Same injury happened to a buddy of mine from a front tire wash out. As a surgeon, he was concerned to say the least. Way to get back out there and keep shredin!!
That sucks, Brother! These ‘post crash’ analysis vids are a lot more helpful than how to ones. I love your acronym. Def spent time going over it. I too had a bad crash this Summer and did a video explaining my mistakes. Again, thanks for posting this and I wish you well healing up! Jealous of the Stache-chops👊🏻
Hey man! Thanks! I'm glad you find the vid useful I will have to check out your vid too. Hope you're healing up. Ha! Regarding the chops: just trim the chin! 😆
Such a great video. I appreciate your honesty and I know that most of my wipeouts have been because of the autopilot/bad habits on sketchy sections. So much of mountain biking is the mental game. I have a great interest in your story since I’m in the early stages of ankle fracture/surgery recovery from my crash and I am enjoying seeing you get back into your groove. I can’t wait to get back out there!
Finally hit 10ply for the first time today, twice. No crashes and had a great time even on my 26" with trail tires and open face. Thanks for the heads up on this video which instilled the seriousness of a split second error. Probably my favorite trail of all time now as it is like a mile long version of all the loose steep extra credit bits I ride every day locally. Hope you're riding and enjoying by now.
Super helpful, Alan. Stoked to ride Big Bear for the first time this summer as I’ll be in LA for five weeks. Plan to ride 5-10 days total and hope to see you on the trails. Much appreciation for the videos!
Hey Alan I know this video is old now but I helped me to find out what where my mistakes in a similar feature two weeks ago. Luckily I didn’t broke any bones but I sprained my two wrist. They are doing a lot of better but I may require a couple more weeks for a full recovery. I can’t wait to go back and start working on my MTB skills again. Thank you for all your content. 💪🏼
I really liked the feel of this video regarding the shared experience of the day. Watching your own footage and other people was good. It’s a shame about the crash but like you said it can always be worse. Wish you a speedy recovery. Thanks for the content 👍
Hey dude sorry for the pain and pins you had to endure but Thanks for the breakdown of the fall. It’s helped me to navigate some of the rides I’ve been hitting.
did close to the same. sprained my wrist and dislocated my collarbone, got a really big bone sticking out of my shoulder now. just got back on trails after a 6 week " don't even think about it". Fast recovery for you bro!
Dang gnarly’ Glad you’re able to get back on the trails. I separated my AC a couple years ago so I’m part of that shoulder bone club! 😆 Thanks! Taking it day by day. 👍🏽
Sorry to hear about crash and thanks for sharing. Hope your are feeling better. In looking at the video, it appears that you may not have had enough to speed to carry your through that section in turn causing your front wheel to drop. We always learn more from our failures to at our successes.
Wow, just watched this Alan and it was really painful to see you crash. I had a bad OTB like that early this year, brings back memories. Blew out my shoulder now I finally had surgery to repair. I'm off my Trek 'till early next year, Doc says could be 4 months. it's killing me I wanna ride so bad. BOSS, dang that makes so much sense, 100%. It's so easy to auto pilot on trails known. Thanks so much for the share, I'm on learning overload. Happy you've recovered and better than ever.
Man...sorry to hear about your injury. I feel you. It was months for me before I was even able to roll around a parking lot on a bike. I hope you heal well. Something I said in a vlog...and maybe I should do a full vid on this is instead of waiting to ride again, prepare to ride again. Of course listening to your doctor and PT, you can still do work to stay fit. When I separated my AC joint years ago, I actually totally changed my diet, and it wasn't long after coming back from that that I was fitter than I was pre-injury. The wrist injury has been a bit different...quite a bit harder to come back from, but same thing, I did a ton of leg and core work while I was unable to use my hand/wrist. But yeah man...it's good to watch vids, read, etc. But keeping moving (safely and according to doc's orders) will be huge for your fitness and mental health...especially if you can get out into the woods. (つ◕౪◕)つ━☆゚.*・。゚healing vibes!
