.uk Oh, they are beautiful, indeed. I was torn between a Jazzmaster or the Jaguar: early Robert Smith vs Rowland S. Howard. I do regret going for the Jaguar now though, but that's only because of the continual hassles I've been through to get it set up correctly.

Hi Adrian. Have you had any issues with buzzing? I have installed a Staytrem on my Jazzmaster, and there is buzzing from where the bridge post sit in the thimbles.

Fitted Staytrem bridge to AV65 Jaguar. Quick and easy to fit and set up, rock solid tuning and intonation even with regular trem use. Recommended.

I oun a vintage 63. Jaguar and I only wish I could design and make a roller bridge for it.I sure agree with you that the cost of both of those bridge's that you mentioned are way over priced. Another problem that you still mite have with the new bridge is if you bump the bridge accidentally it will mess up. The intonation by staying back or forwards of center even after you work the whammy bar. P.s. I love to see you playing one of these marvelous guitars.
Would i be wrong thinking that if i set the bridge then use a couple of tiny blobs of hot glue on the pins would do the same as the plastic collars?

i have a jazzmaster build...after putting it all togehter....the trem will not work.....took it apart to see if the cavity was rubbing the unit? no....could the aftermarket trem system not have enough spring tension or too much....tried everything
I've not long been getting a pau ferro jaguar and I've been having a hell of a time with my grub screws and saddles staying in place. Never had this much of a time with a guitar before.
Thanks for the video, i'm currently rockin a Fender jazzmaster HH and the bridge has been killing me ever since i bought it. It's a shame because i really love it. I thought that the really expensive mastery bridge was the only way out but the staytrem looks simple and clean. I just ordered one with the 9.5 radius and cant wait to be able to pick up my favourite guitar and just play instead of adjusting the string height and intonation.
And by the way i got a BuzzStop on it right now and it's helping a bit but nothing can really save this awful bridge. So hopefully the new bridge plus the buzzstop will make my guitar solid as a rock. I never use the whammy bar so i want it as solid as possible :)

Whenever I play my Squier classic vibe I have to raise my action I just place my 2mm pick that I play with under the strings and raise up the action until it drops the pick. I do that on both sides every time I pick it up and play so it’s quiet annoying. I didn’t know this is a problem with more expensive JMs.
i GOT THE SQUIRE version of the Jazzmaster mine started that sinking the bridge on the treble side it usually after a few hours of playing then i'd have to get the allen wrench and raise it up again, but before I spend money to replace the bridge i'm gonna try some loctite on the treads so it won't unscrew it's self out of adjustment , thanks for the tip i didn't realize this is a common problem . thought it was just my guitar.
I have often wondered how Adam Franklin kept his Jazzmasters in tune with that bridge setup. He gets really aggressive with his whammy work. Love your Jazzmaster btw.
Is the bridge replacement worth doing anyway? My first Squier Jag 1970s Classic Vibe arrives on Tuesday and i’m moving to France in a few weeks and won’t be able to deal with issues. I could really use the advice. Also, if I do the Staytrem upgrade, what’s the difference between my £310 Jag and any other? I mean in real terms, not available colours and woods but build quality and sound. Thanks :)

Could any one help Iv been playing guitar for a while and I got myself a squier classic vibe jaguar and it’s really not playing well it has really bad fret buzz to the point some frets don’t even play and the strings just feel so flimsy I got it set up and it’s hardly helped any advice
So all that holds the bridge in place is string tension? Novel design. You chose the correct bridge as it is the choice of Brett Kingman, guitar genius and guitar mod upgrader. Nice demo. I have my eye on the Johnny Marr Jag that I believe comes stock with the Staytrem and Bare Knuckle pickups but I haven't played yours or the Jag so I can't pick a favorite yet.
Having recently purchased a Squier Jaguar - with the so-called 'Mustang' bridge improvement - I found I was still struggling with the guitar especially the high E string so took your advice and replaced it with the 'Staytrem' bridge ............. what a revelation it's like a different guitar.

I have a road worn JM ,never had trouble with bridge ,what I like about it is having grooves I can move string position as I like 1st string away from edge of fretboard and each saddle is height adjustable. Maybe I just got a trouble free one,anyway cheers for vid.
I have a Jazzmaster looking exactly like yours but it is a Classic Player series. It sounds great (single coils) and the bridge seems to be the only difference with yours as it resembles that of a Les Paul. So no saddle height screw rattling and strings jumping out of saddles. However I do have a Jaguar with a bridge of vintage type like yours and by using thicker strings 10-46 all problems are improved. Action however cannot be too low to have sufficient angled strings on the stop tail side. I will consider a bridge replacement for the Jaguar. +Fabio Punk Thanks Fabio. Yes, some of the other Jazzmaster and Jag models have designs which are a bit different. I think heavier strings do help. I generally use 10s, and I heard that the original Jazzmasters used to be set up from the factory with 11s.
Had a few problems with unwinding screws way back solved it by brushing a little Clear nail varnish on the thread of the offending screws strong enough to hold and can easily be undone if necessary never failed in my case.
I hope this stuff will work I've had a 63 jag for ever it seems with all the probs.
I just changed the bridge on my Jaguar. I used what's called the Mustang bridge, and it's perfect, and I personally found the I had a little bit more sustain, plus an even cleaner sound. It's not unlike the bridge that this guy is calling the Mastery bridge!
The issue I believe is that those are 7.25 radius, becomes problematic for a 9.5 fretboard.
My solution was getting the Johnny Marr jaguar, and installing a mastery bridge on it. Fixed all the known jag issues.
Henry Gascon I've been debating picking up a Marr Jag! I thought they came with Mastery's like Johnny's. If not that's crazy!! $1700 and then add a Mastery and labor to install!
I just snagged a '19 Ultra. Bridge looks must like the Mastery.

