I recently bought a CX-5 Carbon for these reasons: a real transmission (no cvt), no turbo, great steering response, tried and true engine design, proven reliability, size just right, no need for roomy back seats, no interest in towing, luxurious interior, just enough tech, very reasonable msrp.

As a 2021 cx5 owner (for 2 years now), it's most definitely not quiet lol. And at fast speeds turns feel like it's going to flip the car over, so yeah handling is not the best either. Honestly the only thing mazda has going for it is the nice exterior and the nice interior. The rav4 is an atrocious looking car and that's the only reason I got a mazda. But let's not kid ourselves, plenty of downsides to mazda.

I thought I was going to get 6 real reasons it was deal breaker. Instead, I get complaints about engine power, fuel efficiency, lack of towing, lack of touch screen preference everywhere, lack of space, and prices. I thought it was more serious things like reliability issues - none of those mentioned. We went ahead and bought a 2023 CX-5 slightly used for a $10,000 discount under MSRP (3000 miles on the odometer) and the wife loves it. We even get better gas mileage than stated here, averaging about 25 mpg in mixed driving. The engine can go 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds which means it has the power necessary to merge in all traffic situations (the turbo is 6.5 seconds which no one needs unless they plan to race it).

Start with the fact that it does not use a CVT transmission - reason enough to choose it over a Toyota. Unless of course you plan on replacing your transmission later in the car life or just not keeping your car for more than five years.

People run from CVT's. That's why Honda's aren't selling as many cars as they used to. For example, sales for the Honda Accord are dismal. It's because Honda keeps sticking CVT's in their Accords. Plus, they got rid of the 2.0T and V6's with their bulletproof automatic transmissions and engines.

The CX-5 turbo doesn't require premium gas. On regular gas you get 227 HP & 310 lb-ft of torque, & on premium gas you get 256 HP & 320 lb-ft of torque which isn't that much of a jump to justify paying more for premium gas

Fun fact: Drive any other cars in competition like Rav4, CR-V, Tucson, Sportage, Rogue and so on. Then sit behind CX-5. Not even Turbo, just N/A engine. None of these competitors come even close to the driving dynamics of Mazda products. Period. Those 6 “reasons” are not enough to convince people who appreciate engineering not to buy this great product. It’s hidden gem.

You are so on the money my man! I've owned Mazda cars for 7+ years now. From the CX-3, CX-5 and now the MX-30 and they've all been reliable (petrol engine) but the quality is just outstanding. Tried a Q3 and the basic model was about £10k more than the top model CX-5, with manual seats. Mazda wins it for me on every front.

My 2024 2.5 S Select non turbo gets 33-34 mpg on the highway and 27-29 city legit. His criticism doesn’t wash in real world driving.
I don’t see a lot of Rav 4’s, Sportages or CRV’s towing anything around. In fact, I never have. Who cares?
The cabin is quiet. Drive a CX 5 and then a Rav 4….’nuff said.
I don’t care about hauling cargo or people around. It has enough space to do the basics. It’s a freakin compact SUV. Fact is, the difference between it and the others is minimal. If you want space, buy a bigger SUV.
The interior is hands down stylishly luxurious compared to the competition, some of which are out and out clunky.
Lastly, drive the others and save the CX 5 for last. No comparison in the “fun factor”.

There are MANY that love the cx5 & that is proven by its number of sales & being 1 of mazdas best sellers for a VERY long time. So I TOTALLY disagree with this analysis.

    1. No one wants a CVT over Mazda's automatic transmission
    2. Fuel efficiency is perfect for not having a crappy CVT. I'll happily pay for gas vs fixing tranny every now and then
    3. Who buys a small crossover for its towing capacity? 😂wtf?
    4. Cargo space is perfect as it is. If you're Opening a moving company, buy a truck.
    5. Price is fair for what you get. An elegant and reliable crossover with luxurious interior with no CVT and more than enough power to move you around like a king.

I love this comment. It speaks to how buyers buy cars based on the good things Brake Bias said - exceptional design and reliability in all areas - that are so true that they render the small measurement data comparisons to other cars like cargo space and mpg practically almost irrelevant especially because the Mazda "feels" like such a superior product. I bought one December 2023. I agree to some of the not-so-great features identified in the video like I am very annoyed by some of the automation that I didn't understand when I bought the car, but I would still buy it over the Honda, Toyota, Ford, Subaru, Chevy, Nissan competitors. They look and feel like a grade below the Mazda CX-5.

It gets the same gas mileage as last generations RAV4 and honestly it is an older car platform however you don't buy this vehicle because it's the most spacious or the best on gas you buy it because it drives like a car and not just any car but a really good car it's actually fun to drive The Toyota and the kias have literally zero driving character second the interior is a class above at least to and it's Lexus quiet, so if you can give up a little gas mileage and you don't have to have the biggest vehicle, also it has classically good looks in the same time frame Toyotas been through two generation RAV4s the same thing with Kia One of the key is I thought looked really good I think it's the Sportage but now it just looks average and tacky they managed to make this car look good without any sort of body kits or add-ons or cladding just pure body lines. this is not a sports car or a high-end luxury SUV, it's just a really nice affordable SUV with fun handling remember these things start at $28,000 and you can get one well equipped with mini extras in the 32,000 range it's a lot of car for the money it's why I will be interested to see us replacement It may or may not be as nice Go look at a Subaru that's $28,000 let me know how loud it is and what the interior quality looks like it's a fine car for the money actually it's a really nice car for the money

Slow brakes. You have to press it long to stop the vehicle.
Slow transmission shifts makes vehicle noise.
    Poor suspension.
Your whole upper body moves when driving on local roads and making turns. Sometimes it feels like vehicle is flipping over.
Worst engine sound during initial pickup.
When in traffic, it's hard to move vehicle slowly because it takes time to get vehicle to required speed and then it's hard to stop it immediately.