@@mtb_alan I feel the vibes brother, Thank You. Yup, trying to keep the legs strong, the weight down and the mind strong are my biggest challenges now. Really appreciate your hard work.

Thanks for the analysis there, super helpful. I had a pretty bad wreck a few months ago. I'm back on it, and feeling good out there. All the time to reflect helped my mental recovery and ease some of the trepidation when it was time to return to the trails - I felt like I had a plan. Happy healing buddy. p.s. The Path Podcast Ep. 92 was pretty helpful to me re: dealing with the injury.
Thanks David! I'm glad you found it helpful. I'll check out that episode. Love me some Path Podcast. LOL..I always hear "The Path Podcast" in Tani's voice.
You did an excellent job on the break down. I tried to do it myself using slow-mo, but I just couldnt figure out why it happened the way it did. After hearing you explain it, it really made sense. Just glad you are ok. Like you said it could have been much worse. Great vid on this and hopefully I will retain that info when the time comes for me to commit to a rock area like that.
Thanks! I know using that process has helped me a lot. I still forget to do that and have gotten "lucky" a couple times. I try to come back to the process. I added something to the Sit to Commit part. I know take three calming breaths to clear my anxiety and settle in.
Definitely makes my AC separation hurt watching this. It’s been about 8 weeks with no riding and my new bike just came in. I’m definitely a little gun shy but I plan to follow a guideline like yours. Get well soon

Thanks Pancham! Glad you appreciated that. Recovery is going well. It's been 10 months since the crash and that right hand and forearm is still only at about 1/3 the strength as my left. Mobility is a WIP. 💪🏽
Well glad you wer ok and recovered and back on it..your clips helps me and my crew alot for preparation on how we ride..any chance you can do some clinics. With your experience, dat would be cool....drops, berms turns, jumps approach, etc...

Yeah. It was an interesting moment. I still think the butt cheek brake check played a significant role. Somebody pointed out that when Bri did it, she rolled it and was all right.
Sucks on what happen! I am struggling on a rock drop similar to this one...my elbow is swollen and scrapped up...lol...Thanks for sharing the video...I found it very helpful...Get well soon!
Great breakdown! I did something similar about 20 years ago riding something not nearly as cool, and without the modern technology we have to analyze it. I had external pins sticking out as well, and one inside, so I guess it could have been worse! In fact, I also broke a similar sit bone that JKW recently broke, so you can say it could be a lot worse! I was back on the bike in 8 weeks. My wrist was super weak but strengthened up fast. Hang in there!
good that its not worst. Anyway, I thank you for sharing the analyzation of frame to frame that will be guidance for riders to learn from. Get well soon bro🤙
i crashed in Fernie BC on the 8-9 did the same dam thing to my left arm not as bad of injury as you. Same crash over a log. 20 hr drive back to the states to see a doc.Get better i enjoy your you tube channel
Oh dang...sorry to hear! Hope you heal up quick. I'm trying not to think too much about getting back on the bike. Too much to do until then, but it's definitely my north start. 🤘🏽
Man that sucks 😢. I have footage of all three of my collarbone breaks, but I just can't put them into a video. Just too hard to watch. Cheers to you putting this out 👏👏👏👏
My first thought was about hitting rear brake too much. But why such experienced rider would do that? And then you showed right answer. In the end of the day it's physics. But mental part plays really key role. It easily can make hard trail comfortable and vice versa. It was nice analysis. So wish you all the best and get in the bike ASAP
I appreciate the comment. I did hit the rear brake...just with my butt. 😆 And definitely the mental game is key. Thanks for the good thoughts. Healing up day by day. 💪🏽
Wow Alan that was indeed a nasty fall.I wish I had my fall on camera but i didn't..That's very similar to my fall at Greer..glad surgery went well.I go in tomorrow for the same type of injury..rest well it's going to be awhile. '
My pleasure. True, the hip hinge is one foundational part of any athletic movement. It's the most basic thing any movement coach learns about. But it's one part of athletic movement and when over-used or used at the wrong time can cause problems. In this case, it was my hinging that caused the crash. I hinged too much and too early. What's important to remember about the hip hinge, is that it's not a static solution but rather a dynamic preparation. This means it works best as part of a MOVEMENT not as a position. True, it loads your posterior chain more, so it takes stress off your quads and better allows your legs to act as suspension. But more importantly, hinging at the hip loads your posterior chain, i.e. your biggest muscles, i.e. your butt and hamstrings. And we LOAD a thing in order to FIRE that thing. So loading the posterior change, works best when you're getting ready to OPEN that hinge to generate power, i.e. open your hips for something like a pump or a jump. Hope that helps!
