Jump your mountain bike by pumping. Learn the technique for perfect pumping.

- The body mechanics we all need for jumping are the same mechanics required for perfect pumping. So on a pump track you can learn to jump jump your mountain bike by pumping. Essentially learning to jump without leaving the ground. Making those first jumps safer. It's the perfect way to rewire your brain so that you naturally have the correct form as you start jumping. I head to #BigWaveDavePumptrack in Broomfield, Colorado to meet MTB coach Lee McCormack who explains it all.

Hey Tim, We started thinking up one yesterday. Thanks for the graphics brother!
No better teacher out there!
@@JoyOfBike this is how I'm learning how to jump..I figured it out on my own and it makes so much sense..this video backs that up
you guys rule. still have the mind from when mtb started. stay stoked guys.
you all probably dont care at all but does anyone know a trick to log back into an instagram account..?
I stupidly lost my login password. I would love any help you can offer me
I was a BMX racer/freestyler back in the 80s, and we just sent it. There wasn’t any kind of analysis beyond what we read in BMX Action, which were just tips to pulling the stunts. Now that I’m in my 50s and seriously on my bike(s) again, I can’t tell you how valuable this is for my confidence and sense of safety, as well as lifting my skills. Thanks guys, see you on the trails.
Yesbro!!
Me too. 46 years old ex BMXer.
I am 50 and my son 13 . We started racing the trails in the weekend in the Dutch woods for hours. He got so lucky... they are building a pump track 1 minute from our home. Thnx for the video.
" The universe has given us sine waves of love." That is a great quote! Stick that on a t-shirt. Thanks for the great videos.
After 30 years away from MTB, I’m riding again at 55 with my 19 year old son. Such great bonding time, and you both are just what I need, Alex and Lee. Thank you!
It’s the best!!!
At FIRST I did'nt UNDERSTAND it but when I WATCHED it AGAIN I realized, I dont even have a PUMPTRACK NEAR ME and that's the PROBLEM!
im 40 this year... and i really thank you for this series!
Thank you!
Right?! 👍
I agree ..this is gold..I'm 43 and riding this week I figured out that pumping good led me to jumping while I was riding because it felt natural..I'm in the beginning stages and I've ridden 7 out the last ten days..once ya get it you get🤙🤙🤙🤙
I've been working on pumping for a while now and for whatever reason I've just been sending all my weight down on the bars but not transferring that momentum to the rear wheel, except maybe by accident. Today I pivoted and it unlocked new levels of speed, flow, and the length I could maintain unbroken runs of coasting. I'm looking forward to transferring this movement to the jumps now that I've got it down.
Love your page and the content is super helpful! When asked what i would want more of its technical trail terrain skills and tips.
really good explanation ! i never saw this anywhere else as clear. my confusion of how to jump is gone. now i understand the mechanics and i have clear idea on what to practice. thanks !
Totally agree, pumping was what made me a confident jumper!
Thank you so much Alex and Lee! I have been watching all your videos and tried this hinge, row/anti-row on my last bike ride and got some air while feeling in complete control. It was a moment of pure bliss and stoke! You guys have a great teaching style, keep it up!
I love the videos you guys make. At 47 I need the messages to be kept simple! Never really played on pump tracks before, but have started going with my children. Wish I'd started 20 years ago.
Thanks guys..I learned at 43 using these videos 🤙🤙no other videos on yt tell ya to learn to pump first..I taught my friend the same technique and he did it in one day
Your positivity is infectious. 49yo rider enjoying your vids.
Loving your series!
Pumping definitely made me very good at getting both wheels off the ground, i spent a lot of time on pump tracks, but the problem is sometimes you do just need to send it to conquer your fear and make big table tops on dirt tracks and then gap jumps on trails which i can't manage yet
More great stuff Alex and Lee, thank you.
Within the last nine months, three old dirt "fun tracks" within a thirty minute drive have been renovated to become full asphalt "modern" pumptracks. With trail access still limited due to Covid, these have been a game-changer, especially with my nine year old son. He's on an 18" wheeled BMX, I'm on either my 26" rigid 4X/DJ rig, or more recently (since watching your "How to Manual over 50" video, and buying one after a 25 years hiatus) my 20" BMX. In 2021 we've ridden these a couple of times a week, and there's no question that they're making us better, fitter, stronger riders. My son is getting faster and more confident every time (and starting to generate the acceleration between features needed to clear smaller tabletops), and I'm clearing features I would previously have found intimidating. Neither of us have had so much as a scuffed knee, and we're learning progressively.
I've recently become involved in the process of having a modern pumptrack built in our town.
Since you're an advocate of the multi-bike approach, have you tried mixing up BMX and 26" at a pump track? I've found it to be a hugely beneficial. I found the initial transition from 26" to BMX really scary (fun, but scary), and felt like I had to relearn everything. Getting back on the 26" though I was much more comfortable with height and speed, and more confident in managing my weight more dynamically to generate more acceleration and launch.
Stay sane, Gary
It’s very good vídeo, I’m from Brazil and I was learned with you!
I never knew how much I didn't know about riding a bike... I'm stoked and itching to get out and start trying these techniques. You guys rock!
