Some of the textures look better but others seem to sand down some of the roughness that was clearly meant to be there, I'm not sure how I feel about it.
Yeah that's just the AI look. The AI doesn't know whether the gritty look on a texture us untentional or just microblocking/ film grain from being low res. Personally I do think in general it looks a lot better. The edges have been cleaned up a lot more and in motion you'll notice that a lot more than some slight texture grit. Plus some of the old texture the edging looked kinda poor so it really does at least bring up the quality to the same as any other remaster.
Personally, I feel like a lot of the textures actually lose their "texture" if that makes sense. Like for example, a lot of the stone textures don't really seem rough or bumpy anymore. But instead, a lot of things seem super smoothed out.
I kind of agree. In most of the shots shown, It's a clear improvement. However in a few instances, mostly large concrete structures, some of the more subtle detail is removed by smoothing out the texture and the material loses some of it's...texture. I'm not really sure how it's supposed to be upscaled to retain that because of how blurry it is and how it's unclear exactly what that detail is supposed to look like but yeah. It kind of is what it is. Without the comparison though I doubt anyone will notice.
I feel like this will help Birth By Sleep more than KH1 and 2. They were more stylized, with a chosen look. Where as BBS had a ton of low res textures becuase it was originally on a handheld console, and then when it was brought to console it was just given a resolution bump, but never corrected some of the frankly shitty looking textures. This will hopefully correct them there.
That was my main thought when this was announced. I always noticed the low textures on the walls and floors and stuff. Especially when they have designs on them.
It’s for all of the Non Unreal Engine games. So all of them except for 2.8 and 3… however they claim that Dream Drop did not receive it, but I’ve seen a few comparison videos of people showing clear as day that they were changed. So it’s obviously a miscommunication with whoever is doing the writing for the Steam page.
I think the fan upscale project mod done for the Epic Games version looked better than this. Hopefully epic games mods can be used for the steam version
the AI textures lose too much detail on certain areas and aren't consistent. I absolutely see a reason for people to make a mod that reverts the change.
Hoping the steam releases will encourage more mods to be made or made more quickly. The randomizer is one of my favorites and would love to play the Nobody may cry mod
I work on 3D models right. You can tell the AI (which im okay with for higher resolution, since i use it myself) hasnt been touched afterwards. AI does not mean its going to always look great. Examples, the bricks dont have much depth, the stars look wonky and the crown in AnW couldve been fixed to look straight. You have to go back a touch things up yourself. Its just lazy man
Nope, in fact the settings haven't been changed a bit, which is especially bad, because the update also added DX11 support and you can't toggle that either.
I think whatever AI model they used was way too strong with noise reduction. Just like you pointed out with world images many of the new textures look too smooth and worse now.
So about that... the creator of Nobody May Cry has stated that he will only start working on a PC port of the mod (if at all) is when he finishes the ps2 emulator version. And the latest playable version was 0.20...
@@Saxjonthe emulator version needs a super computer. My pcsx2 version of kh2 went from a smooth 60 fps to 2 fps because of the mod. I was so devastated I couldnt play it seems like it’s probably not gonna end up on pc port i just kinda feel like its not
I don't mind the use of AI for such tasks, but the finished work does need to be properly assessed. Not just to make sure that it's came out as intended, but also whether the intended result is even an improvement! Like the shot in KH2, in hollow bastion(?), the upscaling on the floor textures, in my opinion, took away from the feel. The floor was just too smooth, it made more sense for it to have that somewhat rough look to it. Unfortunately, until developers catch on that what AI (at least currently) is able to produce, still need to be checked by part of the creative development team, there's going to be these elements which detract from the style
Square Enix knew how to do that with the use of AI upscaling for SaGa Frontier HD and Legend of Mana HD. AI Upscaling but with substantial manual touches and fixes so the final image comes out well. They are literally regressing on that aspect. It screams of just giving the job to some third-party studio without any actual Square employee taking a substantial look at the result
I'm a little mixed as I think some of this instances look a fair amount worse despite being more clear, but I'm willing to take it of it means I finally get Kingdom Hearts on the go the way I've always wished.
