  • We were just trying to do something good, when some power tripping customs agents who were apparently bored that day decided to throw everything they could at me. Even though both agents had completely different ideas of what these chairs were classified as, and what laws I broke by trying to bring them in to the country, both were adamant about the fact that THEY were right. After a very long detainment and a story that I will tell in full once this all blows over, it was made very clear that if I tried to bring these chairs into the country again I would be arrested on the spot.
I have to say a huge thank you to ‪@BruceCookfmx‬ for doing everything he could on his end to get the situation worked out, Chase Barber from ‪@EdisonMotors‬ for offering to hop in his pickup and drive down to the border on the spot to argue on my behalf and try to come up with a solution, and the cyber security company Aura for offering to sponsor this video in support of the project. Have them prepare the paperwork in advance and ship the bikes across the border with a Canadian Frieght company. in 2018 I traveled from Japan to Canada for a visit, I'm a Canadian Citizen, and my flight took me through LAX (oh man what a $hit show that place was) then to Vancouver, and then to my hometown. At that point, I rented a car, a minivan, that had Ontario plates on it. I went to Oregon to visit friends, and got through the border to the US with just a few questions and a "Welcome to the USA". I was traveling with my adult daughter who is Canadian/Japanese. We visited friends and went back to my hometown. At the border entering Canada, we got detained.
They could not read my "Japanese" driver's license, which is why I had an "International" driver's license, they wanted me to pay a $150 fee to have my Japanese driver's license translated... 🙄 which I refused to do as my International driver's license was valid. The not-so-bright border agent said that my Japanese driver's license could be anything how did he know... I pointed out that the international driver's license listed the number on my Japanese driver's license. Then they wanted to know where I went and who I visited, I told them "Friends in the US" and they wanted names and addresses, which I refused to give them. Next, they questioned why I was driving a car from BC with Ontario license plates...? I told them it was a rental and they had the car's registration, my rental agreement, etc and maybe they should ask the rental car company, I just took the car they offered. They told me it was suspicious that I was from BC but driving a car with Ontario license plates. In the meantime they had taken everything out of the car and just threw our stuff on the ground like trash, they opened up our suitcases and tossed our clothes on the ground. My daughter started to record them doing this and they took her phone and told her she would not get it back.
Next, they started with my daughter who had just graduated from UBC with an engineering degree (proud papa!) as she had both a Japanese and Canadian passport, they were concerned that she did not have a visa to be in Canada, this low IQ agent actually asked her where her visa was on her Japanese passport to be allowed to be in Canada while holding her Canadian Passport in the same hand. We were detained for about four hours until an older wiser agent finally showed up, he went over everything, and he went to hand me back all of our paperwork and said we could leave, I said that we should get an apology from the other agents who made such a mess, he withdrew the paperwork and said "Shall we strip search your daughter?" (there were only male agents in attendance). I said "no" and took our paperwork back, we spent maybe 30 minutes repacking our suitcases and other stuff into the rental car and returned to my hometown. My family was outraged at the whole deal, and my mum knew the local MLA she used to babysit him, he came and talked to us, I gave him all of the details the names, etc of the people who did this and... nothing happened. The MLA later explained that the border agents were Federal and BC the province could do nothing, in fact, the border agency said they had no record of the incident. We did nothing wrong or illegal, all of our paperwork was in order, and neither myself nor my daughter has ever been arrested, not even a traffic ticket in the last 30+ years but this is how we were treated by Federal thugs with badges.
Sorry for the long rant, but it's good to tell these stories, I've not told this one publicly until now because my daughter was still living in Canada and I did not want her to get any blowback, she no longer lives in Canada.
Thanks for reading my story, I hope that someone gets their chit straight and lets Casey drop off the off-road non-regulated electric bikes soon.
    Cheers from Tokyo!

I've had the opposite experience. My entries into Canada have always been pleasant.
It's my return back to the US that has usually been a problem with egos of Border Agents and that was usually the ones at the "gate". When I was told that they wanted to empty my U-Haul truck because the lady at the "gate" didn't believe that being an Alaskan for so many years that she couldn't believe that I didn't have furs and trophies that I wasn't acknowledging. When I entered the facility, it was shift change. A supervisor asked why I was there, I told him and he replied that it would be awhile for shift change. He came back a short later and asked again why I was there and then asked if I cared if they searched the truck. I told him no and he sent me on my way.
After traveling across western Canada for several days going and coming from Alaska, the last thing you want is some ego power US agent giving you a hassle.

