I can’t imagine the amount of work you put into this, but man, this is the best “how to” jump tutorial I’ve ever seen. The visuals and breakdown made me realize why I jump the way I do (bucked and front end heavy). Going to apply this to my next time out on the jump line. Probably asking for too much, but it would be neat if you did a “how to” drop tutorial in the same fashion.
@@mtb_alan Will do, hoping to get out to the trails this weekend. I tend to get stuck going sideways in the air. I think a lot of it is confidence, so I'll be sure to put these tips into practice to help with that.

Thanks Alan for all the hard work. Sessioning with that row technique (especially the pull to hips) has revolutionized my jump game. People always told me to bunny hop off lips, and I was always confused by this b/c I have a good bunny hop and jumping with the bunny hop technique always felt sketchy. Your tips as an intermediate rider who is newer to jumping have made me become less confused by and excited about jumping. Today, I attempted my first suicide no-handed after not being able to clear the jumps 3-months ago. TLDR: Sorry for the rambling comment, but I am stoked on the learning to jump content!
Hi Benjamin! Not rambling at all. I dig hearing your story. And I'm stoked to know that I'm not the only one who 1. was also not convinced about bunnyhopping off lips and 2. got so much from the rowing movement. Super stoked for your progression! I'm still too scared to take a hand off, but dang do those tuck no-handers looks sick!
Alan, you really do GOOD work. In the last year I would say I've learned the most useful stuff from YOU and the Kyle and April channel. Thank you, and keep it up.
Agree with the others here. Very well explained. I especially like how you suggest not really going for the bunny hop motions due to the speed, forces and the fact that the lip already does half the bunny hop for you anyway. Puling too hard with the arms can cause some real problems like leaning too far back on take off where you land in a leaned back position and loop out. That hurts. Driving down with the feet, consciously riding my back tire off the lip while still in the motion of pushing my weight up is the thought process that seems to work best for me. When helping people learn to jump, I always correct anyone that tells them to pull up. I'm like "no that will develop bad habits. Push up with your feet and let your arms flex with that motions, but don't let them really pull."
@@mtb_alan Haha, thx man. I hope those are somewhat solid tips. I'll say all that with a couple of big caveats. My biggest problem with jumps is lifting the rear tire early. I never really learned the American bunny hop. I've been doing the British style bunny hop where both tires leave the ground in unison since I was a kid. And I'm American, go figure. So, when I drive up with my feet, sometimes my timing is a little too early and I lift early and do not get the full benefit of the lip's real estate if you know what I mean. The other caveat is that I clip in, which does make it harder to bail quickly, yikes!
A couple days ago I found this perfect session jump into a massive berm. It was about 18-20 feet table and I was trying to progress so I kept progressing just barely casing it at the end until my derailleur hanger snapped in half randomly.
Really useful video, thanks! I'm 65 and struggle with the traditional advice regarding jumping i.e. do a bunny hop. Your tips are spot on! Keep up the good work!!

That buck tutorial is great. So just look into the abyss when taking off? Not even the landing? Personally I Look at the lip until I'm close to it then I don't know where I look, it's just automatic. And for the movement in the air, do you start that motion before you're in the air or right when you take off sort of like bunny hopping off the lip
Thanks for this vid Alan, I'm a pro at dead sailor and scouting local trails that i can session. Found some local socal trails but they all intimidate me. Maybe if i can find a coach for sessions. 🤔
Wondering if I could get a bit of advice...Seems like about 1 out of maybe a dozen times my bike "rolls" (like how an airplane rolls in the air) after I leave the lip. Most times it's not much and I can catch it by turning into it when I land, but I smashed pretty good yesterday and now I'm kinda spooked. Any idea why this happens and what I can work on to keep it from happening? Thanks!
Dang sorry to hear that you smashed. I can't really diagnose without watching you. But I would say it sounds like you're basically going dead sailor. It's pretty much impossible to avoid rotating around any axis when you're in the air. That's why the the rowing motion I show in this vid is so useful. It lets you decide what is rotating. Hopefully doing the rowing motion will reduce your roll. When you say "an airplane roll" you mean as in the movement that happens when you're leaning the bike over in a turn, yeah?
@@mtb_alan Yeah, I leave the lip and the bike immediately starts leaning to the right. I'm thinking you're probably right about the "rowing" as when I do manage to remember to do that it feel natural, it's just that the "leaning" feeling is so immediate that I think it overwhelms me and all I can do is hold on and hope I can catch it on the landing. This must not happen to many riders since there isn't anything on youtube as to how to avoid it!
Yeah. I’ve not heard anybody talk about consistently leaning to one side on every jump. Might be something about the way you tend to ride or something you do every time you hit a lip. We are all asymmetrical and we all tend to have a favored side and when in survival mode, that can be amplified...just guessing at this point. 😆
@@mtb_alan Thanks for the replies. Soon as my shoulder feels better I'll be back at it taking it more easy and concentrating on this to see if I can isolate the issue. Headed to Bentonville for 2 weeks over X-mas and New Years. I'll have plenty of opportunity to work on this then!
For the row to work, do we need to be almost weightless on the front? My best explanation is almost like jumping a unicycle at that point of all weight in the legs and rear wheel?
Good question. Id say the weightless moment happens more as your starting to push the bars forward. But really, I wouldn’t think too much about it. Start with a small movement and feel it out.