Some of them look like their gainy texture, which I think added to the look, got smoothed away, but generally it looks good; especially at normal distance it's just going to look sharper. But at least in these close ups sometimes you can REALLY tell it was AI upscaled. I've gotten a pretty good upscaling model that I love to use on images and I'd be curious if it'd fair better, which is why I hope the original textures can be preserved, so that better models can further update them later.
3:28 it’s actually kind of interesting, that brown leaf that has the improved texture actually has only part of the leaf getting the improved texture, the rest of the leaf getting just a original texture
Sorry, but I dont want 30gb of space taken for textures, that is awful. 1:40 this is a joke right, how does this stuff make 30+gb? i'm creating higher quality textures that take less space. This is just some lazy ai upscaling without any real human looking over it and optimizing it, shame.
Once installed it takes about 71.87gb in total which of I remember right before it was about 63gb so it takes 10ish extra gb the reason the update is so large is because it’s downloading every texture again and then replaces them and removes the old ones.
I'd like to just choose the old textures. You don't see the difference in motions, and these are nothing I would stop for and look at, like I do in Wayfinder. In Wayfinder I have more time in looking at the environment and textures, than playing the actual game.
fuck, did they give this to James Cameron to up-res? all the detail gone - SMOOTH SMOOTH SMOOTH - absolutely, yes, the wood and the stone on this building should look like the same material
I think having AI do work like this that can be super tedious is a good thing because it means those resources would only have to check the work which is way shorter than having to do it themselves allowing for faster finishes and gets rid of boring and redundant work and can push people into doing more important things faster. It doesnt look bad so I think its fine
that top part of the leaves actually ARE upscaled, if you look closely you can tell. what actually happened is that the AI interpreted the original texture as just being blurry or transparent instead of being able to use context to determine it should look the same as the other leaves. one of the many limitations of unedited AI use for things like this
I am that type of guy that zooms in on every texture on any game I played. As soon as I booted the game, without zooming out, my fucking jaw dropped on how sharper everything looked. I love this. Bro aladdin looks so fucking sharp fr
Its unfortunate that most textures actually seem to have lost a lot of detwil, even though they may be technically higher resolution now. The upscaling just smooths over any fine pixel detail that was there in a lot of the old textures.
The problem is you can clearly tell they gave up a quarter of the way in cuz NO way those Twilight Town crystals weren't touched up by a human And that's the issue, I could forgive the upscaling, but there's so many horrible results in this, why could they not take some of their free time to at LEAST tweak the most glaring ones? (Sid looks horrible, the text is barely readable in some, the complex architecture is now a smudgy mess, etc.) Very disappointed, and I will definitely be giving this collection a negative review unless they tweak many of these in patches, cuz PC players are now stuck with these textures right out the gate
It is interesting that the game files on Steam are identical to Epic Store version (sans some folder name changes), so either they updated the Epic store version (doubtful; it still has the old launcher that's slightly different to steam version), or they decided against shipping the ai slop at the last minute
honestly i was rlly worried abt squenix using AI but if the thing they use it for is stuff like this and lip-sync is good, i dont want it affecting job badly
I don't think they would ever have done this if not for AI. A human would have to re-paint everything from scratch and its just easier to remake the game at that point.
OK but sometimes the AI upscale kinda looks... worse? It removes some texture a bit aggressively. Like the concrete in Radiant Gardens looks TOO flat now.
