Spilled A Drink Now Buttons Won’t Work? How to Clean Sticky Car Buttons

- My daughter dumped a coffee on the center console of her 2016 Mazda CX-5. Now none of the buttons or touch screen will work. Watch how a little glass cleaner and compressed air does the trick.

Thank you! Worked perfectly on my wife’s 2014 Chevy equinox. 90% of the buttons were stuck but not anymore. Didn’t need to compress air either, just let the foam soak. Update…I ended up having to repeat the process days later and use compressed air. After the first attempt once everything dried it was stuck again, the air blew out all the sticky stuff while it’s wet. Thanks again!!
I just tried this after having stuck buttons for over 2 years. It worked like a charm! I could actually see the spilt coffee bubbling up from the sides of the buttons. Thanks so much! I'm 73 years old and did it myself after being told by a shop that they would not address the issue for me.
Great to hear!
Great video dude and thank you!!! Quick tip From an auto detailer I went too: foaming glass cleaner also removes surface scuffs. Like when someone bumps your car and it just scuffs the top coat. Those scuffs thank don't come off with just washing the car!!😃
My dude goat
Watched this video months ago when the problem started. Finally got around to applying it on my lunch break today. Worked like a charm.
Thanks for posting. This worked like a charm and saved me hundreds of dollars going to Mazda paying them to pull it apart and clean it.
Dude!! This worked amazing for me. I just bought a CX-5 and the back button was completely stuck. I did one round and it was good as new. Thanks!
Thank you so much!!! Your method was the easiest I saw. I have been trying to clean mine by putting alcohol on a thin card and working it back and forth but that no longer works. I was afraid if I sprayed anything on it I would screw up the electric parts under there but you did it and it WORKED. HOORAY
Completely agree with the cup holder placement to console - thank you!!! doing this tomorrow
My dealer wanted me to pay $541 for one sticky button they noticed during an oil change. I was line yea no I'll look into other options first. This is great ty!
Bro I'm sorry I'm still laughing because you said rockalocka lol
I tried it with a lysol wipes and blew it with a straw and it worked. Thank You
Dawn power wash worked for me using the same method. THANKS!
Super helpful! Spilled pancake syrup on my brand new RAV4 console area (don't ask - _-) and I've been upset for a whole week thinking I'd already broken something. My buttons aren't sticky anymore thanks to your video!
Glad it helped. With four kids this tends to happen a lot. Maple syrup huh? :)
fake maple syrup is my problem whoopsie thx
Right! Shame on Mazda!
I only spilled only a little of my flavored coffee... a "dollop" popped out of the sip-hole and now my console is stuck! Been trying WD-40 Contact Cleaner to no avail! I'll have to try the foaming glass cleaner.
**UPDATE**
Foaming glass cleaner worked like a charm!
God bless you.. thought i had to replace the whole console!!!
My wife spilled gravy...... Yes gravy on the buttons. Did this trick and worked very well. Just used generic glass cleaner. And 120psi air.
I won't even ask about the gravy:) Glad it worked!
My 17 yo did that with a strawberry milkshake on the day i bought the car. I've had sticky buttons from day one. Thank you so much!!! And Toyota has a lot to answer for with that crappy design too!
You’re the best! Thank you.
Did it on my g8 thank you !
Thank you. My son vomitted on the controller. Same buttons also as you. Guess it happens alot to cx5 owners. Will try this soon
Good luck!
now to spend a few hours cleaning the rest of the interior, maybe even removing the breakfast bowl lol!
Glass cleaner foaming action and duster from home depo did the job!!
Thank you
Can i do this with a new rav4 around the engine start/stop button?
Do you think compressed air and the glass cleaner would help dislodge a ring that's stuck under the volume knob?
Our heated seat button and a few others on the center console would not release once pushed down so either full heat or off. After trying out the foaming spray, they all release and the heat can be set for HMoL. Happy wife, happy Life!
Rakalaka😂😂😂 gold
Something is causing my button to stay pushed. Its driving me nuts. I hope this fixes it.
HAAAA! What a Dad!
Hoping this works for my VW Jetta. Wasn't a clumsy coffee spill but I made the mistake of leaving an unopened dr. Pepper can on the passenger seat in 100°+ weather. A couple hours later, BOOM. Exploded all over my dash / ceiling. Learn from my mistake as well yall 😂
What about if you don’t a air compressor
100% works
I used Jigaloo after taking the console out, worked much better
I spilled drinking water in the same area and I’m afraid the buttons and the automatic gears shift stops working, I need to move but I’m afraid to start the car
Feel like this is a dumb question but is the foaming glass cleaner safe for any vehicle? One of my kids just dropped Starbies in my new A4 and I’ve already been thinking of taking it completely apart to clean the bottom. Before I take the whole center control console apart, is this safe to use for any car/electronics?
I'm a hobbyist not an electronics expert but as far as I know non ammonia foaming glass cleaner will not harm any electronics(just don't flood it). I've detailed all of my cars with foaming glass cleaner and compressed air for years and never had an issue. On sticky stuff it can take a few applications. Sprayaway brand is non anomia I'm pretty sure. I use Vietek, available at National Coatings and Supplies, its a private label thing. Sprayaway is my second choice but works well.
