I can’t imagine the amount of work you put into this, but man, this is the best “how to” jump tutorial I’ve ever seen. The visuals and breakdown made me realize why I jump the way I do (bucked and front end heavy). Going to apply this to my next time out on the jump line. Probably asking for too much, but it would be neat if you did a “how to” drop tutorial in the same fashion.
Really useful video, thanks! I'm 65 and struggle with the traditional advice regarding jumping i.e. do a bunny hop. Your tips are spot on! Keep up the good work!!

Last "session" I realized my legs were key and you nailed that. I had seen row from another video, so the simple tips you gave are great and now I am going to work on where I am looking, then more row, and make sure I keep using the legs. Thanks...

I thought this video was going to be the same as every other one, but I was presently surprised. The "look up past the lip" technique is a great tip. It will subconsciously put your body in a better position. I hate when people say to "bunny hop" off the lip. That's not how it works. You explained it very well. Great video.
Hi Alan. I used your jumping techniques from this video today on Partywave and Westridge and I got some unexpected air over a few lips on both runs. I have to say, your advise on this video worked very well. It was my first time in both runs and I followed the techniques in this video and it worked very well! Thank you! So something that was shown to me by a professional bike park instructor was that a common cause of going nose heavy is overboosting with the legs, and I was taught to press with both hands and feet and that pressing more with the hands will keep the nose up and pressing more with the feet will kick the tail up. In any case, a boosted jump will pretty much always feel much more controlled than simply hitting the lip with a lot of speed, no boosting at all is a great way to go nose heavy.
I'm a really good tech rider and ride alot of rooty stuff/rocky stuff and also really fast, good cornerer. but never got jumps right, always got bucked. This video is great advice, gonna use it next time I go ride, hopefully I'll be able to progress!
Went out yesterday and tried jumping a little table top on my MTB for the first time. I felt okay as far as stability (no nose diving) but I just couldn’t clear the middle. I think looking upward will help me a lot. Thanks and sick edits 🙌🏽💯
Thanks Alan for all the hard work. Sessioning with that row technique (especially the pull to hips) has revolutionized my jump game. People always told me to bunny hop off lips, and I was always confused by this b/c I have a good bunny hop and jumping with the bunny hop technique always felt sketchy. Your tips as an intermediate rider who is newer to jumping have made me become less confused by and excited about jumping. Today, I attempted my first suicide no-handed after not being able to clear the jumps 3-months ago. TLDR: Sorry for the rambling comment, but I am stoked on the learning to jump content!
Hi Benjamin! Not rambling at all. I dig hearing your story. Stumbled onto this video due to RUclips algorithms.... Good job with it... You have some really high production for a smaller channel.... Keep it up... Subscribed
Agree with the others here. Very well explained. I especially like how you suggest not really going for the bunny hop motions due to the speed, forces and the fact that the lip already does half the bunny hop for you anyway. Puling too hard with the arms can cause some real problems like leaning too far back on take off where you land in a leaned back position and loop out. That hurts. Driving down with the feet, consciously riding my back tire off the lip while still in the motion of pushing my weight up is the thought process that seems to work best for me. When helping people learn to jump, I always correct anyone that tells them to pull up. I'm like "no that will develop bad habits. Push up with your feet and let your arms flex with that motions, but don't let them really pull."
@@mtb_alan Haha, thx man. I hope those are somewhat solid tips. I'll say all that with a couple of big caveats. My biggest problem with jumps is lifting the rear tire early. I never really learned the American bunny hop. I've been doing the British style bunny hop where both tires leave the ground in unison since I was a kid. And I'm American, go figure. So, when I drive up with my feet, sometimes my timing is a little too early and I lift early and do not get the full benefit of the lip's real estate if you know what I mean. The other caveat is that I clip in, which does make it harder to bail quickly, yikes!

