Actually in the movie he doesn't win if you've never seen it. True story of the Worlds Fastest Indian Motorcycle! Still in the record books from Australia all the way to Bonneville Salt Flats ...and the story of what he endured to get there is fantastic.
Interesting fact, the guy with the white flag - at the start line - was (at the time of filming) the actual mayor of Invercargill, Tim Shadbolt. Burt Munro was from Invercargill.
So context: This man modifies and races his own Indian motorcycle in Australia. This race is a qualifying race to see who gets a paid trip to go to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. His indian is a bit rickety and needed a push start, everyone doubts this man, but his is in-fact the the fastest bike out there because he’s willing to sacrifice almost all comfort for top speed. He loses this qualifier because they structured it to have a turn around point which isn’t even realistic to how the actual races in Utah go, because his bike is so FAST but has VERY limited maneuverability he fails to make the turn and loses the race.