I played one of those. I was really excited. The nitrocellulose on the neck sucks. My hand couldn't slide well, it was hard to play. I was very disappointed.
the saddle screws in mine are unscrewing outwards. what should I use to screw them back?

I just got the strings replaced on my 70s Jaguar and everything still sounds out of tune despite every app/digital tuner telling me that it is. I’m glad I found this. Maybe it’s the bridge. Everything on it is original, so.
My jm jazzmaster came stock with a tune o matic style bridge that is in perfect tune now after I raised the saddles and tightened up strings to medium tension. I was considering a vintage bridge but winded up just using the cover over the tremolo unit so it doesn't get in the way of palm muting and I don't hit the bottom of the strings.
The OCD in me screams "clean underneath the bridge before you replace it!" Ahhhhhh!
Does it fix the popping out of strings while bending in high frets?
Yes, this bridge has been great. Played quite a few gigs with it now and no problems at all so far. Never had a string pop out despite playing really hard and doing a lot of extreme bends.
The RSD-J bridge is amazing if you can find one. They are only on the custom shop Jazzmasters.
An RSD-J is like the Klon for offset players. Almost mythical.
That's insane. I've just picked up someone else's project Jazzmaster (partsmaster?) And it has a lot of strange going on. But it has a Staytrem and it appears to be a fantastic bit of kit and it feels amazing under my palm. Gigged it on Friday and it worked ok.
It's maybe a bit short on break angle over the low E, I get some odd ringing, it's fine in my punk band and I can probably use it for much odd noise, but it's going to take some getting used to.
There are some JM/jag tech gurus who argue that the original bridge and tremolo are the best bridge/tremolo that Fender even invented, across all their guitars. There is lots of information online now on how to set them up (none of which comes from Fender). Some people do things like wrapping the bridge posts so they don't rock, or swap out the bridge too readily, without ever understanding how it is supposed to work. Of course that keeps Staytrem and Mastery in business. The thing that stops the Staytrem bridge sinking is basically a 2mm piece of plastic, probably worth about a cent. A piece of heatshrink has much that same effect.
Yes, some good points there Tim. I know there are some people who manage to make the stock bridge work for them. As I say in the video, I'm no real expert when it comes to this kind of thing and there's certainly a lot of sometimes conflicting information on the web. The Staytrem may not be the cheapest or necessarily the best solution but I'm pretty happy with it for now.
Yeah I'm gonna just make my own plastic bits for my mustang style trem on my jaguar, some old plastic pens will do the trick

Adrian, what are your thoughts on flatwound strings? This would seem to be the perfect instrument to try some out on.
Yes, I love the tone and feel of flatwounds. I've tried them a couple of times, not on this guitar though. Maybe I should give it a go. My only reservations are that for certain styles they don't seem to work so well, and I find bending a lot harder too, even on a light gauge set.
Anyone has a tip for squier VM jaguar set for a almost same action height from 12th fret to 17th fret, something around 2mm
I "built" a bridge for my jazzmaster by replacing the saddles w aftermarket Graph Tech String Saver saddles, they work awesome and it's way cheaper than a mastery, which while being an excellent bridge is way overpriced.
Has anyone ever routed out the tailpiece area, contoured the entire part of the body where the tailpiece is or done a string through body customization to improve the tension between the bridge and tailpiece of a Jazzmaster or Jaguar?

This video is one reason why I'm modding a cheap Squier strat with Jazzmaster pickups and a lipstick in the middle (from Dylan Talks Tone that cost twice what the rest of the guitar cost) - to get a Danelectro and a Jazzmaster without the hassle.

I assume your Jazzmaster wasn't cheap and find it difficult to swallow that on a quality guitar Fender hasn't sorted the bridge themselves, instead leaving the customer to pay for this.

+northof50now It's a quirky design to say the least. When it's set up right the intonation is miraculously pretty good though.
anyonecanplayguitar.co.uk I too haven't had a real problem with it .it may be off a little bit but you can't hear the difference in real playing .mabe with a tuner you could see the difference in it when I it gets bumped. It seems when the trem bar is used it kind of centers itself.
I agree. I think a better design would be a 52mm pole spacing bridge with roller saddles with the option of a 7.25 or 9.5 radius why Fender or Squier have not designed such a bridge is a mystery, and I am no guitar engineer. Presently all you can do is be pragmatic and use plenty of lithium grease on the saddles and nut. Maybe food for thought Staytrem ?
