- What the Pro's Wont Tell You About Learning to Jump on a Mountain Bike | How to Jump a Mountain Bike
One of the hardest things to learn on a mountain bike for me was learning to jump. Though, I knew how to bunnyhop for a few years before I learned to Jump, I did not understand how to utilize the bunnyhop in conjunction with jumping a mountain bike. The pro's would say that learning to bunnyhop is essential for learning to jump, but still I could not figure out how the two worked together. In this video I'm going to be revealing the mystery behind how bunnyhopping works in conjunction with jumping a mountain bike. I will also teach you some very useful secrets that pretty much every video by a pro that I have seen fails to reveal.

This is by far, the best jumping breakdown video I've ever seen! Great job, brother!
Wow that means a lot brother thank you 😎🤘
The psychological side is sometimes more important than the actual doing, realizing the jump and the landing makes a huge difference in overcoming fear, great video and perception 👍
I'll be honest that was a way better breakdown on how to jump than almost all other tutorials.
Wow brother thank you for that, please share with as many as you can 🤣🤘
@@MTBdropIN is it odd that when I learned to jump I felt that learning how to pump helped more than learning bunny hops? I have no clue why I am watching jump tutorials but RUclips sent me here, great tutorial btw.
I’m 57 coming from a BMX background with no experience on full suspension bikes. I have done the dead sailor, got bucked and cased while my friends would clear jumps with perfection. I began just focusing on suspension set up to give me the ability to pop up after compressing the front. I would hit jumps and make it safely and sometimes even boost a jump and getting consistent is still an art form. Those blind jumps are no problem and Now other people are watching me. My advice is to just focus on safely jumping to get the hang of it and practice boosting on table top jumps. Speed , angle of stance and level out will come with time. Crashes rarely happen even though I have had some close calls ( like riding 🎉he front tire out after sending a jump to fast) now my bike is called ,”little pop” and life is good
"every time you fail"... every time I fail I take 3 months of partial and 6 months of full recovery lmao. but ye thanks this video is a gamechanger.
Lol 🤣 well one more crash over with before making it happen lol
The best explaining how to jump i have ever seen
Ha ha right on
PTSD guy right here and mountain biking saved my life. Helped me quit drinking and keeps my 39 year old ass in shape! Love you PMA and approach to offing tips for us non-pro softies. Any tips for hardtail jumping?
No not yet but in time 😉
BMX helps. It is the same motion and technique on any size bike, plus they are a bit smaller and easier to bail off of. And best of all, they are cheaper by far and hard to kill.
Same! PTSD guy here as well! Biking saved my life as well!
I have PTSD from learning to jump ;-)... Still at it ,
I'm nobody, but the biggest difference seems to be adapting to the lack of rear sus rebound and compression. Jumping a hardtail can be easier in some ways. I find it more intuitive to think about compressing just the front fork as opposed to weighting the bottom bracket (therefore both sus components) and transferring weight for micro-adjustment of rotation.
Ur description of how the pros do it is so spot-on. I’ve watched tons of vids and learned a lot of technique, but was missing what u provided in this vid. Thanks for posting 👍🏾
Glad it was helpful!
So much respect. The best teachers are those who have to struggle to get there, this inspired me a ton to keep practicing because I am legit scared of heights as well! Thanks man.
Ha ha right on brother keep sharing with me your progress
After watching dozens of jumping videos I've never seen to load both front and back equally and to not pull back (no L) on a jump. I bet I've never loaded the front enough. Can't wait to try this new approach. Really loved the video and the positive concept behind it. Keep 'em coming!
Right on brother anytime let me know how it goes
This is sick, I’ve done extreme sports pretty much my whole life and just started mountain biking about a month ago. Love the message and intentions you’er coming with. My brother does something similar with skateboarding. These things really are great outlets for everything you named. Keep it up man 🙌🏽💯
Love it! Great vid☺️🤙
Thanks. I think you are a good motivator. Can't wait to practice more!