Good video. I just had a season ending crash myself and I am still not sure I want to watch the footage, let alone post it. I'm 2 weeks out and had surgery on my ankle.
Thanks Rob! Sorry to hear about the ankle. Hope you heal up well. Yeah, take your time. It was therapeutic for me to see what happened and own my mistakes, but it’s not for everyone. You don’t want to add to the trauma. Hang in there and take it day by day. 👊🏽
Thanks Jerry. My wife and I are generally musical, so we have instruments in the house (piano, guitars, bass, drum kit), but I wouldn't consider either of us drummers.
As crashes like that add insult to injury your bike attacks you after you hit the ground-happened to me last week. WHEN BIKES ATTACK!!!!!! Heal up quick
I'm really lucky... last time I did that I was able to jump off (flats for the WIN) and land on my feet, then just roll. I got up laughing at my misadventure. My nice carbon frame and paint job has 3 war wounds now. (well, it's now the wife's bike... I bought a new Yeti SB5.5 lol)... 59 years old and no broken bones ever though :-) Have a FAST recovery!!!
Sorry about your injury and I hope your surgery was successful and you’ll be back on your bike soon. One thought, do you think you were recovered from your 40mile loop?
Glad you didn't get busted up. Thanks for the kind words. Fortunately, this was almost two years ago now and the wrist is healed. The hand doesn't work like it used to but good enough for laps! 🤘🏾
when it comes to drops i used to practice on large kerbs heels down slight manual off i hit 6ft drops with ease now it’s all mental as well over compensating used to be my problem done the exact same thing except i wedged my junk behind the seat post and wheel ass to rubber lol it’s not a nice feeling 🥴
A good reminder that if you aren't "feeling it" it's probably best to respect the trail and let it win that round. Those rollers aren't going anywhere, you can always come back more skilled and prepared.
I am interested in the injury, the sugery, and the followup. Broken thumb and wrist are the most common. Dr. Daniel Wongwarwat out of Loma Linda is definitly the go to surgeon in the area. Did my thumb, and had to cut it in half and spin it back into the right position after another orthepedic screwed it up. Good luck!
Dang...that sounds gnarly. Ha...yeah Wongwarwat was great with me. I fractured my ulna and dislocated my lunate. According to Dr. Wongwarwat, this is the worst kind of wrist injury. The surgery involved re-attaching the ligaments and tendons and putting in four pins to keep the wrist immobilized and the lunate in place. The follow-up is ongoing. I broke my wrist in August, had the pins in for 7 weeks and started therapy in November. I still only have limited mobility and strength. The recovery continues.
It seens like people only get injured when going slowly. Every time I've been injured it was whilst barely moving. High speed crashes seem to be the least injury inducing. Weird how that works.
Thanks Arturo. I'm working to keep my mental game strong. But, to tell the truth, I won't know until I'm back there again. Thanks for the encouragement!
MTB ALAN i was there ! The 24 august , ride. Miracle mile and party wave, my friends did 10 play too one of them crash ! But he got lucky we where so tire after 5 hrs riding an try 10 play at last was not a good option ! But next year we will warm up and take 10 play in short time ! I was keeping eye if i see you there ! 👻👻✈️🇲🇽now im back in Sweden , jajaja i crash last monday ! Same shit , hit a rock in my front tire shit me over the bars ! Jeje, But I was lucky only small scraches ! Take care hermano !
