Just graduated from a hardtail to my first full suspension a few months ago. About to go up to summit this week, I'm coming from a heavy BMX background so your channel has been a huge resource for me. This was tremendously helpful and encouraging. Looking forward to getting familiar to the green and blue trails. Thanks Alan!
Right on! That BMX background will help you a lot once you're ready for Partywave and Westridge. Glad you're encouraged by this vid! Gimme a shout if you see me up there! 👊🏽
Which FS bike did you end up going with?

Great video, Alan! Hope to see you up there sometime soon 🤙🏼
Thanks! Gimme a shout if you see me up there. 👋🏽
I was there last week... I was on the turtle run and like you mentioned, the soft sand on a low Berm gave out and I slammed with no warning...
Thank God I was wearing a full face helmet.
It saves my ass!
My knees and ribs payed the price...
Lesson learned... protect your self!!!
If you don’t your not protecting your families income.....
So far one week in bed and hard to breath because of my ribs...
I can’t wait to get back at it!!!!!
Dag! Sorry to hear you got broke off. And yes! Good point on taxing the fam. 😆
Heal up, bud! 👊🏽
Great video!!! Super helpful for a first time rider!!!

Great stuff! Going for the second time on Wednesday.
Heck yeah!
Great job!!!👍👍
🙏🏾
Just met you at “Get the burger”. You took some time and spoke with my son and his friend. You are really good dude. I’m old but I am following you now. Have a great life!
No worries. Your son and his buddy were cool. 👊🏾 Thanks for the kind words.
Another great video! You give me hope that I too can get good at jumping!
Thanks! It's definitely an ongoing process.
@@mtb_alan Its been great watching you progress, you bounced back so quick from your crash too!
Alan, thanks for this info. I am going up for my first time this next week. A little nervous but you showed me the beginning ropes.
My pleasure! Hope you have a rad time.
This should be required viewing by anyone who goes to Snow Summit for their 1st time. SUPER useful info.
Thanks! Let Snow Summit know! 😎
Great stuff as always! Super informative. #morekatie 🤜🏽💥
Thanks!
Going for the first time tomorrow thanks for the video very helpful.👍
Sweet! But…you know the park doesn’t open until June right?
@@mtb_alan yup just in big bear for the weekend hitting some trails and wanted to see where it was located. Excited to come back when it’s open.
👍🏾 Fall Line is a blast.
Super helpful! Thank you!
👊🏽
Great video thank you
🤘🏾
This got me so pumped to hit it! I had no idea about Squirrel Catchers, that's handy to know. Love the etiquette advice too. Now you have me wondering how many times I didn't get out of the way for another rider cheering me on! 🤔😬 Great guide Alan, I'll definitely be checking this out again before I head up!
Ha ha! I was actually thinking about you some while making this vid. Get yer booty up der, Adam!
@@mtb_alan Ha! It must have been the etiquette part! Always learning! Might be up there or Skypark on Friday if schedule allows. ✌🏼🤟🏼
Ha! Oh no...didn't mean it that way. I was just wondering when Mock was gonna make it to Summit.
Great tips 59 year old and ready
Great video staying on the green and blue hopefully some small jumps
Thanks!
Thanks! Get it, James!
Another awesome video
Thanks!
Thanks for helping me hit the rainbow rock roll I took your advice and I hit it right away now I’m hitting it every time
Heck yeah! Congrats. Now I gotta follow my own advice and start hitting that again. 😁
MTB ALAN It’s pretty smooth this year
I live in Houston Texas and i been riding MTB for a while but never been to a downhill bike park. im planning to check it out in a couple of week, thanks for the beginners guide video and defenitly know what to expect.
Right on! Hope you have fun. 🤘🏽
Relax and have fun! Yeow! GO GREEN all the way lol. Great video Alan! My first time there was awesome, crashed on my 1st run on going green. It's a learning curve on loosey goosey trails. For beginners to have maximum fun, definitely full face, elbow/knee pads are a must because you will definitely crash from too much excitement. Thanks again for an awesome vid. 😁🤙
Sounds like you had an authentic Snow Summit experience! 😆 Glad you had an awesome time! Yew!
Awesome video Alan! My first legitimate bike, a Jeffsy Pro 29 gets here next week, and your content is keeping this former roadie stoked! Hoping to get enough laps in down here in southern OC to build up the skills to hit Summit before the end of the season.
Heck yeah, Michael! That's a rad bike!
And hey, if you have good confidence on the Santiago Oaks trails like Cactus and Chutes Ridgeline, you're probably ready to hit Summit as long as you pick the right trails for your skillset!
Thanks for the wise words@@mtb_alan! Cant wait to get to ripping!