Right on brother thank you for thet!
This is really the best and real description of how it's done! I've seen all the PRO explanations but they all skip important steps. Compressing the fork as well is never ever mentioned. Keep up the good job!
Right on brother thank you
Yeah theyre like "just preload dude" and you wonder why youre getting bucked otb lol
One thing that always stuck in my mind was when you explain that the jump lifts the front wheel for you. Such great advice and so obvious when you think about it. After hearing that I stopped pulling up on my bars and going dead sailor. Your advice really made things click for me. I watched this a year ago. 1 year later and I'm jumping like a boss. Cheers dude. 10/10
Wow man thank you for this testimony
This is really good, bro! 👌🏼
Thanks brother 😎🤘
Great video! I found overthinking the whole process the hardest. I feel like that whole notion not wanting to get hurt almost get you in bigger trouble. Just huck n prey repeatedly until you dull out that sensation of falling!
Lol, I think we would have a whole lot of people broken if we bucked and prayed 🤣
No. I think go higher and faster as you feel more comfortable not before. Crash again = more anxiety
Like the way you explain the technique. I’m now a Sub!
ha ha thanks.... welcome!!!! :)
Haha same here
Such a great break down. Thank you! And thank you for admitting how nerve racking it is to learn to jump. I'm in my late 40's and just starting to learn to jump. My videos show me not pre-loading and getting the form right, so my nose drops and I almost go OTB. And I love your mission of mental health and MTB! I work in personal development so I find the same synergy between the trails and life. Grateful for the work you're doing and glad I found your channel!
Dude thank you for this very encouraging comment and thank you for supporting the mission
I love your positivity man. Great video. Thanks!
Right on brother thank you!!
Subbed. Reason: you’ve been able to demonstrate these two things in such a decluttered and simplest way. Thank you.
Right on brother anytime
Right on brother anytime
Same 👍🏼
It all makes sense now...I always thought I had to pull back 😱
So glad to hear and help 😎🤘
only if you want to do a flip ;)
@@onionridetv And to be completely honest the back flip is easy, even for a beginner.... Coming rubber side down is the tricky part ;)
I like what you're doing with your channel. I'm new to mountain biking and I have a lot to learn but I also know I can go out in a horrible mood and be all smiles when I'm done.
Right on brother thank you so much talk to you soon
Great video! Keep them coming~
Yes sir
Lightbulb moment!! I was always confused about sending my weight back and how that would work in the take-off thanks for clearing that up, it was the missing piece that I needed. Love ya work keep crankin it out. Rich Drew is great but it is good to hear from a non-pro who is like the rest of us.
Wow brother thanks for sharing this feedback with me 🤘
Can I add same as this comment, but with a little more. Standing UP. Not getting weight back, but standing up. I was trying to push through my feet the whole time, then pulling up some, with straight arms, WRONG. Push through feet and arms, to load up, then stand up at the top of lip. The bars will come back as you hit the lip, so you don't need to pull back, which I was doing. Arms should be straight, which will stop you going off to the side. ONCE OFF THE LIP, Then, gently push forward to meet the landing. I just need to get braver standing up now. Watched the slo mo here loads of times, and finally, the standing up bit clicked. Still not sending it but now know where I'm falling down. Thanks
@@derman3658 Well it really depends on the shape of the jump, but basically you should throw yourself a little bit back if you really want to get some height. But consider going back with your upper body only, not your butt. Especially on the steeper lips it will be happening naturally, because it prevents you from soaking the top of the lip which leads to potential OTB. In smaller lips or less steep you should lean back more by yourself and you will get the maximum potencial from the lip. I think when you start to jump more steeper lips, it teaches you by itself naturally to push your upperbody little bit backwards and afterwards you transfer this 'body knowledge' efortlessly to less steep lips.
Great video. As I approach my 50th, I suffer the fears you did when it comes to jumping. Wish I was in my teens again, when I had no fear, but over coming them is a big goal, as my youngest daughter has started riding with me, and I would love her to learn.