They were convinced that because I had a small toolbox in my trunk, I was going down there to work illegally. They held me up for four hours before turning me back and telling me that I can't go back any more without proof of employment in Canada, and full documentation that my taxes are paid up for some reason.
They kept grilling me as to what I was really going there for, and by the time I knew they weren't letting me in regardless what I said, I guess I shouldn't have said that I was really going there because I had a date with his wife.

As another Canadian, you were screwed over by those border agents and Canadian agents are often known for letting things fly, but it's just your bad luck that you ended up with two of the rare power-tripping agents. The situation for Canadians travelling into the U.S. with questionable situations is usually worse than for Americans heading 'North.'
However, that being said, my sister spoke of an elderly Canadian couple heading home in their car. They, too, ran into nasty agents and had their car taken apart by agents searching for 'smuggled' goods. In addition, the couple was left to reassemble their vehicle by themselves! My sister and her husband, a mechanic, did it for them.
Where you went wrong, was the unregistered trailer AND the commercial vehicle. Those are basics which anyone who has knowledge of crossing borders with vehicles.
Unless the Canadian agents said specifically that you are banned from entering Canada completely or for three years (The minimum ban) you personally don't face a ban.
At any border crossing in the world your passport would have been invalid; however, you as an American don't need a passport to enter Canada by land or sea, but you will need a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)-compliant travel document (In Ontario we can get an enhanced ID card to enter the US by land or sea). By air everyone in the world requires a passport to enter another country basically.
I would think a full description of the 4-wheeled bikes from a manufacturer plus a letter describing the intent for said bikes and that they are NOT being sold, PLUS a letter from the initial person receiving them in Canada would have smoothed things over.
You should have asked for something in writing from whomever you spoke to at Canadian Customs.
If you try again, please be sure to get it in writing, that you won't be charged import duties, Federal Sales Tax or Provincial Sales Tax, something you haven't mentioned. All goods imported into Canada are subject to local GST/HST (GST/HST are a combination of provincial and federal sales taxes with the provincial percentages varying from province to province (Alberta has the lowest!!!) As for bicycles, on top of the GST/HST (Different provinces call it one of the two), complete bikes are subject to an additional 13% import duty. Framesets are subject to an additional 5% import duty.
If you could get them classified as auto parts, you would face 0% import duties under the present agreement. KART parts are classified as auto parts, btw!!!
Anyone trying to do what you are doing in the opposite direction across the same border would face at least the same difficulty. You just tried with too much paperwork out of order!

Best story told to me by a friend was he had been hauling his own hay from Canada into the USA to sell to farmers that were short of hay. He had over the weeks hauled several loads into the USA. A few weeks later he had to go into the USA for some farm parts and went with his crew cab ford pickup. That pickup always in the back seat was littered with papers and junk and the occassional receipt. As he came back into Canada the border patrol said to pull over for inspection. They opened the hood and found nothing , then pulled all the waste in the back seat area outside with the result of a large pile on each side of the truck on the pavement. He had been told to wait inside while all this played out. The found nothing and was told he was free to leave. He walked over to the truck and quickly retrieved a few receipts and then got in the truck to leave. As he backed out of the stall to leave they came running over and demanded that he clean up the mess. He smiled and said that it was in his truck and they pulled it out and created the mess and they were entitled to keep the mess and he drove off. He had never had a problem before at entering into the USA of re entry into Canada. He said he was going to avoid that crossing for a little while because there were other crossings within a reasonable distance.