Personally I feel like background details *should* have a level of roughness and blurriness to them. It helps them blend together into "background noise" instead of popping off, drawing your attention from things that actually should have attention. I mean, just think about normal human eyesight. The thing you're looking at is sharp, but stuff further away or in your peripheral vision kinda fall out of your focus, becoming "Background noise"

I don’t mind the AI upscaled textures being done for a majority of cases (like NPCs, buildings, etc.) but a lot of cases, especially with text, they need to redraw those textures to be properly upscaled; like on 2:00 for the food menu or maybe even the Mailbox for KH1. Because it just looks wrong on so many levels if you pay attention to it for more than 5 seconds. I'm pretty sure the lines above Dewey's eyes are the contours just above his brow ridge. Look at the picture of Donald Duck on khwiki for reference: Both of his brows stick out in front of the belt on his hat. I'm just about certain the artist was using these lines to give it some depth for a low polygon model and not to give him eyebrow hair. The AI using such a dark color markedly worsens the design here IMO.
Yeah, I know what you mean about the "AI look". I use Nvidia's upscaler for RUclips videos and sometimes a program called lossless scaling for higher frame rates. They do add a hazy almost paint like look to things as the AI doesn't really understand edges and sometimes it will smear out fine textures as they look a lot like micro blocking or film grain which it's supposed to clear up. Still in general I do prefer a sharper image to a raw but dirty image. These upscaling features really are a big deal for the modern 4K era as 4K really brings out the imperfections in textures.
Will the KH3 Multiplayer Mod and other Mods that previously worked with the EGS version of KH3 and other mods for KH3 from NM work with the Steam version of KH3 and on Steam Deck as well too ?
ive mostly been playing ddd, for the most part everything does jsut feel a bit crisped. I think given some time no ones going to notice (outside of those kh2 world icons those are pretty chewed up), but this is no persona 3 portable situation. but i wouldnt be shocked if everyone goes out and gets a mod to put it back. or even jsut the world icons, that'd be kinda funny.
I'll take it, unrelated but I installed a mod that AI upscales the textures for SA2. The AI actually made sonic adventure 2 look a lot better, something that can never be said for Nintendo's "attempt" of AI upscaling when they lied about upscaling the HUD for Mario 64.
I don’t mind most of these, but there are some weird changes. I don’t like how the leaves look with the clearer lines (disregarding how some didn’t get upscaled). The rest is fine and I don’t mind them
I was playing the game last night and I am on the rupunzel stage and I thought it looked different…especially the wooded area…it looked like a movie kind of
The bundle for all games seems really juicy rn. I don't care for KH3 as it doesn't have FF characters but seems like it's literally cheaper to buy all 3 collections in a bundle than the first 2 collections separately. I've never played KH games and I'm only interested due to FF ties. Should I get the whole thing?
Short answer: yes. Long answer: they are great games in their own right, and unlike FF it's one story. Skipping KH3 would be like skipping CD3 on FF7. You'll want to know what happens with the characters. Logical answer: if you're already getting what you want for cheaper, why would also getting extra stuff on top be a bad thing?
I personally are not fussed on the HD remakes mainly because most of the heartless colour changes make them look cheap or something a kid would colour which takes away from the art style if you get what I mean. Plus some of the texture have lost their character which is sad really but not everything is bad some things needed it but others should have been left alone.
of the things that ai does wrong i'm fine with ai upscaling cause i don't think it's reasonable to force the artists to redraw every texture for a 20+ year old game which would cause crunch which i some what applaud them for.
I am a little mixed on how I feel about this. Some looks alright or even pretty good. But some just seemed unneeded. Like I’m not too hung up on it since while playing the game I doubt I’ll notice it much. But at the same time I do like that old feel the games have.
I'm not even sure if this is AI at all, or just a simple old Image Upscaler. Mainly because I feel like someone just boosted up the Sharpness and Contrast sliders on every texture and that's it. The compression artifacts that some original textures have, are now kept and amplified, and the intentional grainy looks are now smoothed out. I rather have this than nothing, since the game looks cleaner on first sight. But it sadly looks like a quick, careless job to me.