Ouch! This is basically what I did off one of the bridges on Skypark's Jumpline. Wasn't really paying attention, end of the day, exhausted, hungry, should've stopped riding, etc. Having surgery really shakes you back to reality on riding, doesn't it?
@@mtb_alan had surgery two weeks ago tomorrow. doing fine just recovering. i've had bad crashes and even fractured some bones (usually ribs which is a tolerable heal) but never needed surgery. laying in the hospital bed took me back to reality...always need to ride ready, prepared and maintain the bike 100%. all i can think about is how this could have easily been avoided. hope your heal goes well, dude! 👍🏽
Thanks! Glad you dug that. Yeah...it's not looking good at the moment but I'm holding out hope. If they open up, I'm just doing non-stop full-pulls on Partywave to Westridge. 😄
MTB ALAN 🤣 #sendit - how are you liking the SC carbon rims ? I’m looking at a set, but I’m a bigger dude. The fear of snapping a rim on a rock section haunts me .. hahaha 😆
I love the SC Reserves. I def tend to smash into things but I'm not exactly a big fella. That being said consider a) lifetime warranty no questions asked and b) have you seen the vid of Danny MacAskill trying to break them? 😉
MTB ALAN yeah. You & Danny have a similar build. I have a friend that runs a carbon up front and an aluminum in the rear. He’s 1/2 way there hahahahaha .. I just want to full commit!
Got it. I feel like thoughts around carbon are based on early experiences with carbon components. Maybe check into a couple local shops that sells the Reserves and ask how many warranties they've seen.
Been there done that 8 times in various scenarios from Whistler to Cairns...after 30 years of riding it's to be expected. Heal up and hit that shit faster and harder next time.
Ouch sorry man. Stopping your rear tire like that... if you consider all the outcomes, I think you put this down as a net win. Heal well and ride on brrother.
Holy Shi* Alan, I stopped the video to start writing. I hope you heal quick and right. That was nasty. That was hard to watch. I have OTB'd and tore my shoulders on separate occasions, glad you are OK, apart from you wrist. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Matt. It’s cool to hear from people who relate. I’ve also done the shoulder shimmy. 😆 Thanks for braving the crash footy. I know it’s different to watch when you’ve experienced it. Glad you dug it tho! 🤘🏽
Same injury happened to a buddy of mine from a front tire wash out. As a surgeon, he was concerned to say the least. Way to get back out there and keep shredin!!

Yeah. It was an interesting moment. I still think the butt cheek brake check played a significant role. Somebody pointed out that when Bri did it, she rolled it and was all right.
Daaamn this place looks amazing! I would love to ride there! Nasty fall though. Hope you heal up good and quick and get back out there!
Thanks! Snow Summit is good times!
Very instructive analysis. Thanks for breaking it down the BOSS approach. Feel better soon.
Glad you dug it. Hope it’s useful. Thanks!
So bummed to see it happen! But I think it's rad you analyzed what you did! Great way to make progression out of a bad scenario!
Thanks Wade. I definitely didn’t want it to turn into a fear trap. 💪🏽 Hope to get to ride 10-ply with you some time!
Sorry to see this Alan. It happens to us all at some point. You're in great spirits considering.
Thanks! Taking it day by day and staying grateful for what I got. 👍🏽
Sucks on what happen! I am struggling on a rock drop similar to this one...my elbow is swollen and scrapped up...lol...Thanks for sharing the video...I found it very helpful...Get well soon!
Dang...hope you can conquer that drop! Thanks. I'm glad you found it helpful! 🤘🏽
My man!! That was brutal to watch, but mosdef a lesson learned. Swift recovery...
Thanks 🙏🏽!
love the content buddy ...saw you last weekend ..glad you are riding again !
🙏🏾
hope you get better soon looking forward to possibly following you and learning your lines sometime
Thanks! Yeah although you may need to show me some lines by the time I get back. 😆
Dude..your awesime tips helps alot...hopefully i can apply them on trails...much appreciated...