I used to start very confident until recently I have 20 stitches in my mouth for doing simple tabletop jump 🤣 can anyone help me as well on getting the courage to do it? I want to do it but... more like I’m scared...?
Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Hope you're healing up all right. Building back confidence is a process that we all go through after an injury. You're definitely not alone with that. Take your time coming back to jumps. I would say really work on the fundamentals like body positioning and braking, and take your process step by step. Ideally, you could get a few in-person coaching sessions, but with COVID right now, it would probably be better to access an online course like the Ryan Leech Connection or Fluid Ride. I hope this helps!
Ah yeah, that’s tricky. You’re kind of in between sizes on some bikes. I’m the same but between S and M. Have you tried a shorter stem or adjusting stack height or bar roll? Maybe that’ll help some. 🤞🏾
Changed everything.. But still can't recover my last drop fall after that scared of jumps. But will try to get a small frame... Whenever I jump with large frame my butt kisses the tire 🤣🤣🤣🤣.....
Hmmm…smaller frame might be more comfortable but hitting your butt on your rear tire sounds like it might be more of a technique issue. You shouldn’t be that far back on the bike during a jump. 🤔
He said this rider and that rider, Showed videos of other riders, Ok, goodbye. Seriously though, this is serious. What he is saying is correct, but DON'T try it. I mean start off with something simple like a street curb. THERE IS NO SUCH A THING AS A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO JUMPING A MOUNTAIN BIKE. Jumping a mountain bike in a city park might be ok, but on a mountain, or a moderate jump, or a drop. Not OK! A beginners guide starts with an experienced rider showing you exactly what to and not to do. Starts with the basics and works up slowly
Thanks!

Step 1: Ride Blue Steel
Step 2: Get sad because it wont be back until Memorial Day 2021
Step 3: Drink until it's over.
Oh man...I feel you, man. 😢
On top of that, I still had a day left on my Quad Pass! 😢
I'm 5.9....n I'm regretting purchasing a large frame 🤣🤣🤣🤣... Can't do the jumps after that. It totally destroyed my body position..
Sorry but I can't with dat beerdd
You don’t have to.
Not like Henry David Thoreau... 😂
😂
Please shave
I shave my chin regularly.
I was good until “dead sailor”. My last name is Sailer. Now I’m spooked. LoL.
Oh no! Well, just be a living Sailer!
Same here, except that I am a sailor, not a Sailer.
Wow... That was amazing 🤘🏼😂🤘🏼
That auto tune 🤣
Hee hee! 🎙
Nice tips 👌🤘
Thanks!
Is the pumping with the legs will also work on a hardtail? Appreciate your response.
Pretty much. Remember that the majority of your suspension is in your legs. 😉👍🏾
You stepped up the sound effects so much and yet I'm stilled bummed about the lack of fist bumps.
Ha! That’s funny. I totally thought about the lack of 🤜🏽 💥 🤛🏽 in this episode. 😆
Thanks for the tips!
My pleasure!
good tips