I wish I saw this before going last weekend. my friends took me to party wave as the first trail and I ate it😂 they told me it was a blue trail the whole time until I figured it out. still such a fun time . great video
Ha! You need better friends! JK. We can forget what it was like the first time on a trail. Hope you're all right. Snow Summit is a blast! Glad you dug the vid.
Alan! Thank you for this! I hit up SkyPark regularly and am hoping to take the next step up to Snow Summit in the next week or so. Always a little intimidated by the lifts, what to do, where to go...this is a great helper! Thanks again!
Right on! It's a different energy from Skypark. But it just as fun!
re: the lifts. The attendants at the lift will load your bike for you.
If you want to load your own bike, I see people pickup their whole bike to set it on the tray, but the pro way to do it is to pull you handlebars up and set your front tire into the track and then grab your seat to push the bike up, letting the front tire roll up while you pick up the rear wheel. 👍🏽
Sweet! Thanks again! I was wondering how that worked.
Been watching you for a while Alan great vid I’m in the same area as you so I alway watch your vids for an idea before I hit new trails
Thx for your work/videos
Thanks for the kind words. Stoked my vids help. Gimme a shout if you ever see me on the trail! 👊🏾
Just went up Saturday for my first time haha. I’m just a little late but I’ll use this for next time 🤙🤙
Right on! Hope you had a rad time!
Love the show. I just started back in April and live close to Greer. Hope to see you out there someday. Thank you for all of the information and all you do.
Thanks Mark! Greer is rad. Have you signed the petition going around to try to save some of those trails from the development that's coming in?
My pleasure, man. Gimme a shout if you see me on the trail! 👋🏽
MTB ALAN I sure did. I signed and donated to help keep getting the word out. I also got lucky and there was a meeting at the top where I got to learn more about the Developement. Sounds like they will develop for sure and keep the trails but now it sounds like the issue will be to keep the trails open to everyone and not just for that Developement. Sounds like the Riverside MTB association also got the Mayor of Murrieta out there to see how much it is used by the community and sounds like he was impressed. Hoping all of this helps.
That is so good to hear! Do you suggest a good source of truth on where things are at with that project?
Thank you! Great information! 👍✌️
My pleasure!
Another great vid Alan! As someone who has yet to go up to Summit for MTB, this is valuable info! Wasn't sure if I'd be able to take my hardtail up there, but now I'm encouraged! Yewwwww!
Right on, Mark! There are definitely enough HT friendly trails available from the top of the lifts to make it worth it! FYI, keep an eye out for next week’s vid from The Outsider MTB. 😉
Also, Kelly and Katy both rode HTs at Snow Summit and had a blast.
@@mtb_alan awesome! Thanks Alan! Keep rockin!
Good points on etiquette. I realized I could've been cutting people in line that I thought were waiting for a friend to get off the lift.
👍🏾
Really good general guidelines for any park
Thanks Mike! That was my secret mission. 😆
Went up a few weeks ago love the vid
Sweet! Thanks.
I'm long time dirt biker...not much bike experience...just turned 60 but in good shape...gunna give the park a try towards later July...thank you for the overview!
Heck yeah, Bob! Your dirt bike experience will definitely help you out. Rad to see you staying in the game. 👊🏽
Don't come up on a Saturday......
The lines on Saturday were over 30 minutes...ouch
Ha! Yeah...the lines can get a bit long.
Sundays tend to be a bit slower than Saturdays. Hope you’re stoke will last until next season when they trails are open again. 😬
thank god i’m coming up on friday
you had me at "epic mustache"
thanks for making the vid, i'll be heading up from PHX in a few weeks. good info!
Haha! Nice. Gimme a shout if you see me on the trail. 🤘🏾
Awesome THANKS!
No problem!
Hi Alan,
Awesome video!!! I just subscribed maybe a week or so ago. Glad I did!! I’m new to MTB (but old in years!! Lol). This video you did was excellent and so informative. I really appreciate your trail etiquette. Thank you so much for that!!! I definitely don’t want to be perceived as an old rude geezer!!! Lol!! I will go back through your catalog to see if you have any recommendations for beginner trails because I live in Torrance/Redondo Beach and I’ve just been going to Palos Verdes since that’s close to me. I only assume you live in or around Southern CA because you mention going to Snow Summit nearly every weekend. Again, I thank you. Stay safe!!
Best Regards,
Cesar
Hi Cesar! Welcome to this awesome sport! And I feel you on the age. I came into mountain biking pretty late in life, but the stoke is just as high! Also check out The Outsider MTB. He has a whole catalog of trail guides with useful links in his descriptions. 👍🏽
Love this guide Alan. 👌 perfect. Planning on going in the next month and this really helps. Could you add info regarding bike rentals?
Glad you dug it! You’re gonna have a blast.