Great video Alan, some solid tips, great advice on concentrating on one thing at a time. One thing no one ever mentions though is how much you need to do it. By my very unscientific reckoning you need to hit around 2500 jumps just to start feeling comfortable hitting moderate sized jumps (FYI I’m an old fart so I’m sure the younger and braver would need less). Sounds a lot but they add up really quick, and really builds the muscle memory needed.
Glad you appreciated that. I was a CrossFit trainer for several years, and saw how quickly an athlete could make progress with a little bit of singular focus. And in terms of 2500 jump reps...! I will have to do some math and figure out how many jumps I did during the Snow Summit summer season. 🤔 😆
This is a great tutorial for beginners like myself. Love how you used your fridge to demonstrate... The only thing is to get rid of the annoying music in the background while you're talking! Or at least turn it down a lot more... Still, great video!
Good advice, I’m working on the row part atm .... I saw you on the Joey podcast and have the same way of coming up with a story for my vids .... watch all your footage from the ride and build a story based on what happens with a general idea going into it 🤙🏼
That buck tutorial is great. So just look into the abyss when taking off? Not even the landing? Personally I Look at the lip until I'm close to it then I don't know where I look, it's just automatic. And for the movement in the air, do you start that motion before you're in the air or right when you take off sort of like bunny hopping off the lip
Thanks!

EXCELLENT VIDEO ALAN... Thanks for the MAD TIPS!!
My pleasure!
Super high quality video man! Great job! 🤘🤘🤘
Thanks!
This is a great tutorial for beginners like myself. Love how you used your fridge to demonstrate...
The only thing is to get rid of the annoying music in the background while you're talking!
Or at least turn it down a lot more...
Still, great video!
Thanks! But what annoying music? I don’t hear any annoying music. 🤔
Excellent video! Well structured and explained. Looking forward to seeing more
🙏🏾
Wow... That was amazing 🤘🏼😂🤘🏼
That auto tune 🤣
Hee hee! 🎙
Man so bummed Summit closed already and can't practice this stuff! Will have to remember to watch at the beginning of next season
Same. But you don’t have to wait to try the tips.
I'm subscribing for the effort you put into this video but mostly because I thought you were Skills with Phil who finally got a tan
Thanks for subscribing! Maybe I don’t look like a tan white guy. Maybe Phil looks like a pale brown guy. 🤯
Rad vid as usual! Gonna use that look up into the air tip!
Thanks! I hope it helps. 👊🏾
Thank you Alan for this video, and if you decide to give a clinic class, I’m in! 🤙🍻
My pleasure! Ha...I'm far from qualified to give a clinic. But I'll let you know. 😆
Good advice, I’m working on the row part atm .... I saw you on the Joey podcast and have the same way of coming up with a story for my vids .... watch all your footage from the ride and build a story based on what happens with a general idea going into it 🤙🏼
Right on! The row is still something I have to remind myself to do.
Great tips! I'm, fo sho, for Row over Wade 😉 I never know if I should be covering the breaks on the take off.
I don’t go anywhere near the brakes anywhere on a jump. 😬
Very good explanation bud. Definitely give these a go🤟🏻
Thanks! Hope it helps. 👊🏾
Thanks for the tips!
My pleasure!
Thanks for the tips bro important the session practice makes perfect
My pleasure. Practice makes habit. Perfect practice makes perfect. ;)
Good explanation, thanks Alan
Thanks! My pleasure.
Dig the stop motion... I just recently started working on jumping... so far, I am the very definition of "dead sailor" LOL
Thanks! Ha…hope this helps you be less of a dead sailor. 😆
@@mtb_alan ... you and me both buddy... 😂
All explained in this video.
@@mtb_alan Yeah, I watched it again, makes sense now!
@@ConnerSatterthwaite 🤘🏾
great video Alan
👊🏾
Hey bro, just on the point of looking in the air whilst jumping, do you look into nothing or concentrate on say a tree on the distance? Class vid BTW
Thanks! I don't look at anything in particular. I let my eyes follow the imaginary line that would extend off the end of the lip. Hope that helps.