I heard the PS3 collections have better texture quality than the PS4 versions. So perhaps they’re finally using the old textures they had, maybe used ai on those in particular.
I think we should be careful with throwing around "AI Upscaling", or at least be more clear what's mean when using the term since there's a lot of drama around anything remotely AI at the moment. "AI Upscalers" have existed long before the current wave of AI stuff has been prominent, like Waifu2x. They're not AI tools in the neural network/generative type sense, they just use algorithms to upscale stuff. So calling it "AI Upscaled Textures" will make a lot of people who don't know better jump to the conclusion that it's a Stable Diffusion generative type thing. Regardless of how good or bad the quality is, I don't think it's a good idea to contribute to potential misinformation especially around something so incendiary.
This may be the 300th time we're buying these games, but at least it can finally be the last time. So glad I decided to build a PC instead of getting a ps5..
I think I prefer the old textures tbh. I think it's nice that they did this, but it looks like some of the textures have lost some detail and the crunchyness of the old textures have some charm to them
At 2:56 you show those leaves, those are definitely AI artifacts. They are absolutely using generative AI. It is definitely "sharper" but it's smore smeary as well. Some of the detail is scrubbed away.
I don't know how I feel about it yet. Sharpest textures doesn't mean better graphics or style. In the past versions they probably used lower res on some textures not just for optimization, but also to make the eye not focus so much in the background and more on the characters, the special effects and the action. If everything is smooth nothing pops up and the texture of the textures is lost. We'll see how this goes...
Ai restoration feels lazy to me, I know it takes a lot of time to process then inspect and maybe correct. But AI doesnt know what the design team had in mind all they way back then. And there was nothing wrong with the old graphics overall. Anyways, I just hope the game is fun and performs well.
Every Steam Game ist playable with every controller, since it just emulates a supported controller if yours is not. So yes, it is playable with a switch pro controller. You might have XBOX Button layouts tho.
Playing kh2 final mix on steamdeck. I like the new textures. In portable mode, it really feels like the game wasnt made on ps2 at all. I personally like the changes.
The Radiant Gardens restoration committee has been working hard to restore all the of KH graphics to 4k.

Will the KH3 Multiplayer Mod and other Mods that previously worked with
the EGS version of KH3 and other mods for KH3 from NM work with the Steam
version of KH3 and on Steam Deck as well too ?
is this texture update exclusive to PC or coming to console as well? I'm still PS4/PS5 but plan to get PC copies for modding
ive mostly been playing ddd, for the most part everything does jsut feel a bit crisped. I think given some time no ones going to notice (outside of those kh2 world icons those are pretty chewed up), but this is no persona 3 portable situation.
but i wouldnt be shocked if everyone goes out and gets a mod to put it back. or even jsut the world icons, that'd be kinda funny.
Some of the textures lose their rough appearnce, but I honestly don't mind that seeing how crisp many of the changes make other textures.
1:42 I should call her
I'll take it, unrelated but I installed a mod that AI upscales the textures for SA2. The AI actually made sonic adventure 2 look a lot better, something that can never be said for Nintendo's "attempt" of AI upscaling when they lied about upscaling the HUD for Mario 64.
Shadows seem to change drastically between old and new
So this up scaling is only for the steam version right?
I don’t mind most of these, but there are some weird changes. I don’t like how the leaves look with the clearer lines (disregarding how some didn’t get upscaled). The rest is fine and I don’t mind them
I was playing the game last night and I am on the rupunzel stage and I thought it looked different…especially the wooded area…it looked like a movie kind of
honestly I'm more surprised there's no mod to give kh1 the textures/ models from later games.
Kh3 is worth it just for the dlc alone
What engine did first two games ran at
of the things that ai does wrong i'm fine with ai upscaling cause i don't think it's reasonable to force the artists to redraw every texture for a 20+ year old game which would cause crunch which i some what applaud them for.
