I feel like how you worded it helped better explain why I was a little perturbed by this mv. I felt like they weren’t treating the topic with the seriousness it needed and made it a quirky thing but how you explained it as it not showing the members being negatively affected by mental illness explained why I felt like it was being used as an aesthetic and not a serious representation. I think if the mv authentically showed the struggles of mental illness it would be better and it would help reduce stigma. But using it as an mv concept without addressing mental health authentically gives off the vibe that the mv is romanticizing mental illness.
Edit: I was just thinking, it’s a huge missed opportunity that they didn’t address mental health in a serious way with the theme of the relationship between fans and idols. We know how being in the public eye and receiving hate can affect idols’ mental health, I think showing something more real in the mv would drive the point home about how badly hate can affect idols. It would be better than the after credits scene at least.

Ditto is an incredible music video that hits close to home. One thing i like about creative production is that you can interpret the stories in many different ways. That 6th girl formed an unhealthy obsession with new jeans, so much so she can't focus on herself and thinks they are with her. When she is with that boy, she finally lets go of the figments of imagination. She finally is kicked to reality. This can apply to many kpop Stans who resort to kpop for comfort but in doing so, they lose themselves. This can resort to anyone going through loneliness. Did y'all know, when i was lonely (still am), i hugged the clothes in my closet for comfort? Ya, loneliness can hurt and new jeans does a great job in describing the heart throbbing feelings of youth as well as heart wrecking ones.

As a therapist I was very uncomfortable with the depiction of mental illness in the music video. Romanticising mental illness has been an issue in western music, but this is one of the first instances in kpop (the only other that comes to mind is Maria by Hwasa with her in the straight jacket, but that's not bad).
The fact they are implying someone who has opposing opinion to the New Jeans team is mentally unstable is bad enough as is, but also "yes I'm in love so I am insane look how cute" are both so bad

As for mentioning Hwasa, I didn't mention her as hate or anything. She's a very talented singer. I only mentioned her cause that's the only other instance I know of within kpop that mental health was in any way shown in a MV.
Anyway, no need to get defensive. I just gave my opinion and thoughts on the opinion and thoughts worded in this video. There's nothing wrong with that

However, their COMPANY should do better. I'll gladly talk about any company that is portraying mental illness as a quirky personality trait and how problematic it is to do so. I agree for the most part, but I'm not quite sure if I'm with you on "they are comparing mental illness with falling in love". Sure, the lyrics mention falling in love, but everything else about the MV points to them having an identity crisis for being an idol (making them crazy and delusional). I genuinely believe that's what this is all about. The director even mentions this in an interview.
But nonetheless, most of what you said still stands. I can see how the MV can become a little too insensitive for some people, and I totally understand that. But being quirky with this concept isn't even that bad of an idea. I think it can be done, and it even fits the "brightness" (lack of a better term) of being an idol. But them dancing as psych ward patients?? Yeah maybe a little too much. I think if they just changed a few things here and there, this MV would've been a banger. (It still is, but not for some people)

The end was what made a lot of people uncomfortable:
The people fail to see that the members are themselves in the hospital, where they are all suffering from the same problem of forcing to be someone else or matching the expectations of others. She came to take her there because Netizen are the one who are forcing them or want them to behave a certain way.
In the MV you can see the real doctor also for a moment is shown as a patient where he see himself in other profession. May be by coming with minji she can see that she is also put in the same societal standard as others. In short they are not so different and should come and see the other side also.
And it's mainly talking about idols metal health. They just pointed out most common thing an idol go through mentally.
Whenever I see people saying it's not an honest representation, what do you want them to do tie them to a chair and show them getting shocks? The director just picked 1 of the problem and tried to show the best he could in a 6 min video, as an Mv has a wider audience and they have to cater to both the audience and the fans. I am not a big fan of NJ, but it's says a lot about an mv when bot gen pop and the fans can relate to the mv

It’s like not only did they make mental health and psych wards an aesthetic, but they specifically used *psychosis*. One of the most misunderstood and stereotyped mental health conditions by the general public. Psychosis is NOT quirky. It’s real, and it’s serious, and the people who have experienced this condition deserve better. So sorry, but this MV goes in the exact same category of media that portrays people with schizophrenia as violent killers.

I think OMG video would have been more suitable for any other song, like if they were talking about their struggles or whatnot cuz these "illnesses" were very relatable for idols, like,
Hanni: Becoming a robot, only existing for the fans' pleasure
    Hyein: Celebrity disease
Haerin: Losing yourself trying to fit into what others see you as
Minji: Trying to be the 'leader' and helping them out when she herself has problems
Danielle: The cameras are always watching, so a kind of paranoia .
OMG was not the kind of song suited for THIS mv. Its like tamping their very real struggles down into some 'cool aesthetic'

I watched Bibi's Animal Farm Music video. It's very gruesome and it's expected not everyone will love it. The song is way more chill than the MV but I was still amazed how she pulled it off. I honeslty see it as an art. Maybe that's why I wasn't too bothered by OMG MV but as a person who is also struggling mentally, anything related to mental health shouldn't be taken lightly. I actually felt a little bit off by the choreo part where they are dancing in their white robes. It's basically portraying some of mentally ill people in the mental hospital. That's the only thing that bothered me.
