- Bryce and Misty have spent the last 12 years building a cob home, homesteading, living off the grid, and homeschooling their two daughters. They live without a car, so for transportation, they use taxis and bicycles, and they eventually hope to have a cart that their two horses can pull. For food production, they have a permaculture food forest for fruits and vegetables, chinampa-inspired wetland gardens, a cow and a bull for milk, ducks and chickens for eggs, bees for honey, and they also forage and cultivate feral crops.

These two have put in an impressive amount of work setting up their homestead. The house is built with clay that they collected from the wetland area of their property, their well was dug by hand, and everything from the fences to the staircase was made with wood from within a 20km radius of their home.
The cost to build the house was approximately $1,000 CAD. Most of the building materials (the sand, clay, straw, and wood) came from the land, and things like roofing, lumber, and windows they sourced from secondhand and reclaimed sources. Interestingly, they used several different natural building techniques in the home with each new addition. They usually start with a timber frame, and they have used cob, straw bales and wattle and daub, to fill in the spaces between the beams. And they've also explored using green roofs and earth floors.
Since moving to the land, they had two lovely daughters that they homeschool using unschooling and life immersion methods. They learn about food production, natural building, nature, math, reading, and more!
To earn an income, they do a variety of odd jobs including catering, seasonal farm work, a roadside plant stand, and they also receive the childcare benefit that all families in their province receive. Their primary focus is not how to earn more money but rather how to spend less and have more time. They try to produce as much of what they need on the farm.
For electricity, they have solar panels on the roof and a wind turbine (currently non-operational), for water they have a hand-dug well and rainwater collection barrels, for heat they have wood stoves, they have two composting toilets, and a rocket stove to heat water for their bathtub.

If I had to do it all over again, I would try to live in a community like this. I love this family. Would’ve loved it if they homeschooled my kids, better than any private or public schools.

@@AGH331 In my opinion, it looks like they do science every day. Cooking is science, construction is science, composting is science, and hydroponics is most definitely science. It’s a matter of experimentation.

Ive experienced it myself, while staying at my partner’s grandparents home where they live in Kalang, NSW Australia. However they did build their house with wood, not clay! It’s my most favourite place in the world, you’ll never experience a sense of tranquility like living within nature and living off the land.

It definitely appears to me that several folks out there discovering alternate homes have a high degree of intelligence, common sense and general knowledge of the world. Congratulations to the couple were making a fine contribution to this earth.

I love the idea of sustainable living. This becomes more convincing when I see live examples like this one. You might be surprised but most of the older houses in Kazakhstan were built using clay, straw and manure. They may last forever but require yearly maintenance. Nevertheless this is a realistic way to reach sense of independence. Thank you for sharing.

@melissa cason yes madam indeed money is now a very needed necessity, even tho I'm young I wanted to train myself to live a sustainable life, I took up electrical engineering so I can just run on renewable energy, I would probably live not to far and not to near the cityscapes so that whenever I want I could still access the convinience of commercial goods, but also I want to experience independence far from capitalists. The serendipity and calmness nature could give is what we needed the most in times like this. I hope you are doing great right now madam especially this time of pandemic.
And also it is very wise to save money first before living a life like this so you got yourself covered, if bad things happen. 😄

I am a single mother of three young boys and I have been doing tons of research around a sustainable lifestyle. I plan on investing in an RV trailer this year to begin my journey.

Are you planning on staying put? Only because I’ve watched and saw the effects of RV living on the road on kids. One family has a teenage daughter recently diagnosed with anorexia and always talks about when she can “move away” and a lot of these kids on these videos miss the stability of friends and being close to conventional things, like knowing their own home town, the same people around and the biggest complaint from all the kids was space and privacy.
I think sustainable living and this way of life can be rewarding. But beware of bringing children and minors with no say into this. There could be a lot of resentment and Issues arise later on in life.