Three years ago I was driving a tractor trailer rig in the Buffalo NY area and mistakenly got on the ramp to go over the Peace Bridge into Canada. When I got to the Canadian Customs agent on the other side of the bridge, the first thing I said to him was, "I have absolutely no business being in Canada. I got stuck on the ramp." He chuckled, said it happens all the time, then directed me to pull off into an area to wait until they could get someone to lead me back on to the Peace Bridge going in the opposite direction. 20 minutes or so later, a police car escorted me through a couple of automated gates and got me back on the bridge. Very low-stress on the part of the Canadians, and even the US Customs when I went back over to the US side. My fears of being detained never materialized. @Chopatube. Come and spend your tourist dollars here in New Zealand or with our cousins in "neighbouring" Australia which is 1,000 miles away. They're both a bit different and a bit the same. NZ if you want snow skiing and Aussie if you want huge inland deserts that make even the USA look small. Plus we speak English, well our own versions of, in both countries. The exchange rate with US dollars means you get more for your money in Australia and then even more again in NZ dollars. Plus remember we don't routinely "tip" here. The price you see, on menus etc, is the price you pay, including taxes. You've gotta drive on the wrong side of the road, if you're driving here, though. Petrol/Gasoline and Diesel fuel costs more in NZ but we're only a little country, about as big as the state of Wyoming, considering all our islands put together, so you're not as far away from places, and don't have to drive as far anyway. Note it is a long way to fly, from say Los Angeles to Auckland NZ. It's about a 13 hour non-stop flight I think. Currently, July, it is mid-Winter for the Southern Hemisphere, so snow skiing in NZ and in Australia the inland deserts are cooler than at other times of the year.

I was detained because I didn't have a credit card (I was pretty young.) They said I had to prove financial solvency with either a credit card or $100 cash (remember when $100 was a lot of money?) I had all the food I needed and I'd filled up with gas before I got to the border, so I didn't think I needed lot of cash. I went back to the nearest US town and waited until the bank opened the next morning to empty my savings account. This time they waved me across without a second glance. I did go camping, but the whole episode left a sour taste in my mouth. I haven't been back to Canada since.

I wasn't always this way. Heading north, I went through the Blaine truck route customs in 2017. The Canadian agent asked where we were from, I told him and he said, "cool". Asked a couple of the other usual questions and he told us we could go. He was awesome! Heading back into America, the agent asked why we were coming back so soon and a couple other questions, then waved us on through. I could understand why they were asked. It was biz as usual.
Sadly, the times have changed in so many ways. Politics aside, everyone seems to be at each other's throats these days. Especially if they think they've been wronged or you're questioning their opinion in some way. It really shows in the relationships between those in positions of authority and the public. Just look what flight agents deal with in airline traffic these days. Not saying it's right but the confrontational attitude and lack of civility is on both sides. Don't think all agents are abusive from power alone. They're often treated poorly by the public as well. Sadly, such are the times we live in and never forget, our leaders and others want it exactly this way. Fact! They've won this round.

Casey, I feel your pain brother!! I am currently fifty two years of age , but when I was twenty three a friend of mine and I were up in Bellingham, Washington and on a whim, decided we were going to go to Canada because neither one of us had ever been. We tried to cross the Canadian border at Blaine, Washington. After being detained for seven hours with every orifice of our vehicle and persons inspected, they couldn't find anything wrong, but told us that they were denying us access to their country and that they didn't want "our kind" in Canada, I'm still not quite sure what that meant?? They gave us a paper to give to the US border guards that was supposed to be to let them know that we had not actually gone into Canada. When we got turned around and over to the US side, we gave them the paper and they pulled us in for another five hours of having every orifice on our vehicle and persons inspected for a second time. It turned out that the Canadian border guards had given us a paper that they only give to wanted convicted felons. The US border guards couldn't comprehend why they had given it to us because they found absolutely nothing wrong. I was so upset that at that moment, if the United States had declared war on Canada, I would have been the first person in line for a weapon!! Yes, the signature thing was stupid, even if legally correct, but so was driving an unregistered trailer. If he was entering to visit with none of the other stuff going on, the officer would have handed it back and told him to sign it. When you’re driving a trailer illegally, importing commercial goods, those commercial goods are potentially regulated, yeah, you’re going to get hit with everything. When you cross international borders you need to have your ducks in a row, you don’t wing it.