How did it work after a day or so after it completely dried? Still doing good? I purchased a car with super sticky buttons and don't k ow how to clean them right on the dash!
Goad for two days then had to do it one more time and she said it was still good to go almost a year later :)
Be careful with anything potentially corrosive. I'd try a can of electronics cleaner first, or just a spray can with isopropyl alcohol. It would suck if you got the mechanical aspect cleaned out, but then the buttons (eventually) ceased working because the electrical bits got messed up. I would hope the car manufacturers have some sort of water shielding behind those panels to shield electronics, but you never know.
Dig that, that product is non-amonia and gentle enough to use on almost any surface. I talked to the rep and its safe for interior tech, even laptop keyboards, just not so much, and 125 psi :) I've used it on three cars for similar issues since and all good. Very good advice hillie47!
@@MissedAGear Maybe get some bibs for the messy drivers? ;)
@@hillie47 Indeed!
Does that stick part that you used to spray it off come with the spray? I bought a spray bottle and it doesn’t have it ?
That's the blow gun from his air compressor.
What are you using to fix your buttons because i cant use wd-40
I use a non amonia foaming glass cleaner. Srayaway or something like that.
Thnx … not sure about the be joules look
HA! It's my daughters car. I'm not a fan either
What’s the glass cleaner? I can’t find it online. You didn’t show it
Sprayaway non ammonia cleaner is widely available. I use a private label cleaner called Vietek only available at NCS/SSI automotive paint stores.
Omg .. my friend projectile vomited 🤮 on my Cadillac CTS Control panel !! I cleaned immediately. Next day my controls for radio & heater not working !! I got Electronic cleaner tonight sprayed on & leaving over night .. I’m freaked out !! I’m gonna try your method if it’s still not working tomorrow 😳
And I'm just going to guess that did not work, right? The thing about electronic cleaner sprays, for example, CRC Electra Spray, is that they dry almost instantly. This is why you can shoot electronic parts with it safely. What you sprayed on to leave overnight would have been dry before you exited the vehicle for the night.
Foam glass cleaner is great because it's wet but it's not liquid. While it has alcohol content and will dry, it doesn't dry immediately meaning it can soak the grunge amd then be removed without damaging electronics. I would still be very reserved and judicious using foaming glass cleaner on or near electronics and would recommend the CRC electronic spray cleaner for electronics 99.999% of the time.
Projectile vomit. Gross!
May i know the name of product you used ?
Vieteck Glassy. They sell it at National Coatings and supplies and Single Source stores. Any non ammonia foaming glass gleaner would probably work. Im not an expert but never had an issue.
Lol I'm watching this video because I spilled coffee in my car and a button is stuck.
SAME 😂
Same... haha
Me 2
I spilled a mixed beverage on a road trip 🤣
Me too.
Will that air in a can work or do I need a compressor
You can try it, might not be strong enough...
Bro you just saved me from spending $2000 on a new Audi infotainment pad 😂😂😂😂
My MMI console in my A8 is stuck, due to ME spilling a cup of tea with honey. My Air Con is also stuck, in the middle of summer.
Thank u mate!
I'm so pissed right now! My colleague spilled his milktea over the buttons on my 2 month old car
Will this work on a touchpad?
Hmm, not sure
What about rubbing alcohol?
Have to be careful, some of the coatings on the interior can be removed with alcohol. Not all but best to check a small spot first to make sure. As far as I know alcohol wont harm electronics but that is anecdotal information. I've used non ammonia foaming glass gleaner for years and never had an issue.
No mames i almost went thru a breakup for some buttons on my jeep
This is a great video on what not to do.
vanilla latte frappuccino cappuccino wappuchino map of chino Al Pacino fungal lino with cinnamon
Question is???
Did it work the next morning??? Because usually the glass cleaner, steamer, compressed air fixes the immediate problem. BUT THE SUGARS in those drinks coagulate again in time and the buttons STICK AGAIN!
Took another run at it about two weeks later and its been great since
My wife’s always spilling her drinks and the buttons are sticky 🤦♂️
Worked great! Thank you for the video!
I left a coke and it exploded with the heat
Yes Shame on MAZDA
I hate that stupid button!
They also gave it no bracket so it easily pushes in with a small amount of weight on it’ Even BIGGER SHAME on Mazda for that
Who throws that right in the middle with Zero support u see it and in order to use it you push down 🤷♂️
“Give that guy a raise”
Foam and glass cleaner on electrical switches questionable? Ok it worked but risky better off using proper electric cleaning solvent then lube!
Was your first sentence a question?
@@ThatOne77 Can you read?
@@ApnaChoud I'll take that as a "no."

Waste vodka all over 😢
I'm here because I was rear ended by a young woman. Made me spill a whole can of Red Bull all over my dash and center console, all my buttons and dials are stuck or hard to turn. Please do not text and drive.
Take those awful fake diamonds things off your controls.
It's my daughters car, its her jam.
