I spent the last month interning and living at Strawbale Studio with Deanne. Just two weeks ago she was excitedly telling us around the dinner table that this video hit 10k views, now it’s well over 100k !! Deanne is a gem, and SBS is magic, it fills me with so much joy to see this amount of acknowledgment and praise for this place ❤
Over 20 years ago I found a photograph of this strawbale cottage with snow on the ground around it. I've shared the elements of sustainable, passive, natural building with hundreds of students using the photo with the story that this beauty was handcrafted by women, but I did not know who to credit. Thank you @Natural Building and Deanne Bednar for telling Fran Lee, Carolyn Koch, Gregie Mathews and your story! I'm thrilled with tears in my eye to learn the details, see inside, and feel warmth in my chest as warm as a rocket oven heated bench. Best of health and blessings of continued creativity!
I grew up in Vietnam. When we were very poor, my dad had to used straw and clay dirt to build us a house in our 1 acre land by using cob wall method; we were kids around 8-10 years old at time helping out dad putting the wall together; it was fun; the roof was covered by coconut leaves; this was done in 1978; I am glad to see how it begins popular in United States
I did an internship here four years ago and it was on the best experiences of my life. Deanne is a gem and SBS is so special. I’m very grateful to have not only lived there for a month, but actually have a hand in these beautiful creations. I met so many amazing people that passed through as well. When I stayed, we did the finish plaster on middle earth and it’s amazing to see it now ❤ Support her if you can!!
Such an inspiration!!! Thank you the more people see and hearing about the alternative to stick and brick homes. The Oregon Cobb cottage and they have been doing it and teaching for over 30 years. Sorry Deanne I was directed to the channel person. I love that you have done this. This is encouraging to see you do your Cobb studio. I am 60 and want to get starting my own home and growing my grown food and composting toilet. And rain water catchment.I am proud you did this and you should be very proud. What a great job.
I've harbored a secret fantasy of crafting a unique, sculptural home that snuggles gently into the landscape. For someone with an artistic soul, living inside the fruits of imagination elevates life itself as a harmonic artform. These cottages are a visual song of hand, heart, and community. Tremendous awe & respect to you! 🤲✨️❤️🔥
What a beautiful house. When I was young I would like to have a house with the form of a boot, now I see this lady having a fairytale house. I wish you the best, God bless you 🙏
This was a very informative video and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. By the way, I am from India where in the country side villages we can still find houses built in this process. It has excellent insulation capacity and protection in both winter and summer. The earthy colour is very aesthetic and pleasant, which enhances and compliments any kind of ornamental artwork...
Facinating approach to build housing on local natural material. Modern times the synthetic materials are bombarded in the market place & very attractive although they are very expensive and harmful in the long run. Ancient great ideas are back & are creating more environment friendly true natural and minimal architecture in the townscape which is befitting the landscape and then life is becoming more natural also interesting.! Great, keep it up going.!
These organic, living spaces elevate human beings’ frequencies and integrates us back into nature, our true north! Thank you so much for this video! Immediately recognize this as one guidepost for me from One!
Construi minha casa e os móveis cama, sofá,guarda roupa mesa e o galinheiro na técnica de cob ,no momento só falta o acabamento fino ,estou muito feliz com a conquista e o aprendizado diário.
So good to see you, Deanne!! I was just talking to Gretta about our time with you at Christina's. I can't believe it's been 10 years. Much love to you.
I first saw a cob structure on the property of an AirB&B I stayed at in Asheville, NC. It was amazing. I stared at it a long time trying to figure it out. It didn’t appear new but at the same time it seemed very sound and sturdy (no melting/weathering as you’d expect from a mud building!) Excited to learn more!
The beauty of a team!! There is a Tribe somewhere in Africa, I WILL.research it right after my comment. A group of Women tie knots made with help.rope... the result is INCREDIBLE!! A very sturdy round structure with protective spikes on the outside so wild boars don't run into it! They look like stars! Unbelievable, how fast and focused these young and much older women are! In no time, they've got a little dwelling!!Knots and faith..alot of joyful singing while the knotting and designing is being completed! You see? We are all.the same! We all.need a home!
I just love these particular kind of clay based home ❤❤❤ n all around Greenery ..... It's something that touched my heart I am really thrilled n flattered.
This is so beautiful! Deanne is amazing and inspiring person. World needs more people like her! I definitely must build at least some small building using this technique. Thanks for sharing this video! ❤
Thank you for sharing, this is so inspiring! One thing struck me - you can be excited, create at any age! Starting exciting near the retirement is inspiring ❤ kudos! Building feels build with lot of love 💗
Felicitaciones para the art teacher! ❤ 🇺🇾
I for some reason literally cried watching this video the way that the comfort and love came through in this video of those buildings make me reap to piss one to be there
I wonder if we were at the Cob building workshop together back in 1996 or so… I had two sons, one four and the other just barely beginning to walk when we helped Ianto Evans with a lovely cob structure on Earthlands in Massachusetts. I have an awesome photo of my little son sitting on a stone slab which was set chest high as a shelf in the cob wall that was only a few layers higher than that shelf at the time of the photo.
Gorgeous homes, I would love to live in a space like that. It reminds me very much of the Art Nouveau style, which makes sense given it also recognised nature, organic curves and muted hues.
This type of work may prove much more important than these people realize. I love the houses and the way they're built, close to nature. I love the outdoors, and believe this is so much better for the body and soul than anything else. The only better thing would be a cave in the Himalayas.
Deanne...a woman after my own heart! I would love to learn this! However, I'm 67 and would need lots of help. The piece of land is right next door. A spark has been ignited in my heart....the dream begins....❤️ Thank you for the inspiration!
This video is so exciting! While the rest of us are living in the 20th century others have continued this trek of living Ithought disappeared withthe hippies. One of the daunting tasks in making our world more environmentally enmeshed are the building codes. They're so important and don't need to be so limiting I hope some creative genius can develop a system to access and change codes.
Neither this environmentally conscious building/living movement nor hippies have disappeared! We are alive, healthy and happily doing our thing in many places on this earth. 🌻
Lovely 🙏😊❤ I'm still planning my house that I decided over a year ago that build out of this & I'm thnking of the roof. I've always loved the way this hay straw roof looks😊 I wonder how these would last in long winters with a whole lot of snow?

Omg, I have been to this house!!!! My mother in law took me to her house and we made homemade tapered candles in her home. She was so sweet!

So beautiful and surreal. As a black African living in Africa, this is so relatable. This is so "Afrotecture".
How can you call it “Afrotecture” when building with clay, twigs and straw was used in Europe just as well?
@@Celisar1 Its much more common in Africa now, although England still has a fair amount of thatched roofs and clay walls

Thank you man. That’s the idea and you get it 💡🙏
I'm a Michigander!! What a relief to know our climate resonates with this build!!
It's wonderful you can get a group of people to help you build these structures because they are labor-intensive. It's a beautiful complex.
These organic, living spaces elevate human beings’ frequencies and integrates us back into nature, our true north! Thank you so much for this video! Immediately recognize this as one guidepost for me from One!
I'M GOING TO BUILD WHOLE VILLAGES. I LOVE THIS STUFF
Do it! I'll buy one. Can't build one myself, but would LOVE to live in one.
Come to my village an explore & build with a new cob / mud house... We welcome you at anytime.... Cheers🍹
