    Well, that was unexpected.
    While on our way from Maine to Elkhart, Indiana, to have meetings with some of our partners and to get some preventative maintenance done, Corey noticed that the RV was looking a little off in his mirror, so we pulled over at a rest stop less than a mile down the road.
    After a quick inspection of the rig, we realized that we broke a leaf spring. We have had a tire blow out before, but this was something different as we needed to find a new part before we could even attempt to fix it ourselves.
    Google Maps is an RVer’s best friend. Jess contacted multiple RV dealersrhip and companies in the area with no luck and then found a spring shop that had our leaf spring about 45 mintues from the rest stop. We detatched, and Jess and Lily went to go grab the part while Corey and Leila started getting the tools we needed ready and the RV prepped for the repair.
    Jess got 2 new leaf springs as the other one looked like it was going to break any minute and all new Ubolts which was a recommendation from the spring shop. A few hours later, we were back on the road again!
    The broken leaf spring made us concerned that even though we are super careful with what we bring into the RV, we might be overweight, so we went to a CAT Scale to see if that was the problem. What we found is that even with our upgraded axles, we were within stock specs for weight, but that we were a little tongue heavy on the truck. So we got rid of some things in the RV that we have been carrying from the renovation and the solar install, and we reallocated some weight farther back in the RV to take it off the front end.
    Sometimes WHERE you put weight in the RV is almost as important as HOW MUCH weight you put in it!
    Stay tuned for the next episode where we wrap up our time in Elkhart and head further West to forge a knife with an FOS Crew Member! Be sure to like and subscribe and click on the bell icon for notifications when we release new videos!

    Protip for doing suspension work: bigger and more ratchet straps and line up bars. Also, get the spring in the mounts and then bolt the axle to the spring. Or at least leave the axle bolts loose.

    • @1ltlbrnc
      @1ltlbrnc Год назад +12

      Definitely like he said spring in the mounts first. Makes it a lot easier to line up the bolts. The axle Is easy to line up after because of the center pin in the spring. Also definitely one side at a time. It helps with lining up the spring to axle and you only have to support one side at a time. Nice work for never having done it!

    It never ceases to amaze me how often that leaf springs or leaf spring hangers fail on RVs. These companies would be out of business with all the recalls that a car company would be buried under with all the safety concerns. Something’s gotta change.

    Excellent job changing the springs, and in a safer place. Definitely, think outside the box when needing parts for your RV. Most RV parts will be more costly, and more than likely not in stock at a RV repair shop. Better to check around at other businesses. It's also always good to support a local business. Corey like you mentioned, having tools, good quality tools for the RV, and your tow vehicle is a must!

  • @dc6233
    @dc6233 Год назад +2

    6:00 - "Made in China" - At least you know it's a quality part... Always leave ALL the bolts loose until they are all in place, then you can start tightening them. Makes it easier when things are floating a bit to get everything in place. And although it seems counterintuitive, always loosen your hardest to get to bolts first, you don't need that last bolt to hold you up when it's the hardest to access. Great job on the road side repair!!

    You done good on replacing both Springs and u bolts Corey.... tip..... Get a cheap pair of knee pads at harbor freight for future use , thank me later. The spring hanger u bolts will stretch over time.
    Remember 250,000 parts all built by the cheapest bidders!! These things aren't manufactured to drive daily. They're made to go 100 miles once or twice a year and sit in the storage space the other 11 months...

    We have a 2017 Solitude fifth wheel. 34 feet long. A couple years back we started breaking springs. After having two separate incidences a Tech at a dealership let it slip ( at first Grand Design denied this but soon came around when the threat of law suit was mentioned) that we should have 4000 LB springs on a rig this big. Grand Design followed through and replaced all four springs for us. Next it was shackle problems and I don't have room to tell that whole story! I also upgraded to G Rated tires. You know the blood and guts of an RV are the wheels and suspension, so you would think manufactures would pay more attention to that. Burlington Bill here, songwriter here on you-tube

    Weight, weight, weight...This is the hidden surprise in RVing! Maybe you could do a whole video on weight, its impacts and how to correct it. Along with a couple of trips to the scales. Proper tire inflation and reduction of weight are two important ways to improve fuel economy. Glad it all worked out!

    So glad you all were able to get this fixed. Just a tip I learned from print aircraft seats together, be careful hammering bolts through, it can damage the threads. If the bolt is started, you can use the wrench or impact driver to screw it into the hole. Again, hopefully you never need to use this tip, just with having if you do.

    Great job on getting it done. The one thing I would suggest from someone that works on cars is fit everything in but don’t tighten them. That will help in your “persuasion” getting everything set up. It’ll also help prevent anything from binding as you add load. Otherwise you got it done and that’s all that matters. Great job looking at the other side so you didn’t have to replace it in an unsafe area down the road.

    Glad you guys found a trailer repair company for your parts, we had a spring hanlger break and found a trailer repair shop replace the hanger and Lippert even sent us a check to pay for the repair. You were in my neck of the wood. I’m 30 mins south east of Newburgh. It’s great to know about that shop being so close to me.
    Some of our NY roads are so terrible.
    Thank you for making these great videos

    I had to replace one of my springs this summer as well. Luckily the main spring didnt break but the pin holding the pack together and one of the middle springs. I was noticing my trailer crabwalking and discovered it. Replaced both sides and now have a brand new extra one as a back up. Glad you got to the side of the road safely!

    I had a shackle break, that I found when parked. I upgraded the the Road Armor equalizer and switched everything to heavy duty shackles with wet bolts. I found it easier to hook everything to the equalizer and apply force with a socket to the shackle bolt get the front and rear hanger into place. Also get the Safe Jack system! Best jack system to use on an RV.

    Thank you! We bought a 20 year old trailer last year that we're updating. We're learning how horrible the roads are here in the Midwest. We'll be buying a larger impact wrench and another jack today. Better to be prepared - the fact that I found this is usually a warning that it's going to happen to us, lol!

    Tip: We keep a yoga mat in our storage compartment. It comes in very handy when you need to do some work like this. We had a leaf spring break once too. A 3 hour drive turned into a 9 hour drive between going get the part and making the repair. We too were thankful we had a good place to pull over.

    Nice job. When put under some pressure, most of us come up with a way to accomplish what needs to be done. Even if we’ve never done it before.
    I carry a couple of those foam square flooring pieces for kneeling down on if I need to work on anything on the motor home.
    Came in handy changing a flat last summer.

    Great video, guys! Between the video and the tips from the experts in the comment section, its very helpful. Not only showing how to change the leaf springs but emphasizing checking your weights is fantastic. I have a Forest River Rockwood 5th wheel that has Dexter’s Torflex axles - so it doesn’t have leaf springs. Airstream uses the same axles. Leaf springs and their hangers seem to be problematic so the Torflex axles are a huge plus to me.

    The best upgrade I’ve ever made to my Transcend and TV is the addition of Sumo Springs to the camper and my TV.. Makes a huge difference in ride of both and take a lot of impact off the leaf springs.

    So impressed with your ability to handle such a stressful situation. We had a similar situation as we were just concluding our own month long trip with our travel trailer a couple weeks ago. Passing through St Louis and a pot hole caused the center bolt on the axle to sheer off. The leaf pushed the axle backwards and the trailer began "Dog Tailing". I did not have the right set of tools to get the axle back in place so we had to wait for tow service (in a rough area) which took 2 days to get because that night St. Louis received 8 inches of rain in 3 hours. Took a total of 4 days to get towed and repaired before we were back on the road.