Oh boy cant wait for tiulink to make new 4k textures mod with hud elements etc😁
I am a little mixed on how I feel about this. Some looks alright or even pretty good. But some just seemed unneeded. Like I’m not too hung up on it since while playing the game I doubt I’ll notice it much. But at the same time I do like that old feel the games have.
What are the EGS versions? I'm assuming PS4/PS5?
Are these updates for PlayStation and others as well?
Any way of getting hdr on kh3 ?
How do the new Steam versions fair performance wise, as in FPS etc?
I'm not even sure if this is AI at all, or just a simple old Image Upscaler.
Mainly because I feel like someone just boosted up the Sharpness and Contrast sliders on every texture and that's it.
The compression artifacts that some original textures have, are now kept and amplified, and the intentional grainy looks are now smoothed out.
I rather have this than nothing, since the game looks cleaner on first sight. But it sadly looks like a quick, careless job to me.
Hopefully now that the steam release is here in like 2 hours. Maybe we'll get a Missing link release date soon 💀
I heard the PS3 collections have better texture quality than the PS4 versions. So perhaps they’re finally using the old textures they had, maybe used ai on those in particular.
They really should fix the mouth animation in non-cinematic cutscenes
I think we should be careful with throwing around "AI Upscaling", or at least be more clear what's mean when using the term since there's a lot of drama around anything remotely AI at the moment.
"AI Upscalers" have existed long before the current wave of AI stuff has been prominent, like Waifu2x. They're not AI tools in the neural network/generative type sense, they just use algorithms to upscale stuff. So calling it "AI Upscaled Textures" will make a lot of people who don't know better jump to the conclusion that it's a Stable Diffusion generative type thing. Regardless of how good or bad the quality is, I don't think it's a good idea to contribute to potential misinformation especially around something so incendiary.
if you already have them on epic store, is it worth the price?
The real question is: did they get rid of the "online" requirement and fix the crashes?
This may be the 300th time we're buying these games, but at least it can finally be the last time. So glad I decided to build a PC instead of getting a ps5..
I think I prefer the old textures tbh. I think it's nice that they did this, but it looks like some of the textures have lost some detail and the crunchyness of the old textures have some charm to them
you should do a comparison between the new version and the mod that enhances the graphics.
Why didn't they allow pre-ording the game early?!??
KH2 in particular always had a very painted look so for me the smoother look works much better.
At 2:56 you show those leaves, those are definitely AI artifacts. They are absolutely using generative AI. It is definitely "sharper" but it's smore smeary as well. Some of the detail is scrubbed away.
Can't fans just throw all the textures through AI upscaling themselves and make updates to each one and make them perfect?!
anyone else having issues with the esg version after the update?
I play refixed and with the HD texture pack off of Nexus mods so this ain't much but it's cool that the best game ever is getting some more love
QUICK QUESTION. Is the steam port of KH playable with a switch pro controller?
Every Steam Game ist playable with every controller, since it just emulates a supported controller if yours is not. So yes, it is playable with a switch pro controller. You might have XBOX Button layouts tho.
@@No.Name-Y-T either way 👀
I haven’t played any of the KH series games in so long so I likely won’t notice.
you can map any controller yes
Playing kh2 final mix on steamdeck. I like the new textures. In portable mode, it really feels like the game wasnt made on ps2 at all. I personally like the changes.
I think it meant to say same graphics but textures improved
I just wonder if the crashing has stoped and is more stable
Only areas I noticed that looked "better" is STT and SP for KH2. But AMD GPU users are running a lot better than before.
That Duey IS cursed, man.. Duey but he's the IMPOSSIBRU meme
Soooooo....now that the older Kh games are on steam, now would be a good time for some mods and revamps (looking at Kh 358/2days and recoded👀)
Any plans to play the new Life is Strange game called Double exposure? It comes out in October.
anyone here in america and have the update yet? I opened epic and fortnite started updating but not kingdom hearts