Any update? Been living off grid here in Northern Japan for 14 years now, and I am from Sweden. One thing I would recommend is pile as much hard cash as you can while you're in transition to something like this. Be prepared for the worse and savor the beatiful life as much as you can. I am certain that you have put a lot of research and thought into your journey. An environment that includes nature produces creativity in children and provides mental and emotional stability. I lived in the Catskill mountains in a small cabin for three months and it was a wonderful experience. As a child, my siblings and I were not allowed to interact with children who were raised with different values. We ended up naive to the atrocities of life, but we had pure hearts. One of my siblings and our mom have lived in a rural town for 40 plus years and they are happy and content. Never have I resented my childhood. In fact, my heart is still pure and full of love. I have embraced a sustainable way of life along with zero waste. Planning and flexibility are required for a natural way of life. Don't panic from your challenges . Be willing to learn. Budget your finances. Don't involve too many people in your lifestyle and you and the boys will do very well.
I graduated from computer science, I love sci-fi movies, but I really believe that this is the future. A few years ago I would think "What a weirdos" just because we are raised to think this way, to live these "normal" lives just working for money to spend it. I am so glad that I have my own mind and I hope other people will change their minds about what is normal. If we want to live on this earth we need to be more sustainable. It's so exciting to see pioneers like these in my province. I really hope the government becomes more willing to have a conversation with you so that home owners have more options to build the lifestyles they want to live.

Yes the beauracracy is a hassle but various municipalities in Ontario have taken steps to listen to people wanting to living similar lifestyles, including launching urban chicken farm pilot projects and allowing for tiny homes as garden houses on established dwellings. It takes people being pro-active to drive the change.

This is fantastic you have done an amazing job and a great thing for your children. I built a 12 by 12 mud-brick shack in the 80s on my own, sorry with the help of my 5 yr old daughter and kids of the owners of the 600-acre property. All up it cost me around $100. Took me a few months that's waiting for all the bricks to dry. I understand about the hassles with permits etc I almost got dragged into a battle over doing this as a single mother it was frowned upon no idea why, my daughter learnt so much and completely enjoyed living communally, there were 3 houses spread apart. Windows doors cupboards were all donated from neighbours. This is becoming more enticing esp now during covid, its quite obvious now they are doing this for control so I'm selling up and heading off grid again Good luck for the future, a beautiful house and a beautiful family.

@@PoliticalJames Although i hear what you are saying, I believe there is always a solution to every obstacle. When I say " live like this " I am talking about the ethical as much as the practical. Bryce and Misty may be somewhat isolated but communities can equally adopt the same ethos. "Cramping up" people is only beneficial to a select few. I do not believe it is either efficient or resourceful, neither do I subscribe to the " over population " myth. We live on an abundant planet which is being destroyed by an incompetent, mismanaged and flawed system. It lifts my spirits when I see people taking responsibility, stepping out of this system and using their own ingenuity /resourcefulness to enable their children to experience a much more fulfilling life.

In the United States, there are so many building code regulations and home owner associations that it would be hard to live like this in most places.

@@iconicblunt5593 We had steel framed windows in Solid walled social housing in the Uk. 100 years of coats of paint stopped sod all. There would be enough water running off them to supply a pond.
The temperature difference we expect everything to cope with is immense.
Heat always heads to cold, not the other way around. So your breath being hot will head to the coldest spot to dump it's moisture.
Having lived outdoors for a while, having any windows and roof is better than nothing.

Thermal cameras can pinpoint the cold spots if you want to nail them down, and some have them on their phones, which saves looking for the damp spot, by eye.

I would never want to go fully off grid because i wouldnt be able to live comfortably without modern conveniences like they said:laundry machine etc,a modern toilet etc

I'm very fortunate to know them both, and the video doesn't do their house justice. I've watched as their space has evolved over the years and it is most definitely a work of love and hard work. beautiful people. I don't think they mentioned it in this but they often trade with the local Mennonites who in the earlier days used to come over to see these crazy city people, and now are just a part of the community

Lady, I mean this in the kindest way from a former home schooled child, please send your kids to school. I cannot overstate the importance and being around other people your own age and experiencing society.
Being homeschooled was probably one of the greatest injustices ever done to me, and my mother is a kind and loving person who really thought she was doing good.
hopefully they have a way to allow their children to socialize. Honestly the most important part of school isnt the subjects but the environment, cus they need to learn how to make friends and stuff

@@weimermh1 What studies? I'd like to read about that since I had the opposite impression.
@@Rall707 there's TONS and tons of legitimate studies if you just search. Most children are much better benefited having more time with their parents rather being separated & being able to build classes more suitable to their needs especially kids with intellectual challenges. It also helps with social skills & less anxiety & they also tend to learn life skills that public school kids don't like taxes and such. 👌