Glad to help!
OMG you guys are killing it. It's so clear. Thank you 🙏💕
Thank you!
Hey guys I’m 52 and I love your videos and analysis, Lee Lovebikes is genius. No one make it clear and simple to understand as you..I’m looking forward for your video how to handle the air.
Kuddos to that little girl shredding it on her scooters
Thanks for this the content in this channel! I really like your debunking of the not so useful tips in other videos. I'm only just getting into biking at 33 and the sensible, almost clinical advice is really great to see :)
Awesome, thank you!
Keep it coming, I'm an old bmxer getting back on the bike. Stoked to see older riders producing content.
Right on!!!
Wow! This is gold!
Thanks. The drills are a lot of fun. For real!
If anyone doubts that Lee rides..... at around 3:15 look at his calves. He also has a small trophy on his left knee. Found a pump track close to my house, can't wait to go do this. That's not a 'try' it's a 100% 'do' even tho I've never been to a pump track. Positive vibes......
I highly recommend lee’s book “pump up the base” for Mtb fitness and skill.
You are inspiring me to take my riding to the next next level in 2021, thank you, I’m 40 something and still (trying to) shred it!
Great time to progress!!!
Great vid! this topic is way underrated in the how to jump or how to jump better videos. I would definitely say that going to a pump track and getting used to the motion of transferring from a lip to a landing has helped me with jumping more than learning to bunny hop. Thank you for bringing this topic to more people.
Totally agree!
Hey Alex, I am really getting hooked to your videos :-) I am even starting to watch the older ones I haven't seen yet ... I'm 47, father of a seven year old, riding my bike for more than 30 years, but I still suck at some aspects of riding ... jumping being one of them. I get a lot of inspration here, thx!
Love the deep dive into the physics/psychology of jumping in easily digestible bites. Going to send the link to my riders. Now we just need that bad-ass pump track here in Madison, WI :-)
Thanks. We had a lot of fun making this and adding the graphics. Here's an idea for you. I wanted a pump track out here and put together some money and started working with some of the different cities out here. Velosolutions came out and we toured several locations and met with three municipalities. We built one. Another city we visited with built another and a third is on the way in yet another town. It's worth reaching out to Alon at Velosolutions. He can give you some ideas on how to get the excitement going in Madison. Great town!
You two are hilarious 😹 Great education and advice, even for us older riders ----> Sub’ed 😸
Pump track and pump jumps makes you a better mountain biker
Thank you, got my sub.
How come the videos are a year old? The info is great and timeless. I love the vibe you two generate. I want more
I have a SIGNED copy of Lee's book. Awesome. I would consider selling it for $10k, but no less.
I'll try that! 👍
I’d REALLY like one of those ‘Moderate speed perfect pumping’ t-shirts.
I just bought his book on amazon. Thanks
I think you’ll love it.
Love the REEB shirt! Demoed a Sqweeb in Sedona last year, it felt great. Might be my next bike. Great videos, keep em' coming.
Great bikes and a great group of guys!!!
Miss ya man, please do more content come back to us!
I’m 58 almost 59, I got into Mtb 2 years ago, there are no pump tracks around me and the closest trails are about 30 minutes, we don’t really have any elevation in southern Louisiana. I used to ride bmx freestyle but that was 40 years ago. I used to ride Mx and could jump anything. Now I’m all beat up and trying to relearn stuff from my youth. One of the Mtb clubs is trying to get trails and pump track built at a state park but it might be next year before that’s a reality
I neeeeed a Moderate Speed Perfect Pumping T Shirt!
I am fired up to go to the pump track now.
I really love these asphalt ones in the winter when everything else out her is covered in snow they melt faster and ride well even when they are wet.
Cool! More more more pump track tips & trick please! There's a pump track being built about half an hour from my house. That will be finished in a couple of months. Can't wait to try that, so exited!
You're gonna love it!!
@@JoyOfBike I have to write this off me (do you even say it like that in English?): I just rode the new pumptrack for the first time! Big smile all the way back home. I'm starting my working day now: nothing can harm me today :) So much fun! You weren't kidding. I must say it was quite intimidating, didn't expect that. I went early (like I always do) but this time also to avoid the scooter kids and the hardcore bmx guys. I made it around without pedalling on the first go, but I had to laugh how awkward that felt. Having said so, after 1 hour I could find some speed, even had to brake in the corners or I would fly out of it, and started to see the lines you can take. I love jumping (but I'm shit at it) but that is going to take some practice. I did jump, got launched actually, but I can't even speak about casing the jump. My front wheel never got close to making it. Afraid to go OTB on the lip at the landing. But anyways, this was my first go. Can't wait to go back. Hope to squeeze in another go the day after tomorrow. Keep those pumptrack vids coming, thanks Alex and Lee! (btw, got your mtb book for Fathersday, Lee :) maybe the missus and kids thought I'd need it after my second big(ger) crash)
Damn, I wish I lived near one of those velosolutions tracks, they all look awesome.
The tarmac ones are very sweet, but see if you can fine bike parks with dirt pump tracks! Those work just as well, and give *slightly* softer landing should you case a jump (or, heavens forbid, crash).
MTB for life man!
That’s the dream
Awesome Alex 👍
Thanks brother