Lol, I hear you but just be so blessed and excited to ride with your daughter that’s the real sender!!!
I'm 57 and I learn how to jump at 55, started MTB at 54. So I am telling you, you can still do more. I had a lot of crashes, and it's all part of the game. One biker says, "If you are not crashing you are not challenging yourself enough". Just keep on sending it!
Awesome video and very insightful approach to recognize how NEW people learn vs how Pros describe things. Also LOVE integrating mental health into MTB! We’re along this ride with you! 💯💪
Damn! I've been struggling for years over jumps. You blew my mind. Trying this asap. Thanks.
Ha ha yes let me know how it goes Over time
“That’s one less time I have to do it before I actually succeed” true in everything in life
😎🤘
Hey Tony hope all is well. And yeah back in the day them huffys I bunny hoped is nothing like a mtb.
Ha ha seriously I really want a hardtail but don’t feel like re learning anything lol
MTBdropIN yeah I went and got a 29 hardtail to learn the bigger wheels I guess I’m stuck with 26 inch I’m just way comfortable with them my wife I got her a 27.5 hardtail she loves hers. But I’m just gonna keep plugging on it. I have a old steel frame gt I building and making it a hardtail and yup keeping the v brakes to look old school with it. One I can just thrash with no worries.
Dude that’s awesome you gonna save a ton of money 🤣🤘
Hes doing a Pro Hop, not a bunny hop its 2 different things, a bunny hop is when both wheels pop of the ground at the same time
Thanks for the lesson
Dude, this was the video I needed to connect what I was doing and what I needed to be doing to clear jumps. Thank you 🙏🏻
please please please address the one thing that i notice when learning, to simply make sure that when you practice wheelies or anything that gets you front wheel off the ground,, That when you land trying to keep your front wheel straight,,
That you are not pulling in favor of your dominant arm, and end up over the bars... when practicing that be aware of it,, I learned the hard way,,
That is what i think the pro's take for granted its second nature to them,,,, keep up the good work...
Dude send me a vid on Instagram explaining what you are talking about I don’t understand but it sounds valuable
I'm a year in and suffer from the same issue though less and less as I practice. He doesn't cover it in the video because you're not pulling up coming out of preload and its something he probably didn't experience. When you load the bike, you shouldn't have to pull up, its more like, as the bike is unloading you're also unweighting in a sense. Everything comes up together and you shift your weight to level the bike as he explains.
@@JerrySpallone good stuff
On the landing of a small jump, there was a quick left turn, I anticipated the turn " before landing", My wheel was not straight on landing, Over the bars i went.. Also some how i'm pulling with my right arm just enough to not land straight ,, I hope this helps.... I'm not a video guy don't have a clue...
@@matthewbasquez4373 id say you're not preloading enough therefore you're pulling to compensate and your dominant arm is pulling a little harder. I posted a 17min slow mo vid on my YT to document my progress and see how others were hitting the same jump. Def helps to see various techniques and how they effect take off and landing. Im on the blue pivot in the video.
This was actually super helpful to me. I'm pushing 40 and have been mountain biking for 10 years (gravel, XC, then trail riding and finally getting into enduro for the past two years). I can bunny hop and do drops but im still not confident in my jumps at all. Applied this and instantly got better. It's crazy how so little can go so long. Great tutorial! Subbed!
Finally a well justified and amazingly explained jumping tutorial! Not the usual “you just jump and feel“ stuff. Keep up the great work!
Thanks, will do!
man - I love your honesty with facing, accepting and overcoming your fear and anxiety. That's a MASSIVE life-skill and achievement. Keep doing that. And keep helping others to do that. Much respect - put yourself out there to help others. Support for others … THAT is what life is about.
Thank you so much for this feedback 🤘😎

Great video! The positivity is very helpful!
No worries anytime!