👊🏾
my heart broken like your arm mr mtb feel best soon
Thanks for the kind words! 🤘🏽
Thanks Eric! Will do!
good that its not worst. Anyway, I thank you for sharing the analyzation of frame to frame that will be guidance for riders to learn from. Get well soon bro🤙
Thanks man. Glad you appreciated it. Will do! 🤘🏽
Super video! I applauded for CA$2.00 👏
Thanks for the support, Barbara!
So rad! these trails look like such a dream!
Can't wait for the bike park to reopen!
@@mtb_alan Looks so good, I need to cross the pond soon!
Ha...or maybe not soon. 😷😆
Always going to remember BOSS from now on, awesome analysis. Get well soon, man!
Heck yeah! Hope it helps. Thanks Anthony!
i crashed in Fernie BC on the 8-9 did the same dam thing to my left arm not as bad of injury as you. Same crash over a log. 20 hr drive back to the states to see a doc.Get better i enjoy your you tube channel
Oh man. Sorry to hear. You’re a gnarly dude to handle it for that kinna time. Glad you dig the channel! 🤘🏽
Nice that you made an analysis of your crash. New sub, great channel 🤟
Yo! Glad you dug it. Thanks for the support! 🤘🏽
Dig it! 👍🏽
Get well soon man.
Thanks Milton! 👍🏽
Smashed my shoulder on Party Wave had to get a plate put in.. can’t wait to get back out there! Heal up my dude!
Cheers to you putting this out 👏👏👏👏
Thanks Ken. It did take a bit of effort to edit this one, but I'm glad I did, and I hope I produced something of value. 🤘🏽
And definitely the mental game is key.
Thanks for the good thoughts. Healing up day by day. 💪🏽
Sorry bro ! Heal fast and stay safe
Thanks Dennis! Will do.
Should have made that rock into a drop instead of a roller 😉
100%
Wow Alan that was indeed a nasty fall.I wish I had my fall on camera but i didn't..That's very similar to my fall at Greer..glad surgery went well.I go in tomorrow for the same type of injury..rest well it's going to be awhile.
'
Dang man. Sorry to hear. I’m using the time to catch up on some of the things I tend to leave by the wayside when I’m all 💯 MTB.
Thx for sharing. My biggest fear. I wonder if Li like Bikes technique of the hip hinge would have prevented this?
@@mtb_alan Thanks so much very helpful. Appreciate it.
@@jasonupson 🤘🏾
@@mtb_alan I just shared a little about my crash if you're interested.
Sorry about your crash. Hope you heal well. And I see you're a drummer as well?
Thanks Jerry.
My wife and I are generally musical, so we have instruments in the house (piano, guitars, bass, drum kit), but I wouldn't consider either of us drummers.
As crashes like that add insult to injury your bike attacks you after you hit the ground-happened to me last week.
WHEN BIKES ATTACK!!!!!! Heal up quick
LOL! Dude my bike was mad at me. 😆
Thanks!
Hope you’re all right. 👊🏽
MTB ALAN Thanks. Fracture calcaneus and bruised everything. Hurts to walk but fine to ride-so thats good.
Get well bro. Good analysis and like the acronym. 👊🏽
Thanks! Glad you dug it. 🤘🏽
EZ on the fist bumps Alan! Great self analysis too. Looking forward to your next videos.....
Thanks Steven! Easy on the fist bumps?! Well, I definitely won’t be getting as many for next 6-8 weeks. 😆
I abide by the "Killer Instinct" rule. When I have my KI running hot, I slay the trail. When I feel it start to wane, I take a break or quit.
I like it.
Dma bro nasty fall for sure. Glad your doing better and that your ok. Definitely could have been worse. !!
Thanks! Definitely could have been worse. 👍🏽
Get well soon man! 🤙🏽
Thanks! 🤘🏽
Damn Dude I wish you a speedy recovery!!