You are the inspiration Alex 🙂
You're right, I can jump quite high and my bike has no suspension at all and weighs about 19 kilos and I don't understand why when I fall I have no stability, I ONLY DRIVEN about 73 hours of driving, I am new to it.
7:35 yes, I start doing that.
Ha, ha, did you catch the girl at 04:05? That was fantastic... Lol... "Get good at pumping," Alex...

I’m 47, my buddies all catch bad ass air, I haven’t. We going to skypark this weekend and I plan on using these same moves. Wish me luck
You got this!!
Thx for the great video Alex, I'm a big fan of Lee's teachings.
His instructional language and technique are so very different to everyone else who emphasise the timing of the precompression and the hop.
Curious to understand whether there are any differences encouraged when riding steep lips or seeking to clear jumps with less speed through greater height off the lip.
Also keen to hear some comment in the future on how this technique reduces the opportunity for steep lips to throw you forward over the bars if you get your precompression and hop timing off by 1 second, 2 seconds etc
When the snow clears we will do a jump 101 vid. Lee does have a very different and safer way to teach jumping. I don’t use it exactly but I’d like to capture it for people. For an advanced jump technique check the vids i did with Christian Peper. Huge ups.
Hi guys awesome vids I can't stop watching them, would all of this apply to an Ebike, Imagine it would but obviously a lot harder due to the extra weight. Im a young (in mind anyway) 59 year old with an Ebike (proper mountain bike but with a motor) but chicken when it comes to jumping. I would dearly love to jump but just don't have the korunas, they are actually in my wifes purse. Im going to practice my hops now lol We don't have those awesome facilities here in NZ at least not close to where I live so have to improvise somehow.
Thanks again for the vids I better get back to work now haha
I have an ebike and this hoping an ebike has come up. Maybe we make a short vid. We can make one on jumping an ebike too. Which comes with a fresh set of complications.
Lees got same gloves as I do, still cant do his fluent thingys 😁
I would so try that if I had a pumptrack like this near me. But I know a dude jumped at my local Parkitect modular Pumptrack, I haven't managed to that yet.
Johannes Nilsen These tracks are super fun. Hope you get a chance to ride one!
@@JoyOfBike i know there are some atleast one in Norway further up the map. I forgot where. But it's on trailforks. That spot has theo of them one small and one big at same spot. But I will continue to practice on my local track, even in winter subzero temps. ❄️So can be icy. I have studded tyres on.
Dig your channel dude...love the heady deets n tails. For me, the physics, geometry, math, all the higher Ed explanations make it so I’m more willing to trust the process. My kid’s gonna tease me tho when I roll up to a jump, suddenly stop, and bust out my protractor! All worth it if I can manual before him #manualmachine 😂 After I lean to manual loops around him I’ll pass it to him so he and his bike shop peeps can use it (or demo it in their Palo Alto shop)!
I’ll send you a Brotractor so he gives your respect!!!

very nice, however there are no pumptracks in my country as far as i know
What country is that?
Why is Lee rowing his bars towards his chest on take-off, whereas Christian Pepper, in your other jump video, is extending his arms on take-off please?
At 1:04 some kung-fu intro haha...by the way a video with excellent content and very very informative ...