I do know that many home schooled children like OP wish they'd been better socialized. Those I've spoken to tend to feel unequipped for "regular" things like university or non-alternative work.
I think we should listen to them and try not to repeat the mistakes their parents made.
Awesome alternatives exist that allow kids to experience the outside world without being exposed to the negatives of the school system. Montessori, Waldorf, and even some faith-based schools are lovely.
Still, no judge to parents who home school with an awareness of the possible pitfalls. I'm not sure the people in this video offer their children the best - they say they almost never leave the property, which makes me wonder if they socialise at all...

"Basically, anything we need can be brought to us"- I think this is a key component that is often not spoken about, and I am glad they mention it. It is much easier to live off grid and create this situation if you can get deliveries from the city, plugging into the system as you need it. This is not to criticise, but to point out I am glad for the honesty.
2 Horses means transportation and haul and plow, some heavy loads.
I find it funny because it sounds like much of what they buy (groceries) are not produced in a city. Cities are great for distribution but not great at production
What bothers me is the fact that they’re using city services but don’t pay taxes, kind of defeats the purpose of doing what’s best for society imo

@@CROSSxNOVA I'm almost sure they still have to pay for property taxes and land taxes. Also they worked and paid into taxes before this.
I wish I knew and understood this kind of living when I was younger so that I could have planned my goals accordingly. Being bound to city life is really indeed a prison like life.

Cob houses and off grid living are our way of life here in Africa (I'm from Swaziland). It's great seeing other continents trying them out. Personally, I wish I'd live off grid again but technology has made life a lot easier for us. Beautiful home you guys 💕💕
easier isn't always better, that is the trap the west fell into, now see where we are ;-) less free, and those wanting to be free are shamed and criminalized

If everyone lived like this using wood to cook, we wouldn't have any trees left. The problem of food shortages in many African countries is that they cut down all the trees and now the soil can't hold water.

50 years ago. I am 74 and a Sagittarius wish l had moved to Canada instead of staying in the states. I live in East TN near the Smoky Mountains. I was 11 before we had a bathroom in the house, running water, or an electric cook stove. We had a Warm Morning Stove that was used to heat our Shotgun House. It replaced our wood and coal fireplaces that was in each room. You have brought back living the way Appalachian. Mountain people lived in the 40's. Would love to meet and visit you and visit Canada. Why don't you have a seminar and charge for all your knowledge, you are imparting. I am too old and ill to live your way now, but I have a son 53, a retired U.S. Marine that needs this way of life. a new thing I've seen recently are farm 'subdivisions' sold in 5-10 acre plots. the hoa everyone has to sign basically states they can have a single family home and barn, and either leave the land as is or work the land as a homestead. kinda cool. it's nice to see an agreement to keep things natural vs strict and fake.

@@krappykro I really would love to have 100+ acres and only work a small portion of it leave the rest of the land as is. Maybe have an earthship home. I've seen too many rural owners have like 5-20 acres for decades only to have cookie cutter communities spring up all the way around and completely ruin the view and tranquility in their retirement years.

It’s crazy because back in my home country in Guatemala there are literally villages full of these homes where people live in, made entirely of mud clay with hay. Only thing is they don’t have any type of electric sources.

Can I just say how gorgeous the mosiac tree wall and all the little beautiful details that has gone into the house! The windows, stained glass, the doors, the fence.... Honestly I prefer all the whimsical details of this house than any other cookie cutter house...thats just my opinion tho.

The people in these homesteading videos are almost universally lucid and thoughtful. I wonder how much of that is gleaned from the lifestyle and how much of that is a trait that drew them in. Probably a bit of both, as time spent developing a genuine self is going to improve anybody.

I cannot help but think of the children and what great things they will be able to teach others as they grow up. I think they are lucky. Some day they may not think that but when they are older, I’m certain they will appreciate all that you have done for them. I have three kids and they have no idea on how to survive off the land.
Yeah just hope the kids want to do what their parents want, don't have independent thought and want to become anything else like a doctor. Because their time and effort will be on living there, not education and working.
More likely that they’ll have more to learn from others since they’ll be extremely educationally stunted

Besides the amazing things they learn - or don't - I mostly wonder about their social skills and their possibility to connect with kids of their own age. Humans are social animals. Having the possibility to connect with others is very much part of 'real life' in my opinion.