Thanks! 💪🏽
Nice! Glad you came away unscathed. I tried reeeal huard to roll and just couldn't make it. And definitely flats ftw!
Sorry about your injury and I hope your surgery was successful and you’ll be back on your bike soon. One thought, do you think you were recovered from your 40mile loop?
Thanks! 40 mile loop? 🤔
MTB ALAN I thought you just did the San Juan Loop prior to this ride. In any event, get better soon!!!
Ha. I was working on something similar. That crash sucked. It's always my fear I'll catch my but and do just that.
Ha! Well now you know! 🤘🏽😆
Nasty one Alan ... hope you recover quickly.
Thanks! 💪🏽
I'm see you in dpov skypark video clip very nice
🤘🏽
Ugh...I did something similar. Got pitched over on a drop. Hit my butt on the rear tire and sent. I landed on my side and rolled it out.
Glad you were able to roll it out. 👊🏽
Nice job with the video. Hope you heal up soon.
Thanks Nate! Will do.
Been there..... the fall at least but not the arm. Speedy recovery. Takes guts to show the world you wreck
Thanks for sharing!
A good reminder that if you aren't "feeling it" it's probably best to respect the trail and let it win that round. Those rollers aren't going anywhere, you can always come back more skilled and prepared.
💯
Best, Outstanding, Stigmatized, Shredder!
LOL! Nice. Stigmatized eh? 🤔
Yeow, that looked all bad. To a quick recovery and better rides 🍻
Thanks Dan!
It seens like people only get injured when going slowly. Every time I've been injured it was whilst barely moving. High speed crashes seem to be the least injury inducing. Weird how that works.
Dunno. I was going fast when I separated my shoulder. Seems it less about fast v slow and more about the right speed yeah?
Heavy !!!! Hermano !! Espero ya pasaste el miedo de regresar al mismo lugar y hacerlo de nuevo ! Next step !
Heal up quick bud, we’ll miss you out there 🙏🏼
Thanks Adam! I’ll be back out there before you know it!
Make a speedy recovery!
Thanks! Will do.
Gutsy replay, and good analysis!
Thanks Michael!
Ouch! This is basically what I did off one of the bridges on Skypark's Jumpline. Wasn't really paying attention, end of the day, exhausted, hungry, should've stopped riding, etc. Having surgery really shakes you back to reality on riding, doesn't it?
Oh man. Hope you’re all right? 🤔 Dunno about being brought back to reality. I always know riding how I do it’s a possibility. 👍🏽
After the deductible is wat really sux! Glad u'll make it out of it man!
Yeah the medical bills make their own kind of impact. 😬 Thanks James! 🤘🏽
Good video! Loved the break down of BOSS.. Hopefully the California sun will eat covid this summer. I really want to ride Summit.
My goodness Alan ! I'm glad you're going to be ok. That's enough of that now, you hear ?
Ha! Thanks. No promises! 👹
Gnarly OTB, trail looks like a lot of fun tho. 🤘
Really good trail with plenty of opportunities to improve skills!
Ouch! Heal soon and take it easy. You’ll be back on the bike soon enough.
😎
Thanks Andy!
Get well soon bro
Thanks Tom!
Dude you got lucky you missed those sharp rocsk. good on ya.
You said it. Could have been a lot worse.
Been there done that 8 times in various scenarios from Whistler to Cairns...after 30 years of riding it's to be expected. Heal up and hit that shit faster and harder next time.
Yew! Thanks for the push! 🤘🏽
Get better brotha!! 👊🏼😜
Thanks David! 👊🏽
Ouch sorry man. Stopping your rear tire like that... if you consider all the outcomes, I think you put this down as a net win. Heal well and ride on brrother.
Thanks Chris. I totally agree. Could have been worse for suer.
That stinks - sorry about that! Heal up fast!
Thanks! Will do. 💪🏽
Poor guy! I'm sorry!
Thanks buddy. 🤘🏽
Damn. That full face for the save. Glad you’re relatively okay.
Thanks man.
