  • Guys, I needed to rebuild my 1988 Ford F250 Power Steering Pump, so I filmed the whole thing. There was a decent video already up on RUclips, but it omitted a few steps, so I (in usual fashion) made a SUPER long video about it, LOL. I bought one of the many kits online, I think I bought it from Rock Auto. The Power Steering Pump Kit comes with one extra O-ring and I never did find out where it goes (maybe it is for a new or older power steering pump). I am not sure what years of Ford F250 this covers, probably 86 to 92ish but don't quote me on that.
(don't forget, if you are on PC, the arrow keys are a quick way to fast forward or rewind)
    Table of Contents:
0:00 "Intro - Removing Plastic Reservoir"
    3:00 "Removing Retaining Clip"
    5:45 "Removing Internals"
9:30 "Pulley Removal (I broke mine, so this section consisted of me pulling the steel pulley boss)"
    14:29 "O-Ring Kit Display"
    15:24 "O-Ring Installation"
    26:43 "Re-Assembly"
    35:18 "Retaining Ring Installation"
    41:04 "Reinstall of Plastic Reservoir"
42:10 "Reinstall of Fluid Feed Fitting"
    43:05 "Outro"

Great video! I actually pulled my pump off of my 1979 Ford Bronco at it looks exactly like the one you just rebuilt. The only thing I saw different is you had to get something off of the shaft. Mine just slid out as just the shaft. My rebuild kit also comes with a shaft bushing. I didn't see anywhere that you replaced that. I think you took some emory cloth to it. Once again...great video. This will help me a lot!!!

Thanks for the video! What a pain in the ass, I battled into the night prior to finding your video. I appreciate the time you spent. Your tips help me complete my rebuild. Thanks again.

Good video, and great to see what I'm getting into on my 1989 F250. If you had squeezed the whole assembly together, compressing that Belleville washer (what you called a "spring washer"), it would have made getting that first circlip out a LOT easier. I'm assuming that all the work with the shaft was because you don't have a hydraulic press. As you discovered, the little wood clamp isn't a substitute for even a little 12-ton press.

U might could've used air pressure to extract the doohickey instead of slap tapping.

    Stupid Q.
My pump is just starting to fail, It works for a while then dies after 10 or 15 minutes. But everything looks good, no leaks no wabble on the shaft, seals are good.
My question is what does that spring & piston do because the rebuild kit doesn't come with a new spring. Could a weakening spring cause power steering to fail?

I'm sorry but this is above my pay grade I don't understand the inner workings of the power steering pump so I really couldn't answer your question, sorry.

Is this the same for the 89 F350 with a 7.3 IDI diesel engine ?.

Is it really worth the hassle? New and rebuilt pumps are less than $200

I bought TWO rebuilt PSP from rock auto for my 93 Ford 7.3 diesel and both have failed in quick order.. All PS lines were replaced with new ones as well as a new Filter being installed on the system with new fluids. I am now dealing with my third PSP which I will rebuild myself. If you reply on the vehicle daily I suggest buying a new pump or rebuilding it yourself so you get a quality pump when all's said and done. The pump I bought at Rock auto was a model number, BBB INDUSTRIES 7112121. Do not buy this brand of pump if at all possible. Very poor rebuilds. IMHO.

you're gonna need a bigger vice!
Those pulleys are a BITCH!!! YOU NEED THE PROPER PULLER! or don't even think about it! I had to use a 2' cheater bar and wrapped the belt as far around the pully as I could and then bring it up around the crankshaft pulley to the top and hold it with another cheater bar to keep the PSP from turning, it was so tight that it deformed the pulley hub, I thought it was gonna break.

Look up some Planet Safe Lubricants AIM. It's WAY better than PB Blaster or WD-anything! I removed my pulley after soaking it overnight with AIM and all I used was a normal sized 1/2 ratchet and no vice needed. AIM makes your life better on anything that should move, squeaks or is rusted. Exhaust manifold bolts aren't even a challenge anymore. (this sounds like an ad, but I use this stuff on everything, so glad I found it and love to introduce people to it. Not a sponsored comment 😜)

If yourn commed off so easy seems to me i'd have had to been taken off recently and sanded or something , them things is CRAZY-TIGHT!

Run the engine for a half hour with the hood closed, and let it get hot. Turn off the engine and remove the bolts before they cool.