Re: rentals. Yeah, the rentals at Summit are pretty good and the prices are pretty much what you’ll get anywhere else on the mountain. We rented a bike for a couple days when Kelly’s was in the shop, and it was painless.
Nicely done. Thanks...
No problem!
@@mtb_alan Coming home to Cali next month. Gonna try the beginner Trail going green…
@@derrickclemons2862 Awesome. Great trail!
Thanx alan, getting ready to go there my first time, been to santa village couple times but want to try my downhill bike, always use my enduro at arrowhead, going to take a day off during the week and take it nice and easy, can't wait but i'm sure i'll have butterflies to the max, well thanx again, hope to talk again,if not then the day didn't go so well..LOL.
Heck yeah! Hope you have a rad day!
Alan, well done sir. We are heading up Friday. Can’t wait, it’s our first time to SS. Thanks for the tour 👍🏻
Thanks! Hope you have a rad time! I might be up there too!
How funny, you are right behind me. You got a crowd of people hanging out with you on chair two
👋🏽 😆
That place is a blast. See you around man 🍻
Great video yet again Alan. Hope to see you up there soon. I pulled the statement I posted earlier about Party Wave and Westridge being blue trails I thought. I looked at the 2018 trail map, and they're blacks.
🤘🏽
Awesome video new to your channel and like the content. This was the first video I saw a few weeks ago and I came to re watch. I’m a beginner (so much so that I haven’t hit any trails yet) and on the heavy side. I have a entry level GT aggressor hardtail would you say it’s ok to hit going green with that or should I upgrade my tires at least. If thats the case what tire would you recommend from the maxxis line up?
Welcome to this awesome sport! That bike should be fine on Going Green. You might also take it on the Pirates-Plumbers-Fern route on the backside (check the Trailforks app/website ).
As far as the tires, what’s more important is having a tubeless setup if you’re currently using tubes.
Another key upgrade would be to get some good pedals with spikes like the Oneup Composite, Kona Wahwah, or Crank Bros. Stamp.
Also good riding shoes like the FiveTen Freerider.
Tire upgrades can be nice but if you’re tires are still pretty new, wait until they’re worn to replace them. 👍🏾
Hope that helps.
that day was the first time @ Snow Summit for my boy and I. In fact, we are in this vid. It was the one of the best time on wheels I've had.
Heck yeah, Jeff!
True! Bike park beats up bike fast, snapped my rear axel last week. 🤕 Nice video.
Oh dang! Sorry to hear that. Glad you dug the episode!
Broke a spoke on Going green warm-up run last weekend, then got a flat on my second run...
@@MTBMOR DAg.
Thank you. My dad used to say “ride it before you race it.”
💯
I AM GOING THIS WEEKEND FOR THE FIRST TIME AND THIS HELPS A LOT...THANKS ALAN! ..CAN YOU PARK OVERNIGHT IN THE PARKING LOT? PLANNING TO SLEEP IN MY CAR..
My pleasure! Gimme a shout if you see me up there!
you were right about miracle mile; I dipped and went to turtle trail at the split
Good call.
E x e m p l a r y ! Thank you!
My pleasure!
Thanks for a really helpful video Alan. My first time to Snow Summit (any bike park) was riding in the EWS last fall. I rode my 100mm XC FS bike, and needless to say was in waaaay over my head. But I survived and plan to go back this year with a more appropriate bike once the Covid situation settles down. Did you feel safe at the park in that respect?
Way to run what you brung with that 100mm bike! I feel relatively safe up there. The lines are the only place where people get very close but the bikes in the mix help keep some distance. That and being outside with some wind helps.
Started this hobby when snow summit opened. This video is STILL timely, not the least because I convinced my posse to join me next time, now they have a way better guide
Oh dang, John. You been in it a looooong time! Thanks for the kind words. Hope you can get your buddies up there! 🤘🏽
@@mtb_alan ...like opened for the season haha!!! So new its ridiculous, but what can I say your vids got me hyped
Northstar opens this weekend. First time at a park, I'm stoked
Sweet! I've heard good things about Northstar. Hopefully some of the general tips in here will help!
Been snowboarding for 10+ years and getting into mtb. Just bought a new bike and super stoked!!! Interesting to see Miracle Mile is a black diamond. It’s a super easy green during snow season. Haha. Thanks for the overview!
My pleasure! I know, it's funny. When I first went up to snowboard, I was initially scared of Miracle Mile because of my MTB experience. 😆 And yeah, welcome the sport! 🤘🏽
@@mtb_alan I am looking to buy a helmet and can't decide between full face or half shell. I know the pros/cons of each kind, but from your experience. Is a full face helmet too hot for riding in OC area? I was looking to get a Fox Pro Frame. I don't want to buy multiple helmets.
yeah! 🔥
Yeyer!