What an excellent breakdown for jumping. I also too get severe anxiety when trying to tackle jumps and most of the time bail out before going off the jump. Thanks for your humility and understanding of a beginner like me goes through with this stuff!
right on brother anytime im glad you were encouraged so stoked
Best explanation I have seen. Thank you.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Great video man 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
right on brother thank you
What a great channel bro nice to see that you focus on mental health by introducing people to mtb!! I just started MTBing like a month ago and I’m loving it!! 🙌🏼
Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou ... I have been strugging with exactly THIS ... and nobody has made this Bunny Hop relevant to Jump clear to me until this ... GREAT vid

Great video! Love the vulnerability. Thanks.
Right on anytime 🤘
I've seen many tutorials on how to jump using the bunny hop but AFAIK you were the only one who mentioned to forget step 3 of bunny hop and the reason behind it. You are a very good teacher!
Thanks brotha 🤘
So real. Subbed. Thanks!
Ha ha right on brother thank yiu
Thanks Tony, that's just what I needed! I am confident on senders, since they are straight. It is when the lip comes into play that I struggle. You really made sense to me....can't wait to try it!
Right on brother please let me know how the process goes!!!
Love how clear and simple your explanation is, really breaking it down to the basics. Great job
Right on brother thank you
Appreciate this so much. Liked, subscribed.
Right on brotha thank you hit the notification 😎🤘
I have a fear of heights and anxiety in general, haven't even finished the video but already feel motivated 💪🏽
Well taught my man!!! Very comprehensive!
Right on brother 🤘🤘🤘😎
Hey mate, as a person suffering with PTSD I love your work. I miss doing jumps and as an over 40 now I have to relearn how to jump again and it has nothing to do with technique anymore for me and everything to do with mental game.
Thanks again
Trent
No worries anytime and keep shredding , and stay focused on what’s ahead!
really good channel man, great cause too...keep it up! The "stand up to the jump" technique is def the way to go!
Probably the best tutorial I’ve seen 🤙🏻🤙🏻
ha ha right on brother I really appreciate that a ton.
Nice vid bro. Like the advice and that you look out for that mental health.
That was a great informative video! Good job 👏🏼
Right on brother anytime!!!
Thank you for this! I always find it incredibly helpful to hear people who obviously have a brain and aren‘t 420-ing all of their rides talk about the fear. I am currently working on finally mastering a 5ft drop that has me at 50/50 for coming down rolling (unfortunately only rolling) or going down badly and a lot of my locals are talking it up or down as in those who can do it will talk it down and the rest makes it sound like it is sending Everest. It‘s great to hear and read in the comments that I am not the only guy who contemplates his life choices doing this stuff, and although going off a lip is not strictly related to my issue (my last attempt was a bunny to nosedive and it has scarred my soul), the open way in which you address your own fear was super helpful. A friend who‘s pretty much my level if not a little behind on some things just send my drop and I feel pressured to keep up, so cross your fingers for me ;-)
Ha ha let me know how it goes then lol
Best jumping video. I watched this twice, including right before my last ride and things finally clicked. My confidence and control just increased ten fold. Thanks!!
Damnnnnnn 🤣🤘
Please share this vids with others 😜🤘
Great vid man. I'm still trialing all the different rubbish out there on TY regarding jumping and you have hit the nail on the head i think.

Great tips and in-depth explanation of the formula. Good job. Your awesome.
Right on brother thank you!
This is an amazing explanation thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Well explained bruvver, the motion you explained filled in those vital details I've been missing, thank you!!!!
Your so welcome 😊🤘
The best explanation! I’ve gone to every “famous” MTB RUclips channel, and they missed the part where we should get rid of the backward push of the manual. They wouldn’t mention it either, but they didn’t explicitly say we should omit that step. For two months I could barely raise my bike from the ramp and if you had seen my shin I had my pedal pins tattooed all over it. Also, I never heard about leveling the bike.
right on brother im so happy I was able to help, I created this video to do just that its amazing to hear how much you dig it!