A pump track is something used for bmx tricks and to practice for mountain biking trails , to work out all your skills and stuff
The pre ride piss... design classic

You guys are funny. Gotta up your editing tho. Full of gems. Good riding advice. Lee is just fucking pumped man. Hoorah and shit.
Thanks Michel!!!
How to pump video would be nice
On the list for sure.
I’ve always heard I shouldn’t pull up on the bars when I jump. I don’t think you’re saying I should, but I’m a little confused. Any way you can clear it up for me?
Correct. I’ll try. The row is a pull of the bars toward you but not up. The row and anti row of the pumptrack are the same motion that you do in a jump. Take a look at their pumptrack video. There is a more on this motion and you can see how it’s the same on a roller as a jump.
@@JoyOfBike so a jump is just a roller, except there’s no ground underneath. I think you guys even say that in the video.
“Moderate speed, perfect pumping.” 🤣
I will buy it and I will wear it like a badge amd with pride.
NOOOOOO!!! They’re ‘out of stock.’ 😭
Joy of Bike with Alex Bogusky - Please make more!
Hi, I really enjoy your videos - but this one goes to fast. It would be cool if you would have spent a minute or two more on the pumping motion, timing, details etc 😊 thanks
Noted!
Anyone confirm if this track is open?
It has been closed as they work in the park around it. Haven’t heard any news about a reopening. Valmont will probably be ready before this reopens.
Really? I'm gonna try this
Love the bike design ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L and functionality. It is hard to align the front tired to center the disk brakes. The brake wheel touches the stationery side of the brake caliper and pad. I aired the tire up to 40 psi as the markings say 40-60psi. Left the house for a few hours and came back to an exploded innertube. All in all it seems to be a good bike. Have not ridden it yet though so that's the max of my knowledge. Update, put a new innertube made sure the tire was set properly and it did the same thing in under 20 minutes as second pic shows.
is it safe to jump on a quick release wheele ?
as long they are clamped in, not loose, the QR only holds the wheel from dropping out of the drops, there is an axle that takes the weight, not the QR.. through axles make the wheels stiffer, my older QR bikes would rub on the brakes, discs or pads, while cornering.. not with through alxes..
Yes.
1:33 Haha! Thanks for the responsible video editing 😅
I'd love to get a "row/anti-row" video on how to do drops (with our without Lee).
Good idea. Drops are my least favorite thing. Estimating speed on big ones is scary! The big drop on Dirt Merchant was so knarly for me, Start with small ones and work up to larger?
@@JoyOfBike Yeah, drops are my scariest thing as well. I'd be happy if I could do like 2-3' drops comfortably, no need to get to the 10'+ ones for me.
@@robinwalker5830 Okay I think we can explain how to do those so that you are super confident and safe. We can start with the ones you can roll and move to include the ones you have to air off.
I just reviewed what is out there. A lot of opinions and styles. Kyle Wagoner has a very good one. But I don't like to go off with straight arms. Rich Drew does something with his chest and arms I wanted to see in Kyle's approach but he's mostly dealing with rollable drops. As the drops get bigger he gets a bit less aggressive with the arms. My approach is a bit in between theses two. Where do these videos leave question in your mind? I want to be additive.
@@JoyOfBike I think I've watched all the drop videos out there, Kyles, Rich Drew, Jeff Lenowsky, and more, and I'm still scared and only like 50% at keeping my front wheel from diving, which doesn't give me enough confidence to go bigger. I keep hoping for a magic video that will make it click more. Different schools of thought make it confusing: manual off, little bunny hop off, 1-2-3 push down, don't do much if you're going fast enough, etc. I may just need in-person coaching and more reps.
Just taught myself how to jump at the pump track, yeeehaaa!! Doubles...what!?!?
Wonderful!!!
So yeah, maybe if you live next to one of the few places in the world that has a fancy paved pump track.
They're getting more common. Advocate for one in your area.
@@cherylcook1942 Ours are dirt. Why paved anyway? The track is only going to be full of little kids of Walmart bikes loitering around at a complete standstill. No need to go that fast. You need time to go around them.
You gotta pump before you jump
Alex. Been watching your videos and pump tracking and jumping every other day. I'm way better BUT what I want to visually see is, where is the FORCE? And how much and when. Like on a scale of 1-5. Maybe on 2 different types of takeoffs. That is your next video. Should you decide to accept it.
I assume you mean when jumping pump track rollers? Very good idea. Jumping rollers is different because you have to imagine and create the takeoff point.
Just scraps of info here, but it looks like you had fun. Been riden pumptracks for a year and yes it's a good step but there's more to it and you just skipped over it. Why?
Glad you're enjoying some pump tracks!! More to pump tracks or more to jumping rollers?
there is a common misconcept here; I got trapped into it in the past, so I can understand it well, common sense is misleading in this case; when tires carry the load of a bike, a bike NEVER EVER rotates around the bottom bracket; a rotation axis can be either rear or front axle; in case of visual example it is the rear axle not BB
the same model applies to front wheel lift at wheelie or manual, in spite of the "feeling" the bike rotates around BB or pegs line in case of a motor bike
I lived quite a while assuming BB/pegs rotation, but I was wrong then
Thanks for writing this rather important correction
Why have blur circles when you can have censor helmets!