We live off grid in Tennessee, my husband cashed out his 401k and we bought 5 acres and two buildings. A cabin that is 12x24 and a barn. We planted fruit trees and we raise chickens and turkeys. My husband has a full time job and I stay home. We love it here and it is hard but we manage just fine.
How many hours a day you spend to work for your homestead?
And in the meantime here is me spending the whole day in front of a screen.

We all work to survive. Weather if we go to a job each day for pay to buy the things we need. Or if we work each day producing the things we need ourselves. The beauty of the ladder is that you are much more self Sufficient and less need full of the production of others for your survival. There’s a lot of satisfaction and self security in that. Ontario winters are are cold and long. Much of the labor must be in preparing for that. Great video. Look forward to seeing others.

I've never been more pleased with anyone's living style or natural taste. HUGE KUDOS with not a small amount of envy! My goal is to move towards a sustainable lifestyle through permaculture within the next 10 years. It is hard but worth it to escape the modern "normal". Everyone must find their own balance but heck if I'm not taken with theirs.

I remember driving down our road some 40 years ago, searching away.... when suddenly I yelled "STOP the car!". Seriously...it was right out of "Miracle on 34th St." LOL. I jumped out of the car and just started running around in this woodland. I just KNEW I was where I was meant to be.
Not that there were not some challenges.. but in time each barrier fell away. Many times what SEEMED like a 'problem' ended up being a gift in disguise. This Universe has a GREAT sense of humor. 😏🙄
What I realize NOW is that our lives are perfectly designed to give us what we NEED to grow... there are no 'coincidences'.

Family "We built a safe eco friendly house for free!" Government "You are not allowed to build a house for free."
Government is conflicted because families like these don’t contribute to society since they’re self sufficient and therefore don’t have to work as much as others - yet they still have access to government funded infrastructure, welfare checks, etc.
Government can’t sustain itself if too many people decide to live off the grid - they need people to work as much as possible and pay as much tax as possible, because otherwise government can’t afford prestige projects and have to file for bankruptcy.
@@Thomas-lk5cu government is a leech, it takes from all, and only provides enough for those who need it to buy their votes, and gives the rest to their friends.
@@Thomas-lk5cu You're correct, but it's important that we still try and push back. The Canadian government is terrible when it comes to closing tax loopholes and going after the super rich. People could be allowed to live like this, but it won't happen without a fight. As more and more people push back against the astronomically high cost of housing across Canada, the more the government feels the need to crush people who could be seen as setting an example.

That's not it, Misty had it right, we need to change the codes to not apply to homes not intended for resale. The codes have a good intention, to not allow cheap bastards to build cruddy houses and sell them to unsuspecting people, particularly houses that are bloody dangerous and risk collapsing. So fix that problem, come up with a methodology that allows you to build your house where you are guaranteed to be the only risk taker and if you ever do sell it you retroactively have to take on all the code responsibility.
Bryce and Misty's house is perfectly safe because they did their research and intend it for themselves and their children so we just need a system that takes that into account. In short, stop designing regulations targeted at the lowest common denominator.

My friend lives off grid and MADE one that operated with a foot pedal.
@Mel Hawk as far as I know she had 2 buckets 1 smaller than the other, and a small pump rotor she built to work with a foot pedal. So basically a bucket in a bucket with a separate gooseneck drain she can attach rubber tubing to for a drain.
Maybe use a lawn mower motor push mower of course no gas ?

I’m 16, I’m really happy that I’ve found my passion this early on. I don’t really know where I want to buy property but I’ve got a few general ideas. I’m really exited since I’ll be graduating early next year, and will get to really and I mean REALLY start my dream by the time I turn 18.

After an initial seeding of Oakleaf and Bibb lettuce myself last spring, ending up with a small and ill-timed harvest, I let these 'mother' plants themselves seed the next generation, and the results were spectacular this spring...not only were the the heads gargantuan, they came up where they wanted to, and I've been harvesting lettuce for months...and just now is the second generation starting to go to seed. Amazing, natural, cyclical life..