I brought in a group of perhaps the most harmless group you can imagine a group of senior citizens for a tour of the Canadian Rockies. The border patrol pulled off a passenger who was using a walker and 80 years old and proceeded to treat him like a terrorist, practically drag him off, complaining the whole way why he could not walk like a "normal" person, arrest him and deport him. Turns out he got into a fight when he was 20 years old and had an assault conviction - that's it. A 60-year-old charge. Nothing else. I stopped driving Canadian trips after that, I told my boss he can give them to someone else. It's been 20+ years and I am still driving the lower 48.

@ramjet4025 Well, l can honestly say that I feel bad if you've had negative interaction with law enforcement in the past. Unfortunately no system is perfect as there are a few police officers that make a bad name for others. I can assure you that these officers are in the minority as 95+% of police officers are truly good people who have a job to do (at least in my department).
I learned very early in my career that by treating others with the respect that I'd want to be treated with goes a long way. I truly loved being in a position where I could help people and not expect anything in return other than a handshake and thank you. I loved being friendly and cordial with people I'd interact with and made many friends from all walks of life.
I'm not here to debate with you but just wanted to remind you that it's not a good thing to stereotype an entire occupation because of a few bad apples. I can also assure you that if we ever met in person, I'd leave you feeling differently and you'd walk away with with a positive impression. I'm not saying that to sound cocky but I truly love helping people and breaking the stereotype that all cops have a chip on their shoulder. I also don't take things personally when some individuals deliberately go out of their way to make things difficult. I know that it's part of the job.
I wish you the best and can only hope that what I responded with is sincere and you don't classify an entire occupation based on very few officers who probably shouldn't have been police officers in the first place. I hope that you believe what I wrote was me being honest and gives you a new perspective on law enforcement officers.

The reality is that all the customs officer needed to say was that we have different laws than the USA. I noticed that you don't have a valid passport, placing a finger on the signature line. And you are in a commercial tow truck, pulling a illegal trailer. So I can't let you through. I'm sorry but I need to detain you while I do an investigation. After the investigation they should have just said. We are not going to be able to allow you to enter with this truck and trailer. You don't have the proper paperwork. If you want you can have someone meet you at the border tomorrow and get the load. If your passport isn't valid then we will still not be able to allow you to enter Canada.
Why is it hard to tell someone what they need to do. Instead of telling them that you are never going to be allowed to enter the country.
Now it's not a simple thing and the government officials are going to have to get involved because of one thing. Laws are different between the two countries. So I guess now I'll wait to see if the queen and the president will have to get involved. Sorry I'm from the USA and I believe that the English queen is like your president of Canada. Please let me know if I'm wrong. Still is sad that they didn't say what could be done. Chase has had to get things from the border for the same type of things.
Lastly thanks for protecting the border of your country. The last thing that I would want to see is that tow truck being impounded for driving without the proper paperwork.

A word of warning: if you have ever been turned back at the Canadian border (refused entry) for any reason, when you attempt to cross the next time they will ask, "Have you ever been deported from Canada?" If you say "no", you will be charged with "illegal re-entry", and "lying to a customs officer". You then are at their mercy. This happened with our educational group 40 some years after one member was turned back in 1972 for telling the truth that he was mistakenly arrested as a teen, and no charges were ever filed. My last experience crossing alone to canoe and fish was a four hour delay and complete unpacking of my gear before being allowed.

A friend of mine , a scout leader was taking a group of kids to Buffalo from Toronto. He told the kids how to react to any questions, answer politely ,only tell the truth and speak only when spoken to. 1 child when asked where he was from answered Jamaica (he was 1 yr old when he came to Canada) They spent the entire day at the border. When there was a shift change they agreed he could enter the USA it was too late and they returned to Canada. Perhaps the lesson learned is only tell them what they want to hear and move on.

A few years ago we took two of our grandchildren on a day trip into Canada. Crossed at Grand Portage Minnesota. Had permission slips, medical release forms, passports, .... Almost couldn't get back into the US!😢 If only they were as worried about children crossing from the southern border!! The southern "slave trade" is alive and well!

Yep, I'm from the Detroit area and have been detained at the border and sent back home. Woman at the customs booth coming off the Ambassador Bridge didn't like that my girlfriend (now my wife) was a good bit younger than me so she sent us to Immigration, not customs. I can tell you one thing certain, Canada has NOTHING and NOBODY worth dealing with their government officials and the hassle of their border.
