  • Power steering pump is leaking out the front seal, rather than replacing the pump I decided to rebuild the pump, rebuild kits only cost $5-10, much cheaper than an entire pump!

Those are called "sleeper springs" that goes into the rotor assembl for the cam pack. If the cam is scored or galled you'll either want to machine it if it's light scratches or replace it. Just depends on how long someone drove without fluid. And I've read Ford type F was the factory fluid and not knowing any better i replaced type F in my pump and listened to it make noise. One day I was out of type F and only had some Dex III I've kept over the years and I put that in and it immediately quietened down and actually started leaking less. So I'd highly recommend purging any F if someone has the C-II pump and putting in Dex/Merc and I've read some people use Merc V but pigs will fly before I spend an extra $3/qt for something like this type of use. I watched this a couple times and couldn't figure out how to get to the big retaining clip. I finally shined a light in the small hole and could see the clip. I drove a small drill bit into the clip with a hammer and then the clip was out enough to run a flat bladed screwdriver behind and out. +++I do NOT recommend anyone to try to replace slippers or the springs. Leave it in the rotor housing. I was pulling mine apart and had springs going everywhere and honestly had quite a time getting them back in the way they go and those slippers have to be assembled the right direction or the pump won't pump. I ended up putting a little grease on the springs to make them hold still and I just found master mechanic instructions and I guessed how it went back alright. There's actually a couple Ford special tools and i didn't have them and mine is back together. But I figured out why Mechanic's don't rebuild this pump. It's because it takes far too much time. It's why the job is farmed out to Saltillo or China. I can't say I hated doing it because I actually enjoy figuring things out and doing them but I still wouldn't recommend it. It was hot middle of this afternoon and I gave it up to finish this evening and I've accomplished it.

The one left over rubber gasket was for the hi pressure side line that you push into the pump and you had a hard time tightening down with the wrench you felt did not do a good job crabbing

I'm sure there's about 5 88 Ford rangers left out there this may benefit. 😝

Actually there are more 85 to 97 ford ranger and b3000 pickups on the road today then 98 to 2001 ford rangers.
